Adamu Garba Absent In Court During Case Against Twitter CEO

Garba had dragged Dorsey to court for endorsing and supporting the recent #EndSARS protest in Nigeria.

Former presidential aspirant, Adamu Garba, has absented himself from court in a suit against Twitter Chief Executive Officer, Jack Dorsey.

Garba had dragged Dorsey to court for endorsing and supporting the recent #EndSARS protest in Nigeria.

Tope Akinyode, a lawyer, who joined the suit to defend Twitter, revealed that both Garba and his lawyer were not in court, forcing the judge to adjourn the case.

Announcing his joining of the suit against Twitter and its CEO, Akinyode said,
I've filed court processes to challenge @adamugarba's lawsuit against @jack and @Twitter. Jack's support for Nigeria's cause is commendable. We'll protect our freedom of expression and resist the move to ban Twitter in Nigeria.

In the notice of joinder filed in the case, Adamu Garba v. The President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and nine others, Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/1391/2020 and sighted by SaharaReporters, Akinyode said he was an avid user of the online microblogging platform, Twitter, adding that it had been a significant avenue for him and other Nigerians to air their opinions and exercise their freedom of expression.

The lawyer said his tweets and that of many other Nigerians have formed a bedrock of public discourses, which have shaped and are still shaping government decisions.

Garba had instituted a $1bn lawsuit against Twitter and its founder, Dorsey, at the Federal High Court Abuja, over his role in the #EndSARS protests, which had led to violence across the country, resulting in the destruction of properties and loss of lives.

Jack was accused of actively supporting the funding of the #EndSARS protests across the nation as disclosed by Adamu Garba through a series of tweet posted on his official Twitter handle on Tuesday, October 20, 2020.

The motion on notice was brought pursuant to order II Rules 1, 2, 3 of the Fundamental Rights (Enforcement Procedure) Rules, 2009 and Sections 34(1), 35(1) and 41(1), and 43 of the 1999 constitution.

Sports / Breaking: Football Legend Diego Maradona Dead At 60 by Smoke2015: 6:17pm On Nov 25, 2020
Argentine football legend Diego Armando Maradona has died after suffering a cardiac arrest, reports coming in from local media in Argentina has revealed.

He was 60 years old.

The sad news was confirmed by his lawyer Matias Morlahas, as tributes poured in from all over the world of football.

Maradona left hospital on November 11 just eight days after being admitted for emergency brain surgery. He had a heart attack at his home just two weeks after leaving hospital where he underwent surgery on a blot clot in his brain.

Born on the 30 October 1960, Diego is widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, and many others argue that he is the greatest.  He helped Argentina win the World Cup in 1986, at the pinnacle of an illustrious career. He was one of the two joint winners of the FIFA Player of the 20th Century award.

Maradona's vision, passing, ball control and dribbling skills combined with his small stature (1.65 m or 5 ft 5 in) gave him a low center of gravity allowing him to manoeuvre better than most football players. He would often dribble past multiple opposing players on a run. His presence and leadership on the field had a great effect on his team's general performance, while he would often be singled out by the opposition.

In addition to his creative abilities, he also possessed an eye for goal and was known to be a free kick specialist. A precocious talent, Maradona was given the nickname "El Pibe de Oro" ("The Golden Boy"wink, a name that stuck with him throughout his career.

Maradona was the first player in football history to set the world record transfer fee twice, first when he transferred to Barcelona for a then world record £5 million, and second, when he transferred to Napoli for another record fee £6.9 million. He played club football for Boca Juniors, Napoli and Barcelona among others and was adored by millions for his brilliant skills.

Prior to his death, Maradona had been admitted to hospital on several occasions since his retirement. He almost died of cocaine-induced heart failure in 2000 and underwent years of rehabilitation.

Up until the heart attack, he was the coach of Gimnasia y Esgrima in his home country.

Crime / 22 Year Nigerian Stabbed 16 Times To Death In The UK, Gets Justice by Smoke2015: 6:04pm On Jan 06, 2020
Kevin Lusala, 23, who murdered Ayodeji Azeez, 22, a Briton of Nigerian descent, from Dagenham, in November 2018 has been jailed for life, it has emerged.

Lusala is  said to have used a 17-year-old girl to lure him into a ‘honeytrap’, where he made a teenage girl, who was spared jail, arrange to meet the victim in Anerley, south London, through multimedia messaging app Snapchat.

The murderer, also known as Krimbo, was jailed for a minimum of 30 years after killing Azeez. He made a teenage girl arrange to meet the victim in Anerley, south London. When they met she gave him a hug before directing him towards a car park, where Lusala and another robber were lying in wait to ambush him.

She has told jurors:

‘I got into the car and hugged him. I knew he was about to be robbed. ‘I felt sorry for him but I had no feelings for him. I just did not want to be there when it was happening.’

When Mr Azeez tried to resist the robbery, Lusala stabbed him viscously 16 times with a large knife. Mr Azeez stumbled into the road and was pronounced dead, despite efforts of paramedics to save him. Chaise Gray, 24, then stole Mr Azeez’s car but abandoned it a few streets away, jurors heard.

At his trial, Lusala aka  Krimbo and Krimz on social media, claimed a mystery man called ‘Drago’, who had gold teeth and tattoos, was responsible for the killing. An Old Bailey jury rejected his explanation and found Lusala guilty of murder and conspiracy to rob. The girl had admitted being part of the robbery plot and Gray was found guilty of the same charge. Father-of one Lusala was joined by his co-defendants, all from south-east London, at the Old Bailey to be sentenced by Judge Mark Dennis QC.

The court heard Lusala had a string of convictions dating back to when he was 14, including for robbery and possessing a 10cm long knife. The judge handed Lusala a life sentence with a minimum term of 30 years in jail for murder and 12 years for the plot to rob Mr Azeez, to run concurrently. Gray swore and muttered angrily as he was jailed for 10 years. The 17-year-old girl was handed a three-year youth rehabilitation order.

Religion / Ruga: Eedris Abdulkareem Protests At RCCG Camp, Insists Adeboye Must Take Stand by Smoke2015: 3:14pm On Jul 08, 2019
RUGA: Charly Boy, Eedris Abdulkareem, Baba Fryo, Others Storm RCCG Camp, Insist Adeboye Must Take A Stand

Charly boy, Baba Fryo, Eedris Abdulkareem, and some Nigerian students on Monday  stormed the Redemption Camp, to demand that the General Overseer of the Redeem Christian Church of God -RCCG Pastor Adeboye give his stance on RUGA and Leah Sharibu's abduction.

The protesters said that they regarded Adeboye as 'their father' and since he gave his stance on the COZA saga, he ought to do same on RUGA, and Leah Sharibu's abduction too.

Unfortunately, the protesters met Pastor Adeboye's absence. They were however addressed by the National general overseer of the RCCG Pastor Joseph Obayemi.

Because of Adeboye's absence, the protesters led by Charly Boy said they would give him one month to react. They added that if he failed to address the issues,  they will conclude that 'he is a party to the atrocities Osinbajo is committing (sic)'.

"Daddy spoke about COZA, he must also speak about RUGA. We give him one month, he must speak," the protesters insisted.

Nairaland / General / Refuse To Sacrifice Greatness On The Altar Of Good by Smoke2015: 4:33pm On Jun 26, 2019
I was somewhere were two ladies were having a conversation.
One was complaining to the other bitterly about her boyfriend who wasn’t into her, but because she was afraid of loneliness, decided to still stay with him.

“Why not end it?”
The other Lady who listened quietly all the while finally said, looking sympathetically at her friend.
“I ordinarily wouldn’t have said this, but I just know you deserve better. You can get better. Being alone while waiting for that to happen might be hard, but the end is always worth it babe.” she added.

I stood just behind them thinking about the advice the Lady just gave her friend, then looked towards the other Lady who was complaining about her boyfriend. First thing I noticed was how beautiful she was, but her beauty didn’t mask the fear and uncertainty in her eyes. She seemed lost, like she wanted more but somehow could’t bring herself to try to reach for it.

“I’d try dear, its not easy, but I’d try…” she muttered to her friend’s advice, but deep down I didn’t think she was ready. Her friend just nodded with understanding even as she hugged her. And just like me, she seemed to know that her friend wasn’t ready to make that big decision yet.

Many people are like Lady A, who know what exactly they need to do but just can’t sum up the courage to make the move. We find ourselves in situations that make us feel stuck, but in reality uncertainty and fear of the unknown keeps us rooted to one spot, too afraid to make a move. But the truth is in life, nothing good comes easy. And if you want better, or great, you must be ready to take risks, walk alone, be uncomfortable and conquer fear of the unknown.

Because of this fear, many people have sacrificed greatness on the altar of good or even mediocrity. Consoled sometimes by immediate gratification, they prefer to remain in situations that is no where close to where or what they deserve or can be. And this doesn’t just apply to relationships, it could relate to getting a new job, starting a new business, acquiring a skill or just doing something you’re passionate about that you’re afraid to attempt. It takes guts, grit to face the unknown and toughen it out. No one ever said anything great would be easy, we just know it is usually worth it.

So if you’re feeling stuck at your current job, and want something else, take the bold step. Before you do however, ensure that you’ve saved up, done a bit of research at least on what you want to do or what you’re passionate about. If you’re in a bad relationship, where your partner disrespects you, doesn’t give you what you need or bring anything meaningful to that relationship, please let him or her go. Being single and discovering yourself while the right person comes along isn’t a bad thing.

Often times you know it in your heart when you need to let something go in your life to give room for better or great. Don’t be afraid to give it a chance, strengthen your resolve, and just do it. Because in the end, you’d be glad you tried at least, without regrets. But most importantly, daring to pursue better often leads to self discovery and greatness, the type that never comes from been comfortable with good or OK. So give it a shot. Dare to move ahead, dare to pursue better, aspire to greatness! You Can.

Nairaland / General / Security Alert: LASG Warns Public Of Impersonators Posing As Govt Officials by Smoke2015: 7:06pm On Jun 24, 2019
Lagos Governor’s office has alerted members of the public to be weary of some people who may fraudulently use the office to commit criminal act.

This security alert came to the fore, over the weekend after a middle-aged woman was arrested following an intelligence on the usage of the Governor’s office to seek visas for some members of the public.

The suspect (name withheld), via an e-mail sent to the Embassy of Italy in Lagos allegedly posed as an official of Lagos State government and sought the country’s visas for some unsuspecting Nigerians.

The embassy however wrote to the Governor’s office to authenticate the claims, which were later found to be false.

The letter from the Italian embassy led to further investigation and her subsequent arrest and interrogation. Although she denied the allegation claiming that her email was hacked, the Lagos State Governor’s office has sent the matter to the appropriate security agencies for appropriate action.

In the meantime, the office has warned members of the public not to deal with any persons who parade themselves as government representatives in consular matters.

Nairaland / General / 7 Cool Things That Will Make You A Better Person by Smoke2015: 12:58pm On Jun 20, 2019
One of the most important things about life is growth, and consistent effort to be better than the person we were yesterday. Here for 7 cool things that make you better.

1) Writing thank you notes: This will always leave a good impression in the mind of the receiver. It shows that you are thoughtful and pay attention to detail. It also makes the receiver feel that you're grateful for whatever it is they did for you.

2)Learning and remembering people's names: It makes people feel special and that you pay attention. If you do a job that requires you meeting a lot of people, make conscious effort to remember names and make small talk when you meet those people again. People usually expect you to forget. Surprise them pleasantly by doing the opposite.

3) Showing up on time: I'm constantly working on being better at this because I know just how important it is. In fact knowing the importance of time is the reason why I'm making conscious effort to do so regardless of whether or not an event will start in time. Aside being seen as responsible, people notice when you keep you time and this could open doors when you least expect it.

4) Being a good listener: In a vain world where most people want to talk about themselves, being a good listener is a gift. This quality deserves a whole article on its own to emphasise it's importance. When you listen and listen well, people find you amiable, and equable. It also helps you become better at conflict resolution because most people listen to respond and not to understand. Learn to listen more and you'd be surprised the things you will learn, especially about people.

4) Admitting you're wrong: This takes more strength than actually been blindly stubborn. It takes a person who has won the battle against their ego to apologise and admit a wrong. Many people don't do this, rather they will try to do things to pacify the aggrieved person without actually talking about it, apologising or admitting the wrong. This is one of the things that break friendships and even relationships up when not quickly nipped in the bud. Tame your ego, learn to apologise and admit it when you are wrong. And even sometimes when you're not, learn to apologise for the sake of peace if you value that relationship and respect the other person.

4) Random Acts of Kindness: This is so gratifying, at least for me. Once in a while, try to do something nice for someone you know can never pay you back. The smile on the face of the recipient could brighten up your whole day>

5) Learning a new skill: I recently read the book Digital Minimalism by Carl Newport and it gave me a different view of learning new skills and the importance of high quality leisure. If you commit to learning new skill you enjoy, especially one that requires your attention, creativity and brain power, the results are very rewarding. Aside the fact that it can help you break the circle of social media addiction, you may discover a that your new found hobby could be something that would take you on a career path you never thought you needed and make you more money than you ever dreamt off. The year is just half way. There's still more than enough time for you to commit to learning a new skill and putting your heart into it.

Nairaland / General / On Learning Through Pain... by Smoke2015: 5:11pm On May 14, 2019
“You can’t control pain from what life throws at you, but you can decide whether it’s going to make you bitter or better. Choose the latter and ask God what he wants you to learn from the situation. Do this and you will emerge stronger, just like diamonds after going through fire.”

I wrote that on Twitter this morning, and was inspired to expatiate more on what I meant . I mean, there's so much a person can say with just 280 characters!

What I tried to concisely express is that the obstacle is always the way; <em>A way to strength and development</em>. If we look deeply at our issues, and cultivate the habit of detachment from emotions and analysing situations objectively, we will be able grasp a clearer picture from a somewhat arial view.

What this helps us do is see things clearly. It helps us to understand that there is a lesson (or more) to learn in every situation, one that if are too carried away by our emotions, we are likely to miss.

It's not easy, I know. Because most times when life challenges us we are so shaken that we completely forget to look at the alternate perspective. Alternate perspective being the good side of the situation i.e what we could learn from the experience.

Contrary to what our mind makes us think, <em>no situation, no matter how dire is bad altogether</em>. We just have to develop the mental strength to think and sieve through all the negative our mind tells us to focus on and look at things rationally through careful, constructive thinking.

"Sometimes, even scars are beautiful."

The ability to learn and know that every bad situation (even life threatening) could teach us something is one of the greatest coping mechanisms of champions. See the situation as one that won't take you down, but one you will get through and learn from. You might end up with scars, but sometimes even scars are beautiful. They are evidence of the champion that you are, and a reminder of how far you've come when you finally win.

So in every painful situation, always think about what lesson there is to learn. And when your pain beclouds your judgement, ask God what he wants you to learn from that trying situation.

Make this a habit and you will see negative patterns change in your life.

She said this while speaking to Elsie Godwin, on Plus TV Africa's interview show One on one.

About 12 minutes into the interview, the interviewer Elsie said to Tonto Dike, who corrected her at the beginning of the interview that she would rather be addressed as 'King Tonto' that in answering the previous question on 'fake love' in the industry, she seemed to have confirmed a controversial stance by Princess Shyngle that Nollywood actresses 'recycle men'. The actress brazenly answered:

"Of course that's what we do."
Elsie then asked "And there's proof to that?"
To which she retorted "do I have to prove anything? Can you prove anything that goes into someone's vagina?" She replied poker faced. "You can't proof that can you? " She said offhandedly.

Earlier in the interview, she said many interesting things, one of which is how she stumbled into acting despite reading petrol- chemical engineering, and how it changed her life.

"Being popular brings favours, doors fling open for me where doors are closing shut for people," she said.

About reality TV, and going into it for fame, the actress answered:

"Everyone going into the reality TV thing does it for the fame. Just chase the right clout, chase the right game, start focused . As long as you want to get popular, there's ways a price right? So just focus."

Responding to the backlash she got from people who said she should advice one of her besties Bobrisky, a renown crossdresser instead of advising Cossy Orjiakor and saying God could use her, she said:

"People are entitled to their opinion, my friendship with Bobrisky is fine, I don't bring personal relationships on online."

The interview then gets even more interesting. Elsie asks about her relationship with God and typing in tongues to which she, responded:

"I always type in tongues, it's not a new thing anymore."
"I understand speaking in tongues but typing in tongues?"- Elsie said to which Tonto butted in:
"Yes you can type in tongues. People rap in... worldly people rap in funny sounds right?" She asks going ahead to show how people rap in tongues.
"And it's spiritual to type in tongues?" Elsie asks.
"It's a personal decision, a personal race, when it's a personal race you can relate with your father the way you want, no body questions you about that so I really don't owe anyone any explanation whether I'm typing in tongues as long as your father understands it," she said.

When asked why she had been scarce in movies, and whether she was considering retirement, she answered:

"I never retire. But as it stands now I've played it all there isn't much challenge. There is no fierceness, no adrenaline rush. Different things come into play on why I'm not in screen today. I don't think I've found any new script I want to act in."

On producing her own movies she said stated that she would love to tow Genevieve Nnaji's steps on how she sold her new movie 'LionHeart' to Netflix. She said:

"Even tho production isn't for everyone, Genevieve has made me understand I can do it from time to time. She opened a portal that made me believe that I can do a great movie that will get me where I want to be. She paved a way, she has inspired me a lot."

When asked about privacy, the 33-year-old mother of one said that Nollywood movie makers were sometimes the ones who pirated their movies.
"We are the ones killing ourselves. If we can stop the corruption inside, then we can stop that outside. The ones doing it inside to themselves have to stop," she said.

Elsie then asked her about 'Fake love' in the Nigerian movie industry and her stance on it to which she said:

"I don't care..."
"We don't have to friends. I just come to work greet everyone and leave. We don't have to have a relationship.
We are all here fighting for the same thing, it's a circle, we share- same men, same clothes same movies, same things, it's a cycle. So why would I want to be friends with someone who wants my life? Come to work do your work and go. I'm not saying be enemies with anybody, I really don't care about fake love, I just do my job."

On her music career, and if fans should expect something soon, she said:
"Well, if I have the opportunity to come back musically, definitely I will do one or two songs again. It's not something I'm itchy or eager to do however. I'm a woman now, I was a girl before, but now I have a child, I have businesses, I have over 30 staff, I have over 3700 children I pay school fees for. I need things, like the things I'm getting in Abuja, getting contracts, selling, building houses, not music. Music is good, I'm not saying it isn't. Just wasn't my strong point. But if I have free time, definitely!'

She also added that her break up from Dbanj's DB records was mutual and friendly, and they still remain great friends till date.

Talking about her foundation The Tonto Dike Foundation, she said it has been around for 12 years and started from Liberia after she was invited by the then President of the country.

"Before the foundation, I came from a church where giving us a lifestyle. I've always been a giver. Now it just happens to be that I have a platform, I have a voice and I have the opportunity to give back. The foundation is just to make it bigger.
I am very proud of the foundation, it makes me happy. Seeing people happy makes me happy. Infact that's one of the only things that make me happy. Being the reason why other people are happy, it's intriguing." She said.

The interviewer Elsie Godwin then asked her a question on her life so far, to which 'King Tonto' answered with reference to her marriage, a very touchy topic for the actress who has been embroiled in what seems like an unending rhubarb with her ex husband Olakunle Churchill. Elsie asked:

"Looking at your journey so far, what would you do differently?"

"The only thing I would have done differently was pick a better husband, pick a better father for my son, that's the only thing I regret in my life, the only thing I would go back to change," she answered in a somewhat solemn tone.

After this, she refused to answer anymore questions about him, stating that she refused to 'make him a constant presence in her life.'

On returning back to Nollywood, she answered:
"I'm still in Nollywood, I haven't gone anywhere. I just haven't found a challenging script yet."

When asked about her brand and how controversial she is, Tonto replied:

"I have done just one movie in the last 6 years, yet I'm still one of the most talked about, as a matter of fact I'm still one artist that generates money for any blogger, and TV station, any media house. The controversy kept me in that space where I make money for people. But your favorite artists, the people you love, they don't even get up to 500 likes when bloggers talk about them . So the controversy helps. Now it's negative, because we live in a society where we are all hypocrites, you see, they know you can take their brand to the next level, but the bigger brands refuse to affiliate. There, the negativity tells but still it puts you on the map, where you're almost like the biggest celebrity."

Still on controversy, she was asked if she created controversies of they just happen to which she replied:

"They just happen! I'm very different from what you see in TV.
I can t be in this room and not speak to you. It's not because I don't care about you-definitely I don't, but it's not because I don't care. It's just because that's who I am. I don't have people skills. I don't have friends I mingle with, I don't club, I don't do events, even weddings, I don't go, so I'm a very reserved person. But I have a temper. I have an ability to go from 0-100 on you in a split second because I'm so much into myself. I don't look for trouble so when you come at me especially in a negative way... it's..." she paused, then continued "sometimes its just very frustrating then I give an outburst. Then people now say oh she talks too much. Sometimes its not even personal for me, it's just play, but it happens to be that I'm controversy and I own it!" She said.

In conclusion she admitted that being controversial has it downsides as it has made her lose big deals in the past but has since grown from those ordeals. The interview then ended with words for her fans which was:

" I love you, love you, love you, God bless you."

Food / The Greedy Neighbour: What Would Your Reaction Be If This Happened To You? by Smoke2015: 2:01pm On Apr 19, 2019
A family friend who is still a student came around last week, for my birthday. She wanted to come on the 7th but couldn't make it.

So when she was leaving I packed some birthday goodies for her: A huge chunk of cake I put in the biggest size of that common transparent take away pack, three cans of malt and soft drinks, 6 wraps of moimoi, Ofada sauce and rice.

Knowing she didn't have a fridge at the place she rented close to her school, I asked her how she would preserve the food, she said:

"My neighbour and I are very cool, she once said I could put anything in her freezer if I ever needed to."

I wasn't too sure about the arrangement, but considering she was a student and the food would go a long way, I packed it all for her. Before going back to school, she also went home, and her Mum packed a big bowl of Peppersoup for her.

On getting back to school, she said she took a drink, ate some of the rice and Ofada sauce and cake. She then cut a decent chunk of the cake, divided the pepper soup into two portions, added moimoi and gave to her neighbour. She also gave her two cans of malt too.My family friend afterwards asked if she could put what was left of the food in her freezer and she readily agreed. She also thanked her for the food.

Because of her really busy week at school, she decided she would settle down to enjoy the rest of the food over the weekend. So last Sunday she called her neighbour (she calls her Mummy Peju) because she is married with two kids).
The conversation went something like this:

"Mummy Peju, good afternoon. I knocked on your door just now but no was home. Please let me know when you get back".
"I'm still in Church, we just closed. This one that you called on the phone, I hope all is well?" Mummy Peju joked.
"All is well o, I just wanted to pick up the food I kept in your freezer", my family friend Bimbo replied laughing too.

Her response I need to type in Yoruba, for context. She said:

"Ha, Daddy wa ati awon omo ma ti je yi toku, aro pe eefe mo ni..."
Meaning 'Our Daddy' (her husband) and the kids ate the rest of it because we thought you no longer wanted it.

Plix dears, at what point did she hint that she didn't want the food again?

Bimbo still thought it was a joke.

"Ahn Ahn, Mummy Peju, e serious now, se n whyne mi ni?  (Meaning Mummy Peju, stop pulling my legs)She asked still laughing because she thought her neighbour was kidding.

But alas! Mummy Peju was serious, the food had really been eaten.
At that point Bimbo's laughter was replaced with shock, and she just managed to muster
"Oh Ok, kosi problem, Ese ma."
Meaning: 10q ma, no problem. She then ended the call.

As Bimbo narrated the story to me I laughed hysterical, while shaking my head vehemently at the same time. On a more serious note though, who does something like that? Remember, Bimbo had initially given her part of the food, before even putting it in her freezer. What level of greed will make you do such, to your neighbour whom you're just getting to know?

Anyway, Ofada and moimoi had finished, but I still had cake so I gave her some when she came around yesterday. However she was heartbroken, and the 'sefere shest pain' she experienced was evident even while she narrated the ordeal. 'Odun my gan Sister Moji!', She kept repeating at intervals while giving me the gist.

Nairaland / General / Lizzy: Parenting, Hope And Second Chances by Smoke2015: 5:52pm On Apr 17, 2019
My heart is broken.
Broken from the short 2 minute video on 26 year old Lizzy, found by Pastor Tony Rapu, of The House of Freedom Church and currently being rehabilitated.
I haven’t been able to get the video out of my head since I first saw it this morning. The question as to whether her parents did enough in preventing the last 7 years which she said she has spent on the street as an addict keeps replaying in my mind.

I was having a conversation with my Mum recently.
It was one of those conversations, where something led to my Mum giving thanks for how well I turned out. She spoke about how her monitoring me especially in my secondary school days helped me to turn out well.
“I never missed your visiting day once while you were in FGGC Sagamu because I never wanted you to feel neglected. I also didn’t want you to derail,” she said.

I looked at her face and I saw it break into a smile of pride. I smiled back, wryly.

“Mum you did your best, and I will forever be thankful to you. However, It’s not just because you were a great Mum that I’ve turned out OK, so many external factors come into play ,” I said as I thought even more deeply about my response to her.

My Mum agreed, and started to talk about the role of God, the God factor in raising a child. And as I think back to that conversation with my Mum, I’m reminded of all the external factors that come into play in the formation years of a child. The external factors that no matter how remarkable a person can be in parenting they have no control over. Factors like the relationships a child gets into,  e.g the boyfriend  whom Lizzy said introduced her drugs.

One of such examples was back in my Unilag days, when as a young adult I met a guy at a hostel mate's birthday party I attended. At first he appeared responsible, intelligent, so it was easy to get along with him. He wasn't suspiciously flashy or extravagant either, except for his exotic cars. When I asked what he did for a living, he told me he sold cars and as a result travelled a lot. His explanation seemed plausible enough for the flashy cars, and I believed. Until one day when he called and asked if he could come visit me in school to discuss a business deal with me. He said that the deal was easy and would change my life for good. Long story short, the business deal turned out to be cocaine pushing. I ran for my dear life, and after severally trying to reach me, he moved on, possibly to his next 'ambitious', victim.

Lizzy's case makes me look back in retrospect, to how things could have played out if I had agreed to give it a try. I never would have completed my law degree. I could be dead, in jail, amongst many other outcomes that could have resulted from that singular decision, had I made that mistake. My Mum as protective as she was could never have protected me from meeting that drug pusher. All she could have done was ensure she was a good parent who taught me the difference between good and bad, and that she did.

So after I first saw the video, I remembered my experience above, and thought about parenting as a whole. It led me to all sorts of questions about Lizzy's parents. Parents who clearly were comfortable enough to send her to two of the best private schools- Caleb Nursery and Primary , Vivian Fowler Memorial Secondary - Lagos state can boast of. Parents who clearly understood the importance of good education in the foundational years of a child, reflecting in how well spoken and fluent she sounded in the video when she spoke English.

Where are they? Are they alive? Why did they give up on her at just 19? Did they do the best they could for her as their child? Did they have a role to play in her ending up on the streets? Where they attentive enough? Could they have done better? While I don’t have answers to these questions, what I’ve come to realise, in no attempt to make a case for them is that good parenting is no guarantee for how a child turns out. A child is exposed to all sorts of associations( like my example above), is ultimately their own person and will choose their own paths regardless of who their parents are. This is the sad reality of life: That parents really cannot protect their kids all the way. This is where the God factor comes in. It is that God factor, I surmise, that really ensures that after parents do their best, their kids turn out OK.

“Emi Omo nile, omo olona;
Mo di eni to n toro gbana
Mo deni to n se se
Mo de ni ti on toro kiri…”

“Me, A child from a privileged background
I’ve become an addict who begs begs for heroin/Coke
I’ve become one who sustains injuries
I’ve become one who begs for arms to survive.’

The above soliloquy brought tears to my eyes, as I watched and wondered about the life she must have lived for the past 7 years, exposed to all sorts of dangers, as she battled her biggest demon: addiction.

“Pastor Tony, this is the way I suffer everyday, ” she said with a very clear accent reflecting her privileged upbringing as she is shown in traffic soliciting for arms .

“After I finish begging in the morning, I will still prostitute at night.” She continued. “Please I really really need your help…please, Im tired, I’ve seen it all. It’s only you that can come to my rescue”, she pleaded in an emotional laden voice even as tears flowed freely from her pain filled eyes.

The video ended.

Lizzy’s story is one of many other out there, filled with many lessons we can all learn from.
I’m glad God gave her a second chance, through Pastor Tony Rapu who revealed she is currently in rehab, undergoing detoxification.
Here’s sending her light and love, hoping that kicks off her life in full gear and charts a new course to a better future.

Rooting for you Lizzy.

Nairaland / General / My Biggest Lessons Of 2019 So Far... by Smoke2015: 1:57pm On Apr 16, 2019
In the first quarter of 2019, I learnt and unlearnt, and relearnt to re-understand.
Ok, that might be a little confusing.
What I simply mean is I've learnt afresh life lessons I knew before, through  a fresher outlook and/or application. In this post, I'm going to share some of these lessons with you . I hope that it helps you too from a fresh perspective as you continue the 2nd quarter of the year.

People Are Usually Not What They Seem:

This is clearly something most of us know.
At least I knew before now.
However over time, I've come to rely on my intuition greatly in judging character and in the past I've been more right than wrong. However this year, I have met and encountered persons who epitomise this saying and it has made me question if intuition can truly be relied upon in judging character. I met a couple of people whom at first seemed like amazing people on the surface but soon found out I had judged wrongly. This made me mindful of the need to be more indifferent when I meet people in future and rather than figure out who I think they are, I let them show me over time. I suggest you do same too in new relationships. Mindfully try not to get too attached to anyone regardless of how impressive they seem at first, until over time they show you who they are as you get to know them better. If you stay aloof internally and not get too attached to anyone new, they will not be able to shock or surprise you, even if they act disappointingly.

Waking Up Early Really Does Help Get A Lot Done:

Typically, I am not a morning person. Thankfully also, I work for my self and have help so prior to now waking up before 7 am wasn't my thing, at all; Except I have an appointment or a deadline to meet. However I stumbled on a thread earlier in the year and decided to challenge myself to wake up two hours earlier, and see then what happens. The result? More productivity and ability to squeeze in more time for things- like reading, reflection, praying, which I used to postpone till later in the day and often times end up not been able to do, or at least as much as I would because of tiredness from the day's activities. The overall impact of waking of early is really profound. The cumulative extra 2hrs, or 1:30 mins after a month, 6 months and even a year amounts to great progress. Truth is I still struggle and sometimes wake up 5:30, or minutes to 6am, but every day it gets easier, even as the consistency accumulates. I also try these days as much as possible to go to bed in good time. 6-7 hrs of sleep for me is key for optimum functionality.

Consistency Is One Of The Major Keys To Success:

I knew this already but underrated it in some ways. Many philosophers and successful people have been quoted to say consistency trumps talent. And a person who is consistent in any activity will over time do better than a person who is talented in same activity but does not work on their talent. In the last sub topic above, I talk about how the cumulative extra two hours of waking up early will amount to great time invested in something valuable like - reading, praying, critical thinking, planning and strategising, reflection, meditation etc, or a combination of activities. The only way the hours can cumulate is CONSISTENCY. Waking up early on somedays shouldn't be the norm, but making sure to do it everyday.

Agreed on some days your body or mood revolts, still show up, in this case wake up early anyway. Now you may not be able to commit two hours like you normally do, but on such days, even 30 minutes, or even 10 will do. The most important thing is showing up, and making effort even when you don't feel like it. In fact, the true test of being consistent is showing up, or engaging in an activity when you don't feel like it in the least. On such days, just making the effort counts. And before you know it, your little effort will start to grow again, and then reach your normal tempo or even exceed it. Using me as an example, I did not feel like writing today at all. But I've recently decided to challenge myself by trying to write for at least 10 minutes daily to flex and improve my writing muscles. What I've found, on days like today is that sometimes what is necessary is the effort. Once you start, you'll find your tempo.

Consistency Without Learning Could Result In Stagnancy:

Without learning, Consistency could breed stagnancy and mentally draining monotonous routines that could lead to diffidence. For consistency to really propel you to success, you must commit daily to ensuring that you are better than the person you were yesterday. Commit to learning, stay curious, ask questions, read books. As much as doing the same thing over and over can be great, without conscious effort at self development and growth, you can become stuck in a monotonous circuitry that can even overtime affect your mental health. So while making effort to be consistent and show up, make effort to to improve in all areas, and get better daily.

Time Really Is The Most Valuable Thing There Is:

If you value money, then you should value time more and spend it judiciously.
The last sentence above you just read, did it make sense to you?
Yes? Good.
Because the few seconds you spent reading it is gone forever and can never be recovered. So if you had spent those few seconds reading or doing something meaningless, that doesn't add value to you in anyway it's gone too.
The biggest problem many of us have is that we don't fully understand the value of time, and the fact that that it is worth way more than money. Everyday, minute spent draws us closer to our death date. And when we postpone things and procrastinate, we are pushing forward those things to a time when we could do other things. Of course this is not to undermine the role of God's timing in things or the fact that somethings are destined to be done at a latter date, the point is just to emphasise how important and valuable we should see time, and treat it as such. If you lose money in say a business deal for instance, you can make that money back, and even more. But if you waste or lose time in doing something meaningless, that time is gone forever and cannot be recovered.
No doubt we have all at one or the other lost valuable time on something, but going forward consider carefully and keenly what/what takes your time and if it adds any value to you. Remember also that you are not promised tomorrow so taking advantage of the time you have now is key to making the best of your time here, and making effort to leave your footprints in the sands of time.

These are so some of the key lessons I've relearnt and put into better perspective this year. I hope it helps you as it has me, and propels you to improve the quality of your life and do better.

Celebrities / Why Waje Shouldn't Give Up by Smoke2015: 6:48pm On Mar 25, 2019
"Is that Waje?"

I whispered into friend's ear as I looked towards the beautiful lady across the table. She was laughing and dancing heartily, stylishly dressed in a blazer and pants. It was actually her beautiful sequinned blazer and décolletage that caught my attention in the first place.

"Yeah she's the one," my friend confirmed.
"She bought most of the drinks on the table and invited us to join her. I can't even believe how friendly she is," my friend added.

While we danced, and partied that evening, from time to time I glanced at her, and how she mingled easily with everyone at the table. She even danced with my friends who she met for the first time that evening, and had no airs around her at all.

Prior to that night I had seen her on several occasions at events, but it wasn't until those few hours we spent at the same table that I was able to take in her personality, and form an opinion. We didn't chat or speak, but from observing her warmness towards complete strangers, I liked her attitude, and considered her a friend in my head since that day. There's also the part that people tell me we look alike. I still can't see the facial semblance, but perhaps in other areas. Lol.

So when I saw the video above of her expressing her frustrations this morning, talking about how she was considering quitting music, I felt her pain, deeply. Not just because I consider a friend in my head, but because I, like many others can relate to the frustration of putting in a lot of effort into something and not getting maximum results. It is painful as it can be depressing, to work hard for years and put you best foot forward yet struggle to live the life of your dreams.

“Maybe it's fair to give it a rest and try other things for now," Waje said in a contemplative tone in the  viral video above as she discussed with two other ladies about her music career.

"But I can’t have released an album after everybody has been shouting Waje your last album was many years ago please we need an album, all the people that were shouting, where are they?" She asked, her voice getting high pitched, laden with the burden of her frustrations.

One of other two ladies in an effort to dissuade her from giving up and encourage her simultaneously started to say "at the end of the day,  the fact that this person…"

Waje butted in impatiently,  saying  "that’s what Im saying I don't have the money... let me speak it in pidgin English I no get the money for publicity," She lamented.

She then continued explaining how many times, she had to put aside many of her needs, because music always takes the bulk of her income, yet the results of her sacrifice and investment hasn't paid off like she hoped, even after many years. "I'm not willing to put all that money in it any more," she concluded.

Waje’s frustrations is something many of us can relate to. Working hard, but not getting the results one desires, and hanging in there hoping it will pay off. After some time, one starts to consider throwing in the towel, because of how exhausting the weight of dashed hopes can be on one's mental health.

This is not about being broke. Waje is not broke. I mean she only just released a movie with singer Omawunmi- She Is The Movie, and probably has one or two things bringing her income aside music. But the bulk of her frustrations emanates from doing something she clearly has a passion for, and like many of us not getting to heights she envisioned after years of hard work. At this point, she is probably wondering, like many people caught in the same dilemma if she waisted her time from the get go and if it really is time to count her losses and move on.

When anyone gets to this point, it's hard for them to listen to positive advice, because their default mind set is that the person or people giving advice don't understand their pain. It's hard to remember how far they've come because they have aspirations they feel far from. I understand this because I have been there. But what I also understand is that while there is still room for plenty of growth, Waje isn't doing bad at all. In fact, she is one of the few female artists who have managed to stay afloat in the Nigerian pool of entertainment that seems to drown female artists from time to time, leaving the the ratio of female to male artists far from balanced. For this alone, I think she should be proud of herself.

Also the crossroads she is at the moment is what many successful people say makes all the difference: the ability to stick it out when the average person would throw in the towel. Easy it wont be, and in fact looking for more ways to supplement income to sustain her music dream may become imperative. However, if she can take stock, get help where necessary to analyse her music without sentiment, and try to make one or two changes, her career will take flight to the next level.

What if she has done this before? That's where perseverance and consistency comes in. It's not about how many times a person falls but how many times they get up. I think taking a break might help. Taking time off to let off steam, getting an arial view, trying to see the entire picture like an outsider, resetting to a state of tabula-rasa might just give fresh ideas that will take her career to the next level. With these things you just never know. What I know however, is that if she throws in the towel now, she will be forced to deal with wondering what could have been, if she stuck it out a little longer.

I understand Waje's frustrations, I really do. Also for some people, giving up might be the best option in their situation. However, I don't think Waje's is one of such. She's had a good stint musically and from this point, I think it can only get better.

Ultimately I hope she does what she thinks is best for her happiness, regardless of what that is. Wish her all the best.

TV/Movies / Turn Up Charlie Is A Must Watch For Nigerians Who Love TV Shows (review) by Smoke2015: 3:57pm On Mar 19, 2019
Saw a friend talk about Turn Up Charlie day before yesterday on social media and decided to give it a try, mainly because it was just 8 episodes of less than 30 minutes each, and of course it stars Idris Elba.

In the Netflix original, Elba (also one the show creators) plays Nigerian Charlie Ayo – a struggling DJ who is lives with his Nigerian Aunty in London. He reconnects with a childhood friend, a Hollywood Superstar married to a world famous DJ and the duo have an 11 year old problem-child daughter.

Things get interesting when Ayo by chance becomes the Manny to his friend’s precocious daughter, while also trying to resuscitate his career by working with his friend’s famous DJ wife and the show takes off from there.

When I remember Turn Up Charlie, two words come to mind, sweet and heart warming. It showed a Idris Elba’s paternal side, a glimpse of which we saw 12 years ago in Tyler Perry’s Daddy’s little girls. Since then, Elba has done more of action movies, so seeing him play and interpret remarkably this very relatable character was very refreshing to watch.

What makes it even more endearing is the fact that he plays a Nigerian. Also his over the top, hilarious  Aunt added to the mix and heightened the show’s comic value. My only problem was the ridiculous accent which they claimed to be Nigerian. However after a couple of episodes I got used to it and just went with flow.

Aside the comic side, I liked how show explored the themes of love and family over money, and hope in pursuing dreams. Elba who was a DJ and one hit wonder struggled with a making a come back in an era way ahead of his time, as well as confronting his demons majorly his ego. Also despite having no kids of his own, he had to cope with dealing with a precocious, entitled little girl who came from a life privilege in Hollywood. But did he succeed?

Religion / Nigeria Writer Narrates How Dead Friend She Prayed For Resurrected by Smoke2015: 3:31pm On Mar 19, 2019
A Christian Nigerian writer Eketi Edima Ette has narrated an astonishing story reminiscent of how Jesus raised the dead, as recorded in the Holy Bible.

In the incredibly astonishing tale, she reveals that her friend died around 8am on a Sunday, and while praying and asking God why he took her friend,  she heard a voice instructing her to pray and to command her friend to come back to life before she was taken to the morgue.

According to her, she doubted if the instruction was from God, but decided to do it any way, bearing in mind that she had nothing to lose.

But alas! Like the Lazarus of old, barely 30 seconds after praying over her dead friend the following day around 5pm (more than 24 hours after her friend was pronounced dead) she came back to life.

Amazing right? Read the full story below:

This is a snippet of a far bigger story. But I feel the need to share for two reasons: be very careful what you ask of the Lord. Trust him---if he says it, He'll do it. He always comes through.

Three weeks ago, I was a simple Christian girl, going about my business, loving the Lord. Then my friend became ill. I came here to ask you, mes amis, to pray for her. A couple or so days later, I returned to tell you she was dead.

What I didn't tell you is that later, as I was crying and wailing, I asked the Lord to bring her back to life. Well, I was just asking. But He answered.

He said, "Command in the name of Jesus, that life be restored to her before she's taken to the morgue."

I was like, "Erm....Bros...nah. It's not you that's speaking. Someone is playing a prank on me."

But then I thought to myself, well, there's nothing to lose. Laslas, if no be God talk am, nothing go happen.

She'd died at 8 a.m on a Sunday. At 5 p.m. on Monday, barely 30 seconds into speaking to her, my friend came back to life.

I had no idea that that was just the beginning.

It's been three weeks of a roller-coaster ride with the Lord. There are days when I wish I'd never specifically told him that I wanted to know the God I read of in the Bible. That God, is scary
That God is so astounding, so unbelievable, that sometimes it feels like my mind is melting.

But that God is exciting! And amazing. And awesome. I've run out of adjectives to qualify him. Sometimes, He will frustrate you....but His will must be done and it always ends in praise.

There's nothing like knowing God for yourself. Yahweh is real. He's tangible. Now I understand, vividly so, why the apostles and disciples of old were beaten, tortured, killed and yet, they wouldn't let go of Yahweh. You just can't let go after you've tasted him in this way.
He's...lit!

Anyway, that's part of my testimony. The rest, you will definitely get to hear someday. In the meantime, if you're not serious, avoid the following songs:

'Use Me Lord.'
'Here I Am, Send Me.'
'I Surrender All' (and I don't mean 'I Surrender to Your Ileke di').

P/S
People who don't have Jesus Christ in their lives....how are they doing it? Kai!

**This picture is me and God right now.
But, we good.

TV/Movies / Triple Frontier: Not Your Regular Star Studded Action Flick But It’s Brilliant! by Smoke2015: 4:53pm On Mar 15, 2019
This movie Triple Frontier is a must see and worth every minute of it’s 2hrs 5mins running time! I saw it yesterday after someone recommended it on Twitter, and my mind was blown. Here’s why.

As I’ve grown older, I’ve become very picky about the kind of movies I watch except they come highly recommended. These days I hardly watch horror movies or action, life is a battle already each daybiko…lol. So when I decide to see a movie or TV show I’d rather pick one in the romance or drama genre regardless of their cheesy, sometimes ridiculous storylines, lol. At least I know what to expect.

Bearing this in mind, you can imagine my skepticism when I decided to see Triple Frontier. I was literally rolling my eyes as it started especially after seeing the star studded cast. I thought to my self ‘it will be another cliche star studded action movie where the heros alway win…wan wan wan. ‘ Little did I know I was wrong.

Triple Frontier stars some of my favs Charlie Hunnam (King Aurthur), Oscar Isaac Hernadez Estrada (Apocalypse in X-Men Apocalypse and I love his full name ), Pedro Pascal( GOT, Narcos) as well as Ben Affleck and Garrett Hedlund.

These 5 stars who play former Special Forces operatives reunite to plan a heist and steal $75m from a drug Lord in South America as well as kill him. They undertake the dangerous mission for themselves instead of the country for the first time, and understandably so: life after the military was tough and they were were struggling to make ends meet. Unfortunately, things take an unexpected turn from their well mapped out plan and almost spirals out of control, resulting in an epic battle for survival.

From the synopsis you’d think you have an idea of what to expect right? Wrong. I pride myself self as being able to guess movies accurately often, but this was a remarkably good plot, nothing cliche. I was pretty surprised by how things played out in this movie.

Lagos Sun is very hot today and disturbing me at the moment because PHCN..SMH, so I’d just leave it here. If you haven’t seen it already, make it a date this weekend and let me know what you think. If you have, share your thoughts. For me, it was a fantastic movie.

Career / Feeling Jaded? Here's How To Make Lemonades Out Of Life's Lemons by Smoke2015: 3:09pm On Mar 14, 2019
I recently called a friend of mine to ask her how she was doing. When she picked up the phone, she didn’t sound like her bubbly self and even though she answered that she was doing OK, her answers were lack-lustre.

“Are you sure you’re good? you don’t sound like your usual self,” I commented, attempting to dig deeper, and hoping that she would open up on what was wrong.
“I’m just tired Moji, I’m so jaded with work. I feel unhappy and don’t know what to do.”
So that was it I thought, remembering that I had recently experience what she was feeling, empathising with her. I then went on to proffer some advise that worked for me when I found myself in the same funk.

Being jaded is something most people experience from time to time, and it usually comes hand in glove with dissatisfaction with one’s job or quality of life. It also comes as a result of diffidence, which can creep on a person unsuspectingly. I know this because I have been there not once or twice. But every time it happened, I was able to get through it. Here’s how:

Timing
When feeling unsatisfied with life, jaded or sad one of the things that helps is to remember that everyone has their own time. That you’re stuck with a job you can’t stand and wish you were doing something else doesn’t mean that times won’t change. Remember, even the Bible says that there’s time for everything under the sun. Just a year, even 6 months from now you could be somewhere completely different, doing something you never imagined, making a tons load of money. So borrow a leaf from the stoic’s believe that you are where you ought to be right now. So relive the moment, you will never get it back.

Being thankful
I hate to break this to you, but feeling jaded and dissatisfied with life is a subconscious emotion of ingratitude. I say subconscious because I’m aware that people who feel this way can’t help it most times. While it’s ok to be ambitious and want more from life, acknowledging that there are people (your age) who have way less and are praying for what you have, will make you (more) thankful. In World Poverty Clock report created by Vienna-based World Data Lab, 91.16 million –46.5 of Nigerians were reported to be living below a dollar a day as of February 13, 2019. Using the World Bank’s poverty line, if you live below $1.90 (N693.5) a day, you will be classified as living in extreme poverty. If you’re reading this, higher chances are that you are far from this poverty level. You’re not better than those who are, so you definitely ought to be thankful!

Also, the gift of life and good health is another reason to cultivate the attitude of gratitude. Someone told me this story while trying to encourage me to remain thankful always. He said he was tat he cemetery for a burial when something urged him to look down where he was standing. On looking down, he saw the tombstone of a man, born on the same day, same year as he was but who died a few years back. It brought tears to his eyes, because he realised in that very moment that life was a gift and privilege, one we often times take for granted.

So when next you’re feeling down, be thankful for life and what you have presently, knowing that things could be worse.

Unhealthy Comparison
Comparison is one of the biggest banes of human existence. It has robbed many of their peace, led many to depression, suicide and often results in gross discontentment and unhappiness. In today’s social media conscious world, unhealthy comparison is at its all time high. Many people are constantly unhappy because rather than being content with the present and dedicating more time to ensuring a better future, they spend valuable time stressing over other who show off what appears to be the live of their dreams on social media.

If you’re the person I described above, the time to take control of your life is NOW. Begin to make conscious effort to stay away from social media as much as possible or your mental health and happiness. The time wasted stalking others can also be channeled into more productivity e g reading good books and learning new skills. Also remind yourself of the concept of timing above when you see people who are your age group, or younger doing seemingly better than you. I say seemingly because more often than not things are usually not what they seem and people only show you what they want you to know, and believe. Perception is usually not reality.

So quit the unhealthy comparison game and focus on improving the quality of your life. Oh, and one last thing- unhealthy comparison can lead to envy and jealousy, and this is not a feeling any good person should have or harbour towards others. Being genuinely happy for the achievement of others is you emitting positive energy that will in turn attract good things to you. So be mindful of your feelings and fight off unhealthy comparison with all your will!

Reflect and remind myself of how far you’ve come
When a person is jaded, or unhappy with the quality of life, one of the reasons is because they dwell only on their present feelings, forgetting how far they’ve come. But in truth, we cannot really appreciate the present if we don’t reflect and take stock of how far we’ve come. Agreed, you may not be where you want to be yet, and you aspirations may still seem far off, but you are definitely where you used to be. Reflecting on progress you have made no matter how little can give tremendous hope and remind you to be thankful. Also, the present situation you’re dissatisfied might be a set up for the next big thing; however reflection and constructive thinking is what can help with this realisation. Therefore it is very imperative that one makes conscious effort to analyse and reflect on situations when jaded or feeling hopeless.

Stay Positive

This is perhaps the hardest thing to do when you find your self feeling down. But this is where mindfulness comes in. If you’re feeling unsatisfied with your life, you have to consciously make effort to tune your feelings back in line. The truth is you alone are responsible for your happiness, so filing his at the back of your mind is key. Friends may care, but they also have things they are dealing with, just like you. So how I do I fight off the feeling on my own, you may ask?

– First is to be careful what you consume. By consumption here, I mean what you feed your mind with. Stay away as much as possible from things and people that make you insecure, unhappy or unsatisfied with your life. Instead focus on doing better in all areas of your life, building your self esteem and finding your purpose.

– Reading life changing books, finding time to learn something, listening to mentors. Thanks to youtube almost everything can be learnt on the internet these days. So a way to get yourself out of a jaded funk is to try to learn something new you’ve always wanted to, that could become an extra source of income in the long run. Also watch and listen to people who have made it that reflect where you see yourself in future but didn’t have it easy at the beginning. When you do this, you will realise many people who have made it big faced similar, even tougher challenges than you, and this will help you feel better.

– Practise mindfulness. Be mindful of your thoughts, and try to understand why you feel how you feel by asking yourself deep, visceral questions that only you can answer. Realising the root cause or reason is the first step to overcoming that feeling. Interestingly many people don’t practise this deep reflecting thinking, but will rather go about feeling hopeless, gloomy, doing nothing to get out of it and waiting for someone or a miracle to save them. Sadly, this hardly happens, and they just end up sinking deeper into gloom.

– Positive Thoughts: There are many school of thoughts that when you think positive thoughts, good things happen, and when you think negative, bad things happen. According to this theory, many people are more prone to bad thoughts and self discrimination, but thankfully, good thoughts are stronger than negative thoughts, thus lower probability of the many bad thoughts becoming reality. It is thereby imperative to be conscious of your thoughts and re-channel them as soon as you see that they are gearing towards negativity. Renown author James Allen talks about this in detail in his book ‘As A Man Thinketh’ influenced by a verse in the Bible from Proverbs, chapter 23, verse 7 which says:

For as (A Man) he thinketh in his heart, so is he…

Steward well on what you have presently
While discussing reflecting, I mentioned that your present situation could be a setup for your big break through. What this means is that as uncomfortable as your present situation is, you are in it because there are things you need to learn that you will need when you get to where you’re destined to. Thus, against this backdrop, it is very important to steward well on what you have now, especially if it puts food on your table regardless of how you feel about it. When you work hard and steward well on what you have:

– People notice, even if they don’t say it and can in a good word for you when the opportunity arises;
– You could meet someone, get an opportunity that could pave way for something better;
– You garner experience that could come in handy in future;
– It shows responsibility, maturity because no matter how passionate you are about anything, there might; be days that you don’t feel up to it, but you still need to show up and work;
– It build your character, and toughens your resilience.

Even in the Bible, Jesus Christ talks about stewarding on what you have using the parable of the 10 talents in Matthew 25:14–30. It is therefore key to do your best with what you have, be it a job, a business etc even if it’s not working out as well as you hope. If you keep at it things will certainly improve or a better door will open as a result.

I’ll leave you with the last thing I told my friend: life is full of ups and downs, unexpected curves and turns. It is however our responsibility to control how we react to our circumstances through mindfulness and all that is listed above.

One thing is sure, we cannot control what life throws at us at any point in time, but we can control how we react to it, choosing always to make lemonades out of life’s lemons.

Business / Man’s New Doughnut Store Sells Out After Son Tweeted He Was Sad by Smoke2015: 11:12am On Mar 11, 2019
In today’s world, the power of social media can not be oversized.

Everyday lives of people are being transformed globally, by something they posted on social media after people take it upon themselves to share. Even brands these days are using social media in more organic ways than ever to push their message to their target audience.

One of such examples, is one young man, who simply identifies himself as Billy, who posted about his Dad’s new doughnut shop– Billy’s Donuts, on micro blogging social networking site Twitter.

Billy posted:

My dad is sad cause no one is coming to his new donut shop

His followers and other Twitter users were moved by his one line tweet which showed love and concern for his Dad that that they took it upon themselves to share, making it go viral. As at press time the said tweet has been retweeted over 200 thousand and liked by over half a million people. Yes you read right, half a million people. Imagine just 1% of that number actually patronising the store!

While we do not know if up to 1% visited the store, what known from Billy's update is that his Dad's doughnuts sold out because the tweet went viral. He was quick to share the address of the store once he saw that his initial tweet had gathered steam. He also shared the Instagram handle of the store which had 71 followers as at when he shared the screenshot. As the time of the post, the page has garnered over 49,000 followers. His Dad's store is also no doubt now one of the most popular private owned 'donut' stores in the US, thanks to his one liner on Twitter. The power of social media is simply phenomenal!

One thing is sure, Billy's Donut will have an overflow of customers for a minute, or even permanently if they taste as good as they look. Billy used social media to push his Dad's business, and that gave it a boost thousands of dollars spent on direct advertising will probably not have achieved.

Just wanted to update yall! We completely sold out of donuts and kolaches! You are all amazing. I can't thank everyone enough for coming out and supporting local businesses. This means so much to my family ❤️ pic.twitter.com/o3GQcKvVnG

— billy (@hibillyby) March 10, 2019

There are a lot of lessons to learn from this story, the most important being that social media shouldn’t be used just for fun and banter. It should also be a channel to make money and promote businesses. You may not be as lucky as Billy, to post a life changing, viral one-liner, but you can still use it to promote your business and make good income as a result of using social media.

Long story short, be like Billy.

Family / Man Shares Emotional Tale About How He Cried Because Of His Mum by Smoke2015: 1:48pm On Mar 08, 2019
A Nigerian man has shared an emotional story of how his mum toiled and worked very hard to make ends meet, and how on a particular occasion he cried publicly because of the hardship his mum has to endure.

In his thread, posted on micro blogging social networking site Twitter, he narrates how he came back home from school, years ago when he was in the polytechnic. According to his story, he called his mum on the phone, asking for her whereabout and she refused to disclose.

But after hours of waiting un-end, he became worried, and insisted she told him her whereabouts which she reluctantly did. When he arrived where she was, he found that she had being doing dishes at a local canteen all day, only to get paid N250, all in effort to raise some money for him, which he had requested that he needed in school. He recalls that for the meagre N250 wage, his Mum had to do dishes from 8:30am- 9:30pm. Heartbreaking right? Thankfully, his story gets better and has a good ending.

He then goes ahead to say that after the N250 ordeal, he became even more determined to succeed and today, lives in the USA. He is now able to provide for his mum, ensure she lacks nothing and even brings her to the USA from time to time.

It's really heartwarming to see that his Mum today is enjoying the fruit of her labour and things worked out him and his family. Such an inspiring story!

Food / Lady Boils Tomatoes And Onions Before Blending (Photos) by Smoke2015: 3:19pm On Mar 05, 2019
To the average person who cooks, there is a <strong>general method of cooking stew in Nigeria</strong>, which involves blending the pepper, boiling and/or frying. At least this is the method I have always used to make fingerleaking stew...lol.

But a Nigeria Lady on micro blogging social networking site Twitter has shared an interesting, different method, which I have never heard of, prior to seeing her tweet. According to her, instead of blending then boiling the pepper, she boils the pepper raw, then blends.

Some curious Twitter users asked some valid questions, amidst admitting that it was a cooking method they had never heard before and were willing to give it a try. One of the questions was whether or not the pepper would loose all its nutrients in the pre boiling process. The Lady, Louisa Agunbiade responded:

When you boil after blending , it’s exactly the same thing as boiling before blending…you are not required to boil after you’ve blended it…just proceed to make your stew…you cook it for about 10 to 15 minutes so there’s no nutrient getting lost.

Another Twitter user asked if she blends the pepper with the water used for boiling, to which she responded:

I actually let mine get burnt a kit for extra flavor, doesn’t need extra water since it’s soft from boiling, but if it doesn’t blend, add jut a drop of water to get it going .

It is interesting to note that in some responses to her tweet, some Twitter users while acknowledging the method suggested that one can take this method of cooking stew a step further. They opined that the taste of the stew gets an even better flavour by grilling or even baking the pepper before blending instead of cooking. Others suggested that after the boiling, the pepper should be grated or manually grinded using local means or grinding stone for even better taste.

Have you ever heard of this method to cook stew? If no, will you be giving it a try

Health / Woman Diagnosed With 'abdominal Tumor' Gives Birth To Twins by Smoke2015: 6:51pm On Mar 01, 2019
A Nigerian Medical Doctor has narrated the bizarre circumstances that saw his Cousin deliver a set of twins after all pregnancy tests throughout the pregnancy came back as negative, it has emerged.

The Doctor, who simply gave his name as Maxvayshia on micro blogging social networking site Twitter, said that the incident has challenged everything he learnt as a medical doctor and opened him up to believing in miracles/and or things that weren't medically explainable.

According to the alumnus of University of Benin, his Cousin visited over 14 different Consultants and Professors in different hospitals spanning across Nigeria  with no pregnancy detected. Shockingly however,  the abdomen of the woman in question enlarged progressively like that of a pregnant woman over the course of the 9 months.

He recounts that she had all the symptoms of a pregnant woman and felt pregnant, but the conflicting advice from several Obstetricians got her confused and even worried after some suggested that what she had could potentially be an abdominal tumour which needed to be investigated.

The diagnosis from the Doctors got the woman in question paranoid to the point that psychiatric evaluation was recommended, especially when by the 9th month a repeated scan was carried out on her heavily protruding stomach, and yet no pregnancy was detected, the Doctor narrated.

Read the full story below:

So, my cousin missed her period 9 months ago but pregnancy tests read negative all along, all scans done revealed absolutely nothing, even though her abdomen was progressively enlarging and has d size of a typical 9 month gestation. 14 different Consultants and Professors...

In over 10 different hospitals between Abuja, Port Harcourt and Lagos talked to her althrough 9 months and convinced her that she couldn't be pregnant but an abdominal tumour is suspected for which she is to be investigated. She was very sure she was pregnant but....

The counselling of the Obstetricians got her very confused as she was experiencing all the classical symptoms of pregnancy. Repeated the scan on the 9th month, still nothing revealed. Even though she was very heavy. She became paranoid and psychiatric evaluation was suggested....

She opted out and continued wandering in her confusion, with encouragement from friends and family.
She recently suddenly went into Labour and was delivered of a set of female non-identical twins through vaginal delivery by a midwife who happened to be there at the time....

This challenges everything i know as a Doctor and makes me question everything again. If events of d present times and unbelievable miracles do not make you question things you already know and probe deeper in reflection in a bid to know more, then you should reassess yourself.

Business / Man Makes Strong Case For Pure Water Hawkers by Smoke2015: 2:46pm On Mar 01, 2019
A Nigerian man, who identifies himself as King Millie on Twitter has made a strong case for pure water sellers, admonishing Nigerians to be kinder to them.

In a series of threaded tweets, the young guy who describes himself as a blogger and OAP breaks down the rigours and hardship satchet water popularly known as pure water sellers in this clime have to endure, only to earn a meagre N40.00. Some times, they  even run into debt and have to pay a fine of N5000 where they are caught by law enforcement agents.

He suggests that instead of just giving money to 'able bodies beggers', these pure water hawkers are a better fit for benevolence, given how hard they work  and make very little daily.

Read his thread(a series of connected Tweets from one person) below:

According to pure water sellers. Sometimes, It Takes About 6 Hours To Sell 20 Sachets Of Water Which Amounts To A Total Of N200 (less than 1Dollar).
From The N200, The Profit Is Only About N40 As The Pure Water Sellers Have To Pay Ice block Which Was Used To Cool The Water.

Bottom line Is That Some Of Them Make Only N40 In 6 Hours Of Hustling Under The Hot Sun, Risking Their Lives On Major Roads And Always At The Mercy Of The Environmental Protection Board Who Whip Them With Cane When Caught; And Fine Them N5,000 when they are caught.

Sadly, Passengers And Drivers Reach The Traffic Stops, They Prefer To Dash N100, N200 Or Even N500 To Beggars And Fake Sufferers Who Sometimes Make About N1,500 A Day Doing Nothing But Begging, Leaving Them Richer And Safer Than The Pure Water Sellers Who Are Entrepreneurs...

So When Next You Are At A Traffic Stop, Please:
1. Dash The Pure Water Seller Instead
2. Buy Pure Water To Patronize Them And If The Change Is (N10, Or Even N20, You Can Leave It With Them)
3. Say Something Nice To Them. Greet Them, Encourage Them.

Slow Down, Don't Knock Them Down.
5. Even If You Wont Buy The Pure Water, If They Ask You To Buy, Rather Than Ignoring Them And Facing Front As If They Are Not Humans, You Can Look At Them, Smile And Say "Thank You".

Such an eye opening thread. So kind of him!

Lying at the center of our naturally vivid and chromatic ecosystem, PANTONE Living Coral is evocative of how coral reefs provide shelter to a diverse kaleidoscope of color.

About Pantone Color of the Year
For 20 years, Pantone’s Color of the Year has influenced product development and purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, and industrial design, as well as product, packaging, and graphic design.

The Color of the Year selection process requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis. To arrive at the selection each year, Pantone’s color experts at the Pantone Color Institute comb the world looking for new color influences. This can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, playstyles, and socio-economic conditions. Influences may also stem from new technologies, materials, textures, and effects that impact color, relevant social media platforms and even upcoming sporting events that capture worldwide attention.

How Pantone Expects People To Use Living Coral
On how the institute expects people to use ‘living coral’, Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute gives more perspective on the shade. She said:

You know some years, we choose a color and we see it more as an accent, especially in the home space. Something where just a little spot of color will go so far. But even though coral is so bright and bold, it’s really something we’re seeing people embrace on a larger scale. It’s the kind of color you could paint a whole room. It would be great in an entryway or a bathroom. You could see someone with a great coral couch. It’s a shade people want to live with, which is exactly why we chose it.

Pantone Color Institute
The Pantone Color Institute is a consulting service within Pantone that forecasts global color trends and advises companies on color in brand identity and product development, for the application and integration of color as a strategic asset. Recognized around the world as a leading source of color information through seasonal trend forecasts, custom color development, and palette recommendations for product and corporate identity, Pantone Color Institute partners with global brands to leverage the power, psychology and emotion of color in their design strategy.

Jobs/Vacancies / Two Sides Of A Coin: A Tale Of Two Job Seekers by Smoke2015: 3:34pm On Jan 30, 2019
A young Lady recently narrated on Twitter how a human resource personnel helped her cousin who has been unemployed for 6 years.
According to the tweets posted on the micro blogging social networking site, he was called by an HR executive from one of the firms he applied to. He then pleaded with the executive, asking to reschedule the interview.
The curious HR exec is said to have asked: “May I know why?” He then truthfully told her that he had no money fro transportation or decent clothes to wear for the interview and that he needed time to rally round for this.

The Twitter user Iremide who narrated her cousin’s interesting experience went on to say that three days later the HR executive called her cousin again, asking for his account details. What happened unknown to her cousin was that after he spoke with the HR executive, she informed two of her colleagues and the three of them decided to pool money together for him for clothes and transportation for the interview. He then went for the interview and thankfully, he got the job! Beautiful story right?

People have been showering the unknown HR executive with encomium and prayers and have even compared her to another HR executive who similarly called a job seeker and talked about it in a tweet. She wrotesadsee screenshot)

This HR executive got mixed reactions to her tweet with many siding with the job seeker. Other’s however think that the job seeker’s attitude is what cost him the job opportunity and he could have explained why he couldn’t make it, and not just say he was ‘busy’.

What are your thoughts on these two stories?

Politics / Sanwo-olu And 'the Belle' At The Night Shift Coliseum by Smoke2015: 12:05pm On Jan 30, 2019
On Sunday the 27th day of of January, I attended the Grand House Reception, GHR, held in honour of Lagos State APC Gubernatorial candidate Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu at the Niteshift Coliseum in Lagos.

The event which started at 6pm was attended by renown Entertainers, Politicians, Policy makers, Captains of industry etc. It kicked off with refreshments on the red carpet, interviews and phatic greetings amongst old friends and acquaintances. At about 7pm, the guest of honour Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu (herein after referred to as BOS) arrived. He joined the guests on the red carpet and spent another 30 minutes exchanging pleasantries. By this time I had pleaded with the security at the door to let me into the ground floor of the main hall because my feet hurt really bad, and it was unbelievably stuffy on the red carpet. So I sat inside on a marble pavement where I was joined by veteran actor Taiwo Obileye and two other elderly people who were equally exhausted from the red carpet activity. From this vantage point I observed those coming and going into the rest room(the bouncer only allowed people to come in for this reason), and the super crowded red carpet.

Soon, it was time to go upstairs to the main hall of the Coliseum. Thanks to my early entry, I was able to enter in good time and get good seats for my friends and I in the main hall. 5 minutes later guests where asked to give a standing ovation for the Guest of honour BOS as he arrived and made his way upstairs the platinum session with his entourage and other politicians.

Sanwoolu and his style of greeting! You'd feel like he's known you forever Too real! #SanwooluGHR pic.twitter.com/kXidwECPUi

— Moji Delano (@MojiDelanoBlog) January 27, 2019

One of the things I found pretty interesting was the way BOS greeted people including me and my friends at my table as he made his way to his seat. One would think he knew most of us personally, and it was very difficult to tell those he was meeting for the first time and those he knew personally. This was my second time of seeing him closely and his warm style of greeting was pretty similar to the first meeting. So much so that one of the ladies I attended the event with  said: "compared to how he looks in his pictures he seems so friendly and young upclose. Never saw him as someone who could be this warm and friendly". I agreed with her and told her I felt the same way when I met him the first time. But I digress, this article is not about how warm Sanwo-olu is, so read on. Lol.

The event kicked off with the national anthem and beautiful renditions from the Night Shift Coliseum band. And then the presentation of plaques to BOS and his running mate, Dr. Obafemi Hamsat by the Chief host and Guv’nor of Niteshift Coliseum, Mr. Ken Calebs-Olumese and other VIP's. After this, came the moment everyone was waiting for, the interactive session between BOS and guests at the event. And this ladies and gentlemen is what this article is really about. It was during this interactive session that most bizarre thing I've ever witnessed at a public event in my 7 years as a Blogger and media person happened.

The anchor of the question and answer session set out clear rules as with most events of this kind. His rules were clear and simple: Ask just two questions, keep it brief and simple because of time and other people on the line. Every one who came to ask questions kept this in mind and adhered to the rules until it got to this Lady  La-Belle's turn. And what should have been a few minutes of questions turned into an outre session of drama.

'La-Belle' as she identified her self started off as just another guest asking questions but for her altiloquent attitude and American accent which she tried not to make too obvious but couldn't help. Then she insisted on asking more than two questions and wanted to take her time doing so. The anchor for obvious reasons wasn't going to allow it and tried to politely stop her. At this point, all hell was let loose and she started throwing tantrums, screaming at the top of her voice. She started asking aggressively  why shouldn't be allowed to ask a smart question, and why the anchor was trying to stop her. Bear in mind that she was only entitled to two questions which she already asked. And while she was doing so, she was taking her time and giving dramatic pauses ( imagine a woman who is about to lose it and tries to take in some air some some seconds) in between. At a point she unscrewed the mic and then the crowd started to murmur and boo because others who came to ask questions before 'La-Belle' spoke into the mic fixed on the podium. Even the Guv’nor of Niteshift Coliseum, Mr. Ken Calebs-Olumese spoke into the mic, but this Lady felt the need to unscrew the mic, to make her point. The organisers then tried to stop her from removing the mic but BOS butted in and told them to let her speak. He also said that as an aspirant, he understood the need to be accommodating and act  like a father to all and the crowd applauded. Unfortunately all this wasn't captured in the video circulating online. This is also  why in the 28 second video that is circulating online, you see her holding the mic.

Another thing I found very interesting was that the question she rabble-roused and created a scene for was basically the same question she asked as her second question, the question bothering on Landlords being  menaces to tenants and how he would handle it if he became Governor. So I'm still as stunned as I was on Sunday relieving the event because there was absolutely no need for  the drama. Watch the 28 second clip on the over 10 minutes drama unfold below:

In the video above, we see La-Belle question BOS and shockingly moves close to him with the Mic to the horror of the crowd. BOS asks her to take her seat since she had already asked her questions and someone takes her off the stage.

What I found pretty impressive was how well BOS handled the situation especially the invasion of his personal space. Even I, as a guest was super stunned at what unfolded and couldn't ratiocinate what I had just witnessed. This Lady's actions wasn't just aggressive, she uncouth as well. And as she stormed off after she was escorted off the stage, she walked towards my table, faces me and started asking why it was a problem to be 'smart' and ask a 'smart question'. I just starred at her in utter bewilderment because I was even more stunned by the fact that she believed the ladies at my table will support the reprehensible display of shame she just exhibited. Some elderly women, part of the VIP guests then came to her and tried to pacify her while BOS answered her questions.

Thinking back now, I still can't wrap my head around the unwarranted drama, especially when she ended up asking the same question twice. So this begs to question, did some people put her up to it? Was she trying to deliberately rile him up in the hope of getting a negative reaction? Another reason why I cant help but feel that there is more to La-belle is the way some social media trolls have supported her actions excusing it as that of a Nigerian frustrated by bad leadership and politicians. This notion is of course preposterous , but even if I were to go with it, BOS is not yet Governor, he is still hoping to be, and no one except God can say for a fact that that will happen. So why get so worked up and negatively adrenalised? Questions, questions.

Culture / 10 Things To Focus On In 2019 by Smoke2015: 3:17pm On Jan 22, 2019
2019 has only just begun. And while January is almost at its end, this is still a good time to make life changing decisions that can carom you to greatness- in the long term, or at least improve the quality of your life in the short term. Doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results is almost tantamount to madness or mildly put, delusion. So now is the time to reflect, make important changes and strive to grow. Against this backdrop, here are 10 things MDB thinks to FOCUS on, for a better and more productive year.

1) Your Purpose:
Have you ever really sat down to think about why God created you and made you how you are? Have you pondered on what your purpose is? Have you analysed your current situation and thought about whether or not you are fulfilling that purpose or at least are on the journey to doing so? If you have, good. But if you haven’t now is the time to start. However, to actually really understand your purpose, you need to first figure out who you are. Many people walk around like they have it all together yet have no clue about who they are without external influence or indirect coercion as to what the society wants them to be. So this year, really take time out and consciously ask questions and try to find yourself, what your purpose is and what you want to achieve. Praying about this helps a whole lot too.

2) Physical Strength and Wellbeing :
If you’re like me that keeps putting away exercise till the next day(don’t judge me), the time to start is NOW. Exercising as we very well know is not just to lose weight but to keep fit. It is also a good way to kick off your day with great energy and keep your energy levels up. Eating healthy is also very important. I’m not saying go all leafy and eat only fruits and vegetables. Certainly, this is not for everyone. The key thing is to do everything in moderation. So this year, consciously make effort to exercise and eat healthy, or at least the later.

3) Mental Wellness:

Globally Mental health disorders are projected to reach 15% by 2020. By then, it is estimated that common mental disorders such as depression, substance abuse disorders, etc will disable more people than complications frm AIDS, heart disease, accidents combined!

Even more, in Nigeria, an estimated 20%–30% of of pole are believed to suffer from mental disorders. Yet many of us still don’t take our mental health seriously. Change this in 2019. Don’t pretend to be ok if you’re not. Think and make a note of things that trigger you and stress you out unnecessary. Make conscious effort to do away with them as much as possible. Where it is impossible to completely do away with them, figure out a way to manage the situation or at least stay away from those things. Even more, search your self and how you react to things. Most of the things you react to you can actually control. Sometimes, just having the consciousness that you can control how you react to things and deciding not let any thing or any one disturb your inner peace can improve your mental health tremendously. But above all, seek help if you need to. Talk friends about how you’re feeling, and if that doesn’t help, find a professional you can talk to or reach out to the people at Mentally Aware on social media. For some, prayer helps too, at least that worked for me.

4) Becoming A Better You

One of the things you should focus on in 2019 is becoming a better version of your self, and deciding daily to become better than the person you were yesterday. Again here you need to reflect and look inwards at yourself, your vices and how you can work on them. Becoming a better person will improve your life, and the quality of your relationships. It will even attract better friendships and more positive energy. But doing this actually begins with being sincere with yourself and understanding who you are( see first point). Then you can earmark the things you need to do better and ratiocinate how you can improve your person.

5) Have More Fun

Working hard is one of the secrets of success but having fun is almost as important. This is because making time to have fun balances your personality and can even improve your productivity. When you have fun you do what you love, and fun could mean different things to different people. Just make sure there is a balance with your work life and you don’t have fun when you ought to be working and vice versa. Having fun also gives room, to hang out with friends and family and enjoy some of the priceless things of life. So after working hard all week, find time to do something fun, that relaxes and excites you.
