Feminists are welcome to explain this away. I'm all ears.

If you’re ever trapped in a burning building, just pray the firefighter
climbing up to rescue you isn’t Rebecca Wax. Or someone like her, who’s
been given an EZ-Pass through firefighting training for the sake of gender
equity.
This week Wax, who repeatedly flunked the rigorous physical test
required by the New York City Fire Department, will graduate anyway,
The Post reported.
All over the nation, fire departments are easing physical standards, in
response to litigation to increase the number of women firefighters.
It’s roiling fire departments, and the turmoil is a preview of what’s to
come for the US military, which has committed to opening all combat
roles to women by 2016.
Wax tried six times to pass New York’s Functional Skills Test within the
17-minute, 50-second deadline. Five times she couldn’t finish at all; on
the sixth try, she needed 22 minutes. Women’s groups claim the test is
needlessly difficult and unfairly bars women.
Trainees wearing 50 pounds of gear and breathing through an air tank
must climb six stories, raise ladders, break down doors and drag a dummy
through a dark tunnel, all at breakneck speed. Sounds like firefighting.
The city’s test is tougher than some tests elsewhere, but city buildings are
higher. Nevertheless, Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro gave Wax a pass
because she had good performance on other measures, including academic
tests.
Nigro wants to significantly boost the number of women in the FDNY —
now only 0.5 percent of the rank-and-file — and he wants to do it before
he’s staring at a court order.
Court orders are compelling Chicago to relax its standards. Two federal
class-action lawsuits brought by women who flunked that city’s
firefighting tests claimed that the exams required more than what is
actually needed to be an effective firefighter.
Women account for 3.4 percent of the Chicago force, compared with 5.7
percent of firefighters nationally. Chicago authorities settled the case last
month, admitting into training the previously rejected women and paying
millions to others no longer eligible.
In Los Angeles, Mayor Eric Garcetti is plainly unhappy with this year’s
all-male class of firefighting graduates.
There were four women among the 44 recruits who started last December,
but they all dropped out.
Desperate to diversify, Garcetti paid the RAND Corp. a whopping
$270,000 for advice. RAND’s brilliant insight was that LA should recruit
women athletes who can take the grueling training. Well, duh!
That’s what San Marcos, Calif., learned upon hiring Siene Freeman.
Several other female recruits had washed out, but for her — a former
marathoner and weight-lifter — the training was a piece of cake.
Municipalities that already have women firefighters are being hit with
lawsuits.
But more often these are about sexual harassment rather than
qualifications.
This year alone, Philadelphia, Tampa and at least a dozen other cities are
being sued for allowing a culture of bawdy, suggestive behavior. Tampa’s
fire department personnel chief, known as “Uncle Touchy,” just resigned
after admitting he had hugged, massaged and flirted with female
firefighters.
Many departments face the practical problem that firefighters — male and
female — work 24 hour shifts, and sleep in an open bunk room, with no
privacy curtains or separate changing area.
That’s hardly conducive for a professional working environment. Nigro
says he is going to remedy these problems in New York.
Then again, the Tampa female firefighters are fanning the flames.
To raise money for burn victims, they put out a calendar. Trouble is, some
of them posed in bikinis, sending a mixed message.
The touchy issue of women in traditional men’s occupations will be center
stage this fall, when the Pentagon announces its “gender-neutral” rules for
military assignments.
Some feminists argue that the Marine Corps’ grueling Combat Endurance
Test is more of an “initiation rite” than a fair appraisal of physical ability,
the same argument Wax’s supporters use about New York’s firefighting
exam.
Joint Chiefs Chairman Martin Dempsey ominously announced at a
Pentagon briefing that if “a particular standard is so high that a woman
couldn’t make it, the burden is now on the service to come back and
explain . . . does it really have to be that high?”
Military brass — like officials overseeing New York’s fire department —
are too ready to lower standards, never mind the consequences in the field.
Is that really a victory for women?

WhatDoYouMean:
Thanks for the insight. The land is 100 X 200 (2 plots of land). The soil is standard AGL. Looking at the description of the house I gave up there and the supposed facilities, I think a professional designer/builder should be able to come up with a workable estimate. As for the roof, I think Vicmoore has given me a sound backstage insight. What do you think you can do to the roof to amend it? Any pictures to support the type of roof you propose for us?
We are only interested in getting someone who can give us that exact design, including all of our descriptions with professional and approved estimates
Anyone can give u a conservative or an outrageous estimate, there are no dimensions on 3d, this project is somewhat big. Workable estimate can only be gotten when the arc & struct. Drawings are done. a Qs or an experienced blder or civil engr. Can take the estimate. So I suggest u contact a land surv. & an architect. visit any of the architectural thread & discussed with them. Thereafter an arc, blder, or engr. Will take it up from there, then practical construction cost can be discussed depending on ur finishes taste..

If the area is waterlogged, then a soil test must be done to determine the type of foundation, but whether waterlogged or not, it's always safer to test the soil, since it's a storey building...
RomanceRe: (photos): King Of Swaziland Publicly Test Girls Virginity Before Choosing A Wife by snakebeat: 5:25pm On Aug 05, 2015
PunkyVeer:
This story is not completely true. In Swaziland & parts of South Africa they do virginity testing. IT IS NOT COMPULSORY. Those that take part in it, do so on their own accord.

King Muswati DOES NOT choose a wife from the little children, he chooses from the older girls & to my understanding, the girls have a say. They can say, no.

Btw, even his daughters take part in the ceremony. It is called Reed Dance or uMhlanga. The history behind it is that, in the past, they used to send virgin girls to go pick up the reed that would be used to build the palace's cattle kraal. I don't know how it is in West Africa, but in the SADC, the kraal is the most important part of a homestead. It should be pure (women aren't allowed in the kraal) because that's where most family rituals are done, so I guess that's why virgins were allocated the task of picking up the building material. Now times are different, however, not every girl that claims to be a virgin is a virgin, like in the olden days, that's when the testing comes in, just to make sure they're still "pure" before carrying such an important royal task. It has now become part of their lifestyle to remain virgins because they want to be part of the celebrations & of course some have the hope of being the King's next bride. They're there to peacock for him--some & some are just there for the ceremony because it is considered an honour to be part of that.

Anyway, the 1st pic is king muswati's own daughter. She also takes part in the reed dance. The 2nd pic is of the girls, the potential brides to be aka palace's virgin reed pickers. 3rd pic is an example of a kraal.
Quite revealing....

Yes pay what you can but it doesn't apply to everyone... I know of a guy who payed 1k as dowry... My mom's bride price was up to a mil. Different families, different things.. It's not like the parents are poor but most of them want to see how much you have to take care of their daughter. In kalabari if its iya its hella expensive, if its igwo , it's cheap.. Go for any kind that suits you..

Because you can't pay bride price doesn't mean everybody should give their dota for free.. I know of a place in Yoruba land wer dey don't pay dowry.. Go there.

If I give you an iphone 6+ for free ND u saving money to buy it... Which do you think you will value?
Is the bolded one millimetre or million? That's outrageous! Even slaves weren't sold for such an outrageous amount, that's pure greed...
I guess ur mum is from igbo? That tribe should really work on their bride price.

I can see most women defending tradition because of bride price, but these same women will be quick to condemn this same tradition when it comes to a man having certain rights as the head. How bias can women be...
Btw, women are humans, not iphone....

opalu:
Why I asked about hardcore is that anywhere it is used and well rammed, the 'German floor' will not require major reinforcement. And if the test shows a soil of very high bearing capacity, plus if the panelling of the floor is not critical, then mass concrete will be just fine.
See that I spelt out the conditions. So that many people won't go and use mass concrete for ground floor where reinforcement is required and then experience structural failure.
Generally the ground floor is subjected to upward forces from the earth as well as downward forces from the dead and imposed loads from top. And you know the law that says actions and reactions are equal and opposite. That is equilibrium state.

Reinforcement helps make this possible in most (not all) buildings. Rebar caters for tensile forces while concrete takes care of compressive forces.

Hope I have not been too theoritical on this.

I'm calling an architect an artisan, you can continue to disagree.

My rate is not what's in question and this is a non sequitur. This is a serious conversation and I do not wish for this to delve into the more common Nairaland tit for tat debacle.

The intent of the thread is specific, have you paid an architect lately, if so how much? This is not a bash on architects. It also matters less to me what your profession is.
Honestly I wouldn't be wrong saying u opened this thread to just dis architects. Artisans are craftsmen, referring to an architect as an artisan isn't appealing to say the least. I bet u wouldn't want to know what it takes to bag a first degree in architecture.

Since u already have a sketch of what u want, why not give it to a draftsman, so he can do the drawings. U don't really need to engage an architect when u already have a sketch of u want to erect, most especially when u don't have the money, all u need is a draftsman.

Prices of all services rendered by individuals are value-laden, u know this, It's just like booking an artist for a show, u can get upcoming artist for as low as 20k, but I don't think u can get wizkid for that same amount. If d price of a particular architect doesn't suit u, then go for another. There are many architects out there, I know of an architect that doesn't do drawings for less than 1m, he's worth the price, a prof & fnia. U wouldn't expect a club to buy messi & maybe one player who is still upcoming with the same price, all because they are all players. U'll get architects that will design for 2k, an undergraduate can even design for free. But the old ones will definitely charge u.

It does not apply to architecture alone, just like saying u want to travel by air, when u can only afford travelling by land. Go for what u can afford...

Truth is that there is little a house owner or professional can do to totally remove underground water. However proper drainage must be done to eliminate surface flooding and retention of water around the building for too long since most buildings in the highbrow estates were done without making allowance for the said 'worst case scenario '.

Quite true. For a relationship/marriage to thrive and subsist one must conduct themselves in an imprudent and fatuous manner most of the time. The moment one becomes conscious and brainy the affair might just hit it dead end. Wiseness and love can never co-exist. For love to thrive, wiseness has to be abjured.

It's near impossible for a marital union to preserve without turning a blind eye to a lot of things. For two people to come together and cohabitates with their true state of mind without overlooking certain misdemeanour of their partner, their union is heading for the rocks.

Humans wants are insatiable and we're becoming ravenous in whatever we embark on lately. Attempting to satisfying one's self is unattainable needless to say another person. This quenchless habit of us is responsible for the high rate of divorce proliferating the world today. Everyone aims to be the other person on the other end whom they think is happier than they are. The world is make believe, no one/couple is without an enigma irrespective of what they want the public to believe.

There's no marriage without issues. Most couple are just living together for the kids sake and prolly to forestall side-talks from friends and relatives. Others just to preserve the union. Happiness is usually far from the reason why marriages last.
U're a very sensible fellow.
