Its actually under the portfolio of LGAs. But since most governors withhold and use the allocation of the LGAs, they now have to take up the jobs of the local govt chairmen

Which makes it even more tragic. Because it leaves LG Chairmen with nothing else to do but to steal public funds and still remain inder the radar. Its either they scrap that tier of government or they grant them complete autonomy.

A classic case of the more you look, the less you see.

But seriously, looking at the photos, all I see there are interlocking tiles and painted walls. Now, considering that that motor park (Ikeja motor park) is an existing one, which means they didn't buy the land. So, by my estimate, this renovation project couldn't have cost more than N4 million.

Can't the Ikeja Local Government council afford the N4m for this renovation? That is an amount that the park can generate in a few days of activity.

However, like I said earlier, we live in an era of the more you look, the less you see.

Why won't the gutters be dirty? See all the aboki on the street. Jobless, lazy, begging... they will of course make the area less appealing with their waste.

To completely beautify Lagos means you have to remove them don the state and send them back to their homes up north.

Even the international airport is full of them, begging attempting to carry your luggage some even trying to steal.

In higher societies they put regulations in place to curb this.

I think we should train ourselves to take responsibility for our own failures.

So it was the aboki that planned and built the open drainage systems in Lagos, abi?

Maybe you should see the other pictures of some more filthy drainages around Lagos here:

Check them out and then report back here to explain how aboki caused these filthiness.

Politics / Re: If You Were Ambode, What 2 Things Would You Do To Improve Traffic In Lagos? by solutionist: 11:34am On Apr 17, 2018
One thing I would do if I were in Ambode’s shoes is this.

I would build jetties around Lagos in order to take advantage of the Inland Waterways. The inland waterways mode of transport has a great potential to decongest the roads.

Building jetties and acquiring ferries does not cost anything close to how much other mass transit transport infrastructure cost.

Building jetties is far cheaper than building Light trains, Cable cars or even building roads.

If I were in Ambode’s position, I will collaborate with the National Inland Watersway of Nigeria to build several jetties at Marina, Ikorodu, Lekki, Epe, Apapa, Oworoshoki, Ajah, Badagry, etc.

I will then invite the private sector to participate by bringing in ferries. These ferries must conform to the maximum safety standards.

This system will also create thousands of jobs. And I will establish a state agency that will be saddled with the responsibility of monitoring and managing the traffic on the waterways.

If this can be achieved, millions of commuters will be taken off the roads. And Lagosians won’t be wasting valuable man-hours in traffic.

My 2 Kobo.

Amosun is simply unbelievable.

Apparently, the man embarks on projects without carrying out proper cost analysis.

All over Ogun state are projects that are abandoned due to lack of funds. For instance, there are almost 15 overhead bridges that being constructed simultaneously. Some of them are being built across what can be better described as bush paths.

Akute alone has about 3 bridges being built at the same time.

Of course, building bridges are the surest way for people in government today to corruptly enrich themselves.

I sincerely wish that the Lagos state government extends this their "transformation agenda" to the supply of pipe-borne water to the residents of Lagos state, that is if it wants to be taken seriously as a true Mega-City.

I must say this is a beautiful project. I hope the can maintain it.

Now, to answer your question. Well, as for me, and looking at the photos, all I see are the building and interlocking tiles.

So, the main cost will be on the building and the interiors. If I was to quote to build this bus terminal, I will quote N100million.

However, any government contractor that wish to win such a contract should also include in his quotes monies for kickbacks and bribes.

So, at the end of the day, such a project might turn out to cost tax payers about N5billion.

This is the very sad reality in Naija.

You have said it all. I wish the government could make the cost of such projects public. At least for accountability sake. Often, we are so caught up in the euphoria of commissioning a project that we dont bother to ask questions like how much was spent on the project being commissioned.

I hope Ambode would come out and announce tomorrow how much this project costs the tax payers.

Besides, that place is not a park; it is a major road, the Okada men impede free movement of pedestrian, If you reside around that axis you will understand better. It's some sort of relief to the pedestrians now.

I was there too. I witnessed it. Yes. The police shot severally into the air to scare off the Okada riders whose okadas were seized. Nobody can ascertain the actual number of police. But they were in very huge numbers.

Yes. The population of Okada is much around there. But what do you expect when there are no motorable roads from Berger to places like Akute/Ajuwon. With the terrible state of the Berger/Alagbole/Akute road, how are commuters suppose to commute to and from work?

With the absence of motorable road or a more decent alternative, this is just a case of government playing to the gallery.

Sunborn Yacht Hotel: Lagos Floating White Elephant - BY Sahara Reporter (Sept. 11, 2009)

Kayode Ogundamisi visits the much-hyped Sunborn One year after)The Sunborn Yacht Hotel was delivered from the UK in November 2008. Despite claims that it would be put to immediate use upon arrival, nearly one year later it remains unused and derelict.

OUR 1st story: Bola Tinubu Named in Floating Hotel Buy For Lagos: Saharareporters investigations reveals that apart from several other projects in which he is either a direct or indirect beneficiary, the former governor has recently been named in a floating hotel purchase that was concluded few days ago in the United Kingdom. Sources told Saharareporters that the former governor, who has been acting on behalf of the notorious Chagourys (late Gen. Sanni Abacha's partners) to corner juicy construction jobs from the Lagos State government, is directly involved in this deal.

Saharareporters investigations further revealed that the erstwhile Governor of Lagos State, a former chieftain of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), arrived London on Sunday (July 20 2008) night leading a retinue of Lagos State officials, traditional rulers and federal officials that included the state commissioner for Tourism, former Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi, and his Federal counterpart, Ademola Kayode (SAN), as well as a plane load of public relations practitioners and avalanche of reporters of print and electronic media, including 5 staff members of the federally-funded Nigerian Television Authority (NTA).

Tinubu, who is said to be the beneficiary of major juicy contracts from Lagos state since he installed his crony, Babatunde Fashola, as his successor last year, personally handled the hotel deal said to be worth about $40 Million. The deal, which was initially disguised as a public –private partnership between the Lagos State government and some private entities including a commercial bank, is a bona fide contract between Tinubu and the state government according to the latest information available to Saharareporters. The floating hotel, which was based in the UK before its sale, was owned by a Finnish businessman.

When Saharareporters contacted the Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Senator Tokunbo Afikuyomi in London, he explained that the Lagos State government bought into the “Floating Hotel” idea because of shortage of hotel rooms in the Lagos metropolis. Further, he denied that the Chagourys were involved in the present deal; instead he claimed that the entire transaction was a Private Public Partnership (PPP) between the Lagos State government and Diamond bank, a Lagos–based commercial bank. He admitted to Saharareporters that the deal was worth 22 million Euros but curiously stated that the government of Lagos will not be spending a dime on the project, not even a loan guarantee for the project.

Politics / See How GEJ Fought Corruption by solutionist: 3:22pm On Oct 18, 2017
Every Nigerian president comes with a promise to fight corruption.

He, too, was not different.

So, he devised a system known as the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).

With the IPPIS technology, approximately 50,000 ghost workers in the public sector were identified.

And as a result, the nation has been saved approximately N200Billion since the implementation of the IPPIS project.

He also introduced the “cashless” system of money transfer and transaction.

This system was designed to meet up with global best practice of monitoring financial transactions. It was also a strategy for monitoring the transfer of proceeds of corruption.

This system was effective in tracking illegal cash transfers, to the point that MasterCard made Nigeria its regional headquarters for its West/East and Indian Ocean islands zone. Thus raising the profile of Nigeria’s e-commerce industry.

He didn't stop there.

He went further to battle the eternal wave of corruption in the agricultural sector.

First, he placed 16 million farmers on a special database (e-Wallet) of the Ministry of Agriculture. This way, farmers nationwide received subsidized farm inputs without the need for middlemen.

This method radically reduced the age-long corrupt practices in the distribution of fertilizer in that sector.

The implementation of the e-Wallet system saved the national treasury about N50Billion. That is, money that would have gone to some private pockets.

He also took the anti-corruption crusade to the operations of the Nigeria Customs Service.

In 2014, for the first time, using anti-corruption checks, the Nigeria Customs earned as much as N977 Billion (almost 1 trillion) in customs revenue. He effectively shattered the record he set in 2013 (N833Billion).

Till date, this is the highest revenue any Custom regime has ever collected and declared in the history of Nigeria.

Oh, let give a mention how he relieved some of his Ministers for mere allegations of fraud (Stella Oduah) and conflict of interest (Barth Nnaji).

Still, he didn't stop there.

After 12 years of anxious wait by media practitioner, investigators, etc, a law to ensure transparency and accountability in the public sector was instituted.

This occurred when he signed into law the Freedom of Information (FoI) Bill.

By signing this law, he effectively put himself and his government up for public scrutiny.

Meanwhile, a certain "progressive" governor of Lagos state ferociously opposed the domestication of this same FOI law in his state.

Sorry. I digress.

So, signing the FOI bill into law was a victory for democracy, transparency, justice and development.

Also, in order to combat financial improprieties and corruption both in the private and public sector, he designed some technologies and systems to assist in that regard. For instance, the Treasury Single Account (TSA), Bank Verification Number (BVN), etc.

As a result of all these, Nigeria - a country previously ranked by Transparency International (TI) as the 3rd Most Corrupt Nation in the world - improved in the global index of corrupt nations.

First, it improved to the No. 14 position.

Later, in December 3, 2014, it further improved to the No. 39th position.

Till date, Nigeria has not improved beyond that position.

Indeed, this was by no means a perfect anti-corruption crusade. But it was a sincere one.

It was also one with a clear direction. And most importantly, each methods and systems were designed to outlive that administration.

The moral of this story:

The war against institutional and age-long corruption in Nigeria can never be won by crude sensationalism.
