Ebonyi Still Remain The Poorest State Despite Flashy Chinese Lights And Constructions

Why are Ebonyi and Enugu state having such high poverty rates? They are the only Southeast states with poverty rate above the national average. Enugu is 58.13% and Ebonyi is 79.76%. Ebonyi, particularly, is a concern. Its poverty rate is similar to those of Northeast and Northwest states. The Ebonyi Governor has been pleading some sort of political exceptionalism from other southeast states. He is modeled as a high performing Governor. How come his high performance has not translated to significant improvement in social and economic wellbeing of Ebony people? Didn’t they say that authoritarianism is a better model of governance than democracy for African states and societies. So, why haven’t Umahi’s authoritarian politics and repressive leadership style lifted Ebony from chronic poverty as captured by the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS) poverty and inequality report?

Yes, Umahi has built stronger and better roads than most southeast governors. He has also built some needless structures. But he has neglected investment in the economic and social wellbeing of Ebonyi for the past 5 years. His good-enough physical infrastructure initiatives have come at the cost of hugely needed initiatives in economic and social wellbeing. When I traveled to Abakiliki as the Chairman of a private sector-based innovation hub in Ebonyi, I went around the state capital and returned the verdict that the Governor has done well in physical infrastructure, but has failed big on human development. I did not see the level of commercial transactions that will lift up thousands trapped in chronic poverty. I did not see the level of political freedom you expect to see in a southeast state. The atmosphere was repressive and those I spoke to confirmed the significant lack of political freedom in Ebony. Somehow, lack of political freedom may be both an indicator and a cause of economic unfreedom.

Governor Umahi should revise his policy script for the rest of his tenure to change the poor rating of his beloved state. And when he finishes his tenure, Ebonyi people should elect as Governor someone who understand the value of economic and political freedoms and will invest in projects that will improve economic and social wellbeing rather than on concrete and blocks.

https://ebonyitvnews.com/2020/05/16/ebonyi-still-remain-the-poorest-state-despite-flashy-chinese-lights-and-constructions/
In my opinion, Ebonyi despite being economically disadvantaged is considered progressive. Every sector will not develop at the same time. The infrastructures being built in Abakaliki is not for the now, but for the future.

Enugu city if you ask me, is a first class Nigerian city, what I don't understand is the economic stagnancy of it's neighbouring communities.

By Ugochukwu Alaribe, Umuahia

Over 40 youths suspected to be from the northern part of the country who were stowed away in a Dangote truck were intercepted at the Umudike Junction of Aba Road, Umuahia, Wednesday, by operatives of the Traffic and Indiscipline Management Agency of Abia State, TIMAAS.

Vanguard gathered that TIMAAS operatives in the area received intelligence that a Dangote truck carrying the youths was approaching the area from the Akwa Ibom State axis of the border and mounted surveillance.

On sighting the truck, the officers flagged it down and inquired from the driver what he was carrying. The driver responded that the truck was empty but when the officials climbed the truck, they discovered over 40 northern youths lying on the floor of the enclosed cargo space of the truck and invited policemen to arrest them.
The truck and its human cargo were taken to the office of the State Commissioner of Police, Mrs Janet Agbede, who interrogated the driver and the stowaways and directed policemen to escort them back to Akwa Ibom end of the border from where they entered the State.

Speaking to journalists on the development, the Commissioner for Homeland Security, Prince Dan Okoli, warned that trucks carrying human cargoes to and through the state will be decisively dealt with in line with the directive from the federal government ban on interstate movement except those on essential duties.

He called on all neighbouring states to strengthen surveillance and enforcement of the restrictions on inter-state movements at their various borders to help control the spread of COVID-19 from state to state.

jayjaybazz:
When would we Abians rise to the occasion? This so called fly over was inaugurated weeks before Gov. Dave Umahi started the first fly over at Preco junction in Abakaliki that was in 2012. Now Umahi has constructed and infact commissioned not only that one but 4 more and has completed 3 new ones around other cities in Ebonyi waiting commissioning and many other fly overs yet at various stages of construction. In fact, what Ebonyi gov. has at his village has reached about the same stage as thisTable at Osisioma and someone wants us to congratulate Gov. IKPEAZU for building one fly over though out hos 8 years on office. Chai!!! Sorry for Us! True to it, Anyi ga EKPE AZU nah!
Making hasty conclusions about what you don't know is indeed unfortunate considering a supposedly lettered individual like you.

Asides Flyover construction around Abakaliki metropolis what else are you using to criticize Abia state vis-a-viz Ebonyi?

Aba is an INDUSTRIAL city, not an upcoming metropolis like Abakaliki. Its sustenance is beyond flyover constructions. Managing an industrial city transcends building flyovers. That is not to say the flyovers won't eventually be constructed.

The in- roads and expressways need revamping in such a way that it won't affect the business activities going on there. Where you have a beehive of activities, you also need an efficient waste management team. Do you think waste management for an industrial city is cheap? Ask Anambra, Lagos or Kaduna.

What about ease of doing business and capital inflow? Do you think it's easy sustaining these indices to keep Aba and Umuahia afloat?

Please abia governor needs to do more, but don't tell me nonsense about comparing aba to abakaliki because of flyover construction.

According to the recently released figures from National Bureau of Statistics, Anambra is the only state in the southeast with her poverty index within the 0-20% bracket. It has the least poverty index in the southeast.

Imo and Abia follows in the poverty index ranging within 21-40% bracket.

Enugu State surprisingly crashed and is above the 40% poverty index. Theirs is even inching towards 60%!

Ebonyi State Poverty remains the highest and one of the highest in Nigeria with an index inching towards 80%. This is disturbing.

Generally, our geo-political zone ranks third out of the six zones, tailing after South west and South south geopolitical zone.

PoliticsRe: 4 Reasons Why Aguiyi Ironsi Was The Best Military Head Of State Nigeria Ever Had by SonOfEl(m): 6:27pm On May 05, 2020
BluntTheApostle:
What do you want to analyze? The justification of the coup, or that it was necessary for Ironsi to accept leadership?

Always remember one thing, coup plotters or those who assassinate presidents always have their reasons, no matter how great the president was.

So, know that the military have always thought they were the hope, even when they had nothing to offer.

Ironsi was the GOC. As a gentleman, he should have known that the military had no place in politics. He suspended a bulk of the constitution, and ruled by decrees. He was no different from the dictators and tyrants that came after him.

Moreover, he was there for only 5 months. Who knows maybe he would have turned into a monster if he had more years.

After all, Gowon started off as a confused man who couldn't crush the aftermath of the countercoup. Igbo soldiers continued to get slaughtered even though Gowon ordered a stoppage to the madness. But after some months, he was able to gain control.
if Ironsi was a tyrant, he would have investigated the rumours he was receiving much earlier about an impending coup against his administration.

If he was a tyrant, he would have changed the sharing formula to his favor.

I think you just want to paint Ironsi with a monstrous hue despite having no facts for it.

You question the credibility of my source while at the same time trying to force your own source down my throat. Tell me, who wrote 12 Years of Military Rule so that I can question their own credibility too. Tit for tat!!!

Also, I will like to ask some questions?

If indeed Ironsi was not in the know about the coup, how then did he become head of state? Orizu was the acting president, why did Ironsi have to get involved? What concerned a military man with politics?

Again, there were claims that the coup was difficult to suppress, and so the acting president "voluntarily" handed over power to him. My question is: "If a GOC could not control his soldiers, what gave Orizu the assurance that he needed to first be the head of state to have such control? Why was he the GOC in the first place?

There were also claims that soldiers wanted Ironsi to take over.

How so? Which soldiers? Igbo soldiers? Itsekiri soldiers? Or Northern soldiers?
It's very simple to analyze.

Operation wetie in the west coupled to deep ethnic fracture among the political class brought distrust to the politicians.

The military believed they were the only hope at the time to truly unite the nation and Ironsi being the GOC took it upon himself to squash a coup and bring the boys under control while using a level head to restore calm and order to the political space

Because your destiny revolves around raping pre pubertal girls in the numerous baby factories scattered in the erosion ravaged and landlocked Alaibo doesn't mean that it is the way of life of others .

Apparently , you are the one with the single digit IQ with nothing meaningful to contribute .
Well, I wouldn't blame you because this is not gala and fanyogo hawking .

That said , this silly thread is a piece of shit only fit for flat headed ipob cum Aba made jews' consumption.

But before I take my leave , lemme burst some of the op's propaganda,

The remnants of the Balewa government were coerced by Ironsi to drop power not the nonsense the op typed .

The riot that greeted the unification decree promulgated by Ironsi in the North already made nonsense of the op's claim of Ironsi's pseudo federalism . The demonic unification decree was actually drafted by another greedy Ibo in the person of Prof Ben Nwabueze .

Honestly , I used to think Ojukwu was the greatest coward in the history of the world's military but Ironsi's cowardice made Ojukwu's pale into insignificance .

Ironsi as the head of state couldn't live in the millitary barrack but was living in a boat on the lagos lagoon. So much for a military General . cheesy

In any case , Ironsi was an usurper . He was made the GOC only because of the satanic NPC Fulani / Ibo NCNC alliance of the first republic . The British army commander actually recommended Ogundepo as the most suitable and most qualified candidate to lead the Nigerian Military .

Ironsi definitely had a prior knowledge of the January 1966 Ibo coup or ethnic cleansing .

Ademulegun a Yoruba man who was the 2IC in the Nigerian millitary was killed with his pregnant wife in that ill fated coup . Maimalari who was also the highest ranked Northerner in the millitary then was also killed .
But somehow , Ironsi escaped miraculously same way Azikwe and Micheal Okpara escaped unscathed.

Sardauna , Balewa and Akintola, Okotie Eboh were murdered in cold blood.

Ironsi then decided to pamper his kinsmen that perpetrated this crime against humanity by safely turking them away in some Eastern cells where they were purportedly treated like kings .

He further added salt to injury by promulgating the demonic Decree 34 .

Well , what goes around comes around . 6 months later , Ironsi had a re match with destiny and was also killed by the Northern avengers .
The Abokis didn't stop there but went further to lay waste to over 3 million Ibos .
The rest like they say is history .

PS:

Even the author of that unification decree is filled with regrets today .
Below is the author (Nwabueze) of the unification decree crying and staining Atiku with catarr and hot tears .
That singular decree subjugated the rest of the Nation under the Fulani hegemony till today .

The Hausa/Fulani are now the ones enjoying what the Ibos thought they would enjoy with that satanic decree.
Only if the short sighted Ibos knew!!!
What a beautiful lengthy piece of trash!

Even the coup plotters themselves confessed that Ironsi was penciled for assassination.

Your speculations and presumptions are as lame as they come.

Revisionism regardless of the semantics and half-truths you use won't help you. It only exposes your dubiousness. You can't change history.

Hear the likes of late nwafor orizu and balance your view

Obasanjo never participated in any coup as well. Abdulsalam Abubakar too.

Those politicians who survived the coup did not appear like they conceded power to Aguiyi Ironsi willingly. They were compelled to, and they did so out of fear.

In Chief Richard Akinjide's own words, they were threatened by Ironsi.

Ironsi told us that “you either hand over as gentlemen or you hand-over by force”.

There are no allegations against Muritala Mohammed as well.

You should know that Gowon abolished the regions to prevent secession. He didn't do so just for the sake of doing so. He did so because he felt that our federalism would be exploited by the likes of Ojukwu to break the country up.

Personally, I dont like military rule, but it is part of Nigerian history. Major General Aguiyi Ironsi was Nigeria's first military head of state. He was also arguably the best of the 8 Military heads of state Nigeria would eventually have. Ironsi was in office for just 6 months before Northern elements of the Nigerian Army staged a coup in which he was killed. Another military head of state who spent only 6 months in power before being killed in a coup was Murtala Mohammed. Murtala Mohammed has Landmarks, Airports, Highways named after him. He was even put on the N20 note. Yet Murtala Mohammed was a hundred times worse than Ironsi.

I think that Ironsi was the best Military head of state Nigeria ever had, for the following reasons

1) Unlike all other Military rulers in Nigeria, Ironsi never participated in any coup, either to bring himself or any other person to power

2) Ironsi is the only Military head of state who elected political leaders "willingly" handed over power to. The Nigerian Senate actually invited Ironsi to take over and handed over power directly to him.

3)Ironsi's Regime is the only Military regime that has no allegation of corruption to this day. Ironsi ran an austere regime and kept a close eye on the spendings of those he appointed. Ironsi was so frugal with money that the day before he was killed, while being hosted at Government house Ibadan by the Military Governor of the Western Region, Lt Colonel Fajuyi, Ironsi insisted that they only eat Sandwiches and dink water, as opposed to expensive champagne and banquet other Military leaders would later insist on.

4) Ironsi was the only Military head of state who maintained true federalism. Before Ironsi came to power, Nigeria was a federation of 4 Regions with each Region having resource control and fiscal responsibility of paying the Federal Government 25% of what each Region realised. This act of controlling resources and paying the Federal government an agreed percentage, as opposed to what we have now where governments controls resources and pays the states, is what made Nigeria Federal in nature. Ironsi made sure this proces continued. Other military governments, such as that of Gowon, abolished the 4 Regions, took away resource control, removed the fiscal policy and embarked on creating states, thereby destroying true federalism in Nigeria. The Decree 34 a lot of people like to talk about was just about unifying the structure of the civil service and that has nothing to do with true federalism.
My brother, learned men knew Ironsi was a true Soldier and Patriot. Forget the nonsense some people spew against him just to paint him bad.

Other tribes accuse him of masterminding the coup while history says he was actually penciled for assassination by the coup plotters. They accused him of being tribalistic.

Some of our Igbo kinsmen do the worst by attacking him for not surrounding himself with igbo-only intelligence and security.

History is gradually vindicating him.

Aba, the commercial nerve centre of Abia State, wears many aliases. Some call it Enyimba City (City of Elephants), others refer to it as Japan of Africa.

The city is dressed in such admirable robes because of the vibrancy and uncommon ability of artisans in the city to masterfully fabricate or put together anything under the sun, except human beings. This has made Aba stand poles apart from other commercial cities. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo acknowledged the prowess of Abia while on a working visit there not long ago.

Despite such challenges as infrastructural deficiency, particularly power and roads, Aba has refused to bow.
