Roland17: Nwanne, you make a good case if the team played cohesively and with a purpose that was sustainable. During the period we were 4th and 1 point behind City, we played atrocious football that lacked any identity, it was quite glaring that we could not even muster any offense and that has brought us to where we are now. If we were 4th and showed some promise on the field, that would make your argument agreeable but we were the opposite. We could barely string 3 offensive passes, we were blunt in the final 3rd with confused players and don’t get me started on then back 4. These issues were glaring last season and I was done with Emery by the end of last season because these issues did not just show up this season. Nwanne I totally agree with you. But when we come to judgement/evaluation its the Key Performance Index that matters. His KPI was first to be/finish 4th place. His team was playing badly no doubt, I called it grinding out results with hope things will improve. I guess those were the same thoughts the board had until recently. If a student KPI is to finish first in his class, his actual score though while important cannot be used as a measurement for evaluation as long as he took first position. |

Roland17: It does not negate the fact that the log standing at that time was not a true reflection of our team performances. True. But then we were 4th. You can't sack your manager if you are fourth and the season is just starting. |

BlueRayDick: I'm all in for that, provided he teaches them to shoot along with the passes. Me too really. We want to see beautiful football and get back to winning. Reintroduce zonal marking which I think is better, and allow players to shoot from a reseanable distance. |

BlueRayDick: I've always had the opinion that the useless Emery-ball nonesense must be flushed out of the boys' system for them to be great. I think Freddie is moving in the right direction. Even if that will be the only job he does before a permanent manager takes over, I'm okay with it. Ljunberg is reintroducing Wengerball no doubt. Quick two touch exchange heavily dependent on movement on and off the ball, with players forming little triangles. If Ramsey was still available he would have been captain/leader because he so much understands the tactics. Also expect the best from Ozil and Auba. |

Oasis007: I think the best Formation based on personnel available at the Club presently is 3 - 4 - 1 - 2 Formation. If I am the Manager of this unfortunate, hopeless Club, I will definitely try out the below Lineup;
_________________ Leno ________________
Chamber _______ Papa ___________ Luiz
Bellerin ___ Xhaka ___ Torreira ___ Tianey
_________________ Ozil ________________
_______ Pepe ____________ Auba __________
I will instruct Xhaka to sit deep, while Torreira will have the freedom to operate as a B2B Midfielder.
Defensively, Xhaka will be joining the back three and the WBs to making it 5 Defenders, while both Auba and Pepe will be ready for Counter at any given Opportunity. Asking Papa to man your centre defence is like asking Mia Khalifa to be your wife. #Akunakuna |

Jodera: In as much as 4-4-2 is sweet on paper, in reality, it really demands all round hard workers across the pitch and transition from defence to attack suppose to be fast. From the squad above, most of them just didn't fit in the formation. Firstly, the 2 forwards ought to be different but complementary. While auba and laca are different, they're not in any way complementary to each other. No one can beat defence with dribbling or pace, nor good with ball at the feet. So it'll be difficult to implement. Going to the midfield, like I opined, they need to be hard workers. Pepe hardly help in defence (tho he can be taught), and saka is just too young and raw to be thinking of first team. Also that midfield base is dead on arrival with Xhaka there. No destructive 4, which a 442 really needs. Guen also will need to be fast in his play, like I said, we need quick transition. Back 4 sorts itself out. But if he wanna insist on using it(like you suggested), I'll go for Leno Bellerin Luiz holding Tierney
Pepe Toreira ceballos (guen) martinelli
Auba laca
I believe with proper discipline, Toreira and ceballos can hold their own and both have long and short pass accuracy to launch and attack. Pepe can be worked on and given instructions to help defence, and martinelli I feel is an upgrade to saka sha. As for the front two, heaven help us. Lol.
In all honesty tho, I think we don't really have the personnel for such formation
Or we can use
Leno Bellerin. Luiz holding Tierney
Ceballos. Toreira guen. Martinelli
Pepe Auba In the first formation, Pepe as an inside right will not fit in to handle his defensive duties as he is left footed. I will take him paired with Auba as a support striker since he has the pace and skill to split a defence. That's in your second formation. Your point about Auba and Laca as not complementary is absolutely spot on. Ceballos cannot play the winger role. Where does Ozil fit in? ................. Auba ..... Ozil ................ Pepe . Ceballos/ . Torriera . Nelson Guen Tierney .... Luis .... Cham .. Bellerin ........................ Leno ....................... |

BlueRayDick: Xhaka cannot play the defensive midfield role (the viera kind) in the EPL. Maybe he plays well for his country, but he doesn't have that instinct to play it well for arsenal in the EPL.
Just look at Ndidi, Kante, McTonmay, Fabinho, Fernadinho(when he plays in the middle) and see how they play that role. (I don't know how to explain it). Now tell me in all honesty if u think Xhaka can learn how to move like those guys do, if he can shield the back 4 like they do and can he do all these without committing unnecessary fouls? I chose Xhaka just because he is available not the desirable. In a middle two, Xhaka should be the anchor not the destroyer. His primary duty would be to spread the ball and release runners. This I believe he can handle, he does same for country. What is important is the formation. Personnel can be acquired on needs basis. |
European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) › Re: Arsenal Fans Thread: The Red & White Army: 2025/2026 EPL Champions! by Spy360(m): 9:19am On Dec 03, 2019 |
BlueRayDick: This is a good formation sincerely. If only Xhaka would just be a defensive midfielder who will tackle to win the ball and not just be committing unnecessary fouls in delicate areas. He can be trained. I have seen Xhaka perform for country. He can be made to look good. Same goes to Guen. Others like Torriera, Willock, even AMN can then begin to fight to displace any of them. But the key thing is that there is an established pattern the club has decided to follow and every player should seek to adapt to it. |

Please Freddie, let's get back to basics. Let's go back to 4-4-2. I believe you have gathered the tricks and experience required to play the formation.

kokaneprodigy: Dude I didn’t see yesterday’s game and I can’t assess him under Ljungberg. But something happened differently yesterday Ljungberg had to pull him out at some point this conforms with what I’ve said that he doesn’t have the stamina to play for 90mins. That’s something Emery wouldn’t do.
Meanwhile this is a new manager with different approach everyone starts on a clean sheet and I usually give at least 3 matches before drawing assessments. But any body could get pulled out and for varied reasons ranging from fatigue, knock, tactics, and so on. For stamina I may agree because he is quite young to bear the responsibilities of our midfield. But that shouldnt diminish his performance at all. It is the managers call to spot a player that has lost stamina. So using his being subed as a point won't hold for me. Besides yesterday's game was one of his best outings of which Jodera testified. Until we get a decent midfielder and/or our senior players upgrade themselves, Guen remains our best midfielder so far this season. |

mostob: I think we do concede simply because our midfield offers no protection to the back four. This is because our MFs are ball playing and not destroyer type of DM. How about we try AMN in the DM position. 1. He has the physique, pace and height. Though he sometimes lose concentration.
2. He will concentrate mainly on defending thereby freeing other MFs to enable them carress the ball wella ...Lolz
The other alternative is David Luiz . His long passes will also come handy but I don't know why I don't trust the guy. Lack of protection, yes. But personnel is not our problem here. The problem is the team organisation. Our players lack the techniques in manning the midfield, and it is the fault of the manager. You don't necessarily need a destroy every time you play, you only need players who understand the roles and keep to it. Have you seen Ajax play? This is a team that is built on techniques and team understanding. |
