National Democratic Institute (NDI) and the International Republican Institute (IRI) sent a joint delegation to assess preparations for Ghana’s December 7, 2016 presidential and parliamentary elections.They also discussed threats and causes of violence militating against free and fair elections.

The delegation includes regional and election experts from North America and Africa, namely: Ambassador (retired) Johnnie Carson, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs and NDI board member; Mike Avwenayeri Igini, former Resident Electoral Commissioner for Nigeria’s Cross River and Edo States; Oby Ezekwesili, Senior Advisor, Africa Economic Development Policy Initiative; Gabrielle Bardall, Scholar and Democracy Assistance Specialist for the Trudeau Foundation; Christopher Fomunyoh, Senior Associate and Regional Director for Central and West Africa, NDI; and John Tomaszewski, Regional Director for Africa, IRI.

The purpose of the mission is to support Ghana's ability to deliver credible and peaceful elections in 2016. The delegation met with members of the Electoral Commission of Ghana, presidential candidates, political party leaders, members of parliament, civil society representatives and journalists, and will present its findings at a press conference in Accra on Friday, August 12.

The 3rd Oba Okunade Sijuwade Annual Leadership Lecture & Awards was held at Ife Business School.

Ife Business School, a Centre for developing entrepreneurs and corporate leaders combines the rich history and heritage of Ile-Ife with its learning and professional activities.

This year's Annual Leadership Lecture & Awards played host to eminent Nigerians and Monarchs; with Oba Adeyeye Enitan Babatunde Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, Ooni of Ife, as the Chief host and Royal Father of the Day.

Among the dignitaries that attended were: Chief Ernest Shonekan, Otunba Adekunle and Erelu Ojuolape Ojora, Chief Ayo Adebanjo (Afenifere Chieftain), Chief Oyekunle Alex-Duduyemi, among many others. Traditional Monarchs were also in attendance: Obi of Onitsha, HRH Nnaemeka Achebe, Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, Oniru Iruland , Lagos, Oba Elegushi of Ikateland, HRM Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi, to mention a few.

In his speech, Ooni of Ife, Oba Ogunwusi, Ojaja II reiterated the need to invest in youths and their development as Africa's future entrepreneurs and leaders.

The EFCC, on August 2, 2016 arrested a level six officer of the Accounts Department of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, Christy Olabode, for an alleged fraud to the tune of N100 million. Also arrested was her younger brother, Abdul-Shehu Obaze, a staff at the Commercial Department of FAAN in Ilorin, Kwara State, and Dominic Ojo, an IT officer at FAAN Headquarters, Lagos. Her arrest followed an anonymous petition, which indicated that she allegedly diverted the said sum, by inserting names of non-FAAN staff into its payroll. She allegedly conspired with Obaze, to perpetrate the fraud.

Obaze was found to have maintained not less than eight accounts in seven new generation banks, which were used to receive the funds for onward distribution to “several high ranking officers within the FAAN”. The funds were being paid into his various bank accounts with the narrative, “Furniture Allowance”. However, while allowance for FAAN's furniture is usually paid once in three years, Obaze received the “allowance” several times within a year.

Investigations carried out by the EFCC revealed that the fraud had gone on since 2013. It unearthed a payroll with names of many dead, retired and disengaged staff of FAAN listed against Obaze's different bank accounts. Upon interrogation, Obaze, a level nine officer, confessed that other FAAN officials were involved in the massive fraud, including Olabode's husband who works in the Human Resources department of FAAN. Olabode and Ojo currently enjoy administrative bail, while Obaze remains in EFCC custody. They would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded.

My Stomach Infrastructure Program is a Way of Life -Fayose

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Ayodele Fayose has described his Stomach Infrastructure Program as a way of life he is not ready to jettison anytime soon. He made this assertion while speaking with journalists after a special session with widows from across the state at Funmilayo Olayinka Women Development Centre, Fajuyi, Ado Ekiti on Tuesday.

Governor Fayose who promised to continue to do his best in making the widows happy assured them that he'll ensure their quota in the poverty alleviation scheme whereby #5,000 will be paid ten thousand beneficiaries is well protected.

"It's an ongoing thing, we didn't just start today, today's program is meant to alleviate the suffering of the people, to help them in keeping body and soul together, this is the one for the widows, we have done for people in some other sectors that needs to be supported.

"It's a way of life, we are doing it continuously and we'll not stop. The #5,000 monthly stipend we talked about, it's about our poverty alleviation package of #5,000 per person, though it cannot go round at a time, we will ensure we maximize the number of beneficiaries from the widow's category, we'll make sure they get the stipend, and on time too", the governor said.

Participants at the program went home with food items and some cash, they appreciated the government's kind gesture and urged the governor to make it a regular exercise.

Chief of Air Staff, Air Mshl Sadique Abubakar today held a meeting with Brig Gen Marker Camerer of US Air Force at HQ NAF for deliberation on the purchase of Super Tucano aircraft by the NAF.Other members of US delegation present at the meeting were Douglas Weaver and Col Patrick Doyle.

The CAS, Air Mshl Abubakar presented a copy of the NAF Airman Magazine to Brig Gen Mark Camerer, the Director of Plans, Programs and Analyses for HQ US Air Force in Europe and US Air Forces Africa at the meeting.

TROOPS THWART BOKO HARAM ATTEMPTED ATTACK ON YAURI VILLAGE

Today, Monday 1st August 2016, at about 8.00pm, troops of Operation LAFIYA DOLE accompanied by Civilian JTF successfully thwarted an attempt by Boko Haram terrorists on Yauri Community at the outskirts of Maiduguri city, Borno State.

In the encounter, the troops killed 5 of the attackers and recovered 2 AK-47 rifles, 1 General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG), one 60mm Mortar Tube, 1 Fabrique Nationale (FN) rifle, 2 Dane Guns, 2 AK-47 rifle magazines, 2 FN rifle magazines, 131 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition, 31 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunitions, a 60mm Bomb,10 Bicycles and the sum of N31,275.00 from the terrorists.

We are glad to inform the public that the general area is calm, while troops have deployed to maintain security in the village and environs.

Budget Padding Scandal: Pictures of Dogara’s guest house emerge

The pictures of what is said to be one of Speaker Yakubu Dogara’s guest houses emerged on Sunday, as the budget padding scandal rocking Nigeria’s House of Representatives worsens.

The pictures were sent to PREMIUM TIMES by lawmakers who asked not to be named. They said the pictures, depicted Mr. Dogara’s guest house located at Vistula Close, along Panama Crescent, in the exquisite Maitama neighbourhood in Abuja.

We initially thought the lawmakers were on an errand for the former chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation, Abdulmumin Jibrin, who has been fighting Mr. Dogara.

But the embattled lawmaker telephoned PREMIUM TIMES on Sunday night, saying he had nothing to do with the release of the photographs.

“I don’t have a hand in the release of those photographs,” Mr. Jibrin said. “I’m dealing with serious issues and not about guest houses.”

Mr. Jibrin had repeatedly said in his allegations that Mr. Dogara allegedly looted funds meant for legislative duties to furnish his guest houses and other apartments being personally used by him.
The charges were part of the similar ones Mr. Jibrin had come up with in recent days, following his ouster from the Appropriation Committee’s leadership on allegations that he betrayed the House leadership and other members.

Mr. Jibrin denied all the allegations, saying it was Mr. Dogara who had been sitting over massive misappropriation of public funds as Speaker.

“Mr. Speaker and Deputy Speaker Yusuf Lasun diverted millions of naira all in the name of paying for guest houses and official residence. The issue became so messy that the Deputy Speaker openly accused Hon Herma Hembe of short changing them of millions of naira in the deal to the shock of many honourable members,” Mr. Jibrin said in a July 25 statement.

Mr. Dogara and others named in the alleged fraud denied the allegations.
Mr. Jibrin’s whistleblowing had seen the public inundated with House internal documents about how funds were allegedly allocated to lawmakers for ‘constituency’ projects, triggering sweeping investigation into the scandal.
