Leaders of Umunachi Eziagbaogu in Ezinihitte Mbaise council area of Imo state have condemned in strong terms, the mob killing of a 20-year old school leaver, Princewill Oguike Onyeocha, who was burnt to death by a rampaging mob from a neighbouring community. Onyeocha who was washing his clothes, when he was dragged away from his father’s house to the village market square where he was set ablaze, becomes the fourth victim of the mob rage in Ezinihitte Mbaise within the last two weeks. The mob action was precipitated by an Ezeship tussle which led to the brutal killing of the driver to an Eze-elect in the tussle, one B.B. Ohanaga. MORE than a year after Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha signed into law the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Bill, a portion of the law sparked protest yesterday on the streets of Owerri, the state capital. Catholics, after a two-day Pro-life International Conference organised by the Archdiocese of Owerri demanded the portion that gives a woman right to medical abortion. The portion also pitted the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Prof. Tony Anwuka, against his boss who signed the bill into law on May 29. Anwuka, who represented the governor at the conference said he was expressing his personal feeling as a “knight of St. Mulumba of the Catholic Church” The SSG faulted the inclusion of Section 40 (1) (i), which allows “right to medical abortion” by women who need it in the state. Okorocha signed the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Bill into law on May 29 after the House of Assembly passed it and sent it to the executive for assent. The Imo State of Nigeria 2012 Law No 12, Section 40 (1) (i) states as follows: “Every woman shall have the right to enjoy reproductive rights, including right to medical abortion in cases of sexual assault, rape, incest and where the continued pregnancy endangers the life or physical, mental, psychological or emotional health of the mother.” But Anwuka condemned the inclusion...CONTINUE: http://crimefacts.org/okorocha-ssg-in-conflict-over-abortion-law/ |

As the National Publicity Secretary of the Action Congress of Nigeria, after about 53 years of independence, why do you think this country is like this, a country so blessed by God? I think it is conventional wisdom to blame it on leadership. The country has been unfortunate to have very good leaders at critical juncture of the journey to nationhood. I think to some extent that is quite correct. What makes a difference between a good nation and a failed nation is, most times, the absence of strong leaders. But these strong leaders by themselves are not enough. They also need to develop strong institutions. It is these institutions that they develop that would live after them and would carry the nation forward. There has been an absence of great leaders in Nigeria. Even the institutions that were left behind by the founding fathers have mostly been destroyed. I was not too young in the 60s, for instance. Then the system worked. The institutions then worked, and were respected by everybody. I always give an example of the common entrances to secondary schools in those days...CONTINUE: http://crimefacts.org/interview-jonathan-gambled-with-ngf-election-and-lost-woefully-lai-mohammed/ |

Owerri the Imo state capital was literally shut down for over three hours earlier today (Tuesday) following an anti-gay marriage protest by catholic faithful in the state. This, unfortunately is coming at a time when nearly half a dozen functionaries of the Imo state government are enmeshed in one gay scandal or the other, with the latest being the Imo Deputy Governor who was allegedly caught in the act by a woman who defiantly insists her claims are factual. The protesters numbering over 700 all drawn from Catholic churches within the Owerri Archdiocese wore mournful looks as they marched the streets of Owerri. The protesters led by the Archbishop of Owerri, Most Reverend Anthony Obinna, with over 50 catholic priests, laity, men, women, student groups and pro-life activists commenced their peaceful march from St. Mulumba Catholic Church at Wetheral road and terminated at Maria Assumpta Cathedral at Port Harcourt Road, Owerri. In an unprecedented move, the United States of America on Monday posted up to $23 million in rewards to help track down five leaders of militant groups accused of spreading terror in West Africa. The highest reward of $7 million is offered for the Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, who last week called on Islamists in Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iraq to join the bloody fight to create an Islamic state in Nigeria. Shekau has a subsisting N50m bounty on his head also by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The US State Department’s Rewards for Justice Program also targeted Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM), offering its first ever bounties for wanted militants in West Africa. Up to $5 million was posted for Al-Qaeda veteran Mokhtar Belmokhtar, the one-eyed Islamist behind the devastating attack on an Algerian gas plant in January in which 37 foreigners, including three Americans, were killed. When the military was accused (rather prematurely ) of destroying the town of Baga in Borno State, the opposition in Nigeria went into over drive. They gave all kinds of figures of houses that were destroyed and blamed every destruction on the Nigerian military even though it was an established fact that the militant sect, Jama-’a Ahl al-sunnah li-da’wa wa al-jiha-d, commonly referred to as Boko Haram, were the ones that used rocket propelled grenades which have incendiary capacity and could destroy buildings. Of all the voices that condemned the government and the military, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd)’s voice stood out. Forebodings were voiced Wednesday, May 29, by senior Israeli military officers in the face of the widening military intervention in the Syria civil war by Russia, Iran, Hizballah and latterly Iraq too. They have made Syria’s civil war the platform for a Russian contest against the West and a ladder up which Iran and its proxy Hizballah are climbing to top Middle East regional power spot. Russia, Iran and Hizballah are winning the contest by default against an unresisting US-led West and a hesitant Israel. A senior IDF officer acknowledged on Wednesday, May 29, that Israel’s government and military leaders are at a loss on how to proceed. They have yet to recover from the calamitous miscalculation that Bashar Assad’s days were numbered to which they clung stubbornly for almost eighteen months. Even today, some spokesmen refer to a “disintegrating Syria,” thereby losing sight of the major strategic and military changes overtaking the country that are entirely to Israel’s detriment as well as eroding its options against a nuclear Iran. At a time that the US and Israel should be using their heaviest military guns to slow Iran’s race for a nuclear bomb, Tehran with Moscow’s backing has brought its military assets up close to Israel’s borders in Syria and Lebanon and openly threatens to use them. Unlike Syria and Iran, Israel can’t count on military intervention against an aggressor by supportive big powers. .Net Resource Transfers out of Africa Range from US$597 Billion to US$1.4 Trillion from 1980 through 2009 A new joint report by the African Development Bank (AfDB) and Global Financial Integrity (GFI), launched Wednesday at the 48th AfDB Annual Meetings in Marrakech, Morocco, reveals that the African continent has been a long-term net creditor to the rest of the world. The report finds that Africa suffered between US$597 billion and US$1.4 trillion in net outflows between 1980 and 2009 after adjusting net recorded transfers for illicit financial outflows. “The resource drain from Africa over the last 30 years—almost equivalent to Africa’s current GDP—is holding back Africa’s lift-off,” said Prof. Mthuli Ncube, Chief Economist and Vice-President of the African Development Bank. “The traditional thinking has always been that the West is pouring money into Africa through foreign aid and other private sector flows, without receiving much in return. For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth; It was said unto her, the elder shall serve the younger. Romans 9:11-12. It is common knowledge that history always repeats itself. What is of concern though is whether we learn from history. With the brouhaha surrounding the recent NGF election and the Amaechi versus Jonathan imbroglio, I would wish to draw any ones attention who cares to note that there is an election by grace. And in this election, the best candidate is not always chosen. President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan may not be your quintessential leader; he may not be charismatic enough but he has grace going for him. And I’ve been in this world and country long enough to know that no one fights grace and succeeds. To fight grace is to fight God. To fight grace is to tell God that his choice was not smart enough. To fight grace is to tell God he was dumb in his assessment and judgement. The Nigeria Governors Forum is dead. A very noble idea, copied from the United States, has been sacrificed, on the altar of Nigeria’s peculiar brand of cheap and petty politics, governed by the mentality of ‘winning at all costs’, a politics that brooks no opposition to the president and that will stop at nothing to smash any opposition on the way. Governor Godswill Akpabio and his group of governors dealt the fatal blow on the 14 year-old forum on Friday night. Yesterday, it completed the embalming and buried it. To be sure, Akpabio and co. will certainly be remembered for a long time for this. The death of NGF was inevitable, judging by the chain of events leading to Friday’s re-election of Governor Rotimi Amaechi as the chairman. The political fate of the North is increasingly tied to the state of security in the region, and the more complicated the situation gets, the dicier the region’s 2015 political agenda appears. If insurgency festers and spreads, the situation may even become more challenging for those pushing for the return of the presidency to the region in 2015. In any region clouded by insurgency, especially one with international dimension, the voting population is mostly disoriented, families are largely dislocated and enthusiasm for election is always low. In many cases, residents of war-ravaged areas are likely to be interested in rebuilding their lives and reviving their ruined economies rather than doing anything else. He is disciplined: Those of us who were old enough, knew how we all fell in line under Buhari/Idiagbon’s War Against Indiscipline (WAI).
