Medic98: IELTS, hmmn... For the listening and reading sections, I didn't really have any problem with those from the start. I did some practice tests using Cambridge IELTS Students Book with Answers version 9 and 10 which I downloaded online. I tried to simulate exam conditions as much as possible by strictly timing myself, and I always scored band 8 and above from the first attempt, so those were not really problematic. The major challenge was writing cos I had no one to assess my write-ups. I watched some youtube ielts videos particularly Jessica Beck. I actually watched all (or almost all) of Jessica Becks free writing and speaking videos on youtube. I also completed the Road to IELTS from beginning to end. I then practiced writing and speaking by timing myself and answering some of the sample questions in the materials I had. I had about a month of preparation before the exam. I was working as well so preps was majorly after work. Some friends of mine used ieltsliz and ieltsbuddy in addition to Road to IELTS but I didn't use those. On the exam day, I was pretty confident, however, I had a little hitch in the listening section. I didn't hear the answer to a question in that section. That destabilized me a little and caused me to miss 2 or 3 more answers. I eventually caught up with the speaker and completed it. Despite the hitch, I felt I would make at least a 7.5 in listening. Luckily, I had 8.5. Reading was clean. No hitches. I also had an 8.5. Writing was a challenge, I barely finished. I wrote a lot, asked for extra sheet. I didn't have time to go over what I had written and correct any errors. Thank God I made it 'cos I couldn't imagine having to write that exam again. I scored 7.0 in writing. My speaking was scheduled for the same day on request because I had to travel a distance to get to the venue and I couldn't afford to make the trip twice. By the time it was time for speaking, I was drained. That exam isn't one I'd like to repeat honestly. It's really exhausting. Thankfully, I had 8.5 in speaking as well. My advice would be that you should try to assess yourself before your exam and know where you stand. You should have an idea of how well prepared you are. If you are not sure, let a friend honestly assess you, then you'd know whether you're ready to go for the exam or not. You may also consider signing up with one of the online or offline ielts tutorial courses if you have an area that gives you a lot of difficulty. You may also want to ask for advice from those that did theirs in Nigeria because some people say that marking is stricter here (I don't know how true this is). Hope I've helped a little. I wish you all the best. Cheers!
P.S: @basingstoke, you may have to work some more on your grammar cos I can see that you made the same grammatical error twice in your questions above. It should be ace not aced and use not used... no offense intended.. just trying to help. Cheers!! This is very inspiring. Thank you so much for sharing. I think I'm going to adopt your technique. This is really helpful. Wishing you all the best in your endeavors. |

practicalclass: Hello everyone. This post is to provide info for some1 out there. (N.B: it may contain lots of shorthand. Pardon me)
In re: to writing USMLE, its doable and achievable but you must be prepared. Things to plan 4:
- Deciding when to write (it's best to write STEP 1 while still in Med School say after doing Path& Pharm). Though dis depends on availability of funds
- To start with, you need to register for ECFMG certification with $75, Step 1 is $910+ Surcharge fee if testing outside USA. These fees usually increases like every 2 years.
- Strategize ur studies. D curriculum is SLIGHTLY different 4rm Africa's Med Edu. (You know they see some non-tropical diseases).
- First Aid text is a must have as well as Qbanks. As you study, revise with Qbanks. D NBME Qbank is a strategic tool (U can practice the current ones online for a certain amount...either 1month subs, 3 month, etc.
-You can take Step 1 or 2 non-sequentially but note that Step 1 is bulky (days why you need to plan ur time).
- Build ur confidence with mastering of >80% of the exam content. Its possible as long as u lay ur hands on the right materials.
- If you have the money, you can get the Kaplan videos (Kaplan just takes it time to explain in details the exam materials e.g explaining in details how pressure changes in heart using Frank-Sterling or blood flow following Fick's principle. So the Kaplan videos are lengthy.)
- Their is a visa type specific for Immigrant Drs as long as you get ECFMG certified after passing Step 1&2. I think their is a special VISA to come write Step 2 CS too.
- Registering for the exams is pretty straight forward especially if ur med school is recognised by ECFMG. Most accredited Federal govt schools are and maybe one or two private schools. Its available on the ECFMG website. If the school is not yet recognised by ECFMG but accredited, you can still register #dont knw d steps though
All the best. I know this is coming in late...but thank you so much for this. It's very informative. |

safarigirl: it was avoidable.
If someone rapes you in your house, that is not an avoidable situation. It is totally different from when you go for a FREE concert. You did not have to go for that concert, but you went, knowing that it could possibly be dangerous (anybody with common sense could figure this out), remember how Olamide's stadium concert flopped? Most people knew it would be unsafe to go. They had common sense
This has nothing to do with gender, I personally hate when girls make everything into a gender blackmail thing. You can say the men were wrong for raping them, that is common knowledge that has been established, but saying "this could have happened to anyone" is wrong, cuz I am sure many other girls did not go for that concert because they knew it would be risky
Besides, they said a similar thing happened when Phyno held a free concert in Enugu. If you cannot learn from the mistakes of others, the same calamity will eventually befall you.
This was an avoidable situation. Keep saying whatever you need to say to make yourself feel better. Keep juding and blaming the victim. My prayer is that you do not one day find out how wrong you are. Cos if you don't know that this can happen to anyone then I don't know what else to tell u. And the gender card isn't blackmail. It's simply the truth. Women are their fellow women's worst enemy. It's just crazy. |

I am a woman and I am not there but really sure that half of the girls on that concert will go on half naked. Pls our Nigerian Police look into all the women's dressing it causing men to go astray in the name of fashion. Thanks Please stop this talk. I'm sick of hearing it. Nobody rapes because of dressing. If u can rape a prostitute you can rape a Reverend Sister. Dressing is not the cause of rape. I don't know what makes us keep spreading this lie. Focus on condemning the act. Focus on catching the criminals. On another thread people were saying these rapes never occurred because there was no evidence. Nigeria doesn't care about rape victims, so, if you can avoid it, even better. This was an avoidable situation Somewhere in your mind u truly believe that u are a wise girl and so you cannot be raped. That's the source of most of our problems. You won't believe it but you are part of the problem. Men talk crap about dressing. Women talk about avoiding situations. Lemme tell u...even if they paid money for the concert it could still have happened. You can be raped inside your house in the afternoon with all your wisdom and good dressing. Do not make the mistake of thinking that you cannot be raped because you are wise and won't be outside at past 7pm in the evening. Don't assume that these girls put themselves in a dangerous situation. It could have happened to any of us. Sorry for being confrontational. It just pains me when girls turn on girls. |

Twitter is not going to get anybody justice, neither will Instagram, so coming online to make unverifiable accusations will not help any victims
And I am not dumb enough to go for some free concert at night. Some activities scream Danger, and people just walk into them. They should keep going for free concerts. Aunty it's like you need to be raped in your own home before you'll learn your lesson. It's not everything that you can use phone to record. Stop talking like a kid. Your society doesn't care. Some men here are already saying why should women go for free concert at night looking seductive. As if you shouldn't have the right to be safe in your own country. Rubbish talk. CastedDude: A Nigerian man has revealed how a married man has been disturbing him for hook-up with another lady. According to Ben Victor, the unnamed man always requested for a hook up with a lady who resides outside Nigeria after pretending he is single.
Victor disclosed that he got to know that the man is legally married after his wife who even didn't know what was happening - had a private chat with him (victor) on WhatsApp where she revealed that 'loneliness is killing her' despite living with her husband.
When the man was confronted for lying about being single, he said he's no longer interested in the marriage and that he wants to break out from the ''cage''.
Below is what Ben Victor shared online;
There is this young man that has been disturbing me for hook up for marriage. He won't request the usual hook up like others but will always insist he wants a lady residing outside Nigeria. But to my shock last night, I got to know that the lady that has been complaining to me about her husband is his wife. She was the lady we posted about last time who complained that loneliness is killing her.
She lives with the husband but it's as if she lives alone. Last night, she chatted me up with the same complaint and for the first time, I asked her the husband's Facebook name and she mentioned this same guy that has been disturbing me for hook up.
I chatted him up immediately and asked him why he is lying to me, he now said that his mind is no longer in the marriage. Meaning that he just want to get hooked up with a lady outside and run away, leaving her wife frustrated here.
If you were the wife and you get to know about this, what would you have done? And do you think I should let the innocent girl know about this?
Source; https://www.nationalhelm.co/2018/03/married-man-caught-while-looking-for-a-hook-up-as-his-lonely-wife-laments-details.html Well...thank God for the Ben Victor guy. At least he has a conscience. Most guys will hook the married guy up and call him a sharp guy. If more men were like this Ben Victor women would suffer less. Just imagine. You wanna have freedom inside marriage while refusing to set the lady free. Lol....useless people everywhere. |

Like somebody forced him to marry in the first place. all he can produce is lies. The woman that married him made a big mistake. It's a pity. Meanwhile somebody here is worried that private chats shouldn't be screen grabbed....hahahaha....why? So that evidence won't exist when you plan to break your own wedding vows? Please don't marry if you can't be faithful. Stop giving all this rubbish excuses about how women can stay for months without sex but men can't. It's not true. Women like sex too. gidgiddy: This is another extrer-judicial killing which some brainless Nigerians will celebrate.
Whenever a dead body is paraded with marks all over the body and items of clothing missing such as shirt and trouser, just realise that the suspect was captured alive, tortured and killed. After that, the only story you will hear is that of the authorities while the suspect is too dead to speak for themselves.
Many innocent people have been eliminated this way. Any of us could be innocently arrested by the Army, tortured, gunned down, and a gun put by our body. Even your own parents will believe you were a criminal when you were innocent.
People should learn to first look at the body of the suspect and ask why they have signs of torture and what happend to their cloths, instead of cheering the authorities like a zombie.
Extrer-judicial killing is a crime and it could easily happen to anyone! Very true. Cos putting a gun on somebody's body doesn't suddenly make the gun theirs. And I wonder why the guy is dressed like that. It's the same way they shot my classmate and dashed him a gun that didn't belong to him. Naija is an interesting place. |

I mean check it now, i'm sure u know looking like this is the kind of thing that will most probably attract whistling and hailing from lowlifes looking to get their attention, do u know some ladies will see this thinking its cool and go and do the same and get that kind of attention and then after will say that it is men that are disrespecting them- or is not so? especially in Nigeria where women use indecency to mask insecurity We'll have to agree to disagree. I don't judge people based on their dressing. I do not believe there is anything wrong with wearing a bikini. I don't believe being fat means you should hide your body in shame. I do agree that the dressing here isn't the most flattering. As for the arm....so what? You find her scar irritating? Or nasty? Would you feel differently if it was an amputated arm? Or a burn scar? Is the problem that she has a scar or that it's from tattoo removal? Or anyone with a scar should wear long sleeve to swim? You're right about indecent dressing being a way of hiding insecurities.... we're all insecure about something. But I don't think the ladies here are insecure. |
