Nairaland / General / Re: My Ordeal With "One Chance Fraudsters" This Morning by sugardaddy1(m): 4:19pm On Jul 26, 2012
OP, thank God for your life but you fall my hand for running after them just because of 100 naira.
I encountered them at Efurrun round about in 2001. It was around 5pm and I was heading towards Benin City. As I didn't want to waste any time waiting for the taxi loading at the park,I moved a bit away from the park and stood along the highway leading to Benin. In less than 2 mins, there was this private cab with a man at the front seat and another at the back. I entered and joined the man at the back seat. A few metres away, there was a fat man who flagged down the cab and was picked up as well. So, we became five in the vehicle with me sitting in the middle at the back seat. Immediately we passed the first police check point leading out of warri towards sapele, the driver started threatening to drop the young man I met in the cab earlier, saying his fare was short of 50 naira. I had paid my complete fare and as the argument became intense, I offered to pay the 50 naira on behalf of the man (which I did) and that calmed the situation. Thereafter, the driver pulled over abruptly, alighted from the vehicle and said we all should bring our bags so he puts them in the trunk of the car. But as mine was very light, I refused and told him I was okay having it on my laps. He then snatched that of the fat man sitting by the door without giving him any opportunity to say if he was okay with it at the back seat or not. He then made for the boot of the car only to raise an alarm that he saw some huge amount of money in some of the luggage belonging to the young man I had paid the N50 for earlier. Before I could react, the driver had jumped into the car, made a u-turn heading back into warri, theatening to take the young man to the nearest police station at the same time. As this was going on, I thought to myself, why did the driver suddenly make a u-turn without regards to my opinion? If actually there was money in the trunk of the car, all occupants of the car could be arrested and branded criminals or made to explain their involvement in whatever gave rise to the money, etc, etc. All these thoughts happened within 30 seconds and then, with all the strength and boldness in me, I shouted at the driver to "drop me here, now"!. Like magic, the driver pulled over instantly on the highway and I had to push the fat man, who was already looking hypnotized, before we could both get out of the car. The driver zoomed off with the speed of lightning and I quickly crossed over to the other side of the road where I was lucky to get another vehicle immediately, thanking God that all I lost was the fare I had already paid and the additional N50 I paid to help the young man earlier, thinking he was genuinely in need.
Nairaland / General / Re: Ever Used This Kind Of Pressing Iron? by sugardaddy1(m): 8:46am On Jul 26, 2012
I used it way back in the days and like most posters already mentioned here, those little charcoal droppings from the side vents ruined some of my clothes. But all the same, it's a very reliable piece of technology. Even though the device is getting outdated now, I think it should still be improved upon may be with the introduction of a side tray to receive those loose pieces of coals that always ruin clothes during ironing.
Travel / Re: Boarding A Plane For The First Time (Your Experience) by sugardaddy1(m): 5:49pm On Jul 25, 2012
It was in 2005 on a flight from PHC to Lagos. I was going on an official assignment and was booked to fly first class on Aero. As I boarded, there were about 5 pple already seated at the first class compartment -1 black and 4 whites, with others down the other compartments. So as not to show it was my first time, I simply showed my ticket to the air hostess by the entrance door who took me to seat 3A. I was carrying a travelling bag and having sat down and no knowing where to keep the bag, I simply pushed it under my seat as we used to do in molue buses wayback in Lagos those days. Thereafter, the air hostess who saw what happened came over and politely asked that I excuse her for a while. Of course, I obliged her with a smile , feeling cool with a neswpaper I had in my hand. Omon, na so she remove my travelling bag from under the seat come put am in the open compartment designated for that purpose above my seat. Chei! come see f.u.ck up! I no fit read newspaper again until we land for Lagos! grin

Now, this is the problem with us, Nigerians. Laws are made but not enforced and instead of putting the blame at the doors of the government and those they spend tax-payer's money on to ensure the laws are enforced, we blame and make mockery of the very few ones among us who still have the decency of mind to see something wrong and report. This is a major road no doubt, so where are those that are meant to enforce the use of crash-helmet laws? Where are the road safety officials who are meant to ensure people don't endanger their lives and those of other road users? It is an anomaly to have a motorcycle carrying another and whoever captures such scene whether from a bike molue, danfo, suv, aeroplane or a moving train for that matter, should be commended in the least and not be made a laughing stock simply because he described the circumstances sorrounding his capturing of the event.

Family / Re: Do I Have Hope To Get Married Again. Pls Help!!! by sugardaddy1(m): 6:00pm On Jul 20, 2012
You certainly will get married again, all you need is self-confidence.
I know of a tea-lady where I work who had two children earlier as a teenager and still had a colleague who later became an internationla staff marry her. But the lady in question was always cheerful and self-confident. She never joked with her looks and was neater than most of the single ladies around at that time. She related freely with everyone and never felt inferior to anyone to the point that when we eventually learnt she had two kids earlier, it was very shocking to most of us.
So, just have the right attitude and be yourslef. Natuarlly, things will fall in place.
Best of luck.
Family / Should A Married Woman Own Landed Property Without Her Husband's Knowledge? by sugardaddy1(m): 5:40pm On Jul 20, 2012
The other day, I overheard my wife's friend who is married trying to secure a piece of land without her husband's knowledge. Her argument was that her husband was not from same tribe as her and she suspects he might eventually divorce her and get another wife since she was yet to bear him a child. I had to cut into their gossip (quite unlike me) to advise that she shouldn't try such as I see it as totally against the principle of oneness in marriage, stressing further that her husband would feel totally betrayed if he eventually finds out. Of course, that was enough for her to brand me a bad person who is not sympathetic to her plight with my wife and mother-in-law, who was also privy to the discussion, sharing same view as hers.

Well, I usually don't give a damn what people think once I have aired my opinion on any issue so I ignored them, but not without giving a stern warning to my wife in the presence of all of them that the day I hear she contemplates such will be the day we will both tear our marrriage certificate(sic).

Each time I think about the issue, I always feel there may have been something they saw that I failed to see perhaps. And so I want opinions here if this act is right or wrong.

This kind of mob action is always very common among okada riders. Infact, it has emboldened most of them, knowing that their fellow okada riders are ready to mete out jungle justice on any driver, irrespective of who is at fault. Something similar happened around Trans-Amadi area in PHC some few years ago where some occupants of a vehicle were locked up in their car and set ablaze in broad day light by okada riders simply because they were involved in an accident with another okada man. It's been over 3 yrs now without Okada riders in PHC and the city is the happier for it.
