Wasiu said: “He ate his food after we left the bank and he told me he was going to use a toilet down there. That was all until I heard people shouting. He was still struggling to get out when I got there but he later went down inside the water.” Wasiu was promptly arrested by police officers attached to the Marine Police Division at whose backyard the incident took place. “He took off his jacket, wristwatch, wallet and made for the lagoon side. We were even telling him that is not the toilet, he insisted on going towards other direction. We called him again and he answered in Yoruba saying: Ani mo fe se gaa, meaning, “I want to defecate”. All of a sudden we just saw him in the lagoon. “I saw him dive into the water. We threw a floater and a tyre at him but he wouldn’t use them. Instead, he struggled to a deeper side of the river. “He was there still floating for about three minutes and luckily a flying boat was on sight. We waved at the boat to help rescue him at the point he was still floating but when the boat arrived, he swam and hid under the last pillar; Abaniwonda’s son, who rushed to the scene with some other siblings barely an hour after the incident, told National Mirror that there was nothing in his father’s mood or attitude to suggest he was not happy or was worried about anything. “My mother celebrated her birthday yesterday and he was there happy. We celebrated together with other family members. As much as i do not want to sound superstitious, I just keep thinking this is beyond the ordinary eyes. 1. If the guy owe money, he should at least have a fore-knowledge of it, hardly do people enter gbese over night but then his boy said no to this, previous to this day, they have enough money to do party and they are all in a joyous mood. 2. If the man is in a serious debt and probably conclude sucide is the way out, removing clothes in the middle of the road and jumping inside water appears the least sensible. There are 101 things he can do to himself and die in his house without drama or crude trauma to his family member. 3. Yoruba speakers will agree with me 'Ani mo fe se gaa' is not the kind of expression someone who has a degree and lived in lagos all his life will use to announce nature's call. Na inside abule (village) dem dey use the word gaa. It takes somebody really sick upstairs or somebody who dey under the spell of awon iya to end himslf this way. Finally, can somebody explain to me why the police arrested the driver? |

Her words: “I am disappointed in the marine police. They had their flying boat and swimming jackets in the station, why can’t they jump into the water and pull the man out? At least that is their duty; instead, they were throwing tyres and floaters like ordinary people. Things like this could never have happened in civilised country.” Abaniwonda’s son, who rushed to the scene with some other siblings barely an hour after the incident, told National Mirror that there was nothing in his father’s mood or attitude to suggest he was not happy or was worried about anything. “My mother celebrated her birthday yesterday and he was there happy. |
Just came across this article. Na frustartion or african juju we go call this or outright maddness? Ministerial nominee jumps into lagoon Font size: FRANCIS SUBERU, MURITALA AYINLA AND OLAJIDE OMOJOLOMOJU 19/07/2011 01:10:00 Lagosians watched in awe and consternation yesterday evening at the Leventis bus stop in Marina, Lagos, when a ministerial nominee, Mr. Al-Mustaim Alade Abaniwonda, aged 56, dived into the lagoon under mysterious circumstances about 3pm. He eventually drowned in the lagoon. Abaniwonda was the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Lagos East in the April 9, 2011 National Assembly election. According to Abaniwonda’s driver, simply identified as Wasiu, the senatorial candidate, who lost to the incumbent Senator Tunde Ashafa of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) and whose name was among the list of 10 nominees sent to President Goodluck Jonathan for consideration as minister from Lagos State, was coming from a bank on Lagos Island when he told the driver that he was pressed and would need to use the toilet. Wasiu added that all his entreaties and persuasions that his boss should wait until they get to his office, at the CSS Bookshop building in Broad Street, fell on deaf ears. He was not allowed to talk to people afterwards and when National Mirror attempted to talk to the DPO, he bluntly said he was not position to brief the press on the matter. Eyewitness account has it that when the politician jumped into the river, he was still able to stand upright but he deliberately walked into a deeper portion of the lagoon. A toilet operator, who does not want his name in print said: “We didn’t know what happened in the vehicle before he came down. But when he got to us, he told us he wanted to use our toilet. We were still looking for the key and water when he walked towards the river. We waved at the boat to help rescue him at the point he was still floating but when the boat arrived, he swam and hid under the last pillar; when the people saw that they went there.” Another eyewitness account said Abaniwonda slipped and fell into the lagoon while going to the toilet. But she confirmed that he obviously frustrated all attempts at rescuing him. She, however, blamed the marine police for their inability to rescue the drowned senatorial candidate, saying they didn’t do anything special to help him. We celebrated together with other family members. If he is still in the water up till now, and you told me it happened about an hour ago, then he must have died because he is diabetic. There is a limit to which his lungs would be able to hold him under water.” Abaniwonda drove in a Toyota Camry car with registration number MU 555 AAA while his son and other siblings who came in two jeeps one of which has the Federal Government registration number FG 527 A52, could not stop crying but were not willing to talk to the press. The Police Public Relations Officer, Lagos State Command, Mr. Jinadu Samuel, who spoke to National Mirror on phone, said he was not aware of the incident but promised to contact the Marine Divisional Police Officer to get adequate brief on the incident. The Epe-born politician, was a senatorial candidate for Lagos East under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) and the ACN before crossing over to the PDP in 2003 after he sought to contest the senatorial district’s ticket on ACN’s platform but was asked to step down for the eventual winner of the ticket, Hon. Olorunnibe Mamora, Abaniwonda holds a first degree from the University of Ife, (now Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife). He is the founder and managing partner of Alade Abaniwonda & Partners, an investment company, with offices at the CSS Bookshop building, Broad Street, Lagos. The question on the lips of sympathisers was: “What could have made a supposed millionaire leave his family and wealth to commit suicide by jumping into lagoon?” The answer to this question could only be answered by Abaniwionda himself. Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report, all efforts to retrieve his corpse from the lagoon have not yielded any positive result as all the searchers have retired for the day, with the intention to continue today. Speaking on the development, the Lagos State PDP Secretary, Mr. Olatunji Shelle, told National Mirror that he was yet to confirm the authenticity of the story, adding that he doesn’t believe that Abaniwonda for any reason could jump into the lagoon. He said that he was on his way to the police station where the complaint was lodge, adding that until he confirms the incident, he cannot make any comment. The state chairman of the PDP, Setonji Koshoedo in a telephone chat with National Mirror declined comment, saying: “I have no comment. The search is still on, but I cannot comment on that incident for now.” |
i repeatedly posted it on this site something like this should be expected. This is a bad news |
@Katsumoto will you be kind enough to continue with your discussion and stop dignifying these guys with your response or don't you think out of 717368 users of nairaland there would be some idiots?. I logged in on this site today so as read your factual writeups not to read you respond to some imbeciles who need their brain re-examined, it's beneath you my brother to respond to them. Abeg, continue from where you stopped, eh ehm, so the guy wants to acquire Abuja Commodity Exchange as part of his empire? |
@Katsumoto you have definitely made your point and further enforced my believe that Nigeria got it wrong in the person of sanusi as CBN governor. One evil that Yar'adua's administration has done us is sanusi. I only pray that generations of unborn Nigerians will not suffer for this. |
Thanks poster, i will start watching it |
Ilorin, Kwara State is quite neat |
I was a virgin when i got married, my wife was a virgin when i married her. When i think of sex, i think of my wife. There are many of us who still value African sense of morality. |
Let me repeat to you guys what I have said on a similar topic If Boko Haram is bent on beating fears into the very hearts of all Nigerians and their philosophical bases is that Western Education is Bad, How best can they send a better message than detonating bombs in the orientation camp?. Does NYSC not represent the climax of what they said is not good?, Is there adequate security measures in place when police headquarters was blown at their will?. Let me make it simple, only the living will collect NYSC certificate and if I were in your shoes, I will simply return the NYSC Certificate to their Secretariat and hope to be called up for a better posting in November. I don talk my own |
You arrested a man for speaking the truth the way he perceived it?. Nigeria don enter Hitlerism phase? |
Something, Somewhere is wrong |
Yah, dey would have been a distraction, just like if a lady was playing in the male team. But what is FIFAs problem sef? |
I will simply send back the callup letter to NYSC and expect a repost in November hopefully to a better a place. Ask yourself, If Boko Haram is really bent on striking terror into the hearts of Nigerians, wont NYSC orientation camp be a good ground?. Forget those muscle flexing Soliders O, When Kasala burst finish, dem sef go gbev o |
Youngman, use your sense |
@Gbawe, I find your arguments very sensible. It doesn't take one to have an MBA for him to know that whenever you are given a cause or project, the first thing you do is to take analysis of your resources both the tangible and intangible ones. Spending money without a full recourse to what you may have and may not have is the best way you can describe stupidity. Let the man take a full stock and let him publish it. That will be a base for us to measure him after 4 years. We should do away with illiterate sense of appreciation. When a Governor is spending on infrastructure, I don't start to sing his praise until I know important details like How much his he spending, From where his he getting the fund, What, blah blah blah, I even want to know the socio-economic impact of such spendings on the state. I only have God to thank that OGD did not get his much soughtafter 100Billion Naira, do you know what that will have done to the state financial position if equally recklessly spent?. In Summary, Taking stock is not an excuse or waste of time, It is Common Sense and what is done with such report is called Wisdom. |
Juju in Aso Rock, must i laugh anytime i dey nairaland? But come to think of it, most of these public office holders get jazz no be small o atleast I know of people like OGD and if anybody is doubting the efficacy of African Man tally, I know somewhere in Ijebu I can recommend. A day visit will clear such doubt |
You go fear beautiful girls nah |
You mean to tell me Yemen and Cameroun are better than us?. No, I beg to differ |
I am sick and tired of which region is who from discussion. History has shown that most politician at Federal level have very little impact on their constituency in terms of economic development. What we should focus on is Competency, Good stewardship and Accountability. The rest na small mata |
What a lost, rest in peace |
I beg to defer, Union Bank is changing faster than most you guyz realize. i have been banking with them for a while now and i must say their service keep getting better. for the worst bank however, I will vote Wema |

Since by marriage, you can now claim to be a Nigerian, i may not be out of order to wish you an happy children day in arrears. Mrs Yerima, i am one of those who really pitied your poor Dad's condition that led him to sell you out at such a tender age. I really pray God will bring you out of this bondage very soon. Try not to play too much today or your husband will get annoyed and stop buying you biscuit or baba-dudu. Have a lovely day and greet your darling husband for me. Sorry to ask this, i am just being curious , Has he start doing that thing your daddy and mummy use to do in cairo to you? Heaven help us. |

Insert Quote Quote from: Chris561 on April 26, 2010, 01:38 AM Education is so important. We Africans tend to wish to focus on money more than to educate ourselves about our history and existence as Africans. Majority of the African population carry the recessive gene for albinism, especially in NIGERIA. The only difference is that most people have not mated with their match ( meaning another person with recessive gene for albinism). So to walk around telling oneself that you are not albino nor is any member of your family albino is a self deceptive idea. Recessive trait for albinism is been carried around the entire African population, which means we are all carriers for the trait (I know the truth could be scary for some, but nature does what it wishes with or without our consent). The question becomes what is the true origin of albinism not can you marry an albino. People marry Aids, diseased and sick individual everyday. And they do so because they look like what society perceive to be physically acceptable. Albion individuals ( which l personally do not like to use the word albino, for is it the same branding as calling someone the N word) is the most intellectual, loyal, calm, spiritually evaluated person you can ever come across. Sadly enough everything most people are look for (love, respect, take-in care of, appreciation, acceptance, etc) in the so call normal looking person is a package in an albino. My personal perspective is that nature allow such variation to give us the time to think about ourselves in terms of our racism, resentment to something that does not fit into our liking, and also test our so call faith, believe in whatever GOD we look up. Thank You My Brother. God Bless You! I cant see the logic of your arguement in the light of the prevailing question |
@mama-gee, no i am not an albino and i don't have anything against the albino community more-also,i am a supporter of Martin Luther King Jr statement that a man should be judge by the content of his character not the color of his skin. seems most responses on this thread is offline. the question is a straight one, can you or not marry an albino?, if possible tell us why |
A friend recently shocked his entire family when he came home with his fiancee who happened to be an albino. Some of his family members including his mum instantly rejected the lady and even threatened to disown him should he go ahead to marry her. Personally, i feel you can marry anyone who pleases you. What is your take, can you marry an albino? |

A report that past Nigerian leaders stole more than $89.5 billion from the national purse over a period of 38 years, from 1970 through 2008, has cast a shadow on efforts by Acting President Goodluck Jonathan to attract fresh foreign investment, which is part of his agenda in Washington. Jonathan flew to the American capital on Sunday for the global nuclear security summit that began on Monday. According to the findings of international illicit financial outflow watchdog- Global Financial Integrity (GFI), Nigeria lost more money through illegal outflows than any country in the world during the period. The top five countries are Nigeria ($89.5 billion) Egypt ($70.5 billion), Algeria ($25.7 billion), Morocco ($25 billion), and South Africa ($24.9 billion). In total, Africa lost $854 billion in illegal financial outflows. The report paints a grim picture of the looting of resources and estimated that developing countries are losing as much as $1 trillion every year. “The amount of money that has been drained out of Africa – hundreds of billions decade after decade – is far in excess of the official development assistance going into African countries,” said GFI Director Raymond Baker. “Staunching this devastating outflow of much-needed capital is essential to achieving economic development and poverty alleviation goals in these countries. “Sub-Saharan African countries experienced the bulk of illicit financial outflows with the West and Central African region posting the largest outflow numbers.” The report said illegal financial outflows from the entire region outpaced official development assistance at a ratio of at least two to one. “This report breaks new ground in the fight to end global poverty with analyses and measurements of illicit financial outflows never before undertaken. “As long as these countries are losing massive amounts of money to illicit financial outflows, economic development and prosperity will remain elusive.” Baker recommended transparency in the global financial system as a solution to the problem. Back on the summit, President Barack Obama’s effort has started reaping early dividends as China has agreed to work with the United States on possible sanctions against Iran and Ukraine’s decision to rid itself of nuclear bomb-making materials. Obama said the risk of nuclear attack has increased, calling it a “cruel irony” after the end of the Cold War. He noted in his opening address to the first full day of the summit on Tuesday that the risks of nations going to war with nuclear weapons have decreased. Nevertheless, he told representatives from 47 countries that, “The risk of a nuclear attack has gone up.” Obama was speaking of the threat of terrorists getting their hands on nuclear materials. He had opened the summit on Monday night after two days of meetings with selected Presidents and Prime Ministers of the 47 countries assembled to recharge efforts to keep nuclear materials out of terrorist hands. China’s incremental move toward U.S. ambitions to sanction Iran and Ukraine’s plans to get rid of highly enriched uranium put some wind in Obama’s sails as he presses global leaders to join him in locking down all nuclear materials within four years. |
Room 101, KiriKiri Maximum Prison, Olodi Apapa, Lagos Dear Bode, Do not be surprised that I am writing this letter to you in your fist name. The last letter I wrote to you was when you were the Chairman of the Nigerian Ports Authority, and I addressed you as Chief, Commodore, Sir, All in All Olabode George. At that time I needed your help to help 'release' my goods somewhere. But now times have changed. You have lost the respect. Bode, am not surprised at your present predicament. You and I know you are a thief, but we both have been praying one day you will repent of your 'thiefing' ways. You and I know your stealing did not start at the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA). No. It has history. It started when you were at Ijebu-Ode Grammar School, 1960 -1964. You were stealing from other students, but everybody thought, by the time you were matured enough you will outgrow it. No. You were stealing gari, sugar, kuli kuli etc. On so many occasions you were reported to your seniors but they couldn’t do anything as you always share the gari and kuli kuli with them. You managed your way through the Royal Naval Engineering College without any suspension or expulsion. You were commissioned. And in your first posting, as Director of Weapons at the Naval Headquarters in 1987 you were adding a few extra naira and kobo to every contract/tender than graced your table. You went to the prestigeious Command and Staff College in Jaji and you cheated during examination and you are caught but used your high powered connection to excape the henious crime. You were not confident at all, then. Once you put the extra naira and kobo on contract and commit your various crime, I remember you always go back home praying hard so you won’t be detected. You were never caught. So gradually your confidence rose. And more so, as your boss at that time approved of your 'stealing' and shared some loots with you. It was this misfortune of your confidence that we were bestowed with in Ondo State in your first major military (political) assignment in 1987. You have now grown from the small boy that was stealing kuli kuli from fellow students to a care-less military administrator. And boy you stole the state blind. And even boasting that the 'Lagos Boy' had come to teach us 'ara oke' some lessons. Not only did you steal with 'no respect', you turned 'small girls' of Ikere College of Education to tin gods by your association with them. You only needed to send government cars to Ikere and all the girls will be falling over themselves to get into the cars to journey to Akure to 'please' you, By the time they come back to the campus they were ready to slap their provost, because they have tasted of your 'wealth and power'. The obedient people of Ondo State (of which Ekiti was part) could do nothing. Corruption was rife all over the country, so putting your hand in the state till was not at all surprising. But the scale you were doing this and with so much impunity was what enraged the people. We all kept quiet and pray that the omnipresent God will catch up with you one day, very soon. You were 'shooed' out of the Navy. And immediately you found a 'space' in the top hierarchy of PDP, when Abubakar midwifed democracy third time around. No thanks to the money you stole from our dear Ondo State that you threw around to impress the leaders of the party. All the rest is history. Bode, you got the post of chairman of NPA, not on merit, but compensation for your effort in ensuring your party's good showing in OODUA states. But God knew in His infinite Wisdom that the NPA job will be your final undoing because He knows how greedy you are. And greed leads to destruction. You did not disappoint anybody on the scale of your greed. You handpicked your collaborators and you started your stealing spree. Sold most of NPA properties and inflated contracts. And with all these you were still going about collecting 'dues' from your party governors in Ekiti, Oyo, Ogun, Ondo and Osun States. You have no shame, at all. You became the toast of all ladies in the Lagos and Abuja social circuits. Your 'hat' became a symbol of riches, affluence and power, But God was only distinguishing you for a big shame that He wanted to bring on you. Because in you He saw an individual who had no love of his fellowmen at heart. A man with so much appetite for stealing. Bode, you are a disgrace to your family, wives, ex-girlfriends, and children. You are not a disgrace to your colleagues in your party or other parties. You are one out of many of them who are draining our country dry. You are one of the big guns who parade our cities, oppressing the common men, with the money they stole. There are so many like you in all the facets of the Nigerian polity, economy etc. But it is said in our adage, eniti ile mo ba ni ole (it is the one that is caught that is a thief). How many of our so called leaders can account for their wealth? How many of them have not dipped their hands in the public till? So many have abused their offices, stole billions and turned themselves to political gods. But we still celebrate them. Very soon, if they do not come before Justice Oyewole, they are all answerable to God Almighty. Bode, I know you are very happy at the judgement of Justice Oyewole. I saw a smile on your face when he delivered the judgement. A mere 30 months and you are back at your old self. You are lucky. You remember the sentences handed over to the Ambrose Alis, Mbakwes, Barkin Zuwos etc in the 80s. Some had 100 years for stealing just a fraction of what you stole. But Bode, see beyond the number of years and ask for atonement of all your sins. Your children, wives and relations will carry your shame all their years. You are more like Oyenusi of the old. Nobody, to my knowledge, bears that name anymore. Your children are lucky, yours is an English name. But from now henceforth, people will ask them, which of the Georges are you? The shameless thief or the other George? I shall end this here, as I am beginning to realise you are hard to convince. In all these, you still nurture the thoughts that you were set up because you are a top notch of PDP? Ah! You are a dunce. And above all an OGBOLOGBO OLE. Ole, Wobia, Alajeju, Agba Iya. I pray God will forgive you, for what you indirectly made to happen to my goods (and other struggling Nigerians') at NPA some years back. See you after 30 months. Greet all the Ogbologbos in Kirikiri. F Falana __._,_.___ |
