The British were the most powerful military in the world in 1897 when they invaded Benin. They invaded everywhere they wanted, including India and China. Being military weaker than an invader doesn't mean you are not civilised. You're just militarily weaker.

By the way the British burned down Benin city and bombed it to smithereens, and there are only one or two houses existing there today that were there before the invasion, and they are tourist sites today.

^^^ Benin Ciy had multi-storeyed buildings as early as the 1500s, and so it shouldn't be a surprise that they had them in 1846, 51 years before the colonial invasion.

The Benin Empire was a very sophisticated civilization.

Do you know they exchanged ambassadors with Portugal in 1504?

The Benin ambassador lived in Lisbon, Portugal in opulent settings, liaising with the Portuguese aristocracy and king, just like his Portuguese counterpart was doing in Benin.

When his tenure ended, he was replaced by a new ambassador, just as we do today!

I'm certain this happened with other nations Benin traded with, even in Africa, not just Portugal.

They might even have sent ambassadors to Igboland and to the north. Even to the Ghana and Mali Empires, and the Kongo empire of central Africa, and possibly all the way south to the Zulus.

The Benin empire prospered for a thousand years, until 1897 when the British finally overran it.

Somehow, they want to believe we were nothing before they came to "save" us. I don't want to say much but when the time comes, our ancestors will get the respect they deserve; instead of being portrayed negatively.

There can now be a landing point for governance system (division into original units, regional, amendment of constitution for equal rights etc.) As for me, I'll go with the division for several reasons.

You can't fight colonialists or their systems without visiting the foundation of what they did to you and carefully undo their hands and reset the system. But when you believe you will weather and sweat it out using the alien system, you will continually fail, it's no magic! Continue to do it like this nah and call the pseudo country one Nigeria, before your very eyes, another 63 years will roll away

If the foundation was good, Nigeria wouldn't have failed in just 6 years of its establishment! 1960 - 66, and since then, it has been merry go round of stagnation.

A neighbour bringing home a chick for the night can lead to poor man bringing 3 dirty skanks for the next 3 days. The worst is you having anything they don't have. Poor people can compete against a 5KVA generator with an I Pass My Neighbour or their hire purchase Keke Marwa against a 4Runner jeep. When poor people can no longer compete they resort to gossip to try and destroy the reputation of the person they lost to.

Colonial borders represent a very big problem in Africa. Larger tribes put together fight each other and oppress smaller tribes constantly as well as having conflicting traditions and interests. The only successful African country since it's independence is Botswana which is a fairly homogeneous society. Until Africa redraws it's borders along tribal/ ethic lines, nothing will progress as there is no peace and harmony. Imagine Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Austria, Luxembourg and Liechtenstein being in one country or France, Spain , and Portugal in one country; it's going to be chaos upon chaos. Yugoslavia fought civil wars throughout it's existence before disintegration. Look at Asia, the likes of Japan, Korea, china, Thailand are all fairly homogeneous societies.
