Covert1: Most western sales come with strings attached. An example is the Pakistani F-16s used in a defensive role against india whilst JF-17s takes the aggressor role. The JF-17s now form the backbone of the Pakistan Air Force. The Indian Mig21 was shot down by a AIM-120C fired from a F-16 -( i dont know what YOU mean by "aggressor role" in this context). Core of the PAF is still their F-16 fleet which is the most capable platform in their inventory, while the Jf17s are gradually replacing the MIrage III/5 and F7. No country with enough financially resources would even think of buying a Chinese aircraft made in Pakistan. For a number of reasons we are unfortunately forced to do so. Therefor we should keep our expectations as realistic as possible and put on a brave face waiting for better days to come for the NAF to touch the sky with glory. |

Covert1: I was going to say something about the ASELPOD but refrained from doing so like I do mostly so that they take the bait. People who barely know think they know something so wait for them to copy and paste online content before exposing they are no professionals.
You can imagine someone here full of himself all the time and his ilk liking ignorance all over telling us SA has something we know isn't true.
About the French Rafale the manufacturer makes us believe it is built with materials that gives it near stealth capabilities. It remains to be seen in combat where projections on paper can quickly go awry against a very capable foe. Talking about the IRST i clearly said that the IRST is not integrated on the air frame. We fly the Block II version of the JF17, a budget fighter jet for 25m per air-frame. This is anything but a descent amount of money in todays world where even a MIg35 starts at 50m but this is exactly what we need now. We see certainly not a Gen 4.5 aircraft here and note that even the PAF doesnt fly the Block III. Even the Block III is not remotely comparable to the Rafale - this platform is complete different league. Dream on dreamer. |

Covert1: I'm sorry the NAF JF-17 has those features you mentioned. You can find the info right here. I can not see anything that indicates a IRST is integrated on the air frame. ?? |
Foreign Affairs › Re: African Militaries/ Security Services Strictly Photos Only And Videos Thread by SuperSixSeven: 7:41pm On May 24, 2021 |
Covert1: The NAF JF-17 is a 4.5 Generation Jet with current specifications bar AESA Radar the only publicly known feature to be incorporated. Non of the featured specifications classify the JF-17 Block II as a Gen 4.5 Fighter Jet. There is much more to the Block III than just an AESA like IRST (which would be visible on the airframe if installed), Helmet mounted Display, EWAR suite.. and many more features. We certainly see the basic Block II here, which represents a Gen 4 combat aircraft - while the Block III is still under testing and development for the PAF. |

Covert1: Congratulations NAF @57 and induction today of the new JF-17 Thunder state of the art 4.5 generation multi-role fighter jet and God bless our true friend, brother and strategic ally in Pakistan. If Pakistan should ever stand in need Nigeria as a nation must stand ready to help. I have considerable doubts about the gen 4.5 claim. It remains to be seen how this Chinese aircraft made in Pakistan is going to perform, keep in mind the F7 was disaster for the NAF. Unfortunately, there is not much user feedback from JF17 export customers available. At least we got a platform that was designed with the intend to be a multi-role fighter with a broad range of state of the art Chinese weapon systems integrated. It can, therefore, be said that the NAF has achieved some progress in becoming a more capable Air Force. As mentioned in an online article elsewhere the small number of aircraft inducted will certainly come with the price of low availability rate until more platforms will join the service. |

ocelot2006: The last pic with the Major in a vest is a clear example of what's wrong with Nigeria. Billions have been released in the name of purchasing equipment, yet the Officer has not simple holster to tuck his service pistol in. I'm no fan of Senator Ndume, but he was absolutely right about one thing: our poorer neighbours have far better kit for the soldiers and security personnel. Our politicians claim to love our troops, but I see no reason why in the 21st century our basic infantry man is still armed by the OBJ006, a Nigerian copy of the Chinese Type 56, one of the 5 WORST copies of the AK47, according to Kalashnikov THEMSELVES! Even if we adopted the design, why still use wooden furniture when there are better composite materials. Plus no optics, nothing.
Abeg I'm tired. Those rifles the NA i equipped with are Bulgarian AK47s |

Then we have the 707sf.. these guys aren't joking around, we ve seen em participate in international exercise... We have a unbelievable number of SF battalions stamped out of nothing in just a short time. SF is always about quality not quantity. |

The only feasible solution i see in this current situation would be to build a Commando Force as the spear tip of the NA - a force that really earns it special forces status modeled similar to the Afghan Army Commandos. This takes years and a significant investment in training and equipment but anyway we cannot except this war to end soon. For training and mission planning we would of course need foreign assistance from western allies and even financial support to acquire state of the equipment. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Afghan_National_Army_Commando_Corps |

iblawi: At the end of the day the size of the ship will determine the compliments of weapons that the ship can carry and that would still directly / indirectly determine the tonnage. Todays maximum warship armament is more about available deck space rather than tonnage. The south african MEKO200s sports16VLS and 8 ASM while 3700t and 121m. (needless to say the SA MEKOs are underutilized). In contrast to the israeli Saar6 corvette has 72VLS, 16ASM on a 1900t and 90m platform. We can see even a compact ship can deliver substantial firepower if properly armed. Frigates like the Sigma 10513 of the Marocco Navy should be considered with 105m and 2300t representing the best Light Frigates currently available. |
Foreign Affairs › Re: Battle Field Discussion (picture/video) Of African Military . by SuperSixSeven: 9:26pm On Apr 22, 2021 |
iblawi: Yes. Mostly the tonnage of frigate in regular navies range from 2000 - 4500 tonnes but in most NATO navies a frigate will range from 4500 - 7000 tonnes. Nowadays some countries in europe go by the number of VLS launchers. 16-24 Launchers Corvette, >24-48 Launchers Frigate, >48-72 Launchers Destroyers. I am sure the NN will a light frigate in the 2500-3000tons range. |

We can never get the F-35, and we will not purchase the SU-57.
