As the dust settles on the financial crisis which brought banks to their knees, the banks appear to be emerging stronger from the debris of huge non-performing loans (NPLs), as they post impressive financial results with some of them actually paying dividend and giving out bonus shares to existing shareholders. Based on the release of financials by the banks, the stock market reacted yesterday, gaining 1.75 percent. The All Share Index closed at 24,555 points. Specifically, GTBank was the highest gainer in the banking sub-sector adding 0.95 kobo to close at N19.95 kobo. Access Bank also rose to N8.99 kobo after gaining 0.42 kobo. Zenith Bank gained 0.73 kobo to close at N15.43 kobo. Beating analysts’ expectations, the three banks that released their full year financial results for the uniform period ended December 2010 all recorded impressive pre-tax profits, ranging from 42 percent to 564.46 percent. Although earnings dropped in all three banks, Zenith Bank recorded a 42 percent increase in its profit before tax from N35.9 billion in 2009 to N50.03 billion in 2010. GTBank’s earnings rose by 73.28 percent from N27.96 billion in 2009 to N48.46 billion in 2010, and Access Bank’s went up by 564.46 percent from a loss of N3.48 billion in 2009 to a profit before tax of N16.17 billion in 2010. The banks recorded impressive growth in their pre-tax profits, even as growth in loans and advances, one of the core businesses of banks, was marginal. Loans and advances by Zenith Bank only grew by 2.14 percent from N698.33 billion in 2009 to N713.29 billion in 2010. GTBank’s loan portfolio went up by 5.34 percent from N563.49 billion in 2009 to N593.56 billion in 2010, while that of Access Bank went up by 11.99 percent from N383.78 billion in 2009 to N429.78 billion in 2010. Wale Abe, chief executive officer of the Financial Market Dealers Association of Nigeria (FMDA) who spoke with BusinessDay in a telephone interview, said what is happening sign-posts better things to come. According to him, when the financial institutions are strong, it is good for the economy because banks, anywhere in the world, are the drivers of the economy. Concerning the fall in the banks’ gross earnings, Abe said earnings have reduced because the volume of business banks do has reduced. He further went on to explain that the volume of business has fallen because the level of inefficiency has also reduced drastically because all loopholes have been blocked. Bolaji Balogun, managing director of Chapel Hill , simply said it’s a “stellar performance”. Victor Ndukauba, an analyst with Afrinvest who spoke with BusinessDay, said: “The spike in both pre-and post-tax earnings (which were 10.0 percent below and 1.0 percent above our forecasts, respectively) was pretty much in line with their expectations”. Ndukuaba said Access Bank has been able to achieve decent growth in gross earnings (6.0 percent below our 2010 full year forecasts) based on its singular drive to sustain a circa 10.0 percent growth in credit, albeit with enhanced focus on only top-notch borrowers and, by extension, asset quality. This was pretty much against the run of play, given the general decline in risk asset creation by Nigerian banks in 2010. Adesoji Solanke, an analyst with RenCap Group, said he sees the logic in Nigerian banks finalising their balance sheet cleansing in the aftermath of the crisis, with the full financial year 2010 results, as this would place the banks on a clean pedestal going into 2011, and effectively put paid to the days of provisioning surprises. Abiola Rasaq, an analyst with Vetiva Capital Management Limited, said that these banks’ financials are good numbers; adding that the market will continue to react positively to these results. Access Bank is the only bank among the three that witnessed growth in gross earnings. Its earnings went up 7.25 percent from N84.98 billion in 2009 to N91.14 billion in 2010, while Zenith Bank’s earnings fell 30.58 percent from N277.3 billion in 2009 to N192.49 billion in 2010, and GTBank’s earnings fell 5.32 percent from N162.55 billion in 2009 to N153.91 billion in 2010. Zenith Bank is proposing a dividend of 85 kobo per share, while GTBank is paying a dividend of 75 kobo per share and a bonus of one share for every four shares held by shareholders of the bank. Access Bank is paying 30 kobo per share to its shareholders. In spite of the peculiar environment in which the banks operated during the period under review, all three banks witnessed growth in deposits. a lot has been said about GTB Long queues. i have asked one of their staff before and he gave me the analysis.a banking business like any other business is about profitability and in terms of efficiency of resources they are still the most efficient within the industry, churning out profitability that can compare favourably with FBN with over 800branches and over a 100yrs of experience. He also told me that the bank is positioning itself for the future by making every individual through the efficient e-channels such as internet banking and gtmobile.sincerely if majority of customers can embrace this echannels that i have found to be very efficient,we will assist them to decongest their banking hall and it also makes banking easier for us. I have been a GTB customer for a while and i bank with other banks too, i still doff my hat for their technology esp the echannels.instead of going all the way to the bank to check ur balance or request for your chequebook or all those mundane transactions, all this can be done from the comfort of our offices and homes, thank God internet penetration is better than before. if we are comparing Nigerians bank with citibank, barclays bank etc, these are technologies nigerian customers need to buy into before we start complaining as if we are more efficient than these guys at our duty post. sincerely they need to increase their branch network but if the business model of making every individual their branch works, they will FBN soonest. their echannels is very popular among Nigerians in Diaspora. |
my man of the year is Sanusi Lamido Sanusi SLS the Governor of Central Bank for his reform in the banking sector and for not standing up to those looters called legislators, who is your own? |
oyinlola's convoy just came into the state capital, live and direct |

where is that stupid dude called duduspace alwayz going ard spewing thrash, instead of spending his tym to pray for his babies to win he was buzy whinning about man utd, can u see the difference between contenders and pretenders, laffing all the way |
this thread clearly shows that alot of nigerians in diaspora are not in tune with what is happening in the country. the youths are taking their destinies in their hands and charting their course.nigeria is still backward and barbaric but the improvements are strolling in gradually. we have the 2nd largest economy in africa and we should overtake SA by 2013 (with statistical facts), SA companies are running to Nigeria, Asian companies are making Nigeria their biz hub in Africa, their is major reform going on in the power sector, Nigerians are dominating virtually all the economies of the sub-saharan Africa. I strongly believe by the time the reform in the power sector is completed, the economy is going to witness an unprecendented boom cos it will significantly lower the cost os starting a biz in Nigeria. If u are happy with wherever you are in the world, enjoy the fun but that does not give a license to anybody to start misyarning about issues it clearly shows they are not in tune with. Mind you like what someone said, we the citizens produce our electricity, even people in Ajegule have I-pass-My-Neighbour, we produce our potable water either through borehole or a well, for security you have OPC and Vigilantes. The only thing the citizens cannot do for themselves is probably highway roads cos alot of communities are even doing the access roads themselves. For education, from primary to universities you have good private and public schools to attend, for the health sector, you have good hospitals to go to depending on your level of affluence and that is what is obtainable worldwide too Sincerely I wanted OBJ to do another term so that his reform on the economy could be total, the former ailing presider Late Yar Adua messed up everything but GED is trying to set it right again. Whether you are in Jalingo or Calabr or Toronto or Boston or bueno aires or prague, and you have the blood of 9ja running in your blood, you should be concerned about how you can contribute your quota of improving the country like Okonjo Iweala, Ajumogbia and the current Min. of Finance who are all nigerians in diaspora. You should not glory in looking down at NIN as if you are better off even if you are. |
9ja is not as bad as u guys are trying to make it look. yes there are almajiris but have u forgotten that they have a muslim cleric compd they will all go back to sleep at nyt. Our problems are there but they always heavily magnified by the western media. I quite agree with buzugee, the rich man in 9ja can decide to shop at palms go to silverbird gallleria etc the poor man has a close substitute, by shopping at mama tawas outside the houz kiosk or yaba or oshodi, he can also rent VCDs @ NGN50 to watch films. You shd realise that the western media has always and will always keep portraying africa(not only nigeria) in bad lyt to stiffle investment flow into the continent. In conclusion, we all make choices in life and we should always stand by them. If u chose to leave the 9ja and make other countries your home its your choice and make God help u but it is not a license to talk down on the people back home. |
Is the name NAIJA not bringing more patriotism to the country that the name nigeria and the youths are identifying more with the true nigerian spirit and imbibing the ideologies of patriotism and dedication. the woman should not rubbish her good works by dealing in petty issues when there are more 1million and 1 state issues to be attended to. she should also realise that she is not a commissioner of information in one obscured state and she can lean on the back of her chair and be giving myopic opinion on issues she has not done research on, I beg jare, NAIJA FOR LIFE and NAIJA TILL I KPAI, Next tym she go tolk say mo we no dey speak pidgin again, lol |
who the hell is this laughing stock called ritchboi, the only club on earth a person like u could be supporting is definately arsenal, end of discusssion |
I knew it will come down to name calling, we vs them mentality of NIN and NID. Nationalities of other countries see themselves as part and parcel of their countries wherever they they are in the world but we always want everyone to believe we took the best decision by stepping out of naija into the greener pastures of wherever we are. Stepping out of the country is your decision and goodluck, I do not belief anyone should be condescending on the people that chose to stay in their motherland. Respect their decisions too, mosquitoes or not, corruption or not, underdeveloped or not, every country has its own societal challenges and it is high time we get down to the posters question and stop thie we vs them non-progressive mentality. |
for those of refering to 9ja as having the lowest GDP or woteva economic nonsense u call it, it just shows that you do not know how the nigerian economy work, ask them at World bank, they do not understand either. How will they factor in Okada riders income, pepper sellers income, groundnut sellers income, danfo drivers and conductors etc into GDP. That is why despite their prophesy of doom, 9ja keeps waxing stronger. We are simply being beefed as a result of being the best in what we do---whether good or bad---- that is the nigerian spirit for you. if u want to steal, steal just ensure u know the rules that can exonerate u from stealing, if u want to be a bookwarm ensure u strive to become a nobel laureate or a professor. We do not owe any body any apology for being who we are-----we are dominating the fashion world, education, entertainment world etc in africa, and those haters still keep wondering how Naijas are doing even in the midst of their contrary challenges---we see opportunities where others see challenges, we see a way where others see no road sign, we even make a way where there seems to be no way, we see the light at the end of the tunnel when others see total darkness How many of these african contries from Egypt down to Lesotho, from Gambia down to eritrea (apart from SA) can boast of more than 3 cities where u can have internet access, relative light, what looks like tarred road and potable water (borehole the least) and they will come to Naija and see Lagos, Abuja, Kano,Kaduna, PH, Calabar, Sokoto and even places like Akure, Enugu, Osogbo, etc and you can still hjave reasoinale live in these places. . Yes we are bad and capital YES we are good---love us for it or die early hating us, We are simply proud of our country,,,PROUDLY NAIJA JARE!!!!!!!!!! |
@ LadyT Be very careful. Cant u pass your comment without insulting? i am cultured enough for me to respect your gender that is why i wil not bother insulting you back. But if you are really upto the game of insulting, lemme know and bring it on. Once again BE WARNED. |
All of you defending this louis guy should better be thankful to God that he can only try it with Nigeria or maybe other African countries, If he is such a very good investigative journalist or james bond 007 ot woteva u call him, he should find his way to North korea or Iran or Torah borah Mountain of Afganistan, that is when i will believe he is indeed the sp called investigative jack bauer journalist you are all claiming he is. What did he show that was new, we know we have a problem, do we need him to rub it in our face. It is fools like him dat makes this whiteheads to always treat us with disdain attimes. keep defending the guy as if he is your brother or your kinsman, the truth is spend 500years in UK or US, you are black and you are very black men, the result of his stupid documentary willl rub off on you except u fail to show ur green passport. |
@ Parki/Xterrra2, I need to thank u guyz for ur objective and not the brain washed view of some, |
get what i am saying, there will always be issues in every country, Why has US not reached a state of Utopia, simply because no society can be perfect. Learn something from the Chinese, they shaped their present and future from their past without allowing anyone to dictate to them.We africans should learn something from that, and shape our future and it is not when someone calls us devil, barbaric and we should be nodding our heads in agreement like Agama Lizard, We have issues to resolve.yes. It is no more news. It is the British press support for a change that we need not their negativism and junk journalism. That is the point. |
@ ElRazur See down there and let them keep bombarding your mind with the image of you are not as good as them, na u sabi. If i like i can even use the Queen's crown to browse, they stole and plundered our land, they took our forefathers as slaves to their land, let them use their brain to develop things, baba God will give us money in 9ja to buy it, I still stand on my point they are simply assoles, |
We should all get something right, it is high time we stop this stupid whites to define what is good and what is bad, They are worse off in every area you want to look at. We are not disputing it, 9ja might not be the best place to live (no more a news) but definately it is not a Mogadishu,Kabul,Baghadad and even the notorious parts of London or New York. This is what China refused the western media to do to them and whether they like it or not China is a worldpower. we were colonised in the 18th century we should not allow it to continue far deep into the 21st century, Yes we have a problem, we are not disputing but trying to celebrate and make it look as if they are better off is an abberration, are they not corrupt, dont they have ghettos, I beg BBC and CNN should keep themselves busy by focusing on the impact of the recession on their citizenry and the stupid wars they arewasting their resources to fight all over the world, Proudly 9ja |
this issue is overflogged now. but let us analyze the young lady's action together: 1. She is known in school as a xtian, maybe spirit filled, demon chasing or tongue blowiing xtian. She is a law student and either stays in Queens,Idia,Awo or St. Annes Hostels 2. She dressed up as a muslim in her room and walked all the way from her hall to the mosque without coming across her roommates, classmate and friendz that will ask such a spiry-girl why was she dressing like a muslim, I stand to believe that the girl maybe metally sick, it might not be to the extent of the one on the road, we have different grades of mental sickness, if she is not sick then she was possessed by demons she probably sent packing from someone and that wanted to lead her to her early grave in annoyance or she has a muslim background which can be xplained for her dangerous brazen but stupid act. Be that as it may, I strongly believe the muslims have a long way in changing the general opinion of the religion as a true religion of peace, this is quite evident in the postings on this thread. They have to condemn the few, if they are indeed few, muslims that are violecnce, terrorism inclinegd They should also condemn the IImams that spread the hate message and violence message. If this is done more, it will show all that it is actually the few ones that are potraying the image of the religion in bad light. When this happen i can now believe like Nigeria dat it is a few that carry hard drugs or involved in 419 and other crimes that are spoiling the larger majority . I stand to be corrected,if God isthe Almighty One then He does not need anyone to wage a crusade or jihad war on His behalf, He does not need our Help in anyway. Any God dat relies on me to fight for me should as well give me a title of a god then.I rest my case. |
@ all,]] I called the number and he sent the catalog b4 sending the mail to the email address before d=sending the catalog, i thiink he is pretty busy, he has very lovely laptop skin, arsenal, man utd, chelsea, madrid and barca inclusive |
@ Jaaiz Tech the last time i checked what looks like what Nigeria still calls constitution, Nigeria is still not an atheist state, therefore there is still freedom of expression of faith inclusive of Uni of Ibadan, if I preach inside the bus and the bus conductor did not ask me to either keep quiet or get off his bus, i can as well continue, who cares? , but you have a freedom to express your faith in a school but it should not be provocative like the stupid girl, who complains when you march round the school during your Jihad week shouting allahu Akbar, I have said times without number that i cannot worship or embrace a Deity or god that cannot fight for Himself, that means He cannot save me when I am in trouble, I can as well become a god if He has to rely on me to fight for Him, Over and Out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
@ Sagamite you are a fanatical e-fundamentalist, LOL ssee the way th guy is begging u!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
@ Le Stylo I am a graduate of Uni of Ibadan, When i was in 100L at FLT, the xtians usually come ard to preach every morn but instead of muslim to come ard and either preach or do woteva dat looks like preaching, they ganged and barricaded the lecture stand one morn and said there shd be no more preaching in class, it nearly degenerated into fiasco if not for the intervention of back seating boiz like me that said we the ifa, oshun and ogun bopiz want to use the stage, before they all finally came to an agreement, get it straight, the muslim world shd know that we are no more in the days of Ottoman empire or The Great Salawudeen where violence and war reign supreme, what it is baffling is the way the muslim in a university environment reacted to the uncalled for provocation or act of insanity of the girl, the question what is teh difference btw their reaction and that of northern alamjiris, that shows the religion has a fundamental aggressive (dont let me use the world violence) nature embeded in it. see, what the girl did is totally and absolutely wrong but the muslim too shd brace up and denounce the reactions of maybe few fanatics demonstrating over a little girl and calling for jihad, Lest i forget, i was told the girl has a muslim background, dunno how far that is true sha ooo |
The Arabs shipped Islam to Africa The Europeans exported Xtianity to Africa Let us al embrace our Ifa,ogun, shango, obatal et al, and all these religous crisis nonsense will come to an abrupt end: LOL, just on a lighter mood |
Why are people always running to nairaland to complain of any experience they have with the service industry , if it is not banks, it is airlines, we should endeavour to contact the organisations to lodge our complaints 1st before coming to nairaland to spew rubbish. and the worst part off it is most of the people that run to to nairaland as their saviours are not better off at their own workplace. It is high time seun stop moving all this nonsense complaint thread to front page, this will definately stop the way people come around to complain of this bank, that bank, this airline, that airline, why can't you complain of PHCN? spare me jare!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |
what the lady did was bad in all ramifications but some zealots carrying placards because of her act of insanity and asking for her head calls for questioning of their reasoning faculties too. What the girl did was an act of sacrilege but the muslim community should have been more matured in a learned and intelluctual environment, what do they expect the almajiris in the north to have done in this case? what i know is that who are we mere mortal men to fight on behalf of God? if God is really God, He will fight for Himself, if i can create the world, firmament, everything , fighting for himself is the least thing that is difficult for Him to do, He destroyed Sodom n Gomorrah without F16s, stealth Bombers and all that, this is a very dangerous dimension for religion in this country, if radicalism, extremism and terrorism is being brood on our campus, this will definately consumate this country. we keep preaching religion, our political leaders are from the different faiths and they keep looting our treasury witout our pastors or imams expunging them from the church or mosque, who is decieving who, GOD IS GOD>, NO MORTAL MAN CAN FIGHT FOR HIM Recommendation: 1. The girl should be taken tpo a pyschiatric hospital and probably expelled. 2. the students that lynched her should be identified and punished accordingly to serve as detterrant against jungle justice. |
Super Chickens will never score such a goal, coz no one wil ever follow up, |
