second of all. if he's friends with them before you met him, why hasn't he slept with them yet. if he was going to sleep with them, he would have done it by then. if he wanted to be with them, and it was possible, wouldn't he have done so?

thirdly, most of my girlfriends now i only have platonic feelings for. the ones i have deeper feelings for, it's mostly only because i'm single and i think they'd be a good catch.

1. I saw a lot of its against the law to smack your child in this thread, but I guarantee you, discipline is alive and well. You have to put your foot down. As my aunt (who lives in Dallas) says. 2. At least abroad there is machinery in place to protect children. Age restrictions etc. Nollywood has long since had age restrictions but a young person can buy a film marked 18 from the vendors. You can't buy alcohol, cigarettes or pornography until you're 18 or 21 in US/UK but go to Ikoyi Club or something and see if they card anybody (maybe they do now) or go to a department store and see if anyone will stop you. Same thing with cigs from the mallam. When I was 12-14, I bought/rented porn from various places- only one person ever called me up on it. If the cashier has morals they may let it go, but its likely they may not. I don't know where the idea that young people abroad club all the time, you only hear about it when something goes wrong. this does not mean it does not occur, but for all the people that do it, there are people who don't have fake ID or whatever and cant get in. compare this to the 15 and 16 year old types in Naija who spent every monday in my SS2 and 3 talking about this and that happened in the club.

3. We Nigerians can be quite funny at times. Ex. the legislators freaking out over BBA calling it immoral when they are robbing the people they swore to serve in the very next order of business. In the eyes of God, sex is not worse than stealing no matter what you tell yourself. American kids for instance have a higher level of integrity with regards schoolwork. Not to say people don't cheat, but they keep it on the d/l. they don't openly boast about having 'crunch' before an exam. But that's ok. He doesn't drink or smoke.

4. there's a lot more, but it's late. bottom line though, as other people have said, it is in the hands of the parents. No matter where you are. You have to be there for your child from the start, throughout the formative years, and through adolescence, especially then. The people whose parents always came to school regularly tended to do better than those who didnt. As has been said on this thread, Naija parents tend to be very busy abroad but its like they forget they weren't busy in Naija? They need to shape up, because there's no excuse for parents who have degrees to have children who don't want to go to uni. If parents don't work at being role models for their kids, they'll get it elsewhere.

5. one last point, so what if they can't speak their native tongue. i see no positive/negative to this.

shell will never clean up to a respectable standard if the regulation is weak. why should they?

their job is to make money not care about people. the only reason they seem to care about people is that it looks good hence why the budget for community relations is probably neglible compared to other items. it doesnt cost anything to organise the shell cup tournament or that scholarship thing they had for ND indigenes a while back but it does cost them loads to cleanups.

I applied on the 10th of September for a student visa (supposed to start on the 22nd well induction week anyway).  Nothing has changed on the website tracker beyond your app was fwded to the BHC on sep 10, and I've been calling for almost a week now- but I keep being told its not ready. Is there someone I can talk to?  The lady gave me a number but no one seems to pick up, she gave me another one today so I'll try that first thing tmr.  

My mum is suggesting I go to the VAC. would that help?

egregious bilge. no one i know has ever had to undergo a test for a simple tourist visa. i've never had to get one, and i've done the tourist, student and tourist thing again. green cards are different as you are actually going to emigrate there. do you know that means? i don't think you do. a green card does not give you leave to go there and sit on your arse, its actually a work permit/permanent residence document. ergo you are going there to work. if you are going to be very sick in a few years, please explain to me why in the name of all that is holy will the US allow you into their country, when you will only be a strain on their economy and healthcare. or do you think its a fucking charity?

what i am trying to say, and what you seem to be closing your eyes to is that the channels you use as an example and aim to emulate had backing from some of the biggest companies in the world. what do YOU have beyond a dream? cartoon network would never have failed due to the fact that before they even suggested the idea at a TimeWarner board meeting they would have had a long term business plan, and even if they had problems breaking even in the early days the parent company would have been there to prop them up.

i read this thread and i do not see any facts to back up your idea beyond the fact that its a nice idea.

it used to take six months for one episode of the simpsons to be created, did you know that? and that is hardly the height of animation. to produce 1 season of 22 episodes of the simpsons, it would take multiple teams. where are you going to find the manpower. do you have it in place?

now take DSTv, which has been castigated for oppressing the common man, blah blah blah blah. they charge 9000 a month, but can we agree that you are getting more bang for your buck? DSTv has at least twice as many channels as HiTv, so at the very least the costs average to the same amount or close the same amout per channel. now i've seen it said that HITv is for soccer lovers, but soccer is not the only sport in the world. what if i wanted to watch the rugby world cup. what if i wanted to watch tennis, did hitv carry the usopen? will hitv carry the olympics next year? am i really going to shell out 4000 naira for only soccer coverage? at least on SS3 when they start to show for example liverpool and reading or ajax cape town and supersport united for the 100th time or so that week, you can switch to something else, watch a movie, a documentary, a music video or hell another sport. can viewers of hitv really honestly say that they are getting value for money?

@kobojunkie/lafem and others while it's nice to dream, i don't think you have any idea about cartoon network. you mention cartoon network having their own OPs (original properties) like the Powerpuff Girls, Ed Edd n Eddy etc. but do you know how long it took for them to get these going? cartoon network had been running for years before they even launched dexter's lab or the powerpuff girls.

do you remember the early days when CN used to finish at 6 or 7 and then switch to TNT now TCM? CN is successful now, but really, it was part of TimeWarner, they could afford to be unsuccessful for a bit. the overheads were relatively low, as TimeWarner already owned the library of cartoons. CN was basically a venture for them to air these old cartoons instead of letting them gather dust. for years, this was how it was, then little by little they started phasing in original programming. You mention Disney, which in itself if a multinational company. Even if they didn't have a dedicated channel, they had ABC, which is a major network in America to air their shows at first. when they saw it was viable, that was when they created the Disney Channel. you mentioned all these cartoon channels. but you forget that they are all part of big multinationals, media powerhouses. they had the financial backing. and im not talking about raising funds from banks or whatever it is you plan to do. im talking about massive financial imput, and then deals with major companies or properties like Mattel, PlayStation, XBox, Tyco, Hasbro etc which bring in ad revenue.

are you going to do similar deals in nigeria? what would be the benefit of PlayStation advertising in Nigeria when a game there costs the equivalent of 3 games abroad? children in the west have some form of purchasing power. their parents might give them an allowance, or they may work for it. you can imagine a kid working after school at mcdonalds or target, having enough money after a while to buy these products, or even younger kids babysitting or mowing lawns or cleaning houses or selling lemonade here. is there something like that in nigeria, ? you think the kids selling on the street are selling so they can buy God of War 2? or you think if a nigerian secondary school kid works in mr. biggs he will be able to afford a game sold in nigeria after a month. obviously, you'd have to use local companies for your revenue in which case, what concerns a 10 year old kid with dangote spaghetti. is he the one doing the shopping?

i think its an interesting idea. but there is really no such thing as an independent specialist channel. they all have massive financial backing from some of the biggest companies in the world. you could try and partner with HiTV or DSTv i suppose.

its good to know that people are still loyal, although lets face it, even with all the shit going on at chelsea, its still a lot better than supporting derby country or something.  if anyone supports the little teams, they have my respect, for real.
