Sorry for the late reply. KAUST is a good school, and so very competitive to get in. If you apply there, you will be competing for spots with guys from Cambridge, Harvard, Cornell and the likes. So you want to get the best you can get in the GRE and write a really good SOP. Create an impression on the reviewer that you are really interested in their research areas and you do associate with their core values. You will be fine.
Regarding GRE materials, I only used Barrons, that's all. You can also get one too. But I think you may have to do more than that since the testing format changed recently. Good luck bro.

Hey Guys,

Yes i trolled through all 37 pages of this thread lol. grin

Quick question(s), I did all my schooling in UK that is GCSE -> ALEVELS -> UNDERGRAD.

This GPA is kind of confusing is this the same at ALEVELS or UNDERGRAD , i got 320 ucas points (a-levels) and first class in BSc Economics (undergrad) what GPA am i?

Also everyone on this thread are into engineering lol, i'm planning to do my masters in finance in the states, however i wanted to know on average ow long does it take to revise/prepare for this GRE, i plan to take it in November but i read some people took 2-4 months for preparations :O i don't have four months, do you think i should postpone my GRE its just that most deadlines are in January and I intend to begin my masters in fall 2012.

Many schools will fix the fall 2012 application deadlines for December (top schools) or January 2012. If you intend to start your program by fall next year, it means you have very little time. I'm not sure if Finance people are required to take GRE, I think it's GMAT. Whatever it is, you need to figure out how much time you will need to prepare yourself. Get prep materials and evaluate yourself. I'd suggest you don't rush your applications though; good applications need a lot of effort and time input.

I am new in the house, pls i need your help, i am planing on going to india for process control & instrumentation courses, but don't really know the best training institute for that. I have googled it, but keep seeing so many. im actually confused. Any helping nigerian with knowlegde of indian training institutes should pls assist me. & is it a wise idea, going to india for such courses?.
Thank you all,
If what you mean is an advanced degree (say MSc), then I'd recommend the IITs (Indian Institute of Techs). These schools are highly prestigious, even more than some US schools (by objective standards). Also, be aware that nobody competes with Indians when it comes to computational applications such as control and automation. However I think you should also bear in mind what opportunities might be available after graduation.

EducationRe: General Question On Graduate Studies In Us, Uk Or Canada by tabarity: 1:26pm On Apr 21, 2011
The rule of thumb is that you start the process approximately 18months before your desired enrollment date. That means that if you want to start with your graduate programme by Sept 2012, you should begin now. You will have to prepare hard to take the GRE. Your best bet is to TRASH the thing to give yourself an edge for fellowships. You will also have to improve on your GPA. Admissions (esp in the US and Canada where there are better post-graduation job opportunities) are progressively getting tougher and more competitive every year.
So take the GRE and TOEFL, get your transcripts, get good recommendations (that can take longer than you might anticipate), write great admission essays and apply early (for fall 2012, I'd suggest applying latest by December 2011). However, I would advise that you concentrate on improving your GPA for now (this is your only chance).
Hope it helps.

Hello Guys,

Just got admission into the Uni of Houston for Summer session, Still waiting on the rest.

Called TAMU, they said they havent made a decision on my case, but a lot of applicants have already been denied, so I am still hoping for something good.
Congratulations on your admission. But which one is summer session?grin Just curious. Do you have to enroll by June when the summer semester starts? Do you pay for that?
As regards TAMU, they've made the first round of offers and all accepted applicants must have accepted or declined last week. So, hopefully you should get a decision this week or (unfailingly) next week.
Goodluck!

some schools can be very lenient with that, and just let you get off, but if they know that you are going off to another school it gets tricky. That's because they know you essentially played them. It's better to get off as soon as possible to prevent too much problem. Before accepting the second offer, why did you not sort yourself out with the other school?
Hey flo_path1, what do you think might be the consequences if the school gets to know that the person in question in planning to go to another school. Perhaps you want to share the story of a similar recent case you were aware of and what the end result was. I have a friend already in a graduate programme in the US already but intends to leave to another programme in another school in the US. He's even secured an admission. He once said he feels so bad that he might have to suddenly announce to his research supervisor that he is leaving. He is also skeptical about what might be the reaction of the school that has thus far supported him financially (tuition and stipend).
EducationRe: Preparing for GRE by tabarity: 3:03am On Mar 24, 2011
Could we say JHU and UPenn are more prestigious and thus more competitive than MIT and Stanford in engineering? Obviously NO! It's just money matters. But these decisions are absolutely unbelievable for such a profile.

MS programs in private schools like Stanford are simply not for the poor/average. They are designed primarily to rake in money to supplement research funds in a little way. A few promising admitted MS guys do receive support (especially if some prof recognize they might be of great benefit to their research group). Seriously cezeozue, I wonder why Stanford and Wisconsin are not offering you some substantial financial aid, with your profile - it beats my imagination.
As for me, two admits so far: Delft and TAMU, both for MS petroleum, no funds yet. I really need prayers guys.
EducationRe: Preparing for GRE by tabarity: 5:06pm On Mar 22, 2011
^^ No mind them jo. PennState (as well as most public schools in Pennsylvania) is broke. They couldn't accept you simply because they don't have the funds available (I guess). AFAIK, PA schools recently experience a huge budget cut on education by the state gov't.
Again, you have the best already (MIT, Stanford). These are very prestigious schools o. Any news on funding yet?

It's okay man. Ivies are only good for sciences but not so great for Engineering. You've got the best in your palms man, so this should be a blessing in my opinion (it reduces the degree of freedom of alternatives you will be considering when making your final decision). wink wink
EducationRe: Preparing for GRE by tabarity: 3:26am On Mar 01, 2011
^^Yes, you are right. But the point is there much better funding opportunities in the US than in the UK (at the Masters level). Imperial, RGU, Aberdeen and HWU are all great schools to study petroleum. A good degree form any of them will stand shoulder to shoulder in the industry with some of the best from the US.
However, while it is possible to get your degree free of charge from the US, it is very very uncommon to get a masters degree from the UK without pouring out your savings or going through PTDF/ESSO etc.

Guys, I need your urgent advice. As you are well aware, I got the MIST for a masters in mechanical engineering with FULL funding and more.
I also got TTU, masters in petroleum engineering as well with a $1000 scholarship and a in-state tuition grant.
Congratulations man. Regarding which one to choose, I think you should go with your mind. The truth is that we can only offer you some words of advice, but you don't have to go with any. It's all about you, your life and what your heart desires are.

magnamos:
Okay, let me state what I actually have as my master plan,

I'd go to MIST for the Masters in Mechanical Engineering, they are giving a reasonable stipend so I reckon I can save up some good amount I can use to further my studies in the US for a masters  in Petroleum Engineering.
Furthermore, MIST (although I don't know the extent of this information) stated on their website that they are in collaboration with University of Texas, Austin which is obviously rated as one of the best petroleum engineering graduate program globally. I reckon I'd be able to get good reference or at least a good recommendation to study for another Masters or a PHd in Petroleum Engineering there or at least any good university in the US since GRE is valid for 5 years.
At the end of the day, if all works according to my plan by God's grace, I'd have a very good establishment and link to both the Asian and American market.

I don't know if TTU would accept for me to defer my admission,  I reckon the chances of that might be slim though.
So what do you thinkhuh?  smiley
Why would you want to do that? Why do you have to commit some years of the 'prime' moments of your life into a course you will not need afterall? Besides the waste of time, I don't think any University will allow a deferment of admission/enrollment for more than a year (even for nationals). And as far as I know, MIST programmes do not take less than 2 years to complete (except you are planning to drop out midway, which equally will not make much sense), because, as an overall consequence, your integrity (as well as other ambitious Naijas) might be negatively affected.
Furthermore, if I may ask, why will you need a PhD in petroleum engineering? If what you want is to, asap, be in a vantage position to be able to effortlessly 'milk the the oil and gas cow for $$$' (which is what I can predict), then you won't need a PhD. I'll advise you to focus straight on your life goals. Thread the beeline and do not follow serpentine and unnecessarily longer (and darker) routes. You might get lost in the process and eventually either arrive at your desired destination late (after all the actions have ended) or unfortunately find yourself in your starting position.

@myforumid: thanks for the encouragement.

Meanwhile, my MIT decision just came in. The day just keeps getting better. No specific funding information yet but its looking good:
Yes! I'm not surprised. i knew it was going to be a flood of acceptances for you, cezeozue; and, like NKnight once said, the real difficulty will be making a decision about where to go eventually. One of my firends also had to choose out of 9 fully funded offers, and that obviously took him days of 'joyful worries'.
Be calm, you WILL get full funding for the PhD programmes that accept you. With your profile, you might even get sizeable amount of funding (if not full) if the offer is Masters. You've got a strong profile man, and the big names will be willing to draw you to themselves.
Congratulations

2 Emails, 2 offers of Admission with some kind of in-state tuition payment scholarship from a texas-based top ten pet engr sch, Still confused on it sha and i definitely need advice/expanation on this

Pls SAFEAGO, Dayonako, bebure and other USA based guru, help out on this

Dear me,
You have been accepted by the graduate faculty. You will be awarded a $1000 scholarship that will enable you to be eligible for in state tuition.
You should allow the graduate school 2-3 weeks to complete the processing of your application.

Please ensure that you have completed their required documents.

The department requests that you notify us no later than March 31 of your intention to pursue your degree at ****** University.

Thank you
""""""""""""""""""

Cant wait for the others(more top 5 pet eng schs), before deciding b4/on March 1.

Hearty congratulations to you dude!
grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin
Never knew TX schools give out admission decisions (for Pet Eng) that quickly, especially for internationals. Apparently, you were ranked top in thepool of applicants, no wonder you got a scholarship and in-state tuition. Congrats again bro.
I guess you should wait for other offers to come and choose among the them which is best for you, considering the relative rankings in Pet Eng and, of course, the funding packages.
Even if it happens that full funding is not offered, I think you should accept the best of them based on the premises I suggested above. Get the best result in the first semester and then you might get a TA/RA in the second semester which will probably defray subsequent tuition and fees and as well pay you some decent monthly stipend.
Thanks for raising our hopes again with this. I pray God will not forget the rest of us who are still expecting o.

Hi Peoples,

My TU Delft admission email came in today. No Huygens nomination though sad . We now await the TU Delft scholarships. Fingers crossed.

@tabarity: Did you get nominated for Huygens? Any further communication with the school?
Hey cezeozue,
I wasn't nominated o. Guess those whizkids from india and china who already had 10 publications before age 22 might have taken all the HSP nominations. I can now only pray I get one of the other forms of scholarships. I still think you would have been nominated for HSP (with your profile) had you completed your application before the scholarship deadline. Not to worry man, you've many more great opportunities. Enjoy.
EducationRe: Preparing for GRE by tabarity: 3:58pm On Jan 15, 2011
^^ Online master programmes should be flexible enough to allow you, to some reasonable extent, plan your study by yourself. This means it might not include significant research component. And as such, lack of previous research experience should not pose any threat to admission in my opinion, moreso that you can fend for yourself financially. Actually, with your profile, you should get into a couple of your choice schools (I don't know if online programmes require GRE and subject GRE; if they do, make sure you blast them).
I am not a computer scientist and I don't know anyone in that career path so I cannot comment on how helpful a master degree can be to your career. A move of this kind should entirely be your decision.
Wish you the best.

There are several scholarships available here but the number of admit is generally few like we are abt 14 in my class from like 9 different countries with myself being the only black.

The less the number of admits, and the more the availablity of scholarships; the higher the probability that the funds will go round everyone.

Hey guys, why the hiatus? Is everyone tired?
Pls let the comments and the news keep flowing, i guess you are not aware of how much your comments are tremoendously benefitting a bunch of ambitious people (lurkers) out there. I am an example.

I just received an offer of admission to TU Delft to study petroleum engineering and geosciences. I got the information from this group and I applied and now I have something to show for it. Thanks guys. cheesy

But I still need more (esp from 2good and other Delft guys). I need to get a full scholarship wink. I haven't got any professional work experience in petroleum engineering, so I don't think the NFP is for me. What do you think my chances are for clinching some other forms of scholarships there? what do you think I should start doing now?

Hope to hear from u soon.
