ibn hasan Sorry for the late reply. KAUST is a good school, and so very competitive to get in. If you apply there, you will be competing for spots with guys from Cambridge, Harvard, Cornell and the likes. So you want to get the best you can get in the GRE and write a really good SOP. Create an impression on the reviewer that you are really interested in their research areas and you do associate with their core values. You will be fine. Regarding GRE materials, I only used Barrons, that's all. You can also get one too. But I think you may have to do more than that since the testing format changed recently. Good luck bro. |

^^The best (and, of course, the most expensive; yet cheap) guy that will do it for you is living right within you. ![]() |
wokemzine:If what you mean is an advanced degree (say MSc), then I'd recommend the IITs (Indian Institute of Techs). These schools are highly prestigious, even more than some US schools (by objective standards). Also, be aware that nobody competes with Indians when it comes to computational applications such as control and automation. However I think you should also bear in mind what opportunities might be available after graduation. |
rapheal2k9:When I took mine 2 years ago, the fee was 37K. |
The rule of thumb is that you start the process approximately 18months before your desired enrollment date. That means that if you want to start with your graduate programme by Sept 2012, you should begin now. You will have to prepare hard to take the GRE. Your best bet is to TRASH the thing to give yourself an edge for fellowships. You will also have to improve on your GPA. Admissions (esp in the US and Canada where there are better post-graduation job opportunities) are progressively getting tougher and more competitive every year. So take the GRE and TOEFL, get your transcripts, get good recommendations (that can take longer than you might anticipate), write great admission essays and apply early (for fall 2012, I'd suggest applying latest by December 2011). However, I would advise that you concentrate on improving your GPA for now (this is your only chance). Hope it helps. |
See me, I dey find money to go to TAMU while KAUST dey beg me with $70k. No be funny world wey we dey? |
ast_inno:Congratulations on your admission. But which one is summer session? Just curious. Do you have to enroll by June when the summer semester starts? Do you pay for that?As regards TAMU, they've made the first round of offers and all accepted applicants must have accepted or declined last week. So, hopefully you should get a decision this week or (unfailingly) next week. Goodluck! |
^^We really do not discuss business matters here Mr. MD, kindly take your product to 'Alaba International Market' forum. Thank you ![]() |
flo_path1:Hey flo_path1, what do you think might be the consequences if the school gets to know that the person in question in planning to go to another school. Perhaps you want to share the story of a similar recent case you were aware of and what the end result was. I have a friend already in a graduate programme in the US already but intends to leave to another programme in another school in the US. He's even secured an admission. He once said he feels so bad that he might have to suddenly announce to his research supervisor that he is leaving. He is also skeptical about what might be the reaction of the school that has thus far supported him financially (tuition and stipend). |
Could we say JHU and UPenn are more prestigious and thus more competitive than MIT and Stanford in engineering? Obviously NO! It's just money matters. But these decisions are absolutely unbelievable for such a profile. |
cezeozue: tiana85:As we can see, the economy of the WHOLE world is fast crashing down. Yet another warning for saints to put their houses together in preparation for His arrival. |
tiana85:No. I am not currently employed, nor do I have any work experience. These are important requirements for nfp. |
MS programs in private schools like Stanford are simply not for the poor/average. They are designed primarily to rake in money to supplement research funds in a little way. A few promising admitted MS guys do receive support (especially if some prof recognize they might be of great benefit to their research group). Seriously cezeozue, I wonder why Stanford and Wisconsin are not offering you some substantial financial aid, with your profile - it beats my imagination. As for me, two admits so far: Delft and TAMU, both for MS petroleum, no funds yet. I really need prayers guys. |
^^ No mind them jo. PennState (as well as most public schools in Pennsylvania) is broke. They couldn't accept you simply because they don't have the funds available (I guess). AFAIK, PA schools recently experience a huge budget cut on education by the state gov't. Again, you have the best already (MIT, Stanford). These are very prestigious schools o. Any news on funding yet? |
cezeozue:Awww ![]() It's okay man. Ivies are only good for sciences but not so great for Engineering. You've got the best in your palms man, so this should be a blessing in my opinion (it reduces the degree of freedom of alternatives you will be considering when making your final decision). ![]() |
^^Yes, you are right. But the point is there much better funding opportunities in the US than in the UK (at the Masters level). Imperial, RGU, Aberdeen and HWU are all great schools to study petroleum. A good degree form any of them will stand shoulder to shoulder in the industry with some of the best from the US. However, while it is possible to get your degree free of charge from the US, it is very very uncommon to get a masters degree from the UK without pouring out your savings or going through PTDF/ESSO etc. |
magnamos:Congratulations man. Regarding which one to choose, I think you should go with your mind. The truth is that we can only offer you some words of advice, but you don't have to go with any. It's all about you, your life and what your heart desires are. magnamos:Why would you want to do that? Why do you have to commit some years of the 'prime' moments of your life into a course you will not need afterall? Besides the waste of time, I don't think any University will allow a deferment of admission/enrollment for more than a year (even for nationals). And as far as I know, MIST programmes do not take less than 2 years to complete (except you are planning to drop out midway, which equally will not make much sense), because, as an overall consequence, your integrity (as well as other ambitious Naijas) might be negatively affected. Furthermore, if I may ask, why will you need a PhD in petroleum engineering? If what you want is to, asap, be in a vantage position to be able to effortlessly 'milk the the oil and gas cow for $$$' (which is what I can predict), then you won't need a PhD. I'll advise you to focus straight on your life goals. Thread the beeline and do not follow serpentine and unnecessarily longer (and darker) routes. You might get lost in the process and eventually either arrive at your desired destination late (after all the actions have ended) or unfortunately find yourself in your starting position. |
cezeozue:Yes! I'm not surprised. i knew it was going to be a flood of acceptances for you, cezeozue; and, like NKnight once said, the real difficulty will be making a decision about where to go eventually. One of my firends also had to choose out of 9 fully funded offers, and that obviously took him days of 'joyful worries'. Be calm, you WILL get full funding for the PhD programmes that accept you. With your profile, you might even get sizeable amount of funding (if not full) if the offer is Masters. You've got a strong profile man, and the big names will be willing to draw you to themselves. Congratulations ![]() |

cezeozue:Hey cezeozue, I wasn't nominated o. Guess those whizkids from india and china who already had 10 publications before age 22 might have taken all the HSP nominations. I can now only pray I get one of the other forms of scholarships. I still think you would have been nominated for HSP (with your profile) had you completed your application before the scholarship deadline. Not to worry man, you've many more great opportunities. Enjoy. |
^^ Online master programmes should be flexible enough to allow you, to some reasonable extent, plan your study by yourself. This means it might not include significant research component. And as such, lack of previous research experience should not pose any threat to admission in my opinion, moreso that you can fend for yourself financially. Actually, with your profile, you should get into a couple of your choice schools (I don't know if online programmes require GRE and subject GRE; if they do, make sure you blast them). I am not a computer scientist and I don't know anyone in that career path so I cannot comment on how helpful a master degree can be to your career. A move of this kind should entirely be your decision. Wish you the best. |
2good:That seems to me a good news ![]() The less the number of admits, and the more the availablity of scholarships; the higher the probability that the funds will go round everyone. Or you actually meant something else by this statement? |
myforumid3:Hey i don't seem to get your email add. I tried mailing your but i got a delivery error. U could send me a mail to tabarity [at] gmail [dot] com. |
cezeozue: That's a lovely profile you've got man. You will definitely get into one of the big names; trust me you will. Your work experience with your nice academic profile will cover up for your slight weakness in research experience. That's good man. Please keep us informed o when the funded offers start flowing in in their droves as from Jan 2011. Congrats ![]() |
^^Got a confirmation of receipt of docs early November. I will be applying to TAMU and Colorado Mines (USA). What about you? |
Hey guys, why the hiatus? Is everyone tired? Pls let the comments and the news keep flowing, i guess you are not aware of how much your comments are tremoendously benefitting a bunch of ambitious people (lurkers) out there. I am an example. I just received an offer of admission to TU Delft to study petroleum engineering and geosciences. I got the information from this group and I applied and now I have something to show for it. Thanks guys. ![]() But I still need more (esp from 2good and other Delft guys). I need to get a full scholarship . I haven't got any professional work experience in petroleum engineering, so I don't think the NFP is for me. What do you think my chances are for clinching some other forms of scholarships there? what do you think I should start doing now?Hope to hear from u soon. |

?
. We now await the TU Delft scholarships. Fingers crossed.
