IN his final executive act as president, Bill Clinton yesterday dramatically pardoned more than 100 Americans including Susan McDougal, his former Whitewater business partner, and Patty Hearst, the former terrorist.
Miss Hearst, the granddaughter of the newspaper baron, William Randolph Hearst, had served three years in prison after joining the left-wing Symbionese Liberation Army that kidnapped her in 1974. Mr Clinton also pardoned his own brother, Roger, who was convicted for cocaine possession in Arkansas and who was among a number of drug offenders that Mr Clinton believed had been punished too harshly.
There was, however, no reprieve for Webster Hubbell, a former partner in Mrs Clinton's Little Rock law firm who was convicted as a result of the Whitewater investigation. There was also no pardon for the former junk bond king Michael Milken who also served a prison sentence for fraud.
Mr Clinton had delayed announcing the pardons from Friday until yesterday morning. A row over Miss McDougal's inclusion is thought to have caused the delay. Miss McDougal, a Clinton friend from Arkansas, spent 18 months in prison after refusing to give evidence that might implicate the President and First Lady in a bank fraud while he was the state's governor.
No one expected Mr Clinton to go quietly, but the final hours of his presidency proved to be as full of drama as a Hollywood film script. The outgoing president's longest day threatened to overshadow the inauguration ceremonies for George W Bush as arguments raged inside the White House over whether to pardon key figures in investigations into alleged corrupt financial dealings by the Clintons
.

Long after Mr Clinton bade an emotional farewell to White House staff on Friday evening, a number of aids are understood to have cautioned Mr Clinton against including Miss McDougal on the list. Her lawyer, Mark Geragos, said he had been told that she was: "Front and centre the main reason," for the delay in naming those pardoned. After hours of debate, a decision was postponed until yesterday morning, shortly before Mr Bush was due to take the oath of office in Washington.
The events of Mr Clinton's last full day in office could not have been better staged to steal the headlines from his successor. What is normally a day of formality and farewells was transformed into a series of political dramas, which began with the breakfast dishes barely cleared from the President and First Lady's table for the last time.
Rumours of the deal that would resolve the threat of criminal charges against Mr Clinton for lying under oath about his affair with Monica Lewinsky, began to sweep Washington. Behind the scenes, White House special counsel Robert Ray was concluding a deal with the president's lawyer David Kendal that would lift the shadow that has hung over Mr Clinton for the last seven years.
The investigation, which began with the Whitewater land deal and Kenneth Starr, was concluded with the president admitting that he lied while giving evidence in a sexual harassment lawsuit brought by former Little Rock hotel receptionist Paula Jones.
Mr Clinton also agreed to pay a $25,000 fine, a five-year suspension of his licence to practice law in Arkansas, and not to seek the recovery of millions of dollars he has spent in legal fees fighting the investigation. Most significantly, he admitted to "testifying falsely" about his relationship with Miss Lewinsky while she was a White House intern.
Mr Clinton was said to be relieved to have the threat of charges removed after he left office, but upset that his final hours in the White House were once again dominated by the scandals that have dogged his presidency. For much of the rest of Friday, the President and First Lady packed the last of their personal belonging to be moved to their house outside New York.
The White House also released a list of gifts which Mr Clinton had decided to keep, including boxing gloves from the actor Sylvester Stallone, a kitchen table, two carpets and an oil painting of Buddy, his dog. Mr Clinton has not, however, forgiven everyone as it was revealed that Linda Tripp, whose secret recordings of her telephone conversations with Miss Lewinsky confirmed the relationship, has been sacked.
Miss Tripp, who worked at the Pentagon, was reclassified as a political employee after revealing the affair. White House rules require political staff to resign when a president leaves office. She was sacked for refusing to do so.
Even 90 minutes after President Bush had taken the oath of office, the now former president seemed reluctant to leave the Washington stage. Arriving at Andrews Air Force Base to board Air Force One for the flight to New York, Mr Clinton gave an unprecedented departure speech to members of his personal staff, revealing that he had toured the empty rooms of the White House that morning, but emphasising that the political baton had been passed to his wife Hillary in the Senate.
Mr Clinton joked that the loss of his presidential privileges meant: "For the first time in eight years I am in the driving seat." He then issued what sounded like a warning to his opponents, saying: "I have left the White House, but I'm still here." In a display of loyalty, Mrs Clinton agreed to accompany her husband on the short trip to their new
house in Chappaqua rather than remain in Washington in her new role in the United States Senate.

This USA Business is just too damn HYPOCRITICAL:

US Presidents have routinely given Pardons to more people with crimes far greater than those of Thief Alams, and in a few instance, in more morally periled circumstances. Hardly any of them have not given Pardons to less than a 100 CRIMINALS (Spies, tax cheats, fraudsters, corrupt persons, murderers, etc, including 'Prisoners of Conscience' of course). How many times has Nigeria, or any country for that matter, expressed 'disappointment' over such pardons??

Bill Clinton's last Executive action in Office (Jan 20, 2001) was to grant Pardon to a former Business partner of his who was linked to the (in)famous WhiteWaters Scandal ( a corruption case which even somehow roped Bill Clinton and his wife, Hillary) and also to his own Brother, who had been convicted of Cocaine Possession. Bill Clinton ended up granting I think almost 500 Presidential Pardons.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/northamerica/usa/1318811/Clinton-grants-pardon-for-his-drug-offending-brother.html

President Gerald Ford also granted Pardon to his immediate Boss and preceding President ( Richard Nixon) after the (in)famous WaterGate Scandal (a grand scheme that involved Perjury, Corruption etc at the highest levels of the US Govt); as a matter of fact, he granted the ex-President 'Unconditional Pardon' to prevent him from even been tried in the US Courts for his crimes!! Yea, that right: unlike Thief Alams that was even convicted in our own court, ex-President Nixon was 'forgiven of ALL his sins, known and unknown' by President Ford's Pardon which ensured that he couldn't even be prosecuted. These examples are in no way Exceptional in the history of the granting of Presidential Pardons in the USA. Is this the same country you are 'happy' is criticizing your own country for doing way less than what they have done at various times, including recently??

There is NOTHING wrong ordinarily in granting pardons to CRIMINALS, afterall, Pardons are meant for Sinners and not Saints. GEJ's Pardon to Thief Alams is only wrong to the extent of the peculiar situation of Nigeria ie the Perception it gives about the ongoing 'Fight on Corruption'; and I agree completely on this grounds with people who have criticized this particular decision of GEJ, esp as Perception could often times be as powerful as Reality. However, I insist that we can criticize the decision without further 'foooling' ourselves and taking thrash from HYPOCRITES who do even 'worse' in this respect.

The USA should keep SHUT on this issue; if they dont, then we ought to remind them to so do
Politics › Re: Nigerian Breweries Invest 15 Billion Naira To Expand It's Factory In Aba. by taharqa: 2:21am On Mar 17, 2013
This topic just made me recall an article I read last week about the siting of the largest Aluminium Can Manufacturing Plant in Africa also in Aba, been financed by Fidelity Bank, that is nearing completion:

Fidelity Bank Plc has expressed its readiness to finance a multi-million naira aluminium can project in Aba.

The bank explained in a statement yesterday that the factory, when completed, is expected to take off with an initial production capacity of 1.2 billion cans yearly.
This, it stressed, would surpass the Agbara Can Manufacturing factory that took off with an initial production capacity of 600 million cans per year.

The bank argued that the new plant, when completed, would be the largest aluminum can factory in Africa
.

Managing Director/Chief Executive, Fidelity Bank, Reginald Ihejiahi explained that the financing options adopted by the bank were largely driven by its commitment and faith in the development of the Nigerian economy.

Ihejiahi added: “We are a bank operating in an emerging market and we believe that the industrial sector remains the heart of banking in such markets.”

Ihejiahi, whose bank also financed the Agbara Can Manufacturing factory that was constructed by GZ Industries further explained that as an institution in business, the bank is mandated to report to its shareholders.

He said: “When we opened Agbara Can manufacturing factory constructed by GZ Industries and which was commissioned by President Goodluck Jonathan in 2010, it started with 600 million cans per annum, but the second phase of its development took its production to 900million cans and later to 1.2billion.

“However, the Aba Can manufacturing company which is nearing completion will take off from the first day with 1.2billion production capacity and we believe that with this pace Nigeria will soon be self-sufficient in aluminum can production.”

Ihejiahi said the facility would offer enormous opportunity for job creation and other economic benefits to the citizens of the country.
The Aba Can factory is expected to service the breweries and beverage companies in the South-eastern and South-south parts of the country, and by extension other parts of Nigeria.

“We are also not ruling out export opportunities to West African and other African countries because of the size of the factory,” he said.

thelastPope: I am quite disappointed with your post. I understand if you are skeptical, but your analysis is what I have a problem with. You cannot compare Akpabio who is 6 years on the job to GEJ's 2 years. That is absurd.

Secondly, if you know anything about engineering and government processes, you should know how long it will take to plan a bridge like that. The process of design and geological survey alone cannot take less than a year. It is not a road, it is a bridge. Also, the time is will take to source funds for the project. These funds are not lying idle somewhere. The government had to concession it. Do you know how long that can take? I am actually amazed they could get it concessioned in less than 2 years, considering the amount involved. It is important that before we comment on these things, we must try and google to at least get an idea how it works elsewhere. It is like the foool yesterday who was shouting that the train took 30 hours and I had to show him that Texas to California on train takes 2 days for their locomotive trains. GEJ is not perfect and can never be because he is human, but what I mostly find disturbing and faulty with most of the criticisms I see is that they are not based on fact or on fair judgement. The earliest I can blame GEJ for not commencing work on the second Niger bridge will be 3 years. To be fair, no Nigerian president has embarked on so much activities at the same time in 2 years like GEJ. In fact, most have not even come close. In 2 years, OBJ as civilian president was still arranging his office desk. Buhari ruled almost 2 years and his only achievement was to flog people on the streets. Shagari did nothing. Babangida in 2 years was still trying to justify why we should accept military rule. Abacha? Nothing to wite about. Only OBJ in his military rule is comparable.
WORD!!!

In fact, Dat's all.

I dare any person to een attempt to dispute the @Emboldened.

kingoflag: My man, shut the f-cuk up, u ignorant, dirty and bitter old man. How many people pardoned have ever stolen funds meant for the American people?! U try that u will die in prison! The Rep.William Jefferson associated with Atiku--- $100,000 was his sin and he got disgraced and got a 13yr Federal prison sentence. The former mayor of East Cleveland, an Igbo man, Emmanuel Onwuwor, probably had your mentality--- his crime was less than $50,000 and he was blessed with a 9year Federal Prison sentence; today is homeless, living in a friend's basement apartment, and looking for a job.

Now, tell me again, what was the madness u was spewing up there again? F*uck.ing criminal minded soul.
You are just too damn IGNORANT. Gosh!! Abeg, stop Shouting if you do not know what d helll u are talking about. Advice: Google is yr frnd. Use it when in doubt

ypzilanti: The average American would not support a pardon for a government thief by his former subordinate (now President). I guess since you support such, your are waaayyyy smarter than them.
