Who is responsible for sweeping the road and keeping it clean after construction so it can last for much longer?

shymexx: Who does good governance tour, anyway?? Perhaps, Nigerians are blind to see if the government is working, or not... Or we still live in the stone age where people don't have picstory/access to what's going on... This government is so wasteful, clueless, useless, and medieval - the semi-illiterate president and his co-travellers only care about jamboree and budgeting billions of naira for his obese wife like that's what his actual job entails.... Oh lord, how did this fat headed black dumb piece of shyte become the president of the most populous black country in the world?? *Sighs*

And how come every topic about Lagos gets some people moisthuh What's there to "tour" in an opposition state?? The governor said "No" because the FG has done absolutely next to nothing in the state other than make money from there - and he has a right to reject noisemakers coming to claim his glory as theirs...

I'm from Lagos as well - and I'm also saying NO to those numbnuts, end of story!!! cool I'm with my governor on this!!
See that is just it @Emboldened . You say that the FG has done NOTHING in Lagos for the last 2 or so odd years- that's what many of you guys have been telling us , ehh?; I say (sorry, I know) that there are certainly things that the FG have done i Lagos different from what the State have done.

- I know for instance, that the Railways that have been DEAD/Moribund in Lagos for over a Decade have come back to life for almost a year now and is consistently making 18 trips each day throughout parts of Lagos, and ferrying more than 10,000 persons every day thereby helping to reducing the notorious Lag traffic;

- I also know that Lagosians (Businessmen and Passengers) can also now move their cargoes and themselves to much longer distances (to Kano, Ilorin, Minna, Oshogbo etc), again through other Railway Lines that has also been MORIBUND for at least a Decade;

- I know that Lagosian businessmen and Importers can now clear their Goods from the ports in matters of days,as opposed to doing so in months and incurring huge Demorrages as was the case for more than 8 years, cos of the Deepening of reforms in the Premier ports of Nigeria in Lagos;

- I also know that the FG is joining the Lagos State Govt and Private investors to develop DEEP SEA ports in Lagos and are in fact the ultimate LANDLORDS of some of them (for eg, the FG has a direct 20% stake in the developing Badagry Deep Sea port);

- I know that a new and classy GAT Terminal was built in just a year in Lagos (coupled with other HUGE improvements like VHF Systems, Total Radar System, Windshield System, Doppler System, Runway Lightnings, Alternative Power System etc) in the Lagos Airport;

- am also certain that the much talked about 'Failing Railings' in the Mainland Bridge have finally been fixed;

- I know that not less than 15 Distribution/Transmission Substations and Lines have been built in Lagos alone in the last 2 years;

- I know that a large chunk of the critical Oshodi-Apapa Road have been done by the FG, and work is still continuing as in some other roads in Lagos;

- I want to know the state of the newly awarded Standard Guage Lagos-Ibadan Railway, as well as other projects just beginning like the Lagos-Ibadan Road, etc etc.

These are some of those things I can remember off hand now But am almost certain that there are others and that I will be even more surprised than I was when I became aware of some things I NEVER knew was happening in Edo State.

Now, its clear that you and I almost totally disagree on this: you believe that the FG have done practically NOTHING in Lagos in 2-3 years; I say, they have done some things and likely others I am not even aware of yet. One of us MUST therefore be telling a LIE. The NGGT can help us find out who (through videos, Pictures, articles, etc).

Now, am NOT afraid to find out; are you??
Parents need to also start installing some confidence in their kids...

Most people join cults out of a need to belong..

I thank my parents for how I was raised. As at secondary school, I had university friends who were cultists. I can never forget the day I was in a friends room on campus whe a gunshot went off. My friend stood up, opened his ceiling, brought out 9 millimetre pistol and poked his head put of the room door to see what was happening. Meanwhile, I had laid as flat as I could on the ground and almost peed my pants. It seemed cool at the time, but the longer I hung out with them, the less attractive it became to me. When I left Nigeria, the pressure to belong was so high on me. And I would have been marked instantly because my friends cut across rival gangs and joining one would have instantly made me enemies with my other friends for no good reason. I am so glad I left. I would have made it through without joining, but it would have been very very tough.

Funny thing is when i moved to Ghana, I saw the rise of cultism firsthand. I knew some of them that transferred in like I did and I saw them set up shop. I saw them recruit ignorant little rich kids into the cults. I knew that these new recruits were illegal as their initiation didn't follow code. I was there whe the first altercation that led to the first cult shooting in Ghana went down, I knew all the participants on the shooting first hand even from Nigeria. I saw things that sent shivers down my spine. I could even call names. I even knew the kid who was purchasing the guns for them on campus.. Many kids had no idea how close they came to being killed in Ghana. Truth be told, cultism is for the weak and insecure. You don't need a gun or a gang to show your strength.

Simply put, Parents need to impart certain values and self confidence in their kids.

Wisdom, self confidence and street smarts were what kept me away from joining a cult in my life. Even after graduation from school, some of my friends who are pirates tried to get me in. I did my research on them, learnt their ways, but never joined because I just couldnt see myself as one of them despite the fact that they are a non violent confraternity of graduates.
Very well said, Bro; very very Well said....

I just feel for the Parents and family of this Guy; they would be passing through helll now....meanwhile, people should plz try to hold on distributing these kinds of news, esp in such graphic forms, until the immediate family of the deceased are somehow intimated. It would really be a terrible thing to get these kinds of new from a very public site like NL if you are close to the deceased.

Meanwhile, it is REALLY GREAT news that the very critical Benin-Onitsha 330KV Double circuit Transmission line is been completed. This line with 2 others (Afam-Jos and Alaoji-Warri-Onitsha), with some other shorter lines, are extremely critical in shoring up the Transmission infrastructure of Nigeria in the short and middle term to be able to wheel about 8500MW on-grid power successfully. Dont know the present state of the other two though.

From this report: 1 gone, the other 2 ongoing (though seems slow).

kettykings: A PPP will suffice , the Government can partner some Chinese foundries and metallurgical complexes who can invest in Onitsha and Nnewi .Also big Indian firms like Mittal steel and reliance industries limited can also invest in this sector, Parts needed in the Auto industry ,Oil industry and power sector can come locally from this PPP venture.

why i am suggesting this is that the River Niger has been dredged so iron ore from itakpe and steel scraps from the North can be shipped down at a very low cost via river Niger from Lokoja in kogi state , while the Coal from Enugu can also be transported by road to Onitsha the Metallurgical training school in Onitsha produces the manpower who will turn these raw materials to finished steel products in a Mini steel mill in Onitsha and Nnewi and the products are converted to car parts in Nnewi and Onitsha and marketed to the outside world and west Africa from Onitsha , this would create a local steel economy and encourage the growth of other steel manufacturing outfits and reduce forex from imported steel products.

koruji: A completely private company that has been in operation before GEJ dreamed of the presidency!!!

If anything Innoson is not happy that the FG is doling out bilions to buy foreign buses instead of purchasing from local manufacturers - how else are FG officials going to steal dollars?
What GEJ's policies have done for Innoson's progress according to Innoson (Chief Innocent Chukwuma) himself:

The Chairman, Innoson Group of Companies, Chief Innocent Chukwuma, recently spoke to Daily Sun on why he took the risk of setting up a vehicle plant in Nnewi, Anambra State, and a tyre factory in Enugu, at a time the first generation auto and tyre manufacturing firms in the country are either dead or dying. He also spoke on the Nigerian environment where manufacturers operate, and how they faired in 2012.

Assessing 2012

The manufacturing sector did better in the year 2012 than in recent years, because the present government has been giving attention to the area. She has been coming out with many incentives to encourage local industries. This government has shown in many ways that it is interested in improving activities in the manufacturing sector.

The Minister of Trade and Investment, Dr. Olusegun Aganga, has been making a lot of efforts to improve things in the sector. So, with all the things they have been doing, there was remarkable improvement in the sector in 20012. And one thing I need to point out is that anytime there is a problem and you draw their attention to it, they look into it and provide a solution. That is very commendable. I urge the government to continue this way because, if the encouragement they gave manufacturers in 2012 is extended to 2013, there would be a lot of improvements.

You mentioned Dr Aganga. So, you think the minister is doing well?

Yes, the way he looks into our problems is very encouraging. He is doing very well. I urge him to continue and do more for manufacturers.

Automotive industry in 2012

The industry did very well. My company, Innoson Vehicle Manufacturing Company Limited, Nnewi, did better in 2012 than it did in 2011, and it is something to be happy about. I am looking forward to 2013 being even far better than 2012 because, everyday we are improving; doing everything possible to satisfy the expectations of those who buy vehicles from us. Yes, we are a new company in the auto industry but we are doing all we can to ensure that our products remain very competitive. If things continue the way they are now in 2013, we will do better than we’ve done in the out-going year.

Mass transit

The mass transit scheme was a very good idea. But the problem was that people did not allow government to fully implement the programme it planned as part of the subsidy withdrawal. If the government had been allowed to implement it fully, the impact would have been felt more. The problem was that, following the protests by people who felt that the pump price of fuel was too high, government compromised on its own stand and watered down the deregulation plan which affected its ability to implement the projects designed to cushion the effects of the subsidy withdrawal. Government just wanted to make the protesters happy, but it affected its original plan.

All over the world, what happens is that the money realized from the withdrawal of subsidy or increase in fuel pump prices is reinvested in mass transportation and road maintenance to benefit all. That was what I think the government had planned. This was not allowed to happen here. If everybody had given government the desired support, I am sure by now, a lot of things would have changed because you will recall that when the announcement was made, President Goodluck Jonathan said what government planned to do with the money from the subsidy withdrawal. So, my belief is that if Nigerians will support that idea which will at the end of the day benefit the common man, everybody will be happy.

In other words, subsidy withdrawal and full deregulation will be good for the country?

Full deregulation will help the country, and everybody knows, but some people are using the masses to say no. Unfortunately, the masses being used to protest the plan do not foresee the benefits of deregulating the (downstream) oil industry.

Many people, including me, know that full deregulation will help the industry boost the economy and benefit the masses that were used to spoil the plan. Today, diesel is not subsidised but it is easily available and, therefore, better for manufacturers because with the stability in price, you can easily calculate your costs. But without availability and stability in pump price, you encounter problems. It is better that the price is steady and anytime you want it, you get than for it to cheaper and not available. This way, your manufacturing activities will be running smoothly.

If they extend this to petrol, it will be better for everybody. The government will plan ahead for the good of everybody with the gains of subsidy withdrawal. The present government seems to have the common man in mind and this can be seen through some of its programmes. Recently, President Jonathan assured us that in 2013, electricity generation would improve considerably.

This is possible because the signs are there already. Everybody is seeing the steps being taken to make unreliable electricity supply a forgotten issue. In the manufacturing sector, we are enjoying electricity now than before and we are yet to get to 2013. This means that before 2013 ends, there will be a lot of difference. Before now, our electricity consumption was just 10 per cent from public power supply and 90 per cent generator. But today, it has gone up to 60 per cent. The only problem is that the tariff is high. But to me, it is better that the tariff is high and the power supply is steady than for the tariff to be low and power is not steady. Steady supply of power at reasonable cost is essential for the survival of industries.

Challenges

That high tariff on electricity is the biggest problem. Yes, power supply has improved but we are yet to get there. Unfortunately, the new tariff is posing its own headache. For instance, one factory alone in the Innoson Group – the plastics industry in Enugu – pays a monthly electricity bill of N30 million. It takes a lot of toll on the factory. It does not encourage growth and expansion. That heavy monthly bill reduces your ability to bring in more equipment and employ more hands. It is a problem government should look into because it is a problem all manufacturers are battling with.

You commended the mass transit scheme launched in January 2012, though you believe the scale should have been larger. But what impact did it have on the local auto industry?

It made impact on the auto manufacturing industry, because it kept some factories busy, because we produced some of the buses and supplied to the scheme.

And perhaps more hands were engaged?

Yes, because when the order came, we employed more people so that we would be able to build and supply the buses faster.

Have you supplied all the buses ordered from your company, and how many were they?

Innoson has supplied all the buses ordered and if they need more, we are ready to build. Innoson supplied over 100 units of the mass transit buses.

There was complaint that more imported buses were ordered for the scheme than local vehicles, thereby defeating Federal Government’s intention of using the mass transit project to help the local bus builders like Innoson.

The President gave instruction that buses made locally should be used. But it seems that after buying up all the stocks the local manufacturers had on ground, they had to turn to the importers to meet up the demand.

Some people also said it would have been better if it was made a revolving scheme, so that by now more transporters would still be benefiting as more buses are supplied. Do you agree?

If they will continue to give order for the buses well in advance, it will be easy to plan and produce whatever they want. But most of the time, they don’t place their order in advance. What they do when they come is that they ask you which buses do you have on ground. But the problem is that all over the world, you don’t build buses and keep. Rather, you produce according to demand. But if they give us an order spread over 12 months, for instance, every month, we will produce and supply. This way, the factory will be busy and we will be able to plan ahead and employ more people. Coming hastily and taking all the bus samples on display is not enough to support the plants. It does not encourage sustained production.

Between July 2010, when President Jonathan commissioned Innoson Vehicle plant in Nnewi, and now, how has the factory faired?

The factory has so far performed very well, and Nigerians from all corners of the country are aware that Innoson vehicles are produced in Nnewi, and have been patronising our products after the commissioning. Nigerians from both the private sector and government circles have been patronising Innoson vehicles.

You would recall that on that day, the President committed himself to promoting ‘Made in Nigeria’ products, including vehicles from the factory. To what extent has government lived up to this pledge?

The Federal Government has kept its words, because many ministries and parastatals have purchased vehicles from the factory. Ministries have been ordering vehicles from us and we have been supplying them.

Apart from government circles, where else can Innoson vehicles be found in Nigeria, and who are the buyers from the private sector?

You can find my vehicles everywhere in the country and even outside Nigeria, like Ghana. A good number of transporters across the country now use Innoson buses because they are more comfortable with the vehicles and have discovered that their maintenance is easy and their spare parts are available everywhere. If you go to E. Ekesons today, they have a lot of my buses on their fleet. The list includes Young Shall Grow, Autostar, Orizu Motors, and many of the popular transporters in Benin and Lagos.

Feedback

They are very happy with the Innoson buses they are using. They have been telling me that with the quality standards they have seen in the vehicles, there will be no need for them to use imported buses anymore. They have found out that the Innoson buses are built for this country and are happy about that.

Innoson plant started with mini and midi buses, double cabin pick-ups and SUVs. Have you expanded the range now?

We started with 45-seater buses. We have 35-seater, 33-seater and 26-seater buses. There are also 22-seater and 18-seater types. And we have double cabin pick-ups and we have SUVs. The range also includes refuse compactors, but they are built only on request. We have built the refuse compactors for some state governments. More models will be introduced in future. In fact, we have plans to extend the factory to another place.

Talking about Ghana, a government delegation from there once invited you to set-up a similar plant, but you preferred to start with exporting the vehicles from Nnewi, until the ripe time to build a factory abroad. Are there many Innoson vehicles in Ghana now?

Some transporters in Ghana have been using Innoson vehicles, and are still using them up till today. One good thing is that as one person puts an Innoson vehicle on the road over there, more people show interest, and more are coming to buy.........

omenka: Thisday, you reveal just how clueless and retarded you are, just like your paymaster. Since when did military command come under the jurisdiction of the state government??

What a shame.
SHUT it there. There are JTF troops operating in Nasarawa cos of the security challenges there. They were of course deployd by d President afta d State Govt's request. Now, the State Govt can ask these already deployd troops to take care of any emerging security concern without seeking d direct permissn of d President. Wheda it was d State Govt Or even d Univ Authorities who intimated d troops to d protest is debated, but it was not d President that did so. The President's responsibility is to find out exactly what led to d death of those students, and order specific sanctions where appropiate

naptu2: Those guests got it wrong. The Nigerian anthem is always played last (because it's the most important). I posted this on another thread:

You got the protocol right regarding state flags, but you got it wrong with regards to anthems.

Regarding state flags, the law states: -

Furthermore, when flown on an official vehicle, the national flag must be flown at the right side of the vehicle, while any other flag that is flown must be flown at the left side of the vehicle.

With regards to anthems, protocol demands that the national anthem must always be played 2nd or last, as the case may be. That's why, if you notice, during football matches, the visiting team's anthem is played first before the home team's anthem is played.

Similarly, during state visits, the visiting head of state's anthem must be played before the Nigerian anthem.

This is similar to the order of arrival and salute at state functions. Protocol demands that the President must be the last dignitary to arrive the venue.

For example, this is the order of arrival/salute during independence day and armed forces remembrance day celebrations.

Military rule.

1) Service Chiefs - Receive the General Salute.

2) Minister of Defence/Chief of Defence Staff/Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff - Receives the National Salute (first stanza of the National Anthem).

3) Chief Justice of Nigeria - Receives the General Salute.

4) Chief of Staff, Supreme Headquarters/Chief of General Staff - Receives the General Salute.

5) Head of State/President/Commander in Chief - Receives the National Salute (full anthem).

Civilian rule.

1) Service Chiefs: Receive the General Salute.

2) Chief of Defence Staff: Receives the General Salute.

3) Minister of Defence: Receives the General Salute.

4) Chief Justice of Nigeria: Receives the General Salute.

5) Speaker, House of Representatives: Receives the General Salute.

6) Senate President: Receives the General Salute.

7) Vice President: Receives the National Salute (first stanza of the National Anthem).

8 ) President & Commander in Chief - Receives the National Salute (full anthem).

Below, flag of the Commander in Chief of The Armed Forces of The Federal Republic of Nigeria (which must always be flown to the left, while the National Flag is at the right). It is an offence for anybody, except the Commander in Chief, to fly this flag.
