AnonyNymous: There are stupid non religious people and there are stupid religious people. There are intelligent non religious people and there are intelligent religious people. The few intelligent non religious people we hve in Nigeria are too small in number to make on reasonable impact on society at large. However, if Nigerians were released from the shackles of religion, imagine what we could achieve! Imagine, a Professor Emeritus will throw away his brain and attend the church program titled 'operation point and kill my enemies' where he starts rolling on the floor and screaming like a baby If a responsible person like that could instead apply his knowledge for the good of society, instead of blaming 'spiritual problems' just imagine what we could achieve Don't you think you have lost the argument @Emboldened |

Brigham: Let's take the Nigeria government for example, corrupt, clueless, redundant, and vision less.
If the non religious folks i.e citizens that rejects organized religion in anyway, take to the streets to protest against unemployment, injustice, corruption and the religious ones are going about their daily businesses, what would you think will happen?
They'll be absent from work and probably get a sack, they maybe arrested for constituting nuisance and disturbing public peace.
The Arab spring that toppled the almost everlasting and undemocratic government in the world was successful because of the huge population of religious folks involved, imagine a handful holding that type of protest.
Scientific innovations are galaxies apart from political reforms So there's no way out? @Emboldened |

Brigham: If you think the two posters above me are funny, click like.
Why people blame religion (Christianity) for the state of the nation isn't because of lack of virtues promoting tendencies absent in religion, but the lack of adequate reactions and almost slavish it-will-be-well screams.
Of all the miasma of corrupt cases hovering around our country's atmosphere since the inception of Buhari's era, the suspension of Jibrin for exposing the rot in the 'house' is enough for hungry and church-dwelling youths to take to the street and lead a protest against organised and constitutional corruption that has bedevilled this country.
Die Religion ... ist das Opium des Volkes"- Karl Marx, translated as 'religion is the opiate of the people', one of the long term effects of opiate is development of tolerance ; religion and its basic tenet that supernatural forces control the natural has imbued Nigerians with a vivid flame of tolerance that has aided the ills of political class. I am a Christian and I am not cool with the level of tolerance Christianity preaches reason being that such level of tolerance is anti Christian. When Jesus got angry with business men in God's temple, he reacted and drove them all away. Scripture says that he was mad, that shows how angry he was. But today's pastor's preach useless tolerance even at the point of death, there's a lot of brainwashing there |

Seun: My beef with religion is that it promotes this mindset: "I know I am right and nothing you can say or show me could possibly change my mind". I know you would come. There's a thing that I don't understand, why are your anti religion posts more again Christians than Muslims? That's BTW, I personally think the I too know mindset is black man thing not religion but I could be wrong. How can one contact you directly? Do you attend to Nairaland's Facebook inbox? |

Brigham: Non religious people in Nigeria are like a handful of sand at the beach compared to the religious ones small but not insignificant. Not good enough. Non religious people have more freedom now compared to those that lived in the era when church hunted and killed them yet those ones weren't deterred. They were like a handful of sand at the beach and Yet they made a handful of positive impacts. Their legacy is still here. |

AnonyNymous: Take a good look at the attached. This is what Brigham said. Religion is not to blame for the problems. Its not to blame for our leaders looting us dry. Its to blame for the fact that we refuse to do anything about it. When we encounter one problem or the other, instead of solving it, religion tells us that it is one witch or uncle in the village that is holding back our destiny. See the thread where a woman with a rare disease that made her stomach to swell was burnt to death and called an evil witch. It is religion that tells us there is one la-la land waiting for us somewhere, therefore, we are content with mediocrity. That is how religion is a problem in Nigeria. I concur but not convinced until you give me examples of what non religious people in Nigeria have done or are doing differently to change the system. |

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MEN AND WOMEN. WOMEN..... At 18, they want handsome men. At 25, they want successful men. At 30, they want sensible men. At 40, they want mature men. MEN ARE VERY SIMPLE. At 18, they want pretty young girls. At 25, they want pretty young girls. At 30, they want pretty young girls. At 40, they want pretty young girls. At 50, they still want pretty young girls. See... Men are so simple minded. A teacher asked his students, 1+1=? A student stood up and said 4. A man passing by overheard the answer. He shook his head and said to himself "My God, Buhari will not kill us in this country. Every thing has increased, Transport fare, fuel price, nomination forms, WAEC, NECO, JAMB Form, Kero, Gass, Marriage, Beans, Tomatoes, Garri, Rice, Data, Even 1+1 that used to be 2 has now gone up to be 4!!! |

One day in a well known university, a senior professor started his class on a very serious topic. The moment he turned towards the blackboard, one of the students whistled. He turned, looked at the class and asked the whistler's name..... As usual and as expected no one answered. The professor peacefully kept the pen in his pocket and picked up his bag. Saying that, the lecture ends here and that was enough for the day, he started moving towards the gate of the class. Students were overjoyed to be free. Then, he suddenly stopped and turned towards the class, kept his bag on the table and said, "I'll tell you a story to utilise the remaining time." Everyone became interested. Yesterday night I tried hard to sleep, but it was miles away from my eyes, so I thought I'd better get petrol in my car, which will save my time next morning and might induce sleep. After having my tank full, I started roaming in that area, enjoying the peace of a traffic free ride. Suddenly, on the corner I saw a girl who was as young and beautiful as the clothes she was wearing. Must have been returning from a party. Out of courtesy, I turned my car towards her and asked if I may be of any help. She asked me if I could drop her to her home, she'll be very obliged, to which I agreed. (Who would deny a beautiful young company instead of a dry non sleepy need ) She sat in the front seat with me. We started talking, and to my amazement she was very intelligent, had control on many topics which many youngsters don't. When we reached her address, she admitted my courteous nature and behavior and accepted that she had fallen in love with me. I also admitted her intelligence and beauty and that I've also started liking her. I told her about my job as a professor in the university. The girl asked my number, which I gave her willingly. Then she asked me a favor, to which i couldn't have denied naturally. She said that her brother is a student in the same university, and asked me to take care of him, since we'll be in a long relationship now. I asked the name of the student. She said that I'll recognise him with one of his very prominent quality. He whistles a lot. The moment the professor said this, all eyes in the classroom turned towards the boy who had whistled. The professor turned to that boy and said, "Young man I didn't get my Ph. D by sitting on my ass. " |

Pauly's family is at dinner, the 10-year-old daughter isn't eating much, and she just keeps her head down.
After a few minutes, she says, "I have something to tell you."
Everyone gets silent and they all listen.
"I am no longer the virgin I used to be." And she begins to cry.
A long silence, and Mr Pauly speaks to Mrs Pauly, "It's your fault, you know, always dressed and made up like a tramp. You think that's an example for your daughter? Always wallowing on the sofa; it's just terrible; that's why problems like this come up!"
Then Mrs Pauly lights in on Mr Pauly, "And you! Do you think that you're a good example? Wasting your scrawny paycheck with your drinking buddies who even come drunk into the house - do you think that's a good example for a little girl 10 years old?"
Then Pauly charges back in, "And her sister, that no-good, with her hairy and dope-crazed boyfriend, always with their hands all over each other - you think that's a good example too?"
And it goes on and on, back and forth. Then the grandmother hugs the little girl to console her and asks, "Now, darling, how did this happen?
And the little girl answers, trying to hold back her sobbing, "Father Michael chose another girl to be the Virgin in the Christmas pageant this year." |

Isaacmacdon: I dig your point tallesty1. I wonder how their minds got tainted with filth. I'm not suprised.
Back to your question; the current problem of nigeria or africa in generality is not christianity.
Christians are very innovative people. Take a cue from the u.s and the u.k, these guys are very well developed as a result of the much distinctive manner the christians operated. The church had a huge part to play.
Any good thing or idea a christian puts up for the development of a country always go a long way. Nigeria is the most religious country on planet earth, but do you know what's stifling our growth? GREED. Exactly. Sometimes I do ask myself, is it religion that made our leaders to loot and deposit our money in foreign banks? Is religion the reason Nigerians refuse to return home to work after schooling abroad? In education sector, church owned schools are outperforming government schools so how exactly is it holding us back? There's something wrong in our system and it's definitely not caused by Christianity. Buhari traveled abroad to treat ear infection but Clinton's personal doctor is a Yoruba man. That news broke my heart like a failed relationship. |

Paulpaulpaul: You're right and he can also make first fruit compulsory as well as tithe and offering. Thanks but can you answer my initial question? *MODIFIED*. SO I asked how Christianity is holding Nigeria back and the first few comments from atheists said Christianity is the reason because they blame witches and evil spirits for their problems instead of working for a solution. It's OK. But what I don't understand is why the same atheists are busy blaming Christianity for our problems instead of working for a solution. |

A lot of people on here believe that religion is the bane of nigerian problems. Seun once said that religious people need help and we always blame religion when someone does the unthinkable.
I personally think our problems is not caused by religion(Christianity) but by a lack of visionary leadership, colonization, and the fact that our Einsteins prefer to live and work abroad. But some are of the opinion that Nigeria will become heaven without religion.
So I am asking to know how Christianity as a religion contributes to our underdevelopment. |
