Whether cleaning or investment banking job, its not easy to make money here! Simple. |
endure:I want to believe that she has just created a new username for her husband to post messages. Well, she is entitled to use the name also as the "two have become one". So Nairalanders in Dubai, here is your chance to make friends. @ Poster. Good for clearing things up, though you did introduce another dimension. |
Nice pictures you've got there. Lets see as many as possible. I enjoy doing such trips as I am very interested in tourism too. |
Whatever budget you decide to draw up, do not include a Tokunboh car in the list except you want to face mechanics and be harrased/stripped of valuables by Area boys when the car breaks down. Get a brand new car. |
I am actually waiting for "her" to defend herself. |
This place funny sha, Dem wan release prisoners early from jail due to prison congestion and Govt go still compensate the prisoners with money for the remaining period when Govt deny dem of staying in prison! can you imagine that? |
I recognise that, but my concern is how soon? |
I am not considering moving back home soon. Had some unpleasant experiences in Lagos. A guy sitting on the back sit of an okada with rider/accomplice shot a corporate guy point blank on his leg at Falomo roundabout ikoyi around 1.30pm on a week day, dragged his envelope or whatever and rode on to Bourdillon without resistance! The guy probably just left a bank. Car windshields and windows smashed on Osborne road ikoyi in traffic jam around 8pm right in front of me by guys who were hiding in the median and coming out periodically to attack (narrowly missed my windows being smashed). Absence of light, traffic bottlenecks, noise (from generators, vehicles, music and people), menace of area boys, complete lack of customer service in most service organisations, Water board asking me to pay 2500/month for water when I buy water for use twice a week, gross indiscipline, complete lack of regard for human life, mechanics reaping car owners, fuel attendants serving u fuel even before u get to your fuel tank (without wiping the meter after just serving someone else). The only good thing I can remember is the installation of prepaid PHCN meter, so I paid only for light consumed. Even at that, the installation process was a sham and topping up the card is like hell. DSTV is yet to recognise that customers are kings as they are still virtually a monopoly. They give us whatever channel they deem fit in Nigeria. Ever wondered why we don't get Travel Channel in Nigeria? Simple, Nigerians are not tourists! I can go on and on about the issues as they are still fresh in my mind. Not saying that there are no crime/murder or other issues here in the UK or elsewhere in the western countries, but you can get help in times of distress and such cases are usually exhaustively investigated and perpetrators brought to book! I quite agree that things are improving but only if we had leaders in the likes of El-Rufai, Ezekwesili, Akunyili, Ribadu and Okonjo-iweala in charge of most states/ministries will I be convinced that we can turn around in a few years. Maybe this new Government can work wonders. The previous govt in lagos tried to remedy a lot of things like road maintenance and traffic and tried in that regard. Guys are making a lot of bucks in Shares and investing in real estates, and all the various high profit/quick return investments schemes and that is what is keeping their spirits high at the moment. What will happen when the stock market matures like in Europe/America? Mobile communication has really helped in employing people (have u recently visited the Computer/Phone village in Ikeja? d place is like a beeeeeeeeehive of activities). I think my mind is at cool rest here and no malaria fever anymore so my GP would not have me visiting in a long while . 999 emergency call is available (but acknowledge that time wasters are not required here - only emergencies please!) and light is constant. Wish those of u considering going back home soon very very very good luck and kindly go to the various embassies and exchange your previous place (if possible) with those wishing to check out, They are very many. One guy was even advertising a Nigerian passport with Chinese visa for sale in Nairaland. Can you imagine? |
dollyshow:Well, make I join dem ask u question. How come your profile say u be 27 yrs and your post say u be 38 yrs? Na mistake again? |
lelele:Give them some time to receive a letter from the Home Office and then I suggest that you make a copy of the AIT letter sent to you and drop them off at the BDHC if you are in lagos. You just may get a faster response than if you waited for them to contact you. |
Sometimes dangerous to backdate entry stamps on return to Naija. Why? because stamps do differ in colour and other ways for different entry periods and this is known by BHC. So if you backdate and they suspect and check it out, the individual may be in trouble. A very frequent flyer had this issue and the person was innocent. It took a lot to get the passport released. So what went wrong? Turns out that the mistake was made by immigrations in communicating the wrong stamp for that period to BHC! |
Alright. This is the website of the global body http://www.alliancefr.org/sommaire.php3?lang=en . See what they offer. Check for global locations and view the locations in Nigeria. They usually have different classes depending on your level of French knowledge. They also offer weekdays and weekend classes and you could choose a time that fits your schedule. They do have the support of the French Government to encourage the learning of French. I suggest you pop in to one of their offices to learn more. |
Ejirox:lol . U try well well. Keep it up and you will surely speak it well. Bonne chance. |
Mustay:I would appreciate your letting me know what I should post more details about. Specify them. |
Mustay:Alliance Francaise Yaba is on Herbert Macauly Road. There is actually a language school near ABC in Jibowu and I think it is called Easy School of languages. It could be a good option also. The only difference is that Alliance Francaise is an international institution. manulove:@Manulove, thanks. I am still trying to perfect my French, not easy though if you don't live in a French country. So I intend to continue French studies and make trips. I love languages too and speak a bit of some other European languages, and at least Maths, Physics, e.t.c still find chance enter my head! |
You can learn French during the weekends at Alliance Francaise in Yaba or Ikoyi. They would point you to where you can get learning aid from. |
iginla:If I remember correctly, the class books sold in Alliance Francaise are usually sold with tapes. if they still sell them, you may want to buy and use for practice. |
casperc100:Like VOR said, there is really nothing you can do at the moment. they will list it as soon as they can and your case will be heard. |
Iginla, do not loose interest. Try and learn how to conjugate verbs properly and also learn a lot of words and you will see that it is not that difficult. French has rules, so try and learn the rules. Also learn the standard pronunciations like oi pronounced wa, example (Moi - pronounced Mwa, toi), ou pronounced ooh, eau pronounced as oh (eau, beau) and wherever they appear, you will be able to speak them correctly. Make sure you go back and learn the Alphabets pronunciation in the correct way and then all the accents (Grave, aigu and circonflex) on e, c and other alphabets. Use google language translation capability to translate words that you do not understand in french or translate english to french. It may not give you an entirely correct sentence, but it will point you in the right direction (Go to google home page, then click on language tools). Get a very good French dictionary like Harraps (the Large one) and listen to tapes. Do not be afraid to practice the language and be passionate about it! |
Drrionelli, you did a very good job of translating it correctly. |
CoolGuyB, you are definitely a consultant or an ex-Consultant with one of the firms! You hit it right. Dollyfil, like CoolGuyB said, you will be better off in the consulting firm. You will surely acquire a lot of skills working in a consulting firm and skills are what counts now. You get exposed to Top-level executives working for various companies including banks if you are in the financial advisory and services area and will develop extensive knowledge of the sector. Career progression is very good in consulting firms if you perform well. You will be talking Management grammar very soon and will see the difference when you interview for another job later! People have left consulting firms for Banks at a much higher level and some moved to Oil and Gas companies. It is better you 'be' now as you will definitely 'have' later. |
It is a difficult decision to take. Look at the benefits taking the naija job will offer you: 1. You will have more disposable income and acquire more assets 2. Possibility of working overseas (transfer or cross posting) after a period of time 3. interesting job as it is what you want to do. 4. You could get an overseas oil job after some years of experience in the company since you have equally worked overseas too Naija job downsides: 1. Where in the country are you going to be based? You may have a restricted life in some of the Oil producing cities/areas. 2. Do you know the current living conditions in Naija and the pressures/stress associated? Your cash can only settle some! 3. Your family needs to adjust to the life there and may not be happy particularly if they are already used to the UK Benefits of staying in current UK job: 1. Family would be okay and social/environmental conditions of living are better overall 2. You are getting international experience 3. Are you a Citizen or got ILR or close to getting either? If not, you may want to stay and get it for the sake of having options Now my advice: Take the naija job, but do not relocate your family immediately. See if you like the job and be visiting them for sometime (not easy to live separately but a lot people do it now). When you have saved some money and acquired assets, get back to the UK and you will get a good job. Good luck in your decision. |
I really feel for you because it can be a nightmare sticking to a job that takes all your time and prevents you from even having a short period free. But, consider your position very carefully. It is far easier in Nigeria to get a job when you are employed than when you are out of work. What exactly are your plans with the certification that would mean leaving the bank job? I know of some guys who had excellent degrees and stuck up in banks for some years, and at the end, got their dream jobs! You have the capability now to work in Oil companies, industries, communications, consulting e.t.c so there are various options that can get you out of the bank. You should have several options while in a career and weigh them in order to make a decision. My advice: Stick out in the bank for a little while and sneak out for tests! |
