AESA Radar are good but that doesn't make you call other radar rubbish is very wrong. The Gripen doesn't even use an AESA radar (excluding the NG)

I have two 40Leaves note on Electronic warfare.Russian EW platforms took less than 15 pages out of the 80. Could not find much on their EW platforms.

I am also lazy at typing, I prefer writing.

Khibiny: Terror of the destroyers
This relatively small container in the shape of a torpedo is mounted on the wingtips of the aircraft and makes the sky machines invulnerable to all modern means of defence and enemy fighters. After the crew receives missile attack alert, Khibiny comes into action and covers the fighter with radio-electronic protective hood, which prevents the missile from reaching the target and makes it deviate from the course. Khibiny increases the survivability of the aircraft by 25-30 times. According to deputy general director of concern KRET (developer and manufacturer of this EW system) Vladimir Mikheev, all the fighters that Russia lost in Georgia were naked, ie. without the installed EW means, and this fact has caused the loss of the Russian military equipment.
By the way, nowadays Khibiny is being installed on Su-30, Su-34 and Su-35, so the famous April attack in the Black sea on USS Donald Cook by Su-24 bomber jet allegedly using Khibiny complex is nothing but a newspaper hoax. The destroyers buzzing did take place. This EW system can completely neutralise the enemy radar, but Khibiny are not installed on Su-24.

IMHO proper mix of JF17 block 2s & 3s + the Bs at the right quantity is the best way to go

FIRST THE BASICS

The basic idea of ELECTRONIC WARFARE (EW) is to exploit the enemy's electromagnetic emissions in all parts of the electromagnetic spectrum in order to provide intelligence on the enemy's order of battle, intentions and capabilities and to use countermeasures to deny effective use of communications and weapons systems while protecting one's own effective use of the same spectrum.

ELECTRONIC WARFARE (EW) can be classified into 3 basic types


1.Electronic Support Measures (ESM)

Electronic Support Measure is that division of electronic warfare which involves actions taken to search for , intercept, locate, record and analyse radiated electromagnetic energy, for the purpose of exploiting such radiations to support military operations. Thus, ESM is an important source of EW information to carry out electronic countermeasures and electronic, counter- countermeasures. ESM involves, in general, gathering of EW information through Electronic Intelligence (ELINT), Communications Intelligence (COMINT) and ESM receivers.

2.Electronic Counter Measures (ECM)

Electronic Countermeasures are the actions taken to prevent or reduce the enemy's effective use of the electromagnetic spectrum.
Two major actions of ECM are jamming and deception.

I. Jamming

The deliberate radiation, re-radiation, or reflection of electromagnetic energy to impair the use of electronic devices, equipment's or systems is called Jamming

II. Deception

The deliberate radiation, re-radiation, alteration, absorption, or reflection of electromagnetic energy in a manner intended to mislead the enemy in the interpretation or use of information received by his electronic systems is called deception. It is of 2 types.

a. Manipulative

The alteration or simulation of friendly electromagnetic radiations to accomplish deception.

b. Imitative

Introducing radiation into enemy channels which imitates his own emission.

2.Electronic Counter Counter Measures (ECCM)

The actions taken to ensure friendly, effective, use of the electromagnetic spectrum despite the enemy's use of EW are known as ECCM.

ACTIVE / PASSIVE ROLES

The field of EW is discussed in terms of active and passive roles.

Passive EW is the search for and analysis of electromagnetic radiation to determine the existence, source and pertinent characteristics of the enemy's use of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Active EW is the radiation or re-radiation of electromagnetic energy so as to impair the enemy's use of electronic equipment/system, or to mislead the enemy in the interpretation of data received from his electronic systems/devices.

ESM (Passive) and includes

2.COMINT
3.DETECTION
4.DIRECTION FINDING
5.ANALYSIS
6.IDENTIFICATION
7.INTELLIGENCE

ECM (Active) and includes

Let talk about the Khibiny which was used on USS Donald Cook. If the Khibiny really jammed the USS Donald Cook then then AN-ALQ 99 has the capability to do the same on US aegis radar.


In my opinion, if USS Donald Cook was truly jammed by the khibiny, it's not the khibiny that jammed it but it's pod was used to carry a specially made EA (electronic attack module)

.....and again the Russian claimed to have neutralized the Aircraft therefore making it deaf, dumb and blind . I'll go for barrage jamming do such and in this case, the khibiny doesn't seem to be a EW platform capable of doing so. Using barrage jamming means spreading out noise across all frequencies of the equipment used on USS Donald Cook and this means the jamming power won't be as effective when compared to spot jamming.

The su24 was said to have carried onboard just the khibiny pod. That's the standard pod on Russian su33 and such pod is used to perform SEAD(Supprrssion of enemy air defense ) Jamming radar signals and other related blablabla.

There's nothing this pod can do in its standard form that the US AN-ALQ 99 cannot do which means the US Navy could have destroyed the USS Donald Cook if it performs such attack on it's ship with the EA-18 growler.

In my own knowledge on electronic warfare, I'm not sure if khibiny is enough to disable the USS Donald Cook. The Russians have powerful Electronic warfare systems no doubt.

The Russians claimed their Krasuka 4 can fry an aircraft avionics and to me, this means they're adding some EMP capability to their EW platforms.

Conclusion based on my first hand knowledge on electronic warfare:

If the AN/AlQ 99 is capable of jamming air defense radars, the khibiny is capable of jamming the Aegis radar but the possibility of neutralizing the USS Donald Cook completely according to online sources is what I am not sure of.

However, if true then In my opinion, the Russians aircraft that buzzed the US Navy carried a specially made electronic attack module inside the Khibiny's pod.
I mean something like carrying a new different item with a known pod to avoid it being observed.
