When have I ever called you dumb? I think I've asked you before to show me where I specifically insulted you as a person and you have yet to show me.
Do you wish to be friends now? Or why the low tone?

Most theists are familiar with your ways, though.
Christianity EtcRe: 5 Clear Proofs That God Exists: To The Atheists by Tellemall: 10:00pm On May 13, 2016

From much of what I've seen those two categories are often intertwined; as in the rejection of certain scientific concepts seems to often be preceded by lack of understanding of said concepts (the amount of times I've had to explain evolution here on NL to theists who reject it is testament to that). And that lack of understanding probably follows from religion discouraging thorough exploration of those concepts.

For example, when faced with information about the big bang or something, a religious person is very likely to reject it outright due to discomfort & cognitive dissonance exclusively caused by competing religious ideas they hold, whereas a nonreligious, or perhaps very casually religious person, might be more likely to approach the information with curiousity, thus more likely to actually learn about it to the point of understanding.

So it's not like anyone is saying that being religious automatically makes anyone stupid. Religious beliefs just tend to set up psychological structures that prevent people from becoming "intelligent". Perhaps that would explain the correlation.
You.... Why are you being civil today? Have you forgotten to call me dumb and name cases after me because I'm a theist?

Anyway, I suppose you're saying what I'm saying. Rather than looking for means to call theists dumb and unintelligent, I've given you atheists a perspective to stew on. Maybe you guys will understand that intelligence has nothing to do with lack of religion. You, in particular, have been looking down on the intelligence of theists, simply because they do not agree with you. You have tried to call me unintelligent in your past posts, due to certain overbearing tendencies.

For that reason, I will end this post right here.

You are missing the point, I didn't say atheists are smarter than all theists. I said the average atheist is smarter than the average theist. The key word is average and there are major research from very reputable institutions to prove it.
Not even in averages are they.

Given equal exposure it simply boils down to regular demographics of intelligence.

There is the difference between a person who willfully discards a thing they believe to be against their religion and one who doesn't know better.
Christianity EtcRe: 5 Clear Proofs That God Exists: To The Atheists by Tellemall:
SirWere:
Not all atheists argue with Science. And why should we not?? Science, from what we know, is the only thing capable of seperating facts from falsehood; it is one of the main instruments of reason we have.

You say Science STARTED with theist. I say you're wrong. No doubt, very many theists contributed to it; even helped it grow. But tracking the lives of those theists, one can see that they took faith and reason seperately and they were noticeably less religious than their counterparts. Like Immanuel Kant said

"I limit my reason so I may have faith" or something like that smiley
Point is, even the very first scientists were religious.

One thing with religion is that it must be taken with a dose of docility and absolute belief. The same way irreligious people take their disbelief with stubborn inability to see what theists see, so also theists stubbornly see what they want to.

I am yet to see an atheist who just disbeliefs without them dragging science into the mix. Hence science is the true belief of atheists. A theist will try to make you believe what they do, but an atheist will like to make you believe in science. And science is simply not atheism, so why do all the atheist use it as a shield? How about you guys try to reason the absence of a god without science?

Besides, all theists believe in science. Science is a standard attainable to all intelligent beings. No theist ever said that iron floats in water but they agree that it miraculously did in the Bible and still can. Is that the absence of reasoning/intellect?

It's a bit boring to see atheists use science, which everybody is familiar with, to try and sound logical.
And because of that you get atheists who think that atheists are more intellectual than theists. But we all live in this same world of science and have the exact same facts, so why do atheists act like they know it better?

y, each to their beliefs. The end justifies the belief.

It may appear so, because most religious people are unquestioning followers. This is because most of them were born into a religion.

There is no evidence that non religious people are more intelligent than religious ones. Are you trying to tell us that in the larger scientific world, that religious people did nothing? Even Pythagoras was religious.

What you have going for irreligious people is the need to compensate for lack of belief with facts.

As I said earlier, Jehovah's witnesses are the only Christian group who bother staying on their toes in religion.

Where do you get all this fromhuh
As I said, trawling through this thread. And other threads in which atheists vent.

Christians argue with their Bibles, Mohammedans their Koran and atheists with science. Or do you wish to deny that?

Yes, modern science is the work of theists. In fact, it's all because of theists. Most notable works started off in the head of theists.

The average atheist is smarter than the average believer. You do not write an essay backed with scriptures to convince an atheist especially a Nigerian atheist to return to religion and believing in God because they were most likely born believers and grew up in a believing family rather if you really want to convert them, you pray to God to give them grace to understand. If an atheist should counter you and write an essay to prove why there is no God, he will make more sense and present a stronger case. Just pray for them.
The average atheist is NOT smarter than the average believer.

While atheists grease their wheels on disbelief, believers tend to leave it at believing. Only Jehovah's witnesses are greased enough.

Forgive me if I detected a slight hint of condescendion.

Insulting Theists? Lol, dear sir, the insult goes both ways. Theists insult atheists and vice versa. I will admit some atheists sound overly intelligent and overbearing. But that's what you get when you try to tell someone something over and over and over again.

And no, Atheists do not "hog"/ claim intelligence. It's just...... You'd have to search hard to see a dull Atheist.

But eh, what does it matter? You're prolly gonna continue with your misconception anyway.
Condescending? How?

If you trawl through this thread, you'll find insulting Christians and you'll find that all/most of the atheists will claim to be of superior intelligence. Yet most of them were born of theists.

There are dull, extraordinarily dull atheists. Forget the fact that all atheists have a deep belief/faith in science(the religion of disbelief wink ). It would help you guys to know that modern science is the work of many theists of extraordinary intelligence.

The general approach of atheists makes it unpalatable to others who might actually read what is written.

And it is true. Atheism is confused with intellectualism.

If it should be returned, it's still the exact same corrupt people that would pocket it, saint inclusive.

When you were working for your money I guess you worked alone. Therefore, eat alone.

I wonder how in the world a person will take out their ENTIRE salary and give it out to a religious body. How are you expected to survive the month if you didn't have previous savings?

Religious sentiment of this nature is tantamount to pure stupidity.

Your benefactor though... Depends on the exact role played. See why it's good to get things done yourself? Then you aren't obliged to go about donating your salary.

Except if you feel you need to give it to your parents. Then that's your decision to make.

Please, let Chinua Achebe rest in peace. He was among the best, but not the best in Africa. The first black Nobel Prize winner in Literature, Prof. Wole Soyinka remains the greatest African writer, because he excelled in all the genres; plays in drama, essays, critical studies, translations and novels in prose and poetry. Soyinka translated Greek and Yoruba classic works to modern English. The next great writer from Nigeria after Soyinka is from my generation and he is Ben Okri who won the Booker Prize at 32 and no other Nigerian has achieved that literary feat. And what is left for him to win now is the Nobel Prize for Literature. Okri is awesome. I would have been next, but I lost 7 unpublished novels in transit and those novels were written in circumstances that cannot return again.
I'm surprised you remembered Ben Okri. I've forgotten the name of one of his books, but it was beautiful.

You guys forget that we are talking about literature as an art, and using the word 'better' does not capture it.
Depending on the reader, critic or environment the criteria for measuring which writer is better will be entirely different.
Why do humans like putting people in a box by classifying them as better or worse.
We have had a horde of brilliant writers over the past century in the African continent, majority of whom even the OP has not read even if you spend every minute of your life reading.

The question is subjective and can only lead to arguments and counter-arguments.

My two cents though.
Literature is an art, but a well written book will be appreciated by even those who cannot see beauty in words.

We are talking about known works here. And there are works that are better than some others. You can speak of genres differing, but not going as far as to say that no work is better than the other. What are the qualities of a good book? That it can be critiqued implies that there are grades.

Storytellers paint on the canvass of the mind, the better painter will provoke the greater images.

As for other writers, Ngugi wa Thiongo leaves an impression. Go to East Africa, Kenya, and read till you drop with satisfaction. Those guys are good. Also Mda.

For any climate-change policy to work in Nigeria, there needs to be a drastic reduction in the use of household generators.
They are amongst the biggest sources of air pollution, with their toxic fumes contributing to the 'dark' skyline of Lagos.
Provide electricity and watch generator use dwindle.

Green energy is a little too far from Nigeria, likewise solar. The only people able to install solar panels on a whim are the government. And it's rather costly, isn't it?

Climate change is affected by lack of industrial controls (all waste gases, toxic or not are carelessly released into the atmosphere), lack of proper natural gas utilization(really, is flaring the only thing to be done with gas?) and overpopulation. Imagine air that 50 people could comfortably pollute on a certain known area of land being polluted by 50,000 people on the same area of land. There should be more family planning. I digress.

The point is, climate change can only be brought about by awareness, good legislation and *actually* enforcing it in incremental stages. It's easy to go to another continent and see the beautiful means of environmental conservation but it's another thing entirely to babble about it in the Senate and continue as before. There is need to be realistic. Nigeria is eons away from civilization.

FamilyRe: Husband Has Been Having Sex With His Father-In-Law by Tellemall: 3:28pm On May 02, 2016
dasparrow:
Sentiments aside. She said the truth. As long as you choose to criminalize gay people, you are going to send them underground. It is the same problem the black american community are facing in America. Black Americans for the most part detest homosexuals and treat them badly. This gave birth to the down-low culture. In other words, black men who are gay and will go and date women, even marry them and then still have sex behind their backs with fellow men. Some of these black men started infecting these women with all manners of STDs/STIs.

It is common knowledge that once you criminalize people, they go into the closet. They don't stop what they are doing, they just do it in secret. There are many Nigerian men and women who are married to members of the opposite gender but continue to have intimate relationships with members of the same gender. Criminalizing homosexuals will not stop homosexuality. It will only drive it underground, that's a fact.
So having affairs is a peculiar thing to gays because their relationships are criminalized? Balderdash.

The person who began the ramble about this whole "underground gays" didn't even have a reason to bring up her comment, the shaye-something person. The husband didn't cheat because he was gay. He cheated because like every other cheating person he wanted to cheat.

Who knew cheating was strictly for gays because they are unsatisfied with their heterosexual spouses?

If you want to support gays find a better standing ground.
Christianity EtcRe: Putting God First: Modern-Day Idolatry Among Christians Today by Tellemall: 6:35pm On May 01, 2016
iliyande:
Well, believe it or not, the most common warning about sin in Scripture does not deal only with lying, gossip, adultery, stealing, or murder. The most common sin in all of Scripture that we’re told to avoid, reject, and move away from is idolatry.

Idolatry looks completely different today from what it once was. Whereas there was a time when idols were inanimate figures and statues, today they can come in various forms. Idolatry is an issue of the heart and can thus only be broken by a transformation of the heart.

Everything that is not of God raises itself up against God, even in the life of a Christian. So we constantly have idol pop-ups in our lives. We have to cast them down, but they will be there as long as we live here on earth.

Idols are anything that takes God's place in giving us fulfillment, satisfaction, security or significance. Many of the things that people have idolized -- both past and present -- are not necessarily bad things, but good things that take bad positions on our priority tree.

We are taught by the Bible to always put God first in our hearts. Colossians 3:5 says, "Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry."

Here are five modern-day things that we find it hard to admit are actually taking over our lives.

Work

Many people look to work for a sense of significance and security. While there is nothing wrong with work, it can be dangerous when it drives our decision-making to the point of completely ignoring God's ways and desires, or we put it before things that are equally or more deserving of our time.

Success

God wants us to be successful, but He does not desire success to take His place in our hearts. When we pursue success outside of God's will, we will find no satisfaction, but when we choose to surrender to God and His ways, Joshua 1:8 promises that we "...will be prosperous and successful." It's particularly easy to make success an idol when we follow other people's definitions, rather than God's.

Phones

Phones, tablets or whatever shiny piece of kit you carry around with you and can't stop checking every five minutes. If you're giving your electronic device more time and attention than your God and loved ones, something's wrong. You need to check your life again.

Image

In the age of Facebook and Instagram, we can be obsessed with projecting the image of the perfect life, perfect relationship, perfect kids, perfect holidays, perfect friendship group...Just choose your filter and in one click, your life can look like everybody else's dream come true. But the Christian faith is about the joy found in God, more than in ourselves or the things of this world. Let's make sure we're projecting this image to others more than anything else. In amongst all those pictures of yourself and all the great things in your life, are there any pictures of your church or anything that would speak to the world of your faith in God?

Materialism

This is a prevalent problem most especially with younger generations with all the peer pressure. But that's not to say that older generations are free from it, as today's consumerism - not to mention billion-dollar advertising industry - drives us to believe that we need certain objects, possessions and substances to feel happy and content. And with internet shopping and today's global market, there's no end to the things we could buy. Now more than ever we need that fruit of the Spirit, self-control.

Sex

Although sex was designed and created by God, man has maligned and distorted its value and purpose. We can be easily driven by the flesh instead of the word of God, especially in an age when nudity is celebrated over modesty, sexual exploits are boasted over, and our visual culture is awash with provocative images. In this day and age, sex has become an idol that drives us to make small and big decisions that will lead us away from Christ if we're not careful.

Money

Ok so it's not exactly a modern-day temptation only, but the lesson remains the same. There is much value in money, but it is not the most valuable thing. That's why Jesus teaches in Matthew 6:24, "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money."

The biggest mistake when it comes to spotting idolatry is thinking that we cannot idolize good things. In fact, everything that man idolizes is something that is perceived to be good

Do not idolize your pastor
No wonder Christians are poor. If you can't focus on your work, why do you expect your finances to work themselves out? Your business is important, your work is important; that's why you have it. What was that saying of the ants and the sluggard...

The worst Christians are those who sit in a church from morning till night praying and claiming that is satisfaction when they aren't on a pastors salary. The forces working against your progress is your lazy arse.

What's wrong with money? How is it an idol? Show me the man who doesn't wake up to make money and I will show you a corpse.

The only thing worthy of your list are pastors and gadgets.
