LordReed: You left out the theist part. Find the meaning of agnostic theist. That's why I said the AGNOSTIC prefix negates the THEIST suffix. Agnostic theist is simply a person who does NOT believe in a deity but has a leaning towards the deity for other reasons. An Agnostic claims NOT to know, so how can he believe in what he doesn't know? |
Christianity Etc › Re: What Is The Essence Of Atheism? by TenQ: 3:52pm On Dec 18, 2021 |
LordReed: Rocks also lack belief in gods but we don't describe them as atheist because we reserve the term for beings that have our level of cogitation. Goats and dogs do not have our level of cogitation so we don't call them atheists. It is one of the reasons I don't think it is appropriate to say babies are atheists, their level of cogitation is still low. Exactly the point. Only creatures without a reasonable human level of cognition can lack a belief. A human being can 1. Doubt a belief system 2. Disbelief a system A baby cannot even be called an atheist UNTIL his cognitive level becomes reasonable. In other words my friend, atheism is NOT a LACK of belief as you have been misled to think |

Myer: You are not to decide that. These are simply english/grammatical words that have their definitions.
Theism means belief in a deity (god). While its antithesis/opposite is Atheism which means lacking belief in a deity (god).
An atheist might have a belief in science or other philosophies but certainly not a belief in a god. Cos by believing in a god, they are no longer atheists but theists. Why didn't you define theism as possession of a belief rather than just a belief in a deity? The opposite of belief is DOUBT! So that in its proper sense atheists are those who DOUBT the existence of God! Check your English Dictionary: The antonym of belief is either DISBELIEF or DOUBT and not the play of semantics referred to as LACK of BELIEF! |
Christianity Etc › Re: What Is The Essence Of Atheism? by TenQ: 3:30pm On Dec 18, 2021 |
Myer: Disbelieving in a deity is in 2 parts;
1. You can disbelieve a particular god and choose to believe another god. Which is still theism. It is simply conversion from one god to another.
2. You can disbelieve in gods entirely. Which is still atheism. Just the same as lack of belief in a deity.
A state of doubt in a the existence of god is like I'm sure you know called Agnosticism.
Agnostic-atheist or Agnostic-theist is still an agnostic. All here perfectly said: Although I doubt if the core atheist will agree with you that atheism is a state of disbelief. They will rather want to use the vague term of "lack of belief". A disbelief is a logical or mental or emotional rejection of a belief system. In other words, without a belief system, there cannot be a disbelief. A lack of belief is a state in which there is no subject of belief on ground in the first place. This state is possible only in total ignorance. Example: A goat or a dog lacks a belief in any deity. |

Myer: Check the dictionary definitions of the words-Atheist and Atheism in my previous post.
Then you can understand that Atheism is not only about rejection of a belief in god. But most importantly it is simply not believing God exists either by rejection o by lack or information or apostasy. You have stated what atheism isn't. But what then is atheism? I actually have a problem with the definition of atheists as people who lack a belief or absence of a belief in any deity. To me, it's a senseless position for a rational human being to lack a belief about a subject he has taken a position upon. I think the problem is the definition of belief in context of a deity. I submit that the position of atheism itself is a belief irrespective of how you argue against it. |

Currently, she says she wants to go back to her parents house else she will die or commit suicide. The man called her parents, and their advise was that since she is his wife, he should decide if to allow her leave his house to come and see them (parents) or stay in his house that the decision is his as the husband.
At this juncture my friend is confused and dont know what to do again.

Please advise needed. Thanks. You better allow her go |

johnydon22: There are fundamental flaws in your assumptions about morality as held by atheists. You have to first understand that the idea of morality as a God-centered enterprise is majorly an Abrahamic idea, at least in the modern sense. Most cultures developed moral values and ideas without basing these ideas of the authority of God punishing or rewarding certain actions.
So, someone not believing in God is not mutually exclusive with them having firm moral beliefs.
I do not know what you mean by good and evil being products of subatomic interactions, I am hoping you will explain that further
But here is how I will try convincing such a person: I will appeal to their rationality, practicality and curiosity.
1. Rationality: Detonating the nuke serves no purpose to him, so what would it matter to him to detonate it? 2. Practical: He has family members, friends whom I assume he deeply cares about. Why would he want to remove the choice to either live or die from those whom he confesses to love? 3. Curiosity: Assuming that such a person is a nihilist as your post seems to imply, even a nihilist can be curious. We have both seen the scientific wonders, architectural and technological marvels human has been capable of in the last century, wouldn't you like to find out where it is all going? What comes next? Perhaps, you could hold off nuking everyone just yet.
So now OP, assuming this person believes in a God but is determined to nuke everyone, how would you convince them otherwise? The man in question is a nihilist. Everything is cosmic dust. The mad man want everything to reduce to cosmic dust He probably believe as a justification that humans and animals cause to much pain He is simply reducing everything to a state of existence as harmless cosmic dusts. The OP is asking if this man is truly evil and what argument |

Myer: I think it's rather you who simply wants to defend your argument even blindly.
If you're taking the first man to be Adam according to the bible, then it's ok to say he was not an atheist cos he had a direct relationship with God.
But if the bible is not the only source of our history, then it's safe to also assume the first man had no prior knowledge of a god hence would have had no belief in God.
Atheism is simply lack of belief in any deity (god). It has nothing to do with whether you have knowledge of God or not. Atheism simply means you do not believe in the existence of a God.
Atheism is a state that can be as a result of various factors;
1. Lack of any information or knowledge about a god. 2. Rejection of the information about the existence of a god. (Which is your own definition). 3. Apostasy as a result of losing belief in a god. Etc.
So boxing every atheist as the same is more of a misnomer. Atheists would like to define atheism as a lack of belief in a deity BUT actually, it is a rejection of the supremacy of any deity. The lack of information or knowledge about any deity should not be defined as a cause of atheism. This is simply IGNORANCE at its best. Without any information about Santa Claus, there is no opinion, belief or lack of belief I can have about him. As per rejection of the information about the existence of God OR apostasy, they are still both about REJECTION of a Deity! 1. Rejection of the thought of a supreme being (Blocking of ears). Blocking God at an intellectual level 2. Rejection of the authority of the supreme being. (Rebellion). Blocking God at an emotional level. A baby has no opinion about the power of electricity. Therefore, he can't be said to lack a belief or not in electricity. A baby probably doesn't have the intellectual capacity to even understand what electricity is in the first place to form any opinion. An atheist could be likened to a man who never saw the power of electricity BUT was informed that the wires on the pole contained dangerous power that can maim, kill or burn.
The Ordinary Atheist argue the impossibility of ordinary cool, noiseless ordinary metal wires carry such energies. The Rebellious Atheist seek a complete removal or destruction of such energy carrying wires (usually with an alternative). The Agnostic-atheist argue the impossibility of an ordinary cool, noiseless ordinary metal wires carry such energies While still profesing his uncertainty The Agnostic-theist argue the possibility of an ordinary cool, noiseless ordinary metal wires carry such energies While still profesing his uncertainty. It's better to be safe than sorry The Ordinary Theist argue the possibility of ordinary cold, noiseless, ordinary metal wires carry such energies and thus behave appropriately. |

Christianity Etc › Re: What Is The Essence Of Atheism? by TenQ: 6:34pm On Dec 17, 2021 |
LordReed: Hmmm, that is something I never really considered but based on what I know yes their treatment would be different because the bible calls for people to believe not to know. A lot of times we use the word FAITH and BELIEVE synonymously even though they mean different things. Faith is a trust in the integrity of a person. Faith is based on knowing the person on whom you based your trust upon Believing on the other hand is a conclusion or judgement we make based on an incomplete knowledge/evidence about someone or something. The connection between believing and faith with respect to a Personality is RELATIONSHIP! Even when the word Believe is used in the bible, you need to look at the context. Is it a position taken based on a personality or a position based on rationality! LordReed: An Agnostic-theist believes but doesn't claim to know while an Agnostic-atheist doesn't believe or claim to know. From my understanding the Agnostic-theist fulfils the condition of belief so he passes the test. An agnostic-theist doesn't believe anything. He is only being rational. He says "let be join them incase...". Mat 7:21"Not every one that said to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven." Rev 3:15-16: "I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot: I would you were cold or hot. So then because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth." |

LordReed: I don't think one can have a complete understanding of anything nor is it required to form opinions. One requires sufficient understanding to form reasonable opinions though. I have sufficient understanding of the god concept to realise I cannot hold any belief in it while at the same time declare I don't know if gods exists or not. This also means I am open to modifying my opinions if my understanding changes. I agree that one cannot have a complete understanding of everything to come to a position. I think my problem is when your position involves sitting on the fence- agnostics sit on the fence. I don't have any respect for an agnostic-theist for instance. In the army, generals take positions based on incomplete understanding and act on them. They don't sit on the fence in the time of war. Sitting on the fence is nativity of the greatest order especially when danger is involved. Do you think (based on the knowledge of Christianity you know) that God will treat Agnostic-theists differently from full atheists? |

Isn't it more sensible to keep the slate blank until you can truly with understanding be either an ATHEIST or a THEIST. An agnostic-theist in my opinion is not worth anything. He is driven only by feelings and emotions. |

HellVictorinho3: It depends on what you mean by knowledge
Knowledge when considered as an exposure is something that babies have since they're living things.
All living things have knowledge/exposure/awareness/consciousness.
All living things experience certain things ....... Do babies know about electricity? Do babies know that scorpions can sting? Does a baby by instinct know that an electric plate cooker can burn? So it is with God. Babies don't have any information or knowledge to make any decision about God. They have zero expectations about anything. A child's perfect agnosticism is based on total lack of awareness! |
