Protect your integrity and desist from daft threads in the politics section. Witch ko, aje ni. That is why you are still trapped in poverty. When your fellow man is sharply taking charge of his destiny whether through talent or robbing you blind, your lazy ass sits back and claims the person is a wizard. Emancipate yourself from the shackles or ignorance and laziness. It is well with you. If an enigma is too much for you to understand, the least I would expect is for you to discern daft news.

Sorry, you made a big mistake. If your eyes were on his property for you and your child you should have stayed in the marriage. There is something called Jurisdiction, and I have never heard them do those splitting of assets in Nigeria. The man just packs your luggage in a suitcase and leaves it in front of your parents house. You would be lucky if he is responsible enough to take care of yout children. You also were not married in Nigeria, so your union was not legalized in the country. Just move on with your life, Nigeria is a man's world and there is no way you can have accurate records of what he owns. The guy is smart sha.lol.

The troops that are sent to this area should be neither Jos or Hausa/ Fulani tribes. If they focus on sending troops that contain tribes neutral to the area, this should help stop a lot of the crimes. I also think the armed forces needs to be well integrated and have equal representation from all tribes. Because the one we are hearing Fulani herder's being armed to the teeth, even up to bullet proof vest is very suspicious.

Wonders shall never end, Ijaw wetin. I see small Ijaw tribe is trying to boost their population. They jumped from Bayelsa to Lagos. Do they think we have riverine area's or how did they get to Lagos, through the large waves of bar beach? From this assertion is it not right to claim Ijaw as Yoruba? Afterall Yoruba have Ilaje, whose way of life is similar to Ijaw. We can reasonably say Ilaje is the parent tribe of the Ijaw, and they are Yoruba. Hence Yoruba own Bayelsa state? That should be the topic. Wetin join riverine and ocean people together?

No they cant find work, they have been raised to believe Nigeria is their father's bank account or purse. Nigerians should pay for former HOS yearly vacation. When some Nigerian's cannot afford the entrance fee's to beaches. They should give them money to attend one useless meeting, in which they are unable to contribute anything positive to Nigerian lives. They should also get better healthcare than the rubbish system they left behind. When they were in office they did not think they would have to rely on NIGERIAN HEALTHCARE system which they destroyed. They are government officials, all that is owed is pension, and security. The healthcare can be gotten from the local teaching hospitals and they can pay for their own vacations.

Senate rejects N1.2bn budget for upkeep of ex-Heads of State
By Oluwole Josiah

The Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental-Governmental Affairs on Wednesday rejected the N1.2bn proposal by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation for the upkeep of former Heads of State and their deputies.

Chairman of the committee, Senator Smart Adeyemi, said his conscience would not permit him to defend it before the Senate Committee on Appropriation to which he directed the SGF.

A Permanent Secretary at the SGF’s office, Mr. Taiye Haruna, who represented the SGF, Yayale Ahmed, told the committee that the N1.2bn was not captured in the 2011 budget proposals, but that it would be presented to the committee later.

He also said that the sum of N2.2 billion was proposed for the upkeep of the former leaders in 2010, but was also dropped when the budget was being computed.

Adeyemi was visibly angry at the proposal.

He told the SGF, “I will not be able to defend this before the appropriation committee. My conscience will not permit me to do that. I think that these retired Heads of State should be able to take care of their needs, but we are still paying so much in the face of people not being able to eat three square meals a day. It is unfair.

“I cannot understand why we are going to be spending so much money on former Heads of State who presided over the affairs of this country rightly and wrongly when we are growing an army of unemployed youths who are now capable of staging a revolution.

“It is unfair to set aside N2bn for a few people who were part of those who mismanaged this country when there are no jobs, when there are no drugs in the hospitals and there is so much poverty in the land.”

Haruna explained further that N1.2bn was actually meant to cater for the needs of the former leaders which were already in arrears.

He said there were seven living former Heads of State; five former Vice-Presidents, six families of deceased leaders and two families of deceased Vice-Presidents.

He argued that the upkeep was in line with the Act recently passed by the National Assembly on the upkeep of the former Heads of State.

He said a five bedroom housing accommodation was supposed to be built for each of the former leaders in any location of their choice with telephone services. The government is also expected to provide, at least, three vehicles for them and pay the salaries of their personal staff.

The funds will also be used to cater for them whenever they visit Abuja, as well as pay for other courier services required by the former leaders.

Haruna also explained that as soon as the major provisions were made, the annual upkeep would not be more than N250m.

But Adeyemi noted that though the Act had come into force, he stood against it as it did not represent the interest of the people of Nigerians.

According to him, he would continue to oppose the implementation of the Act, hoping that someday the Act would be revisited for a possible repeal or amendment.

3) If he tried what he has in Nigeria he would have been executed or been sitting in jail for a very long time.

Why Nigeria’s unity is still fragile — Obasanjo
By MIKE ODIEGWU
Sunday, 13 Feb 2011

Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo
The former President of Nigeria, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, has raised the alarm that the unity of Nigeria remained fragile blaming the development on those he called “priests and barons of division.”

He said it was shameful that those promoting disunity and fanning embers of discord in the country had benefitted immensely from all privileges obtainable in Nigeria.

Obasanjo spoke in Minna, Niger State, on Saturday during the second term campaign inauguration of the Governor of the state, Dr. Babangida Aliyu, which was organised by the state Peoples Democratic Party.

President Goodluck Jonathan and his deputy, Namadi Sambo, were represented at the event by the Minister of Information, Mr Labaran Maku, in the event which attracted many dignitaries such as the Governors of Kwara, Dr. Bukola Saraki; Kaduna, Patrick Yakowa; and Zamfara states, Alhaji Mamud Shinkafi.

The inauguration, which was witnessed by hordes of party supporters at the Trade Fair Complex, had in attendance some elder statesmen such as the former Vice-President, Chief Alex Ekwueme, Ambassador Maitama Sule and Chief Ebenezer Babatope.

Former dictator, General Ibrahim Babangida, (retd.) who was supposed to be the chief host, however, sent his son, Mohammed, to represent him.

Obasanjo said instead of leveraging on their educational and privileged backgrounds to inform the less privileged on importance of peace and tranquility in the country, some politicians had continuously promoted divisive tendencies for their selfish interests.

He said, “I feel a little bit apprehensive because those of us who have enjoyed the greatest benefits in this country; the best that this country can give to us in terms of education, training, appointment and election; should be the ones to tell, educate and inform our less privileged brothers and sisters.

“But what are we doing? Some of us who have enjoyed all these privileges have now become priests and barons of division either on ethnic, religious, geographical or linguistic basis.

“What a shame! I believe that all of us, who got their feet in that special position of having education having benefited from all that this country can give to us in appointments, should do everything to enhance the unity, tranquility and the solidarity of this country.”

Obasanjo added that nobody should blame God if Nigeria failed as a country noting that nature had put Nigeria on the pathway of greatness.

He said he was better off in the Republic of Nigeria than he would have been in the Republic of Oduduwa insisting that unity and tolerance were the only fabric binding the country together.

PoliticsPdp Defies Court Order; Chime And Orji Are Still Party Candidates by TewMuch(op): 1:25pm On Feb 12, 2011
The Peoples Democratic Party on Friday defied subsisting court orders and presented flags to Enugu State governor, Mr. Sullivan Chime, and his Abia State counterpart, Theodore Orji as the governorship candidates of the party in their respective states.

The party’s acting National Chairman, Haliru Bello, presented Chime and Orji with the flags at the PDP South-East campaign at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu. President Goodluck Jonathan and party stalwarts were at the gathering.

The two other PDP governors in the zone, Martin Elechi (Ebonyi) and Ikedi Ohakim (Imo) were also presented with flags as the governorship candidates of the party in their respective states.

There was, however, a brawl when some Anambra PDP leaders tried to stop the suspended National Vice-Chairman, South-East, Olisa Metu, who was ousted by the court, from presiding at the event.

Security men, however, bundled one of the protesting leaders into a patrol van while Metu moved to preside over affairs at the event.

Jonathan promised the people of the South-East a transparent government that would take care of their interests and Nigerians irrespective of language, tribe and religion.

Noting that the zone is home for all, he said Nigerians must have an equal opportunity and would not be discriminated against wherever they wished to do business.

He said, “We are here not to campaign, but to greet my people. This is the first zone we visited and the traditional rulers from the whole zone came to receive us.

“I thank APGA and other political parties that have adopted us. We are not campaigning. We are here to tell them what we stand for. We have several security challenges in the country. It looks like a global trend, acts of terrorism and extensive militancy.

“It is all over the world. May be it is a trend of history. In Nigeria too, we are having a little of it. We are assuring the people of the South-East that this kidnapping that does not allow business people to move about must be stopped.

“Business people are not stagnant. Business people must be mobile. We are saying that the interruption of businesses must come to an end.

“This is an industrial area. Let me assure you of the government’s commitment. You know that about N500bn has been released to enable people to get loans since banks are finding it difficult to grant such.”

He said that his administration was committed to power because it was vital to wealth creation, noting that in Enugu, the Federal Government had conducted a survey and signed a contract to establish coal to power plant.

[B]However, a former vice-president, Chief Alex Ekwueme, warned the PDP to be cautious about its campaign in the South-West zone, saying, “From the outset, we have never had it so good in the South-West. We scored zero per cent in 1999 and won controversially in 2003.[B]”

Reps return FOI bill to committee for public debate
By John Ameh, Abuja
Friday, 11 Feb 2011

The House of Representatives on Thursday returned the Freedom of Information Bill to its Joint Committee on Information and Justice for fresh public hearing.

The House, in a surprise majority voice vote, endorsed a motion to return the bill to the committee.

The Speaker of the House, Mr. Dimeji Bankole, who presided over the session, gave the committee seven days to conduct the public hearing and submit a report to the House for consideration.

The Chairman of House Committee on Rules and Business, Mr. Ita Enang, who sponsored the motion along with 20 other lawmakers, said that the decision to revisit the bill was in the “public interest.”

The development came after the document had spent over three years in the Committee of the Whole, where it was last committed to on November 14, 2007.

In Committee of the Whole, all members of the House dissolve into a single committee to consider and approve or disapprove reports on bills and other reports laid before the legislature.

The FOI was committed to the Committee of the Whole in 2007 after a public hearing had been conducted on it and stakeholders made the recommendations in the bill in its current form.

But efforts to consider recommendations since 2007 had always failed, as most lawmakers poised to “kill” it.

The opponents of the bill claimed that it gave too much powers to the media to expose public officials and pry into their private lives.

In a bid to rescue the bill in the light of the opposition, attempts were made in 2010 to rescind the earlier decision to commit it to the Committee of the Whole without success.

In 2010, efforts to make progress on the bill hit a brick wall about seven times.

However, on Thursday, the motion to rescind the earlier decision and re-commit the bill to the joint committee made a surprise smooth sail in the House.

The National Assembly (2003 to 2007 set) had passed the first version of the FOI bill but former President Olusegun Obasanjo withheld his assent till he left office in May 2007.

The bill was reintroduced when the current legislature was inaugurated in 2007.

This was in line with the legislative rule, which requires that a bill that fails during a tenure can only be revisited in another tenure.

Wherever this happens, such a bill begins its journey afresh by going through rigorous legislative procedures.
