Don't know what to say about the bad-belle HOD.
Sometimes it helps to see things from another man's point of view. What would you do if you were a HOD of a department with just barely enough staff strength and one of your brightest brains tells you he wants to leave? Of course you'll try your best to hang on to him.

I'm not sticking my neck out to completely exonerate the HOD but there often is much more to any story than first meets the eye.

Nigerians have become used to socialism because military governments of the 1960s and 70s, concerned about retaining power, presented an image of a big father that was ready to provide everything Nigerians wanted, for free. The military governments sucked oil out of the Niger Delta and used the money to take over privately owned schools, over employ people into the civil service and provide free infrastructure. The resultsad1)Niger-Delta crisis (2) Nigerians who don't believe in paying taxes (3) Nigerians who believe father government must control everything and provide everything for free or at unsustainable prices.
Sorry, many of us DO pay taxes. I don't think there's any one who can argue that we taxpayers get value for our money.
Heh. As much as one day I'd like to serve my people, they seem to be a very ornery lot, difficult to govern.

I salute Fashola for dragging his people to the 21st century, even over the protests of many who would prefer to remain in the stone age.

Forward ever, backwards never.
You're dangerously close to stating that Fashola is perfect. That just doesn't make sense. People have the right to protest unreasonable decisions if they negatively impact their lifestyle.

I see some merit in the arguments by these folks living in Lekki. The crux of their argument is that existing roads should not be tolled by the LCC and Lagos State Government and that makes perfect sense to me. Setting up nigh perpetual toll gates for existing roads after cosmetic upgrades does not make sense.

Let them toll only new roads constructed by the LCC. If there must be toll gates on the existing road, they MUST provide evidence that costs incurred in revamping the existing roads runs were very high.

Source: Zero Hedge

While the capital markets may be cheering that in the past month 120,000 people supposedly found jobs, even if these were largely temporary or part-time just in time for the year end shopping sprees, we wonder how they will react when learning that according to the latest update from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), some 423,000 Americans found their way to minimum way subsistence, courtesy of Food Stamp handouts from Uncle Sam. Since the start of the Second Great Depression, food stamp participation has increased by 18.7 million, and is now at an all time higher 46.3 million. All Bush's fault, or something. At least the chart below appears to be plateauing,  Actually, sorry, no isn't.

https://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/images/user5/imageroot/2011/12/Foodstamps%20Sept.jpg
The only thing i can glean from your bar chart is that the slope is much less steep these days.

Welcome to Nairaland, newbie. I take it you weren't around when Beaf LIVED for the moments when he could gleefully report that innocent policemen were being gunned down by the MEND millitants. You ought to have seen him capering with joy when MEND millitants sailed over to Atlas Cove and gunned down innocent civillians as well as a Christian Naval officer who left behind a wife and two young kids (both less than 10 years old).

These days, he's so strident in his condemnation for the Boko Haram terrorists that one would never think that he was once the biggest fan of the bloodthirsty MEND terrorists.

I m very surprised at the replies here. Subsidy ought to go. There is no way Nigeria should keep paying trillions to subsidize fuel alone while a few people profit from it. I am with the president on this one. It just does not make sense. This beggarly attitude of people has to stop. Blaming govt for everything. . . .Hoping Govt does this . . .Govt does that. Govt go marry wife for you still teach you how to yansh am.

Govt has no business doing business. . . How can a govt be importing fuel and you people say it should continue. . . . . . Everyone Insulting the President here is an enemy of the State and should be disregarded . . . . . You are all Probably ASUU Lecturers who have nothing else to do than to sit here and curse GEJ while waiting for Govt handouts.

Make Govt subsidize Garri too, and subsidize peak milk and sugar for you. That time you go know say you be Nigerian. . . . Make una go protest. . . . I dey my house. Talk is still cheap The last time I checked
The masses who pay N65 per litre are also beneficiaries of the subsidy. If there is any cartel diverting the money, it is the duty of the FG and GEJ to disrupt them and bring them all to book.

I shudder when i hear people like you say we are 'begging the government' or 'waiting for handouts'. If you are still living with your mummy and daddy let us know. Some of us here actually pay a large sum of money as taxes to the federal and state governments. In return we are given bad roads, total insecurity, lawless policemen, irregular electricity and pipe borne water.

If you are jobless enough to see it as 'begging', that's your problem. Some of us who are not collecting pocket money from mummy and daddy are actually seriously owed by the Federal government.

PS: Isn't it hilarious that the same FG that wants to remove fuel subsidy to 'fund infrastructure' is the FG that is hell bent on imposing road taxes and toll gates on our highways to collect money for the same 'infrastructure'?

They keep quoting useless theories for me, I've been waiting for someone to invoke one of his policies that made him bad, NONE and I repeat NONE, yet he's the worst terrible president. That's how he claimed Obama was responsible for the U.S. downgrade, first in the history of America (LIES). Also claim he's responsible for Occupy Wall Street, who doesn't know what Obama's stand has always been about Wall Street and how he has urged congress to act quickly about the economy? At least, I know I'm no expert but Obama has made few mistakes but that man has tried with all the resistance he keeps getting from Boehner and his colleagues in Congress.
I concluded the guy was a jester after he started blaming Obama for the S&P downgrade.

You need not concern yourself with this clown. The OP and Chyz are known terrorist lovers and peddlers of conspiracy theories who are extremely livid at all the terrorists Obama has helped put in the ground - Including Osama bin laden.

They'll never see anything good in Obama.

Anyone seen the galaxy s2 LTE??

Default processor clock speed is 1.5ghz same as the sensation plus 1gb of ram,
All that processing speed just to make Android OS less laggy.
Can anyone tell me of any application in the app market that needs (or makes use of ) all this CPU power? Or are Android phone manufacturers just using clock speeds and RAM size as a marketing tool?

Dishing out the spicy truth, a second helping wouldn't do much wrong,

Why APPLE wins to these suckers: GRAPHICS & SIRI
The numbers don't lie; the category with the most turnover on the App Store and the Android Market is the 'Games' category. Stop whining just because the iPhone 4S (and iPad 2) have better GPUs than any Android phone ever made.

Anyway, just in case you were inebriated while you were reading my previous post, I mentioned games like Football Manager that aren't on Android. That has nothing to do with 'graphics' and everything to do with second rate developer support. Apple wins to 'suckers' like me because they have a better app ecosystem at the moment.

Here's a challenge I usually hand out to Android specs freaks. You folks always crow on and on about CPU clock speeds. Can you name just 2 apps that really need (or make use of ) all that horsepower you're always crowing about apart from games?

@ tex, the thing is this: i dont know about iphone users in jand or yankee, i dont know about the few, hopefully including u, nigerians who can actually afford to use an iphone normally, BUT a large number of our wannabe fanboys cannot afford to buy 3 apps on their iphone!!!.

i see this mentality replicated everywhere and its annoying. go to the gaming section and see them flame and go on and on about their beloved ps3 and xbox. people who rely on pirated cd from alaba. how many of them have ever or will ever buy a 60 dollar game cd?

ditto with this una iphone. of all the wanksters on NL, how many could or would ever buy infinity blade or fifa 12?
u jailbreak, install cydia, look for cracked dumps and pirated stuff all over, then come here to crow about the fone. when u dont even know or experience what the ecosystem truly is like at all,

most if not all of ya dont even stay in the walled garden, yet u tell people the garden is the best ever.

cos if u noticed, nobody is complaining that the fone is bad, or hardware is wack or performance poor. the complaint was about everyday useability from the perspective of a noob. once he joins the bandwagon naw and jailbreaks etc, he too will start singing the same tune
I actually buy a lot of my apps, trust me. At this moment, I have $30 in my itunes account. I bought FIFA 12 for about $7.

Secondly, as far as 'usability' is concerned, the iPhone wins hands down over Android OS. Don't mistake 'using your music library as a ringtone' with UI intuitiveness. They don't mean the same thing. There's a reason why the iPhone sells far more than any other phone out there.

@ bluetooth, u do realise that there is a difference in the core functionality of a device and having to go the extra mile to extend it?

the apple ecosystem is the most enclosed system by default in the world.  to the average newbie or even long term user in a world where things like bluetooth file sharing and music transfer is sine qua non it IS unnerving.

and as a long term user of non-mainstream tech products, i will tell u straight up that nobody wants to have to jump through hoops to do on their new product, what they could do with ease on the platform from which they are coming from.   try converting a windows noob to linux and see what im talking about.

and YES it is wrong, and silly to have to jailbreak, install all manner of underG apps and support piracy and what nots just to transfer a goddamn mp3 via bluetooth.
every other fone, even blackberries with their absolutely awful bluetooth functions does that.  without the piracy community and the hackers all you fanboys could not use the Iphone, especially all u nairaland iphone owners.   the one thing u all excel at and learn is how to circumvent apple's restrictions.
yet here u are bitching on someone who is saying it as it is.

that  said, the OP and even the chap u exchanging words with never said anything to warrant your outburst, we understand u are a FANBOY,  but thats no reason to be uncouth.
Maybe most of us don't really care about bluetooth file transfer?
The last time i really really was into bluetooth file transfer (music, ringtones and photos), I was still in University and the year was still 2003.

What people like you will NEVER understand is that lots of us can see the big picture. It's all about the user experience. It's all very well for someone to ramble on about 'closed ecosystem' and 'walled garden' but at the end of the day it boils down to what the user experience is all about.

At this moment I can whip out Street Fighter 4 or Football manager 2012 on my iOS devices. They don't exist on Android. No amount of 'openness' will put them there. Developers prefer iOS, there are lots more apps on iOS.

There are always pros and cons to everything. Having to sync to copy stuff is still annoying as hell. But on the plus side, you get a smooth, well supported OS with great hardware and the most vibrant app store selection of all the platforms.

By your definition the PS3, Xbox 360, PSP, DS, 3DS etc are all 'walled gardens' and 'closed ecosystems', are totally evil and must be avoided. Good luck with that grin

anonimi:
USA, Britain and a few Scandinavian countries are also "blessed" with oil & gas natural resources. They give no subsidy but allow private investors do their business while government creates the enabling environment and monitors/controls just as is done with Nigeria's GSM since 2001. Evidence to support this governance model abound even in Nigeria. Moreover many able-bodied Nigerians are lining up and going to prayer sessions/vigils for visas to these countries where they have no fuel subsidy- WHY huh
One decade after we can see the difference with telecommunication service compared to NITEL that was on subsidy life-support without results. The same is true for Nigeria Airways. It is in the interest of everyone, particularly the masses to remove fuel subisdy.
The subsidy is/was a stop-gap measure to reduce the financial burden on the masses from the high landing costs of imported refined petroleum. Ergo, the subsidies should only be removed AFTER the existing refineries have been revamped and new ones built to ensure pump price still remains affordable.

It costs approx $5 billion to build a refinery. GEJ should have used our $20 billion ECA cash to build 4 refineries instead of dashing it out to the greedy state Govs.
