@justcool The true patriots are those who constantly strive to improve their country. I am yet to see any sign of what seeklove and ifygurl have done to improve this country, so holding them up as a shining example of Nigerian patriotism is seriously flawed. justcool:That's simplistic logic at work. Nigeria's rot starts from the people, not neccessarily with the government alone. If in 99% of the threads concerning 419 on Nairaland most respondents offer tacit support for the crime, what has the Government to do with that? There's a thread on paying taxes in this Politics section. over 70% of the people replying insisted they would not pay taxes. So who's the traitor? The Government or the individuals refusing to pay taxes? I really do not want to argue with you. But please can someone show me where in this quote below is evidence that Kobojunkie hates Nigeria Kobojunkie:We ARE living with mediocrity! Take a look at the NEPA going on strike thread and see the resignation Nigerians have when it comes to power problems. Is the thorough exasperation Nigerians have for our roads and utilities conveyed in the gist ifygurl gets from her dad? I live and work in Nigeria. I've travelled overseas several times but i've always been glad to come back to my country. But i know what happens here, i know the hardship people go through here in this country and noone living outside the country is gonna tell me that things are perfect here. |
landis:You'd prefer he was martyred by your idol Mugabe, wouldn't you? When you go home and eat today, kindly spare a thought for the millions of zimbabweans suffering today. But you won't will you? They are merely cannon fodder in between frequent assaults on the 'west'. the Khmer Rouge would have LOVED someone like you. Osama would kill for someone like you who wouldn't let something as trivial as human suffering get in the way of a few more smilies on Nairaland. |
landis:Cuba. landis:The african quite possibly may not have been an EU citizen. I know for sure that Eu citizens are preferred when it comes to giving Jobs. I cannot say for sure, because your example ('a study') is pretty vague. landis:Isn't this irony? We rail about that we're being given a bad name, yet here you are tagging asians as 'fraudsters'. landis:You expect? Zanu PF isn't working with MDC. They are working on MDC with fists and sticks and boots. A true test of patriotism is to be moved with pity for the starving ranks in your population. A fondness for power at the expense of your people is a great betrayal. landis:House slave and farm slave? in the US? Please tell all. Ironic, isn't it, that we talk about slavery while in our country it's perfectly acceptable to beat Ekaette your housegirl with whips and brooms. At least it's a crime in the US to beat you househelps. landis:Of course sanctions haven't worked, except as a means for Mugabe to appeal to evil people like yourself. Democracy was supposed to be the way out. Look how it turned out. I've long since demanded an explanation from you. If you insist that the MDC is a stooge of the west, are you claiming that more than 50% of Zimbabweans are stooges? |
The Nigerian commentator should be shot. When he went rhapsodizing about 'ballistic missiles' after Uche scored, i felt like curling up into a ball for the shame of it ![]() |
Not even the Spain - Italy tie lived up to expectations. Seems the Euros are fizzling out in terms of excitement. Where are the goals, man?!! |
Nigerians go to the market expecting to be cheated. We watch closely as the rice seller measures each cup of rice, or as the butcher cuts up wach portion of meat. Why? It's simply because we've heard enough stories about these people and their fraudulent behaviour that we simply do not trust them to default to honesty. The above example underlines the hypocrisy in us today. Many Nigerians are distrusted around the world because of the activities of some bad eggs. The 419ers, the touts, the hooligans. . .name 'em all. Yet we're here claiming this same distrust stems from 'jealously' and 'envy'. Stereotypes like these can only be vanquished by a conscious effort at image laundering. But so far we lack the willpower to take this bold step. In every article discussion 419 on Nairaland, more than 50% of the respondents are expressing tacit support for 419 and online fraud. That's a bad sign. It's not a good tactic to say that 'Nigerians aren't the only ones involved in online fraud'. That may be true, but we've become the poster child of 419, the face behind online crime. We've gotten into this mess and now we've got to dig ourselves out. Turkey fans and Liverpool fans aren't the only group of football fans that are wont to be violent. Tell that to the police that trot out whenever Turkey plays any match in Europe. You may not be the only ones doing the bad deeds, but once you're the face behind the stereotype. . . |
'Scrabbed'?! and you call yourself a graduate. . .you ought to be posted to a remote primary school. at least there you can avail yourself of their copies of 'Queen Primer' ![]() |
superman:*sigh* Superman, please work on your spelling. @Darfur if only you spent less time on anti-western rhetoric and more on the problems in Africa you'd be a better man for it. You started well. You once spent time drawing attention to the issues in Darfur. What happened to you? We spend so little time on solutions to our problems, yet we froth at the mouth when outsiders attempt to intervene. I don't give a damn whether BBC or CNN shows villages in zimbabwe. What images are shown on AIT or NTA? Did you hear from AIT or NTA that a loaf of bread in Zimbabwe is not 40 million zimbabwean dollars? When last did NTA tell you about the astronomical inflation rate? |
@landis i was going to write a stinging rejoinder, but someone already beat me to it. Sagamite:It isn't about the starving people in Zimbabwe for you. You don't care a whit about the suffering people. You happily glossed over posts with quotes like 'Zimbabweans eat raw meal because they are too weak to process them' or 'The US donated 225000 tonnes of grain'. No. It's much more than that. All you people care about is another attack against the 'evil west'. The starving millions in Zimbabwe, Darfur etc mean NOTHING to you guys. If that isn't the evil you guys preach about, i don't know what is. As for those who keep talking about the coverage of Zimbabwe in the western media, we should all be ashamed that the black race has once again proven itself to be careless of it's fellow man. Where is the furore in African media? What's Thabo Mbeki and the SADF doing cosying up to this tyrant? |
arsenal4va:Sorry. there's no GTA 4 for Ps2. You'll need a PS3 or an Xbox 360 |
Vowiski You're kinda amusing. Stop telling us what we already know; MGS 4 is a great game. You claimed you've already pre-ordered the game. Now tell us YOUR experiences with the game. I've ot the sneaky feeling that you may not actually own a PS3 after all ![]() |
@Niga_luva it's a pity you've decided to invoke the 'i've got no time' excuse to get out of the hole you dug for yourself. The issue isn't with me castigating America for its 'leecherous ways'. It's you who stated that i'm always rising to the defence of the US. The onus is on you as the accuser to provide proof. i can't say i blame you. You live in a country where the onus of proof is on the accused, so it makes sense that you've been warped by these forces. |
@Niga_luva So you've finally thrown down the gauntlet. Good. Now please post what i said on those threads so we can see who's backward mentally. After doing that, kindly append what you've ever done to make Nigeria a better place. i'm waiting. i've taken up your challenge. please don't fail me. |
@Niga_luva I'm often involved in arguments on 'american malarkey' because that's where people here tend to peddle untruths here. A constant pattern to my arguments is the use of logic and facts to carry my case. It's a sad truth that while anti-americanism is on the rise in Nairaland, the number of people who bother to check their articles for the rudiments of truth, fact and logic. It's cool and ok to hate the west. hell, that's freedom of expression. You can even despise Israel too. It's your choice. But i'll always snigger when someone brings a mail from a random conspiracy theorist side claiming Isreal exploded a 'novel nuclear fusion device' or that the US tried to fly nuclear bombs all the way to Iran to nuke Iranians with ageing subsonic bombers. back to the topic. If you really love your fellow blacks, you'll stay away from Mugabe's corner. ![]() |
@lungwun the xbox 360 doesn't use hd-dvds for games @vowiski MGS 4 isn't 50gb. it uses the two layers on the BluRay disc, yes, and each side = 25GB. It doesn't neccessarily mean it uses both sides to a full. Besides, it's far better and easier to change dvds in a 4 disc set than to wait for a 3 minute install between each act in MGS 4. Not to talk of the initial install period before playing the game. Woe betide you if your HDD is full ![]() Storage space is not equal to better graphics. |
@Sky Blue You don't live in Nigeria, do you? I mean, it's curious that you casually allow that the law could easily be abused by policemen. If you were on the receiving end of any attempted extortion, you'd see that paying N250000 when you're innocent is pretty galling. At least in the UK they have surveillance cameras or tickets that are physcially issued. Don't get me wrong; i'm all for public decency. I even had cause to dwell on this matter 2 days ago when i spent three hours in hold up because of drivers illegally forming a third lane, blockin goff part of the incoming traffic. I've voted for the ban on spraying money during weddings and a total ban on street parties. But i'm not keen on any system that can be abused easily. At least with harsh fines (not the draconian ones) the deterrence is still in place with the added benefit of having a not-too-high opportunity cost if you're hit by these lawless policemen. |
@Niga_luva Why are your ilk always racist? Since when does opposition to Mugabe and Zanu PF become synonymous with being a white apologist? Better still, it's confirmed that the majority of Zimbabweans voted against Zanu PF in the last elections. So what you guys are saying is that more than 50% of voting age Zimbabweans are western apologists, eh? |
@landis where exactly did you get the idea that it was western support that made the white farmers successful? The black farmers would NEVER have been a success story because Mugabe never gave them a chance. He threw out the white farmers, yes, but instead of placing the people who had worked on those farms under the whites a chance as owners, he merely re-allocated the land back to his cronies and millitary veterans as a reward for years of loyal service. These people knew NOTHING about mechanized farming. What happened to Zimbabwean graduates of agriculture? why were these people not given a chance? Clothing is vastly different from eating. Not even Gandhi would have said 'let india starve'. and starvation is what is facing Zimbabweans now. Why do you think many ran to South Africa? There's something immoral and evil about someone sitting in Nigeria where he can afford to buy hundreds of loaves of bread and yet he's exhorting a leader that has made it difficult for ordinary Zimbabweans to buy a loaf of bread. It's easy to sit content in Nigeria and remain callously casual about suffering in Zimbabwe. |
@landis I don't know where you got the idea that Mugabe represents the Black Race. But it's a crazy assumption. You said Point: Mugabe is old and over stay his welcome. We don't need CNN/US/UK to tell us this. But the process to ease him out must not bring suffering to his people. Are you kidding me? His people are already suffering untold hardship. And we DO need the western media to tell us what's going on; how many NTA correspondents are there in zimbabwe? How many times has NTA showed you the happenings in that country? zimbabwe was once the food basket of eastern africa. Now they cannot even feed themselves. |
From the Article Our correspondent says thousands of Nigerians live all over Sierra Leone, many running shops in business district of the capital, Freetown. But many Sierra Leoneans regard them with suspicion as they believe they are involved in crime, especially drug dealing or con tricks - known as 419 scams, he says. The crux of the matter right there. Criminality and corruption is institutionalized in this country, naturally Nigerians go out there and replicate what they find to be acceptable in their own country. |
There is no hope for Africa. Because if people here can express support for a stubborn, illogical dictator who has brought nothing but death, devastation and derision to his country, it shows how reluctant we are for a positive change. neither Mugabe or you misguided fellows here can prove that his opponents are 'western stooges'. But we can all see without doubt how this maniac has brought ruin to his once prospering country. And we wonder how people can praise Abacha and Adedibu. See ordinary Nigerians praising Mugabe. Pathetic. |
folahann:It hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it will NEVER happen. Uruguay once was a football powerhouse. they're anonymous today. Once African countries can successfully separate politics from football, we'll improve. hopefully ![]() |
Sky Blue:a large percentage of people driving one-way isn't how you painting it as taking another road during hold-up. it could be something as easy as driving down a road that was improperly marked or with the one-way marker removed. You think claiming innocence here will buy you any relief from lastma then? A friend of mine came into lagos from the Uk and fell victim to this. He's spent three years away in the UK. He had to shell out 30 pounds to go scot free. I myself have been in a car in Benin that fell into this kind of trap. We entered a road only for police to jump out claiming the road was 'one-way' we had to part with N5000 before going on. There's potential for abuse. The more the fine, the higher the bribe the Police office knows he can demand for. Finally: Previously, when you're arrested for frivolous reasons like that you could do the right thing and insist on going to the station to pay the fine. at least then the official fine would be only a few thousand more than the amount being extorted, but you'd have the pleasure of not allowing one greedy policeman to eat your cash. now, that strategy is clearly not an option. Cue in policemen demanding for N50000 bribe or else you face paying N250000 officially. |
If you guys insist that Jesus Christ is the only way to heaven, then it means that 1. Every Muslim, no matter how pious is ending up in Hell 2. Every African that died before the first missionary arrived is going to Hell 3. Ditto every continent before the Good news got to them. |
@olabowale There's apparently a Muslim section in Nairaland now. It clearly states that it's solely for muslims 'even the moderators are muslims' as it proudly proclaims. So why are you, a Muslim, involving yourself in a debate on bible verses? |
Can someone here actually review Firefox 3. Some open-source activists y'all are ![]() just kidding sha, but i'd like to see how much mileage someone in Nigeria has actually had with it. No internet connection in my place unfortunately, so i can't try it myself. |
Abi o! There's no room for elitist thinking here. We should welcome the Angolas, the Irans etc. They could dominate one day. @davidiff Kindly modify your original post with a disclaimer so people like with an over-inflated sense of importance can contribute. It's not your call to pick on onyinye. |
vowiski:Supply issues + consumers waiting for months for the MGS Bundle + People buying PS3 purely as a BluRay player = PS3 temporarily outselling the Wii for just one week. Read the part i quoted in Bold. ![]() Nice try, anyway. |
Infoseye:Correction #1 - People like these #2 - Gosh. The initial post merely referred to an article on Gamespot.com. The article was written by professional journalists with demonstrably higher intelligence than you have. My intent is to highlight the lack of difference in gaming entertainment from both consoles, and to show financially challenged gamers that the Xbox 360 (which is approx N20000 cheaper than the PS3 in Nigeria) is a viable alternative to Sony's hype machine. If you consider this thread to be crap, you might want to take a look at your posts where you shamelessly try to sell off tethered GPRS as 'free internet'. All that for a lousy N1000. I was right. You ARE a child. |
This has been a feature the Xbox 360 has supported from Day 1. Now they add it one year later. . . ![]() |
@Skyblue My point is a stiff fine worked without being overly draconian. Singapore is clean, yes, but they could have achieved the same result by beheading anyone found guilty of dumping gum on the roads. A recent bill in the Senate to arm the National Civil Defense corps was narrowly shot down. While many senators followed your school of thought that more armed deterrent would serve to reduce crime, Many others were rightly concerned at the thought of arming poorly trained recruits of unknown mental stability and sending them out on the streets. |
Implementation is everything. We heard this same song and dance about Sharia law being a way to keep crime in check - until the first Christian was flogged ![]() You can be fined up to $500 for throwing chewed gum in the streets of Singapore. Not $5000. There's a difference between stiff fines and draconian fines. |
