Yeah, i know ubuntu's pretty cool. unfortunately, ubuntu only runs on x86 processor architecture. the ps3 uses a Power PC based Cell Processor. Only distros like Fedora Core 5 and Yellow Dog Linux are specifically written for POwer PC. Crazy thing i hear is if you install linux on ps3, it looks like shyte on SD Tvs cos of the native 640 x 480 resolution of SD Tvs. As for the ps3, after the initial buzz, i've decided my xbox 360 suits me just fine. as such, i'll be selling the machine for perhaps 100 - 110k. Any cries of protest? The PS3 still costs 600 dollars and is still pretty scarce in the open market in yankee. @dmz Th e130k quote i gave u for the CRT HDTV is the price in PH. It's being sold in PH for that price, so i guess lagos price should be around 110-120K? makes a nice alternative to other HDTV alternatives. 21 inches? Jeez, that's pretty small. on the plus side, i'm sorry for nigerians who decide to go all out and buy the ps3 and 360. they'll soon see that SDTV doesn't do their next gen consoles any justice. try play GOW on a HDTV to see what i mean, or u can download the HD trailer from microsoft to see it running at 720p. Don't be a wet blanket! gimme the GOW. Remember, i know where u live, |
yeah well I'VE GOTTEN MY 60GB PS3!!!! So that means i've got my 360 and the PS3. however, i think i'll sell it cos i'm not equipped to run both uber consoles at the same time, in the hacking spirit i'm known for, i'd like to install linux and several linux based emulators onm it, as well as a media player application to handle divx and vcds. then i'll sell. any interested buyers? @dmz the 32 inch samsung cost me 220k in PH, complete with wall mount. it's the samsung la32r71b (or la32r17b) model, and it works pretty good with the 360. for cheaper HDTV gaming, samsung slimfit tv (34 inch model) costs about 130k here (it's a CRT HDTV) and supports 480p, 576p and 1080i. From what i hear, 1080i should deliver the same impact as 720p for the 360. should be cheaper if you can buy overseas. as always, i promote www.orderbay.com for that kinda shopping. |
mamaput:sorry to break it to you, but the oriental 'enemies' the USA fought in world war 2 and vietnam were japanese and vietnamese respectively. calling all orientals 'chinese' shows how undeveloped your mind really is. Sista:Dumb because we aren't responsible for the sins of our fathers. and there's no single living american that was alive when all the indian wars and atrocities happened. Keep talking about the past. trace your family tree and see if any on was a murderer or had ever killed a fellow human. if so, does that make you a killer. my ancestors were idol worshippers who believed in human sacrifice (i think). going by your twisted logic, doesn't that make me evil, seeing as my past was 'replete with violence'? Sista:yet another dumb statement, but this time this one stems from crass ignorance. that's what pisses me off about Nigerians, always quick to bad-mouth in their ignorance. here's a link showing you where thanksgiving came from. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thanksgiving_%28United_States%29 you'll clearly see that you do not know what you're talking about, and by soundin gyour ignorance, you're showing how dumb you are. i mean, that isn't an insult. Ndipe:Perfect! Now going by your misguided logic, the prayers you say in church are a way of atoning for the past misdeeds of the Christian crusaders. after all, since there's much violence in the past of christianity, all of us christians must be evil, worshipping in a false religion abi? After all, shebi the Jehovah's witnesses say Christmas celebrations originated from a pagan festival. why then are you preparing to celebrate Christmas in 3 days time? Are you then a pagan? That just shows you how silly your argument really is. Most americans love their country and are proud of their country. sadly, we nigerians do not feel the same way about our own country and beef others who do. try and grow to love your own country and stop beefing others who love theirs. be patriotic! and better still, think before you mouth off. |
Christino:Please what if i send you my Atari 2600 console? It's been in mint condition since 1988 and has two great games : Air Battle and Sea Battle. Also, to ensure my true love does not run away, i will send you a free copy of Pacman. |
on which issue? this whole thread has degenerated into a show of dumbness. 1. the guy has posted only once, and hasn't seen fit to comment on any of your ruminations 2. It isn't really definite whether he was talking about himself or not. all he asked was our opinions whether it was a silly thing for someone to accept a 5k-a-month deal. 3. Some well-meaning (but silly) person puts his uncle's number and his email on a public forum for all to see. Well-meaning, but silly. i reiterate that this is just the brainchild of someone looking for cheap popularity. that's all! Besides, if he was in dire need of a job, how come of all his previous 9 posts on nairaland, none has been in the Jobs category? |
Sista:Dumbest thing i ever heard |
someone posted something about a job, he didn't see fit to provide more info about himself and his qualifications etc and hasn't even contributed to the discussion. i for one am of the opinion that the guy's just a rabble rouser looking for some cheap popularity. anyway, just in case you really mean it, i don't agree with y'all that advocate his taking the job, or working without pay. working without pay is only an option if there's a clear indication that you'll get something out of it. as a graduate, taking 5k a month is definitely selling yourself short, it's self abasement on an astronomicl scale to stoop that low. I mean, it's a lot better to sell recharge cards or take photos, at least then you know you're your own boss. develop yourself and persevere. that's my advice. |
iice:brosnan was dropped by the producers. he's in his early 60s, i believe, and was begining to show his age in die another day. besides, after Goldeneye, every other bond movie has gone steadily downhill, critics loved craig! and remember that that was supposed to be bond's first mission, when he was still relatively raw, |
all those who say auto's are 4 women, grow up!! learn to use easier tools available! there's nothing macho in deliberately making your work harder |
Why do people generalize so much? why perpetuate stereotypes? Several people here have said things like "Americans are arrogant", thereby implying they fully capture the frame of mind of almost 300million Americans. That's just plain stupid. what do i think? I think people need to travel more. Besides, any place with free press/media has got to be loads better than nigeria. babasin:Don't believe the hype yourself. loads of the blacks in jail are there because they sent themselves there. hatbreaker:nice! so let's have figures for the 'great majority' and also a list of the 'third world countries' with economies close to or at par wit the US economy. The rep of the US is at an all-time low due to Bush's misadventures. But give unto Ceaser what belongs to Ceaser. And be realistic. Nigeria's no way near the US. not now, not anytime soon. |
@dmz Gimme your Gears Of War!! Please do not ignore this post. President Fox of Mexico saw a post like this and ignored it. 2 days later his dog died. Janice Green of New Hampshire complied with such a request and she won the lottery. Please forward this request to any of your other Gears Of War owning buddies and you'll see something happen in your life soon. ![]() |
@dmz not sure i wanna get a ps3 any longer. at least not just yet, cos my 360 i curently rocking my world. besides, the Festus ps3 offer is for the 20GB model, and that sucks. Besides, my phone got stolen last sunday. Was an imate Jam pocket pc phone, cost me loads of cash and it's not even up to a year old. I need to get another phone and i need to come to terms with spending money that i wasn't prepared to originally, not sure what u mean by 'branded, home friendly OS' for the ps3. sure as hell there aint gonna be windows Xp running on the ps3 in our lifetimes, so linux has gotta be the best option for now. come christmas time, yellow dog linux will officially be free for download fro the ps3. The wireless keyboard/mouse combo could be an option sha, Now for the Important info: Gimme your Gears Of War now!! |
@ darkman0: how much did you get the X360 for?
u should be able to get a 360 for like 40k now. lots of guys out there are selling theirs too, cos the games are kinda expensive, on the other hand i heard that copied x360 games have hit alaba and are being sold for N1500. Nice. As far as i know however, all this furore about next-gen machines will all come to dust in naija when people see not too much difference on normal Standard Definition TV. if you really wanna game next-gen, get a HDTV. i'm playing Dead Rising on my Xbox360 on a 32 inch Samsung HDTV @ 720p and i keep getting blown away. @dmz I will never sell my 360. Never!! Why? I connected my 360 to my laptop (running windows Media center) and i can stream all my movies, music and photos to the console and display in full on the TV. Oh, Boy!! All hail the media center PC, if u haven't go Media Center Edition, windows media player 11 also does a good job of streaming media to the 360. and even a networking newbie like me was able to get them connected in a minute. Now say after me: "I have sinned and thus i must send my Gears Of War to texazzpete ASAP, " |
won't go for much in naija. many people wont buy it, naijans are barbarians, as long as there is no winning eleven on it, they won't buy. besides, dont htink many game houses would love to hav ecustomers wavign their arms about ![]() |

zukkie4eva:Jesus Christ said he came to preach the Gospel to the poor, simply because in biblical times the rich were pictured as arrogant and proud, while the poor were pictured as receptive and humble (see the parable of the Rich man's prayer and the poor man's prayer). THAT is why he said he came to preach the good news to the poor. by writing as you did, you insinuate that the rich in biblical times had no need of the gospel. that is wrong! The bible had many examples of poor couples that were filled with the Holy Spirit. In the parable of the Widow's mite, did you hear Jesus condemn the widow for her poverty? Instead Jesus talked about the amount of wealth she had stored up for herself in heaven by her actions. nowadays, you hear pastors tell you that if you're a christan you cannot be poor. This makes every church member desperate to acquire wealth, if only to show the world they aren't sinners. when you preach christianity means wealth and physical blessings, where does that leave poor and/or disabled people? it's sad but true; we're gradually returning to the days of the Pharisees and Sadducees, where every poor man or cripple is a sinner! after all, if they were good christians they'd have prosperity, wouldn't they. danger lurks in such teaching. the prosperity message is understandably appealing. people naturally long for rewards on earth rather that rewards in heaven they 'believe' in, but are impatient for. and the first rule in communication is "Give the people what they want!". God naturally would love His servants to prosper. but remember that the bible is filled with lots of examples of people who had disdain for eartly wealth. it's instructive to note that our greatest example, Jesus wasn't exactly rolling in wealth. Most other apostles had little in way of material wealth. |
Neoteny:nope. the cell isn't an innovation for gaming. it's not even an innovation for graphics, as a well specced core 2 duo machine with a geforce 8800 gfx card will pump out better visuals than anything seen on the ps3 till date. resistance: fall of man can't hold a candle to Crysis (still in dev state). all hail the power of the CELL (sarcasm). read the buzz on the cell. you'll hear developers talkin about how the cell allows u to render more realistic water and improved physics. so what i wanna ask u is this: since when did leering over smooth ripples or seeing a guy you just shot tumble 'realistically' change gaming? why do we game? we do it for fun! and i sure had more fun playing Halo 1 on my pc than playing Prey, even though prey had far better graphics. i'm sure most real gamers will agree with me. the Wii gives you somethign the ps3 can't even hope to do; a new way of playing games. it's not about 'newfangled controllers'. it's about you being more immersed in the game itself, about a fun and novel way to control games. what this means is that as far as you're concerned, as long as a game has trees with 100000 polygons, it can't be poor. Daikatana had better graphics than Deus Ex. guess which one is regurlarly listed as one of the worst games ever on pc, Try it out. the Wii will rock YOU! |
the ps3 supports USB keyboards and mice. and u dont need to install drivers to conect them. epic's unreal tournament 2007 has already been announced as having usb keyboard and mouse support out of the box. any standard one will do. coupled with the fact that you can install linux, run dvds, connect to the internet and browse with linux and run linux based emulatos ( i think), it looks like a compelling buy. if they finally update the firmware, allowngi t to upscale DVDs to HD resolution, i'm all for it! |
lol. you guys crack me up. actually, i meant Iraq Centre for Research and Strategic Studies. my bad however, i never said i completely believed the information. i'm only just reporting what i saw on TV. here's a link to some info about the centre http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Iraq_Centre_for_Research_and_Strategic_Studies Disclaimer: The article referenced by the link above might be based on biased opinions. i only skimmed thru. make of it what u will. |
just saw this on CNN 19 out of 20 Iraqis say they had better security under Saddam Hussein 9 out of 10 iraqis say they feel less safe when around American soldiers 2/3 of iraqis feel iraq will be safer if the coalition soldiers move out Source : Iraq Centre for Strategic Studies |
Afam:sadly, such topics have become few and far between. most of the topics seen here now are of the 'Should i marry my boyfriend?' or 'Regina Askia is dating Genevieve' or 'What if your friend is gay' variety. at this rate, i despair of ever reaching 1000 posts ![]() despite all these sha, nairaland still remains an interesting place to visit occasionally. |
@Afam it's been long. i even thought you'd joined the exodus of people who have departed nairaland until i saw your post on theh PHP thread. glad to see you're still around! |
Easyy:want to know what i think? you keep repeating the same arguments over and over even when you know there's no logic to it. for God's sake, the iraq war has thrown up unforseen consequences such as this sectarian conflict, and event the fiercest opponents of the invasion didnt even conceive of such a scenario playing out. as to your idea of 'preparing the grounds', making everyone responsible for tragic outcomes of decisions they make is an illogical path to follow. therefore we all should hold vehicle manufacturers responsible for any road accidents (if not for vehicles, there wouldnt be road accidents). if your brother is killed in millitant action in warri, blame the federal government and the oil companies, if you get robbed, blame the government for not creating jobs for the robbers etc. the iraqi people had a chance to make post-war iraq a truly great country, after being freed from the yooke of a tyrannical dictator but they failed to do so. after all, they had a great opportunity. it's so easy to label saddam a 'dictator' without fully appreciating the extent of his tyranny. think abacha was a dictator? please read reports of what dictators like stalin and saddam did in power. but the iraqis didnt take the chance given to them. instead of forging a bold new world, they decided to get even, settle ancient rivalries first. immediately after saddam was toppled iraq was relatively peaceful. what soured this? the iraqis themselves! . Easyy:your attempts to bring race and religion into this is extremely unfortunate and does you a great disservice. the iraqis are killing them selves, yet they are fellow muslims and arabs. the americans aren't doing the killing. since the americans aren't doing the killings, your point is moot. it is at this point that i lose all respect for you as an intellectual of any kind. as i said, highly regrettable Easyy:were your point to be true, maybe we would be in trouble. but considering the fact that every man and his dog knows that Bush's administration is winding down, the man himself is focusing more on damage control than future millitary adventures and that more moderate Democrats will most likely secure the white house for the next couple of years, i think 'Bush apologists' have nothing to fear from the 'savage'. Easyy:Nice! Now since you haven't spoken out about the rapes and killings in darfur (which is the greatest evil happening in africa currently), the sack of a legally constituted government in somalia, the wars and the blood diamonds in sierra leone and the repression in zimbabwe shouldn't that line apply to you? should you expect defenders in YOUR time of tribulation? Or does the word 'evil' only have gravity when the US is involved? Easyy:'because he thinks he's God?'? Your responses are becoming wild and you're flailing around trying to desperately sustain an invalid point. calm down and address issues logically. I maintain over and over again that we should, as intellectuals, be able to discuss things here with maturity, try not to form a 'Me againt THEM' mentality and always be willing to learn something new. |
wiining eleven on the wii? where did ya get that from? also note that successHk are selling the ps3 for 800 dollars for the 60GB model fror those of y'all early importers, |
@seun why not ask for something that excludes fetish? im pretty sure 99% of the scripts you'll receive will have some dodgy babalawo scenes. also, removing fetish stuff would at least cut out the need for some dodgy looking computer animations and effects. ![]() |
Ka:there's something called the middle road. and nigerians just want the truth. do you really think that's too much to ask? overly negative stories of nigeria will draw ire. over positive and saccharine sweet gist will draw scorn. lets have the truth undiluted, simple! |
Christino:not really. zune cornered only 9% of the sales chart when it came out. guess which other iconic mp3 player has the biggest portionof the sales? the ipod! i agree with you, apple products are overpriced, and i hate it when apple fanboys come crowing about the beauty of they devices, not caring that they paid far more than they're supposed to. i mean, i love my ipod video but apple not allowing you cahnge the ipod battery is criminal. from what i hear, the battery performance is seriously degraded over time, and when it dies, you gotta buy another ipod. that sucks |
sniperwolf:i should like to kill you for suggesting that. please tell me you weren't bleeping serious |
@dmz not too keen on installing linux on my pc when windows does all my work, and i got my windows for free with my laptop. linux isn't bad, the problem with these open source gurus is the ultra-religious vibes they put out, posing as crusaders againt the 'great satan' microsoft. what these guys dont realise is that guys like me just want stuff that can do all your work as easilty as possible, and as far as windows does my work, the ps3 is another matter. it'd always be hooked up to my tv and so i can as well install it, using usb devices for storage. since i plan to get a 32 inch HDTV soon enough, i can work on a large screen, giving my eyes a rest. as for ther ebay stuff, no thanks! $800 is still too mcuh to pay, i got in contact with one guy in lag who claims he can sell me a ps3 for 90k. he probably obtained his console through illegal means but who cares. although i get vibes like he wants to scam me, but i don't scam easy. by the way, my fone crashed again, so i lost your number. just mail it to me so i'll always have it. if you need a way to get new games, you can try www.orderbay.com. these guys help you order stuff from overseas for 10% of the value. it's totallyon the level, it's run by my friend's sister. i'm trying to order a 32 inch HDTV (sony BRAVIA) from amazon.com with this. buying a HDTV in nigeria is sheer lunacy. the wii also sounds interesting, but like most gaming barbarians, i wont touch a co0nsole that doesnt have soccer on it. also i've gotten the condemned for pc, so if you want it, Festus/jinus recently told me he has Xbox 360 oblivion so you might see him for that |
duh any apple console will look sweet, as usual, but in reality would be slightly underpowered, while apple attempt to convince you that you don't really need all that much power, they'd go all proprietary on their graphics card, and get trumped by Nvidia's and ATI/AMD's offerings. they'd have a unique interface that'd such for games. hgamers dont care if their systems look cool. as long as they have enough horses under the hood, BTW, i guess i'm getting a ps3 soon, if i can get one to buy, that is. , the ps3 seems set to do what all my friends failed to do : get me to install and use linux! |
@Easyy i never said let's discuss OBJ and forget Bush. I'm merely using the same logic Jesus used when he said "first remove the log in your eye before removing the speck of dust in your neighbour's eye". i'm sorry if you can't see that. Easyy:'They'? I'm presenting my own views here, not that of any group of people as far as i know. this 'We against Them' mentality is always frustrating. Afam:The carnage in Iraq today, was it sanctioned by president Bush? Whatever his reasons (financial or otherwise) for invading Iraq, ultimately the Americans hoped to set Iraq as an example of democracy in the Middle east. call it naive optimism but the carnage and chaos in iraq was not envisaged by the perhaps overly optimistic US war planners. 99.99% of the killings in Iraq today happen at the hands of Iraqis themselves. While this would never have happened without the Invasion, the Iraqis themselves chose to escalate the conflict, deliberately fuelling simmering religious tensions. without a brutal dctator to suppress such tensions, iraq is burning. perhaps if bush had been as ruthless and brutal as saddam, this would never have happened, but i'm pretty sure any tough measures would have led to further howls of outrage. bush has publicly admitted that the war on iraq was based on flawed intelligence reports and recommendations. so what exactly do you mean by 'show remorse'? perhaps you hope that a video of him shedding crocodile tears over iraq would do wonders to appease the warring parties in iraq? i agree with you, justice and fairplay go hand in hand with peace. But i don't think the crimes committed by bush and saddam are comparable. one killed knowingly, willingly and brutally. the other made a foolish blunder that has led to the death of many. but most of these deaths were not at his hand. that's the distinction i make here. at least we all agree that saddam deserves his fate ![]() |
Easyy:Everybody can see there are some things wrong with american/americans. but most people realize that not EVERYTHING is wrong with all things american. it's become the pattern for people to take serious flak for daring to say anything positive about the US. By the way, your comment that my bringing up OBJ as an example is off topic is totally wrong. In trying to buttress my point i'm free to bring up any similar case that comes to mind. and yes, it's stark hypocrisy to condemn one and remain silent on the other, for similar 'crimes'. but then again, why stop at Bush, why not have a go at blair too, after all, like Bush, he was a driving force behind the war too. and theh british presence in Iraq is also seen as an occupation force. Or is Britain bashing a lot less lucrative than US bashing? please, before you deny, have the decency to read through this topic top to bottom. by the way, the topic reads "Should George Bush Also Face Trial?". and that is a question you're asking, not a statement. this is a forum and as such any topic is open to debate. just because people answer that question from THEIR own points of view, with THEIR own opinions doesn't mean things should get personal. statements like 'let's put a little more intelligence into this' are inexcusably anti-social. next time y'all dont want (or can't appreciate) dissenting views, please, please phrase your topic as STATEMENTS or get a blog. as always, i'm all for peace and knowledge. i'm willing to learn from anyone out there. if i want beef, i'll go to the kitchen ![]() |
