Yeah the US is real stable. . .When last did Iraq fight a war?, In the past 100 years, the US have practically been at war with one party or another. Their enemies change like the chameleon and somehow you want me to believe they're stable and peaceful?. . .Which decade in the pastt 100 years has the US not been involved in war?, Weird for a stable, peaceful nation I will say.
The US has fought
1) World \war 1 - helped the world in defeating evil
2) World War 2 - same as above, liberated France, Libya, Philippines etc from tyrannical occupation
3) Korean War - Fought to preserve peace in Korea
4) Vietnam - Attempted same as above
5) Gulf War -Liberated Kuwait
6) Iraq War - grin

Now, in how many of these wars were the americans the aggressors?
and yes, the US HAS been stable and peaceful.

and you have balls asking me when last Iraq fought a war. Where were you during the Iraq-iran war and Gulf War 1? Where were you when bloody rebellion swept the mullahs into power in Iran?

When last did you see/hear an American leader publicly call for genocide?

@davidylan.

If the worlds oil supply is destroyed, we will be invaded and annexed. We will NOT smile to the bank. Pray it doesnt happen.

@everyone else.

Please go and read up on Nuclear weapons.

No really, I'm talking to YOU, the guy who thinks he knows what they do. I can assure you u do not, and I'm talking to all the smartest people here. Google 'overpressure front'- that will be a good starting point. From there keep going till you get a GOOD CLEAR picture of what nukes can do.

'tactical low yield nukes' are a joke, and everyone knows that. The little thing they dropped on Hiroshima was 1.2 Mt. Nowadays we have upwards of 100mt, and H-bombs.

God help us if anyone actually uses these weapons. For the record, a nuke does NOT create a 'big explosion', and radiation is just one of the many problems it creates. WWhen you find out what nukes do, you will agree with me that God does not need to create HELL, man has done it already.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tactical_nuclear_weapons
hiroshima gave yields in kilotons, not megatons.

Nuclear bombs are extremely dangerous! Utmost care must be made to ensure they don't fal into the wrong hands.
at least most of the countries that have them are stable countries, with numerous checks and balances before their use. Before the US used the bombs at hiroshima, circumstances (think projected US casualties of 1 million, japanese casualties way higher than that for a land invasion) had to be taken into reckoning.
all the proliferation people don't know what they are saying.

Not that it will happen but, an Iran with Nuclear weapons will mean Saudi Arabia will also seek and possess nuclear weapons. You guys think the massacres in Iraq between Shiites and Sunnis are bad right now? You haven't seen anything yet.

Actually maybe this is the solution to the problems of the Middle East. Let them bomb each other off the map. No doubt they will take Israel along as well. The "Holy Land" will be so polluted by radiation, no one will give a shit about it or lay claim to it any more. The survivors would be sick for generations so they will have other issues to deal with rather than terrorism. A large number of potential terrorists will be eliminated in one swoop.

Yeah, there are definitely up sides to Iran having nuclear weapons.
Yup! Not to mention plunging the world into an unprecedented energy crisis as most of the world's oil supply goes up in smoke, eh?
brilliant!
Computers › Re: Linux or Windows Operating System? by texazzpete(m): 3:23pm On Feb 05, 2007
I think linux users need to stop thinking windows users are lazy as an excuse not to provide proper documentation. I don't think Googling to solve the smallest problem is an answer. we aren't talkng about Linux vs Windows for IT geeks (even though i used to be one), we're talking Windows vs Linux for regular, everyday people!

I've got a friend that's been trying to get me to switch to linux. I haven't been bothered to do that, cos i game once in a while and playing old games (like Wolfenstein or Doom) doesn't cut it for me. However, I decided to install Linux on my Playstation 3, and i dutifully installed Yellow Dog Linux. Aside for the text-heavy bootup screens, i havta say that the damn thing isn't quite there in terms of user-friendliness. Imagine, to install VLC, i hadto get and install several rpms, worry about dependencies and other crapolas. To install Mplayer, i had to untar, run make, configure etc. To use mplayer to play a file, i had to run a command, because these linux geeks don't even think that a GUI is useful. You actually have to get the GUI skin files seperately, and then run make and then configure gui command.
Sadly, since i had already done the installation without GUi, i kept gettign errors when i tried to install the GUi version. i searched in vain for a way to uninstall programs, thanks to the non inclusion of any 'help' feature whatsoever.
FInally the installation came through, after several sweaty moments. Now i can play the files with mplayer, but i have to use a command when i want to play in fullscreen.

At times that makes me long for the ease of installing ONE .exe file to solve all my problems, !

i'll tell u smthing.

i heard this from a staunch Windows groupie

"What, years of bugging from Mac-using friends couldnt do to convert me,
Windows Vista has done in its launch, i thereby pledge my allegiance to Mac"

So u see, Vista is a poor copy of the Mac OS
i have read so much on this and i will get the links to the sites that have this debate on
later!
grin
Perhaps your 'windows groupie' friend could explain why he could make a decision on an OS he hasn't even used.
and besides, the info from vista adopters is pretty good!

But don't let me discourage you! Buy a Mac if
1) You don't want 90% of your windows apps to work.
2) you have no interest in playing latest games and Direct X 10 graphics dont catch your fancy
3) You decide all there is in a computer is pretty graphics
4) You just can't be arsed* to install regular patches and an antivirus in your windows PC
5) You decide to go legit, buying a meagre selection of software and turning your back on the rich variety of N200 software in otigba
6) you love overpriced, midlevel hardware!
7) you like waiting 7 months for a 'Mac OS version' of commonly available windows software.

For me, running Mac OSX is out of the question. I love the pretty graphics but when i saw Halo: combat evolved for mac being touted as a new game (Nov 2006, Apple Shop, UK) i know it's pretty shyte for gaming!

As for those talking about windows ripping Mac off, Wikipedia says The first OS with a GUI (with Icons) was the Xerox PARC, which APPLE itself is considered to have ripped off. Check the first few posts in this thread for the wikipedia link!

Seriously, have you seen the Apple ads? They aren't saying , Buy Mac OSx, they are saying "Buy a Mac". considerring the fact that MacOSX is now running on Intel X86 chips, why not tout the OS itself, allowing pc users to buy an install? why sell them with the Mac system which is significantly overpriced (a good $400 in som cases higher than equivalent windows PC?)

At a point, you just stop ogling the pretty graphics and look at what's on offer.

MTN and glo offer unlimited GPRS for =N=12,000 per month. If you calculate the celtel rate at 10k per kb, you would have exhaust =N=12,000 by downloading only 120MB which is less than half of what I download daily. To download only one Mp3 song might even cost you nothing less than =N=500.
You download over 320MB daily with a GPRS connection in naija? Stop deceiving yourself!

Anyway, most people usually chat with Agile messenger or IM+, and a chat message is usually far less than 1KB. ergo, you can chat for 30 mins and pay less than 10 naira

now china now have capabilities for a satellite warfare US is shaking very soon US would do what they know how to do best if they can to manipulate the situation and stop other countries from having it also

@davidlan

the Americans have changed the names of their nukes it is no more nukes it is now called tactical nuke which they claim to be precise and accurate which we both know it is a lie because there would still be radiation

don't allow your self to be deceived they ain't doing away with nothing they r only doing away with old expired nukes

probably they have threatened iran and others then to sign the pact because of economic reasons which we all know thats what US uses to negotiate but if i might ask who gave them the powers to become world police??

i just wish bush would just do the simple mistake and not listen to his senate and attack iran, then we r in for a war
I'm in too much of a hurry to educate you on the difference between conventional nukes and tactical nukes. please read it up and stop making uneducated comments!

As for those supporting nuclear prolifearation, please let us know how many times in the last 30 years that a country has actively threatened another with its nuclear arsenal. Most of you speak with ignorance of the awesomely destructive force that is a nuclear weapon. at best such weapons should not exist. but they do! The onus now is to prevent such things from falling into the hands of unstable people. and Iran (and north korea) doesn't strike me as well- balanced.  Indeed, a nation that has called for the extermination of another should not be trusted with WMDs. At least, any person with a brain here can't envisage the scenario of an american nuclear attack on any other country in the near future. can you say the same for North Korea or Iran?
historically, the Arab countries have attacked Israel when they think they are strong enough or Israel is weak enough. Did any quarrel precipitate the 1972 Arab-Israeli war? Or wasn't it just an attack at the most opportune time?

To those shouting about the existence of plans by israel drawn up in case they need to attack Iran, y'all need to GROW UP! What do you think Nigerians do in NDA? Contingency plans for the invasion of Cameroun, Ghana, Chad and defensiv emeasures in case of a Libyan Invasion are drawn up, and it is the duty of the Nigerian army to update them frequently. Any country that doesn't have contigency plans for armed offensive/defense against it's neighbouring countries has no business having an armed forces. Sheesh!

The Nigerian police carry guns. so do the armed robbers! Should we let everyone carry guns now? Would you like the next door maiguard and the neighborhood madman to have  a gun too?

Have you been able to provide any statistics to back up your own claims?? Say something meaningful jo; because you hold a first class Degree and so what??
Please, do i have to point your eyes to the place where i wrote that i had a 2.1 just a few posts up before you see?
Also, why do i have to provide statistics to back up my claims? it's ownly your claims that go against the grain, that goes against common sense. ergo, the onus of proof is on you!

ishmael:
Is it everybody that graduated from the university that wrote and passed JAMB - UME exams?? What about those that went in through Pre-Degree or Remedial programmes?? What about those that went in with A'Level GCE and IJMB?? Sorry, we wrote JAMB - PCE before going into the polytechnic too. And for your information you are not well placed with your 1st class or what ever than all 2.2, 3rd class and HND graduates. Some HND holders even have a better job than you here in Nigeria and abroad. Make we hear word jo; na you first get 1st class?
Stop splitting hairs here. My point was clearly to enquire whether you weren't aware of the discrimination to HND professionals before you entered. I'm sure you were. So why complain now?
besides, the vast majority of people in university entered through JAMB. or should i say UME, so i don't get any further distraction from you.

It's entirely possible some HND holders and 2.2s have better jobs than myself. i freely admit that! But it must be said that i managed to obtain a good grade and secured good employment.  Not gonna get caught mentioning my salary or job here but my taxes last year came up to a million naira. That should give you a good idea of the fruit i'm currently enjoying from my labour  grin.

Now go and make your life useful instead of griping! You're probably the only person here who speaks with so much spite and bitterness. be happy!  grin

and while you're at it, spruce up your brains a little, ok? I have a terrible need to actually learn something from any conversation, but you just aren't coming across as particularly sensible.

All those supporting the discrimination against people with 2.2 and 3rd class simply because they got 1st class or 2.1 are simply those who are afraid to take the same test or exams with those who came out with 2.2 and 3rd class. They know very well that their performance(s) in the test will be poor compared to what people with 2.2 and 3rd class will get. They are doing everything possible to save themselves from disgrace and embarrassment. We know all these things i beg. It's the same thing with HND and Bsc too, the Bsc holders are always afraid to write the same test with HND holders for fear of being disgraced. Thatz why i love ICAN; it is show your skills and not show your class of Degree or HND, and the HND guys have been doing better or showing their skills there. Some Bsc holders with 1st class and 2.1 have been writing ICAN exams for the past 6 years and have not been able to qualify; some of them have even given up!! while most HND guys clear the exams within 2 years.
Afraid?
Son, i will test my brains with anyone, anytime. As far as tests go, i rule!
Listen, i've never said people with 2.2 aret smart. some are really brainy. but then again, if you can't prove your brains under a 4-6 year program, then what do prospective employer have to go by?
Please provide some statistics to back up your outlandish claims. Sure, some 2.1 can't back up their degree, but most 3rd class and many 2.2s can defend their poor degrees  grin !

The discrimination against HND holders has been ongoing for over a decade! Why do you people, knowing this, still go ahead to read HND? Why didnt you stay and do JAMB over again if you knew it was going to be rocky when you came out? Once again, y'all be man enough to take the fall.

Like debosky said, we need to stop basing our arguments on "Wole Soyinka didn't make a first class". So what? Bill gates and Larry Ellision dropped out of school. Do you think they would hire you if you dropped out without a vision?

During my NYSC, i met a brilliant guy who could easily match me in intellectual arguments. he graduated with a Pass degree. i had to carefully scrutinize the certificate before i believed him. No matter how intelligent he is, i wouldn't hire him if i owned a business. why? because i showed he isn't serious!

here's a personal experience. I graduated with a 2.1 with a GPA of 3.55. I could easily have made a 4+ point GPA, but i chose to play. thank God i woke up in time to realise my impending doom  grin. My point is, even from when i entered school in 1997, i knew the stakes, i knew the hurdles to be faced if u get less than a 2.1. And we all know this! If there's discrimination in the Nigerian labour market, it's not a new thing. Yet, knowing this, some of us still fritter away our chances of getting a good grade after school. There's no one but yourself to blame if you think you're intelligent yet failed to get a 2.1 and above.

I got a 2.1 at the end. I had the potential to get a very high grade and i didn't take it. but it ended well for me. if it hadn't and i had gotten a 2.2, i'd have had no one else but myself to blame.

I reiterate my point; we all knew about the discrimination before we entered school. yet people who blithely suppress their potential have no one else to blame but themselves.

It's a tradition now for the VC of Uniben to tell every new student at matric the perils of gettign a poor grade after graduation. Can such a student now start howling at the discrimination when he graduates with a poor grade?
And yes, everybody CAN get a 2.1 if they merit it.

Gaming › Re: The Playstation 3 Review From An Actual Owner by texazzpete(m): 8:25pm On Jan 31, 2007
Interesting.
1. Backwards compatibility is useless for 99% of Nigerian ps2 owners, since the ps3 wont play copied ps2 games, and the original games raent region free. also, ps2 and ps1 games look slightly worse in HD. In fact, since the ps3 cant upscale ps1 and ps2 games, they play at 480p max, and there are jaggies in many ps2 games.

2. The Sixaxis controller lacks rumble support. That leaves it feeling light and cheap. Also, you have to press the button in the middle EVERY time u turn the game on. The Xbox360 has to be paired just Once! and you can turn on the xbox360 easilty witht he equally wireless pad.

3. The browser is nowhere near Internet explorer, with limited css support and it's kinda slow compared to IE or firefox. read online reviews if u doubt me.

4. You don't need a memory card adaptor to save ps2 games. the ps2 creates an internal memory card, so when playing ps2/ps1 games it saves there. U sure u actually have a ps3? Cos if you've run a ps2 game on it lik eu claim u have, you'd have seen this option.

Strange that you play the 'Actual Owner' card. i've had my ps3 since december 20th, and i know better than to write a 'review' of a 600 dollar game console without mentioning actual gameplay on it. Did you buy the console just to ogle at the Pad?

The Ps3 right now is struggling to live up to it's hype, it's being beaten by the Wii at the moment, the demand has slackened and the games out on it have largely received lacklustre review. gamespot just did a review showing that games on both the xbox360 and the ps3 had slightly better graphics on the 360. at least for now.

Do something useful with the ps3. i see u have the 60Gb version like i do. Install yellow Dog Linux and convert your ps3 to a linux computer. i run Snes games, watch Divx movies and play VCDs on my ps3. that's the way to go until sony gets their act together!

Microsoft Zune isn't a rip-off of ipod! The Apple ipod wasnt the first mp3 player to hit the market, it just became the coolest. Are u saying that offerings from Creative and samsung are also ipod rip-offs?
Microsoft brought to market a competing product, with its own unique features. It's like saying the PSP is  a rip-off of the Nntendo DS or the PS3 is a rip=off of the xbox360. Why?

After all, apple didnt make the first portable video player with HDD. Creative beat them to video playback. But you'll never catch an apple fanboy claiming Apple ripped off Creative.
And apple sure as hell didnt comeup witht he first touchscreen phone. they ripoffs too?

@Man-eater

Since when did upgrading the Graphics of you OS become copying? Why do some people talk so much about things they know so little about?
Also, where did you get the idea that the Mac OS has garnered even up to a 15% market share worldwide? The vast majority of COmputers worldwide use windows.

kdships:
Microsoft have always been a copycat. That was how they started. There's no doubt about this fact. They got this concept from Apple. I don't think experienced Mac users will make any move. Who knows, Apple might come up with something new too.
exactly which concept did they get from apple? Is Apple the only company allowed to make an aesthetically pleasing OS, or is there a patent out for 'beautiful OS'?
get real. Also, i really don't think experience Mac owners were targeted by windows vista. like Bill Gates said, the biggest competitor to Windows Vista is Windows XP! Convincing the massive Xp userbase to upgrade is the primary task, not wooing over the hardcore apple users. Most reviewers agree vista is the best Window ever, but what they say is that it isn't yet a must-upgrade from XP. it'll get there eventually,

akhy4life:
Microsoft has launched a new product into the Market. It is called Windows Vista. I hear it is too powerful for computer systems
Why would microsoft launch a mass-market Os that is 'too powerful for computer systems'? At times, it pays to apply a little common sense grin

Get a Vista compatible PC and get Vista.
besides, pirated copies of vista will be hitting Ikeja this february, for those of y'all that are interested cheesy

N250000 is a lot of money in nigeria. And besides, if this happened in your department (or your university) why do you think this happened in other universities? your experience isn't really enough to base your assertion that there are a 'lot' of dubious 2.1s floatign around.

@dreban
people who come with 2.1 and 1st class did that based on what they were taught. and most of them with such degrees can defend what they were taught. so let's please stop slagging off at people with good degrees. Employers feel some 1st class graduates are a let down, because they base their assessments on things that they feel these guys should have been taught, not on what they had been taught. PDP is Too powerful!

it isn't healthy for our democracy to have the same crazy dominance of one party in the country. Due to the overwhelming dominance of PDP, we had the entire government in one pocket. The Senate and the House were almost extensions of the PDP.
we need to weaken this party considerably.  perhaps a Yar'adua presidency with fewer governorship and senatorial slots for PDP?

I do not trust Buhari. But those of y'all talking about Buhari and his Islamic roots need to recognize that yar'adua instituted Sharia in katsina State and he was the Governor during the Amina Lawal saga. he would have sat idly by and watched a woman being stoned to death.

If it comes between picking from two flawed candidates, i might pick Yar'Adua. Especially if i do buy transcorp Shares, grin

better still, attach a scan of the font page of this magazine so potential distributors know what they're in for.

Celebrities › Re: Nigerian Celebrities Should Be Ashamed by texazzpete(m): 9:37am On Jan 31, 2007
MAMAJAMA:
texazzpete I have so much to say to you MR million naira but I will respect this forum and keep it on the DL
So, despite the disclaimer that i wasn't about to blow my own trumpet, you can't keep your errant tongue still?
Take a look at your own signature

"The man who removes a mountain begins by carrying away small stones"

So you clearly believe that big problems CAN be tackled with small steps at a time. Why then do you fail to see that even the smallest of us can make a difference in the world today, without waiting on some celebrity to jump in? Your signature alone makes you a hypocrite, shows you up as just being interested in finger-pointing. Sad.

Also, there's really no way of telling just what most of these guys are doing. Francis Obikwelu plans to use his money to fight poverty in Portugal. As far as i'm concerned, Charity is Charity. As long as it's for the common good, it need not be Nigeria he targets. Ergo, Hakeem Olajuwon et al could have projects they are working on in the US which you have no knowledge about. Think about that before your criticize.

So act out what you wrote in your signature. Look to what you can do instead of pointing fingers.

It's just like what most Nigerians do; they refuse to vote and then they think they have any right to criticize the government.

I have grand dreams for the orphanage. a million naira might seem grand to you, but there's a lot more needed. If 100000 Nigerians gave me 10 naira, i'd raise an extra million. But that wont happen.
Why?
because they, like you, are waiting for Ramsey noah or Hakeem Olajuwon to come and drop the cash at once.

Glad d free test period is over. hopefully if they start charging they'd make d connection more easy and less laggy. som eof us weren't able to connect to the GPRS before,

But then again, we don't want only GPRS. celtel is currently trialling their 3G service in naija (i've gotten some 3G service on my fone here in PH) and when they launch, i'll be browsing at 45Kbps. YaY!!

My wife will forever be protected from her in-laws by me, and i really don't understand why so many times women have problems with mother-in-laws when the man should be there to protect them.

@wiseguy
Don't mind the haters. hanks for sharing ur experience with us all. Hopefully some people out therecan learn from this!
