Tecno L8 is not on this list. I have a 2 yr old Tecno L8 and the 5000 battery still lasts more than the 5000 battery of Tecno Pouvoir I got for my lil bro. I have confirmed this. That L8 is a horse, its just an average phone but physically stout. My own is currently bent , I used my knee to press it on the bed and its working well
Christianity EtcMEET WILLIAM TYNDALE ~ The Man Who Translated The Bible by Thane(op): 10:05am On Oct 30, 2018
MEET WILLIAM TYNDALE ~ the man who translated the Bible into English & was burnt alive

Nearly 500 years ago, this week, William Tyndale, fondly called 'Father of the English Bible' was strangled and burned at the stake after being tried and convicted of heresy and treason for translating the Bible into English.

WHAT WAS TYNDALE'S OFFENSE?

He translated the Greek Bible into English. Simple.

That you have a Bible in a language you can read is largely due to his labors, and many of the very phrases you read in it retain the flavor of his understanding of the Greek and Hebrew.

A graduate of Oxford and Cambridge, Tyndale had a burning desire to make the Bible available to even the
common people in England, in order to correct the 'Biblical ignorance of the priests'. At one point Tyndale told a priest, "If God spares my life, ere many years pass, I will cause a boy that driveth the plow shall know more of the Scriptures than thou dost."

Today, 90% of the King James Version of the Holy Bible and 75% of the Revised Standard Version are from the translation made by Tyndale, a man to whom you owe more than you'll ever know.

TYNDALE'S WORK WAS 'ILLEGAL'!

It was a nice dream, but how was Tyndale to accomplish his task when translating the Bible into English was 'illegal'?

He went to London to ask Bishop Tunstall if he could be authorized to make an English translation of the Bible, but the Bishop would not grant his approval.

However, Tyndale would not let the disapproval of men stop him from carrying out what seemed so obviously God's will. With encouragement and support of some British merchants, he decided to go to Europe to complete his translation, then have it printed and
smuggled back into England.

In 1524 Tyndale sailed for Germany. In Hamburg, he worked on the New Testament, and in Cologne, he found a printer who would print the work. However, news of Tyndale's activity came to an opponent of the Reformation who had the press raided.

Tyndale himself managed to escape with the pages already printed and made his way to the German city Worms where the New Testament was soon published.

Six thousand copies were printed and smuggled into England.

The Bishops did everything they could to eradicate the Bibles. Bishop Tunstall had copies ceremoniously burned at St. Paul's; the Archbishop of Canterbury bought up copies to destroy them. Tyndale used the money to print improved editions!

Tyndale continued hiding among the merchants in Antwerp and began translating the Old Testament while the King's agents searched all over England and Europe for him.

WHO CONDEMNED TYNDALE TO DEATH!

A copy of Tyndale's The Obedience of a Christian Man fell into the hands of Henry VIII, providing the king with the rationale to break the Church in England from the Roman Catholic Church in 1534. In 1535, Tyndale was arrested and jailed in the castle of Vilvoorde (Filford) outside Brussels for over a year.

Tyndale’s work was denounced by authorities of the Roman Catholic Church and Tyndale himself was accused of heresy.

HOW DID TYNDALE DIE?

Tyndale, 42 was finally found by an Englishman who pretended to be his friend but then turned him over to the authorities. After a year and a half in prison, he was brought to trial for heresy -- FOR BELIEVING, among other things, IN THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS and that THE MERCY OFFERED IN THE GOSPEL WAS ENOUGH FOR SALVATION. In August 1536, he was condemned and was executed [burned alive at the stake] publicly on October 6, 1536, in a small town in Belgium.

TYNDALE'S LAST WORDS!

As he burnt to death, Tyndale reportedly said "Lord, open the king of England's eyes."

WAS HIS PRAYER ANSWERED?

YES! The prayer was answered first in part when three years later, in 1539, Henry VIII required every parish church in England to make a copy of the English Bible available to its parishioners. Today, Tyndale's prayer is fully answered, not only are the King's eyes opened, but the Bible a universal instrument.

RECOGNITIONS & AWARDS!

* In 1611, the 54 scholars who produced the King James Bible drew significantly from Tyndale, as well as from translations that descended from his.

* One estimate suggests that the New Testament in the King James Version is 83% Tyndale's and the Old Testament 76%.

* His translation of the Bible was the first to be printed in English, and became a model for subsequent English translations.

* In 2002, Tyndale was placed at number 26 in the BBC's poll of the 100 Greatest Britons.

.

CelebritiesBiography Of Dr. Prince Chijioke Mbanefo, The King Of Highlife (eze-egwu) by Thane(op):
Dr. Prince Chijioke Mbanefo (Eze-Egwu) is one of the most
successful African highlife songwriters and artists of all time. He started
singing professionally since 1999 but his breakthrough
didn't come until early 2005, after the release of his first hit
album "Ije Nwa Ogbenye Na Ogaranyaa" . He is best known for his bestselling albums "Onye Mmacha" and "Achakegom" which gave him worldwide recognition. He has performed in stages and concerts worldwide including in countries like Japan, Malaysia, Dubai UAE, South Africa, Benin Republic, Ivory Coast, Senegal, Ghana etc. He has recorded an astonishingly over 50 albums and counting. It is on record that he is the highlife musician with the highest number of albums.

Dr. Prince Chijioke Mbanefo was born in Onitsha 10th October
1983 into the Royal Family of Umuoniha, of Abilibaose Village
Atani in Ogbaru Local Government Area of Anambra State. Happily married to his wife Mrs Ngozi Francisca Mbanefo, a leading gospel singer and chorister in popular Nigerian church; Mountain of Fire Ministeries. It is safe to say that the music gene runs in the family as the union produced His first son, Prince Ebuka, a budding highlife musician with his first album soon to be released. Dr. Prince is blesssed with 7 illustrious children; 4 sons and 3 daughters. Dr. Prince Chijioke did his primary education in his hometown Atani before moving over to Nnewi where he did his secondary schooling. An accomplished academic guru, Dr. Prince Chijioke made all distinctions in his scholarly results. Due to his family's financial constraints, he left to Lagos where he learnt a trade. He was awarded a honorary doctorate degree by the Institution of Chartered Economics, Kaduna in 2016 .
Foray into Music
Like most musicians of his time, his early days in music was very tough. In an interview he recollects "After my studies in Nnewi, I went to Lagos to learn a trade. I did business for a while but in my innermost man, I knew music was my calling and passion. In 1999, one day i woke up and told myself that i must face my destiny which is my musical career. I had to sell all my properties and goods in my shop and invested the money in music". He continues, " In the studio i met some men that worked with Late Chief Osita Osadebe, I did the recording of my first album with them in 1999" . “You want to know the two things that really inspired me?
Love and Boredom,” Chijioke declares. “I was looking at the
music industry in Nigeria and I was absolutely bored by the
highlife genre. Everyone is doing the same thing. It’s all
about dance-able beats and microphone. That’s why
Osadebe came out and blew the world up because he
brought back the entertainment and inspiration factor. He
gave me something to be inspired by other than a person
standing on stage singing a song with a bunch of sexy
dancers. What Osadebe has done for the High-Life community is what
I’m hoping to continuing doing for the HighLife world and
music in general.” Dr. Prince Chijioke concludes.
Elaborate concepts aside, at its core, artists that influence
his music, beautiful melodies and a voice that’s as supple as
it is powerful: “I like listening to a lot of old school
Osadebe,” he says. “Musicians like Ali Chukwuma, Captain
Mudibe, Celestine Okwu, Sunny Ade, and Ebenezer Obe.
Osadebe didn’t just make songs. He made inspirational songs and that’s
what I’m always striving to do.” Dr. Prince Chijioke Mbanefo asserts about other artists that influenced him
His style of music is highly influenced by the Highlife Legend , Late Chief Osita Osadebe who is coincidentally also from his hometown. In several interviews, Dr. Prince Chijioke has acknowledged that Late Chief Osita Osadebe is his role model.

Early Struggles in Music 1999-2005
After recording his first album "Eziafakaego" in 1999,he went to his mentor Osadebe for blessings. Late Chief Osadebe gave him his blessings and prayers to succeed in his music career. But despite, the fatherly anointing and local acceptance, Dr. Prince Chijioke still couldn't find a marketer willing to market and distribute his album because he was just an upcoming artist. Between this period he was performing underground.

Breakthrough
In 2005,during one of his underground performances, Dr. Prince Chijioke met with Nigerian Popular Music Duo of mega superstar status; Danfo Drivers. His lifeline came when he performed after Danfo drivers in a show and he thrilled the crowd. After then, Dr. Prince Chijioke started getting shows and calls from different quaters. He later got acquainted with late Mr. Chigozie Okoye who introduced him to the CEO of Sunny General Music, Mr Sunny Ibe. Sunny General Music marketed Dr. Prince Chijioke's second album "Ije Nwa Ogbenye na ogaranya" which he released in 2005. The 4-track album was an instant hit nationwide. He later released the video for the album in 2007
This was when his career was propelled to high echelon. When asked how he’s evolved as an artist, Prince Chijioke's answer
was simple: “I’m not afraid anymore,” he said. “When you’re
first starting out you try so hard to get in the business and
get noticed and when you finally do get in, you don’t want to
step on anybody’s toes. You’re afraid you might get kicked
out and locked out.”
“I really want to drive home the fact that I’m a true artist. I’m
done playing in the junior league and graduated to the big
time, 100 percent an expression of myself, with no apologies
made and no more playing it safe".

PoliticsThe Travials Of Atiku by Thane(op): 3:27pm On Sep 07, 2018
*IF THE BIBLE WERE TO BE WRITTEN IN OUR TIME, THE STORY OF ATIKU COULD HAVE BEEN THUS*

AN ACCOUNT OF THE TRIALS OF ATIKU THE SON OF ABUBAKAR

1. In the seventh year that king Obasanjo reigned over the kingdom, a great trouble broke out in the land. For when his time was come nigh that he may descend from the throne that he called unto himself noble men in the land.

2. And he declared unto them saying: "Now that my days on the throne are few, allow me therefore to rule over thee for another four years".

3. And he gathered together of them that maketh laws in the Red Chamber in the city of the king, and even unto they in the Green Chamber, that they may amend the books of the law to favour him.

4. But this thing grieved Atiku the son of Abubakar who was the king's deputy. And he said unto his master, "howbeit seekest thou to rule over the people for another term? sweareth not thou by the name of thy god to set me upon the throne after thee?

5. Practice thou not this great evil against me and against the kingdom for it is written in the books of the law that a king may not reign but for two terms which equal eight years''. But these words changeth not the heart of the king.

6. And Atiku conspired with the Governors of the provinces and of the men who maketh laws in the city of the great king and they rejected king Obasanjo that he may continually reign over the kingdom.

7. And the king was wrought with grave anger and he declared according to these words to Atiku the son of Abubakar saying, "because thou hath done this great evil unto me, thou shall no longer sit upon the throne of this kingdom even unto thy death".

8. When the son of Abubakar saw that the king favoureth him not, that he departed from the camp of the king by the name PDP, and pitched his tent in the camp of the king's adversaries by the name ACN that he may contend the throne of the kingdom.

9. And it came to pass that Governor Yaradua who ruleth over the province of Katsina found favour in the sight of king Obasanjo. And when the time was come for the appointment of the king that he defeated Atiku and was appointed and anointed king over the kingdom. And king Yaradua ruleth the kingdom with the fear of God. But his days as king was full of affliction.

10. And when king Yaradua gave up the ghost that Goodluck the son of Jonathan who siteth by his side as the deputy reigned after him. But when the time was come nigh that the son of Jonathan be appointed again that Atiku departed from the camp of the king's adversaries and entered into the king's camp that he may be appointed.

11 . But the son of Jonathan defeated Atiku again for he spake according to these words unto the people, "I feel thy pains brethren for I was once like thee. I wore no sandals on the soul of my feet in the years of my youth when seeketh I knowledge, for my parents were of little means". And the people loved him and appointed him.

12. And the host of the other camps were vexed with a great vexation. For sixteen years they made battle against the king's camp and hath not prevailed against it.

13. And a certain noble man by the name Audu the son of Ogbe declared unto the leaders of the camps that contended the throne with the king's camp saying: "howbeit thinkest thou in thy heart to prevail against the king's camp if comest thou not together as one?

14. Harken to my voice this day, come let us reason together that we may enlarge our coast and verily, verily I say unto thee, the throne of the kingdom shall be delivered into our hands.

15. Of the camps that came together that day to form the APC were ACN from the west, ANPP from the North and a part of APGA from the East of the kingdom. Even the unhappy in the camp of PDP crossed over into the camp too.

16. And Atiku the son of Abubakar departed again from the king's camp by the name PDP and entered into the camp of the king's adversaries that he may contend the throne.

17. But Mohammed the son of Buhari was favoured among them that seeketh the throne from the camp of the APC for he swore unto the leaders of the camp saying, "Behold brethren, I am full of age and my eyes are becoming dim, suffer me to ascend unto the throne for I shall only reign for four years". And Buhari was anointed king over the kingdom.

18. And it troubled the son of Abubakar in his heart that he was rejected as king again. But he saith in his heart, I shall be of long suffering and remain in this camp for I shall ascend unto the throne after the fourth year of king Buhari.

19. But it came to pass that as the end of the fourth year of king Buhari's reign was at hand that the advisers in the king's court said unto him, be of good courage, gird thy loins and present thyself to be appointed again to reign over the kingdom for another four years.

20. And when Atiku heard of these words that he was vexed with anger and he repenteth that he joined the APC.

21. And he said, "I shall arise and go back to PDP which is the camp of my youth. And I shall declare unto them, “I have sinned against thee and against God. Accept me this day that I may once again contend the throne in thy bosom”.

22. And on the twenty fourth day of the eleventh month of the year before a new king is appointed that Atiku the son of Abubakar departed from the camp of APC and joined the camp of his youth.

23. And there was great jubilation in the camp of PDP that day for they said, “Verily, the prodigal son returneth.

24. But they forgot that Aremu, the son of Obasanjo, who still sees himself as the King maker, will not approve of it.

25. But behold, I say unto you, verily the spirit of the living God, when it returneth unto Aremu, the son of Obasanjo shall cause him to see the light and giveth his approval, and there shall be great jubilation in the camp of Atiku, the son of Abubakar.

26. During the process, Atiku, the son of Abubakar wept with crocodile tear runing his chicks......and The God of Abraham is still silent on his case till date.MC2737

In the popular game of football, it is a known fact that there is no need to change a winning team. Anambra North Senatorial district is the hands of the winning team, captained by the ever loving mother of the people Sen. Stella Oduah.

Sen. Stella Oduah needs no introduction, she is the incumbent Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District in the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. She is one of six female senators in the 8th assembly, and one of the two Senators from the one true Igbo party APGA.

The Antecedents of the distinguished Senator precedes her time in the senate. Oduah served in the Goodluck Jonathan administration as
minister of aviation. She was confirmed to the post and sworn
in on July 2, 2011 and was deployed to the ministry on July 4,
2011. A post she held till she contested and won the Senate seat.
Her milestones and achievement in the aviation sector are monumental and too numerous to mention. She transformed the the infrastructure and upgraded the structure of the various airports in the country. She spearheaded the upgrade of the Akanu Ibiam Airport Enugu from a domestic airport to an International airport status. Nigerians, especially Ndi Igbo know how this singular act has been very helpful concerning air travel to and fro the Southeast has been to them. She is one of the best ministers
to ever serve in aviation. She coined the word TRANSFORMATION because she is Transformation personified.

In the Senate, these past four years has been a very vibrant one for the people of Anambra North.
First , Senator Oduah is one of the most resourceful
politicians out of Anambra state . She has
contributed immensely to her constituency –
Anambra north, and to the state . It is on the record that she has empowered more than 1000 young men and women in various skills and trades . She has given scholarship to over 2000 students from her constituency.
She has constructed and rehabilitated not less than ten roads as part of her constituency development program.
She is one of the few senators from the southeast
that have sponsored bills targeted at the
development of the region . They are – the South east Development commission bill , Establishment of
the Federal University of Aquatic Studies in
Anambra state bill ,
and the Onitsha Dry Port
motion .

Senator Oduah has well as a senator
representing Anambra north, why shouldn ’t she be given the party’s ticket to continue the good work ? There is no need to change a winning team.
Even beyond Anambra North, Ndi Igbo via our great party APGA in general need more voice in the hollow red chambers of the Senate.

Short Story by Ozoekwe Dominic Ifesinachi 07032909591 This is a story highlighting the social issue of Environmental Pollution. Ada and Uche are in traffic in Onitsha, a densely populated city southeast Nigeria. Looking at the amount on "waterproof" waste on road and in the gutters, Ada said to Uche "Onitsha may contribute immensely to the destruction of the Earth through plastic pollution. These waste in the gutters flow into the Niger and find their way into the Atlantic ocean. Plastic is non-biodegradable therefore remains within the ocean for years". Uche nodded and said "Apart from that, fishes feed on the plastic and we in turn feed on the fishes and water cycle may bring back plastic in all forms of water you drink. Which other end time is greater than eating and drinking plastic". " My dear, its terrible. I read somewhere that, the "waterproofs, pure water sachet, takeaway" going into the River Niger from Onitsha contributes to the over 1 Billion tons of plastic that goes into the ocean every year". "What?, With this rate worldwide, in years to come fishes would die off, water cycle is impeded. Human life is in trouble". "I think one little solution to slow this is that people stop throwing waste into the gutters and on the road. General use of paper bags instead of plastic bags will help too". "Yes, paper bags will decay easily and also I think the gutter should cleared regularly and the waste burned" . "So true Uche, these three solutions we just said will go a long way to balance the ecosystem here". "Yes o,only if our people implement them" . Uche replied as he turned on the car radio to listen to the hourly news update.

Timeline of Onitsha City Development (Post Independent – Civil War 1960-1970)

October 1960 – Onitsha is part of Independent Nigeria.

1960 – Onitsha – Obosi land tussle gets intense. Many casualties recorded.

December 1965 – The Niger Bridge is completed and commissioned. The construction started in 1964 by French company, Dumez, cost £6.75 Million.

May 27th 1967 – The Federal Military Government divides Eastern Nigeria into three to cut the power of the Igbos. The new states became Rivers State, South Eastern State and the Igbo-secluded East Central State. Onitsha would fall into the East Central State with her son, Anthony Ukpabi Asika becoming the Administrator.

May 1967 – Onitsha is part of an “independent” Biafra. The Governor of Eastern Nigeria, Chukwuemeka Ojukwu, had a fallout with the Federal Military Government and would declare his territory independent of Nigeria.

6th July 1967 – The Federal Government declares war on Biafra. Fear grips the residents of Onitsha. Most European presence in Onitsha was evacuated by the Federal Government. Those that refused to leave the city were forced to do so.

September 1967 – Niger Bridge burns. As the Nigerian Army matched to occupy the Mid West, retreating Biafran soldiers had to restrict their movement into the east by burning down the Niger Bridge and trapping them at the Asaba side of the Niger. Most residents of Onitsha deserted the city for safer places further inland.

October 1967 – The Nigerian Army, under Murtala Mohammed, crossed over on boat to Onitsha from Asaba. They burnt Onitsha main market to the ground and looted valuables from the market. As they were doing this the Biafran army had more time to take position and attack the Nigerian soldiers. This event was the termed “the First Onitsha Invasion” and was victorious on the Biafran side.
November 1967 – USSR-aided Nigeria warplanes began flying and bombing towns around Onitsha.
March 1968 – The Second Onitsha Invasion. With the failure of the Nigerian side to win over Onitsha, they retreated to the West before crossing back east of the Niger at Idah in January 1968. From Idah, Murtala Mohammed led the Nigerian side to Enugu. After getting Enugu down, they proceeded West to Awka en route Onitsha. They finally reached Onitsha in March 1968 and after a fierce battle, the Biafran side was forced to retreat to Nnewi. Onitsha fell to the Nigerian side.

1970 – War ends. Onitsha had been devastated. The markets had been burn to the ground; houses shattered. Returnees to the city were broken. The Federal Government would, through the Administrator Asika, try rebuilding the city. The richest man in the city had £20. The beginning of a “new Onitsha”!

Timeline of Onitsha City Development (Colonial Era 1900 - 1960)

By the end of the 19th Century and early 20th Century, Onitsha City developed rapidly along the Niger: Onitsha had become a British Administrative town and hence British offices and European residents had started sprouting at the Ozalla – an area south of Onitsha, down to the Anambra River, and water through by the Nkisi Stream. The area was called “European Quarters” (Present-day GRA, Onitsha). The Sierra Leoneans and new Onitsha converts developed and lived in Ogbe Umu Onicha; the Hausas owned Ogbe Awusa; the Nupes lived in Ama Nupe while tribes of present-day Delta State inhabited Ogbe-Ijaw (Ogbe Ukwu). The Eastern Igbos came after the development of the new waterside city (Otu Onitsha).

1900 – Onitsha becomes part of the British colonial Southern Nigeria Protectorate.

1902 – The Roman Catholic Mission had its first major success in the Inland Town as young Irish Priest, Fr. Joseph Shanahan establishes the Ogboli Mission. The Ogboli Mission would later grow to become present-day’s indigenous St. Mary’s Church.

1906 – The Southern protectorate united with Lagos and were divided into Eastern Province (Capital In Calabar), Central Province (Capital in Warri) and Western Province (Capital in Lagos). The Central Province included the Onitsha District (roughly all of Present-day Anambra State) and had a District Officer residing in the town and overseeing the district (there were Assistant District Officers though – One lived in Nnewi). The most popular D.O in Onitsha was Captain D. O’Connor.

c. 1906 – First Bridge built across the Nkisi Stream. The Marina road may have been constructed during the same period. Other roads constructed between 1906 and the 1920s are Old Market Road and New Market Road (connecting the trade points to the rest of the region), Egerton Road (named after Sir Walter Egerton Governor of Southern Nigeria), Moor Street (After first Governor of Southern Nigeria Ralph Moor), Venn Road (Maybe named after anti-slavery Anglican priest Henry Venn) etc.

1910s – American companies and missionaries arrive Onitsha. They developed and lived in the area north of the Ose Okwuodu Market and south of the Inland Town bordering the European Quarters. The area is till date called “American Quarters.”

1920s – Odoakpu develops. From the name, the place was originally a huge farm of cassava. But as the city expanded from the Waterside Odoakpu would be caught in the urban sprawl. Onitsha men, including sons of wealthy Onitsha man, Modebe, (Modebe Avenue bears the family name) began investing in real estate. Soon, Odoakpu had become the new quarters for neighboring Igbo towns, especially the Nnewi people who became the commercial gurus in the city.

1925 - First secondary school in Igboland Nigeria, Dennis Memorial Grammar School is established by the CMS. The school is named after Archdeacon TJ Dennis.

1930s – Fegge develops. As the population of Onitsha began increase with the rapid influx of the Eastern Igbos, the Government felt the need to plan a new layout. This new gridwork layout was built at the site the Nupes had stayed for decades. Fegge may be derived from the Nupe language but the Europeans called this area “Foreigners’ Layout”.

1933 - First Catholic Secondary school, Christ the King College is established in Onitsha by Archbishop Charles Heerey.

1942 - the First all girls mission school, Queen of the Rosary College opens in Onitsha.

1945 – After World War 2 (called Agha Burma in Onitsha and other parts of Igboland -since the British Nigeria joined the British Army and where positioned at Burma/Myanmar) , the Nigerian colonial administration was still dynamic. As at 1945, Onitsha Province existed (Most parts of present-day Anambra and Enugu States where under Onitsha). The Divisions under the Onitsha Province include Awka, Awgu, Onitsha and Nsukka Divisions. Other Provinces in Eastern Nigeria were the Owerri Province, Rivers Province, Calabar Province and Ogoja Province.

1949 – Onitsha Native Authority began a project to reconstruct Main Market. Before then the market lacked shops as the structures that scattered the whole place were just corrugated iron sheets roofed with palm mats. The market was getting congested, lacked organization and posed chaos on the city.

1952 – Government of Eastern Nigeria gives the approval for the reconstruction of Main Market.

1956 – the actual rebuilding of the Main Market began.
1958 - the city is enjoying self-goverance within the Eastern Region of Nigeria away from Britain.

Late 1950s - Onitsha has become a model. Apart from the Otu Onitsha (Waterside city) region, the Enu Onitsha (Inland Town) has started developing rapidly with European styled buildings within the town. The present-day principal axis from the DMGS roundabout - Awka Road, Oguta Road, Upper New Market Road and Ozalla Road - was already in place. A Road (possibly Old Enugu-Onitsha Road) has connected Onitsha to the now Coal-rich Capital of the Region Enugu. The Water works was already functioning up the Nkisi Stream, providing water for the Onitsha municipality. Parks, hotels and clubs makes the city lively. Preparations are being made to construct a bridge over the Niger to connect the Eastern and Western Regions in Onitsha and Asaba respectively. The system of crossing over the River Niger is by the use of ferries or cheaper Ponteau raft (logs of woods that may float in water)

1960 - Nigeria gains independence as Onitsha celebrates her great son, Nnamdi Azikiwe.

Timeline of Onitsha City Development (19th century)

1830s – First British explorers – The lander Brothers (Richard and John); MacGregor Laird arrive Onitsha. Laird Port was established.

1850s – Dr. William Baike (Scottish explorer and naturalist) may have arrived Onitsha as he mentioned in his

1854 book “Narrative of an Exploring Voyage up the Rivers Kwora and Binue”. His name “Baike” would become synonymous to the English Language in Igbo – Bekee.

1857 – British vessel(Commanded by Baike), Dayspring anchors at Laird Port, Onitsha to established in British Trade Station in Onitsha. Ajayi Crowther established the CMS mission; W.B Baike would speak to the Obi of Onitsha, Akazue, for the British Government; Captain Grant would negotiate for commerce. Freed Sierra Leonean-Igbo Slave, Rev. John Christopher Taylor would remain in Onitsha to run the CMS mission and starts educating the natives. The area along the River Niger was mostly uninhabited as the Onitsha main town was about 2 – 3 miles from the Waterside.

November 23 1857 – Odoje – Umudei clash over land. Other internal disputes occurred due to disagreement with where to allocate for trading with the Sierra Leoneans.

Late 1857 – Otu Nkwo (present-day Main Market) was founded around the British trade Station to accommodate the Sierra Leonean traders, European traders, later Hausa-Nupe traders (the great influx of these Northern elements was highest towards the end of the 19th Century) and the native Onitsha traders. This brought the first feeling of a cosmopolitan Onitsha.

Jan – Feb 1858 – Onitsha-Ogidi war. The two towns had had clashes from the previous year. The Onitsha people had more casualties.

April 1858 – First Onitsha man – Okosi – converts to Christianity under Rev. J.C Taylor.

1860s – A number of Onitsha people had convert to Christianity and had embraced education. Most people educated during this era would later become indigenous figures in colonial Nigeria.

1873 – Smallpox breaks out in Onitsha. Most people that were saved were the native educated Christians that lived at the Waterside. Many Onitsha people would convert to Christianity during this period.

1874 - Obi Akazue dies. The new king, Obi Anazonwu would see the development of Onitsha from just a small town to a British territory.

1879 - George Taubman Goldie, a British administrator cum businessman sought to unite all British interest on the Niger into one company thus, the founding of the United African Company (UAC) with headquarters in Onitsha.

1879 – British war boats under G.T Goldie bombard and destroy Onitsha due to the assault the European residents reported from the natives.

Late 1870s - Omu Nwagboka (known as the Queen of Onitsha), the leader of the market women in Onitsha would oversee the European trade within Onitsha.

Early 1880s - French companies established in Onitsha making it difficult for the British to have territorial rights over Onitsha.

1885 - French missionaries arrive Onitsha. Led by Rev. Fr. Lutz, the Roman Catholic French missionaries met with Obi Anazonwu.

1885 - the British would lay claims to Onitsha during the Berlin Conference. They had earlier bribed the French companies in the Niger out.

1886 - German agent, Herr Hoenigsberg, sent by Otto Von Bismarck to disrupt activities of the National African Company (renamed from UAC in 1881) on the Niger and seek treaties between the Niger people and Germany was arrested in Onitsha. The Germans still fought to claim Onitsha up until 1890.

1886 - To avoid the Germans from taking over, the NAC would involve the British Government thereby renaming the National African Company to the Royal Niger Company. The British government would thereafter sign treaties with the local chiefs on the Niger including Obi Anazonwu of Onitsha.

1889 - the Royal Niger Company could no more resist the state-supported French and German protectorates. The revoked their charter.

1st January 1900 - the RNC sold off its territories £865,000 to the British Government, hence the fall of Onitsha to British rule under the Southern Nigeria Protectorate. British indirect rule begins in Onitsha as they install catechist, Samuel Okosi as Obi of Onitsha following the death of Obi Anazonwu in the previous year - 1899.
