In Sūrat al-Qaf, Āyāt 31-35, Allāh mentions that Jannah will be brought near the pious people and its people will have four characteristics, these are:

1) They are always turning to Allāh with sincere repentance. They always return to Allāh after committing sins and start to obey and remember Allāh. Mujāhid said the repentant one is the one who asks forgiveness when he remembers his sins while he is alone. And Sa’īd bin al-Musaiyab said: “He is the one who commits sin, repents, commits again, and repents again.”

2) They preserve their covenant with Allāh. Ibn ‘Abbās said, whatever Allāh orders him to do, he does it. Qatādah said: “It is he who preserves the rights and blessings granted to him by Allāh.” The soul has two special abilities: the power to ask and the power to preserve. The repentant person uses his power of asking to ask forgiveness from Allāh, to return to Him, seek His pleasure and obey Him. The power of preserving is found in keeping himself away from sins and all that is forbidden. The repentant person comes nearer to Allāh by obeying Him.

3) They fear Allāh. Allāh says:

مَّنْ خَشِيَ الرَّحْمَٰنَ بِالْغَيْبِ

“Who feared the Most Merciful unseen.” [50:33]

This Āyāh declares the Existence, Divinity, and Power of Allāh and His knowledge of every detail of His servants’ conditions, His Books, Messengers, orders and prohibitions. His promise, threat, and standing before Him on the Day of Resurrection.

4) Then Allāh continues and says:

وَجَاءَ بِقَلْبٍ مُّنِيبٍ

“And came with a heart returning [in repentance].” [50:33]

Ibn ‘Abbās said: “He is far from sins and rushes to obey Allāh. The reality of repentance is to devote the heart to obedience, love, and striving to be near to Allāh.”

Allāh then mentioned the reward of the one who has these attributes. Allāh said:

ادْخُلُوهَا بِسَلَامٍ ۖ ذَٰلِكَ يَوْمُ الْخُلُودِ لَهُم مَّا يَشَاءُونَ فِيهَا وَلَدَيْنَا مَزِيدٌ

“Enter it in peace. This is the Day of Eternity. They will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more.” [50:34-35]

— Refer to Ibn al-Qayyim’s “al-Fawā’id” (pp. 21-22).
