Career / Re: Should I Quit My #42,500 Job And Establish My Computer Business Centre? by The10thMan(m): 8:13am On Aug 21, 2019 |
If you can keep both income streams then do so. Keep the job and still run your business center where possible. Multiple streams of income is what everyone is expected to develop and have. If you could as a matter of fact, add another service to the computer center. Perhaps also sell snacks/drinks to customers and so on. Where possible sell stationery/computer ink etc. if you think there is a market for it there. As a matter of fact you can add Phone repairs to the center. Look around and scale the business appropriately. Each human being when it comes to financial status we all have a financial equation following us. The equation is simple: (Active and Passive Income from Assets/Investments etc) - (Expenses from Liabilities) = Your financial status or financial equation. The trick is to try to increase the income angle and make it multiple so that you have (Income from Source A + Income from Source B + Income from Source C + ............Income from Source x) - (Expenses/Liabilities) = Wealth creation. Daily, I do this and work on developing multiple income streams. I have my job (a superb one) and I run my businesses. Yes, businesses. Plural. Ask Dangote how he runs is conglomerate. I enjoy being an entrepreneur, going for meetings, discussing, bargaining and growing a business enterprise. Entrepreneurship is my hobby as a matter of fact. So if you can successfully run the business and still be at work, why not. The Extra 45,000 Naira can be useful for other things. It is only if the business requires your full attention (when it is grown and matured) you might then consider leaving the job to face it. But you can try other means of managing the business while working. Explore other means of keeping both. Leaving should be a last option. 3 Likes |
Business / Re: Package Delivery Problems: USPS And NIPOST by The10thMan(m): 6:47am On Jul 04, 2019 |
NIPOST (EMS) PARCEL RECEIVER FEES I have ordered certain equipment and items for an ongoing business venture through Ali Express and it was delivered at the Victoria Island Post Office. I usually get calls or text messages from NIPOST personnel informing me about the arrival/delivery of the goods. However, the Post Office Officials keep demanding for a 'fee' and claiming they establish the fee based on the weight of the goods. Now these fees are not officially receipted and no document is issued by these NIPOST staff. At least something to show that as a public servant, they have legally collected money from a citizen for approved administrative services and for the citizen to show he/she has paid a service fee to the Government. Recently, I have had a lot of arguments with them on this. The worry is, if one refuses to pay, they might mark one's name and goods, then frustrate future efforts at importing anything. This money they ask for is seemingly illegal. Funny thing is they even send SMS to notify you of the parcel and the fee they expect you to pay. Who else experiences this at the Nigerian Postal Service? What I try to do is negotiate what ever the NIPOST Staff are asking for, the moment it goes above 500 Naira. Are there better ways of handling this? |
Business / Re: Top 17 Ways On How To Start And Run A Successful Bar Business In Nigeria by The10thMan(m): 5:20pm On May 28, 2019 |
My current area of interest. Location has been the issue with this business. I am seriously looking up to set up a Lounge, Bar and Restaurant that I want to expand from the Island to the Mainland. I cannot believe I have been searching for property to purchase around Sangotedo/Eputu/Lakowe Axis for 3 Months now without success. It is either the properties have no Valid Documents or they fall under Government Acquired Land. I never knew the Government Held so much land in my life. Land they do not have plans for, and even if they do, they hardly execute in an aesthetically pleasant way. You did analyses on only beer as a drink. This is the one that gives the least profit in the business, from my analyses. More money is made on wines and spirits than beer. Also, if you make it a Bar, Lounge and Restaurant, a lot of profit is made from the food sales. Ill get a good location and start this. Proposed design will be inspired by Orange Room Lounge, Zee Lounge, Pharm City and some other respectable places.

Business / Re: How Were You Able To Raise Up The Desired Capital To Set Up Your Business? by The10thMan(m): 7:53pm On Feb 11, 2019 |
I was lucky to have eventually had a job that paid fairly well. I worked in the banking sector for a while where I was able to see first hand what entrepreneurship looked like. We were chasing young men to collect loans as part of our target. Upon leaving to a higher paying job, I set aside savings to set up a business. The business was registered with about 50k at CAC even though I did not run it for a while, I had the business name secured and was waiting for seed/venture capital. When I was ready, I started with freelancing at first handling small components of major jobs. Made some money extra money, then started growing my own company. Training myself, improving my skills.Generally you can raise capital by some interesting ways including: 1. Personal Savings (from your job, other income sources, learn a skill/service to offer and get paid for); 2. Finding an Investor/Venture Partner (Selling Equity/percentage of the business); 3. Apply for a Loan; 4. Join a Savings/Cooperative Group; 5. Ask Family/Friends for Assistance. Personally, I discovered that I was lucky to be able to raise capital through option 1. Recently, work staff cooperative has been important in no small measure, especially when it comes to acquiring real estate. I want to believe that if one knew a skill (handiwork/handicraft) that required getting paid for, one could make some income, set up something small and grow it from there. It is why some form of artisanal skills are important e.g. online skills, coding, etc. are important. You dont need special offices etc to offer your handiwork skills for earnings/income. Perhaps we now need the reawakening of various platforms including DRAGON'S DEN etc. to encourage entrepreneurs. Or perhaps a topic is created for people with start up/entrepreneurial ideas posting their business ideas and seeking for/attracting potential interested investors to invest for some equity of the business. Of course it will involve proper in-depth investigation and documentation. However, this will also be limited by unseriousness and people trying to take undue advantage of one another. A particular individual who posted his number sometime ago about a proposed Lounge/Bar/Restaurant Business in Lagos Island was called for weeks on end, with his number unavailable. Yet he was seeking for investors. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Jamal090: Of course. That is the simple definition of the word ''RISK''. Uncertainties. I mean isn't that fundamental knowledge? Even without being said. However, even uncertainties can be being managed. That there are risks does not mean the business must eventually fail. The question then is were people prepared for the uncertainties? |

Yoighaman: If these are necessary costs, then these must have to be borne. If they are not, then try reducing these by changing patterns or seeking alternatives as long as it doesn't drastically affect your business/quality of product/service. Do you understand the LEAN principle? Daily saving culture is a good idea. Daily Operating Cost and Daily Revenue must be accounted for where possible to know how the business is doing. While this is difficult for my type of business which is more of professional intellectual service, with payments taking months to come, I still had to break these down to know how to control my costs. It is all good experience anyway. For future ventures. 4 Likes 1 Share |

whytediamond: A particular client got a job from a Down Stream Oil and Gas Company without doing his homework. Eventually when he noticed he coundn't handle it he called for assistance. After all discussions were held and terms agreed, he decided to subcontract to us to handle. We commenced the process with proper terms of reference and delivery timelines. Few days latter he calls saying we should refund his money. He has found an easier way to do it. It was a big problem. But we obliged and sent him his money. We did not want issues with the main client who gave him the contract as we were also trying to directly become one of their vendors. Few days latter the same contractor calls us to beg that we should please come help them execute the job. Apologizing about how they were deceived, bla bla bla. We told our lawyers to add a clause to the Terms of Reference. Should they interfere again at various stages we keep various percentages of the mobilization as our inconvenience fee. And we insisted on 70% mobilization. And this is even a very simple case. There are other complicated and pitiful cases. It is a tough world out there sailing in rough seas with sharks and other predators. But keep sailing. [s][/s] 25 Likes |

OdiaI: Caution is needed truly especially because entrepreneurs do not want to spoil future business opportunities. It is a classic situation that a lot of businesses in Nigeria use. They know most entrepreneurs will not want to spoil business relationships/future prospects because of one that ''simply went sour''. So the question is when does one go all out for battle? And how are you sure it wont linger for a while should it become a legal issue? It a callousness that many entrepreneurs have to deal with, especially in Nigeria where laws are not modern and not fully enforced. |
Business / Re: If You're Not Ready For Heartbreaks, Never Start Up A Business by The10thMan(m): 7:05pm On Jan 31, 2019 |
Rubbiish: Businesses are not that bad. What I have noticed is that the Nigerian environment automatically compels you to monitor your business every minute. If you take your eyes of it for one minute, your staff or customers try to cheat you. The environment puts a lot of pressure on you as an entrepreneur. If you cannot monitor, then you need people you can trust to monitor/manage the business. But how many Nigerians are trustworthy? The system puts a lot of pressure on businesses so much that the pressure is passed onto the customers, leading to poor service and then a positive feedback ensues affecting the business. In other instances, expectations are too high for the budding business. And in a society where most people do not understand entrepreneurship and cash-flow, etc. I have seen people expect too much from a business where they are spending too much on labor, land/rent and raw materials among other overheads. It is not a simple thing analyzing why businesses struggle or fail. However, it is common knowledge that every new business goes through the ''storm'' phase. 15 Likes 2 Shares |

Setting up a business has its appeal. It also has its benefits. You will understand why a lot of Civil Servants who retire and are paid gratuities etc. cannot successfully manage a business. The conflict of interest rule does not allow them run a business. After 35 years of handling a minute component of an organization, they try to delve into business. But how do you give what you do not have unless you want to deceive yourself or other people? It requires effort and experience. You need to understand the business to a very large extent. The applicable regulations, direct and indirect influences of market forces, competitors, the associated services, sourcing raw materials/inputs,the processes of creating your output, your type of customers, your type of staff, the strength, weakness, opportunities and threats of/to the business, etc. You need to have these and more covered before venturing. You could also decide to have a mentor. Before starting, have conversations with people in the business. Visit various same/similar ventures like a customer and ask questions. Additionally, business is done to create value of some sort. Every organisation exists to create value. Even NGOs. You have to enjoy the process of meeting people's needs. It wont be easy, especially at take off stage. You will need to understand cash flow, basic book keeping, business terms like invoice, quotation etc. depending on your type of business. The general rule is be sure to know what you are getting into before getting into it. 27 Likes |

uncjay: Sir, I apologize for the delayed reply. With respect to the PM, I am afraid I cannot receive emails because I did not open the account conventionally. Hence, no mail is attached to this account per se. With regards the mentoring issue, I am currently fully engaged with work that I do. I am also very engaged in the personal business that I run that I barely have time for myself. So, you see, I am in a fix here. I can only advice that you look out for opportunities even on small scale and grow the business. First what are you passionate about? You want to do what you do because it first gives you joy, secondly it gives you the satisfaction of solving a problem while at the same time earning you money. However, note that this ''do what you love'' is a sentiment that is going away. Now, between You and I, people do not give a hoot about your love/passion, if it does not have value or create value. They wont pay for what you love but pay for what they love and want (goods, services they desire). So note that this sentiment of YOU MUST DO WHAT YOU LOVE is loosing appeal. For now it is YOU MUST LEARN TO LOVE WHAT YOU DO. Let no one tell me, for instance, that Dangote loved Cement, and a Refinery, and Soup Seasoning and Spaghetti, etc. as a young man that is why he is successful. In your immediate environment or even beyond, what are the opportunities you see? This is the biggest skill/gift necessary. Seeing opportunities to take due advantage of, by first subjecting the business opportunity to the C.E.N.T.S Principle to see its viability. It is this keen interest and skill that you need to develop. If you have an email address you are not bothered about dropping here, then do so. I can send you a mail. However, like I hinted, I do not sincerely think I will be chanced to do this effectively. 7 Likes |

What I am trying to get at is what your passion is. Then skills within your area(s) of interest will be provided/suggested for you. Ultimately, you learn to do what you love and it pays you money. TissuePaper:Cc: Olalekank austineaddy Olalekank Exactly. But I dont think Ubereats is in Nigeria yet or is it? Uber has a faulty business model for Nigeria. But that is a topic for another day. A little review into the Nigerian society shows that a lot of Nigerian's hardly trust people with their food. However, we also realized that this is changing especially in the Island axis (Victoria Island, Lekki, Ajah, Ikoyi etc.) where people now freely allow smoothies, juices, salads and food from restaurants like Lydia's Place, Jevnik , Domino's etc to be delivered to them right at their desks in offices during lunch time. With this growing trend, this could be a viable venture to go into. The market is huge! Especially since: i.Restaurants have to pay/subscribe to be on the platform and; ii.The buyers of the meals/food have to pay to get their food delivered. Money is split between the App owner and the delivery personnel. Some of the conditions include the fact that a lot of restaurants have to take their businesses online/digital. So that people can place orders and pay for the meals through their phones, and the restaurants can receive the orders and work on it. In doordash when the food/meal is ready, the restaurants click on their app to indicate this to the driver, who then goes to pick it up and then delivers to the ordering customer. 5 Likes 1 Share |

austineaddy: It is a food delivery service Application. It is like Uber or Taxify, but for food delivery. Restaurants register with doordash. Door-dash has an app people can download. In the App they find a restaurant, go through the menu, order for food and pay for the delivery of the food. The doordash driver gets a request for a pick up at the specific restaurant,he picks up the food and delivers to the address of the customer. Upon delivery, his account gets credited. This service isnt in Nigeria yet in this form. 5 Likes |
