Am glad d doctors have exibited dat same pride here 2. So every1 can see wat nurses pass through. In other issues, its not doctors vs nurses, it is doctors vs every other health profesional. Dey cant accept dat everyone else went 2 skool 2 obtaind a degree 2.

[quote author=Dr9ce]I carefully went through your write up...u may be right on some issues but i ll disagree with u on some
1. You said doctors are arrogant and believe they can order nurses around(paraphrased)...i believe this is an issue that has to do with complex...if you know your job as a nurse then you wont see it as merely carrying out the doctor's instruction(which you ought to) but as a team player in restoring health to the patient in question, afterall what you write in your nursing records are the things you observed during your shift and of course the management plan outlined by the doctor(s) for the patients for the nurses to execute.
2. You said the ward is a battle ground...i also disagree...it is whatever you make it. some doctors may be rude, but if there is no crack in the wall the lizard cant gain entry....i had an experience with a nurse who called me in d middle of the night that my attention was needed on d ward, when i asked her what d problem was..she said a patient complained of weakness and dizziness...behold when i got to d ward this patient had no records of her vital signs..not even temperature...by the time i checked her BP..i discoverd she was in shock so i commenced resuscitation...would have been wrong to be angry with that nurse who was busy writing nursing process and records while a patient was dying on her ward...and who didnt even join me in the process?
3.You equally said u work as much as doctors do......hmmmm, lets make this comparism...a nurse resumes for morning duty 7:30am and hands over to afternoon shift by 1pm.....afternoon shift runs till 7:30pm....while night runs till the following morning and if u are on night duty for 7days,then you get 7days off work
Now compare to a doctor who resumes 8am attends to patient till 4pm(depends.on the unit, may be later than 4) and then if he is on call will stay behind till the next morning only to change and resume normal duties and close by 4pm that is if he is not the one on call again.....and on weekend call duty he resumes 8am on friday and leaves the hospital 4pm on monday.....do still think nurses work as much as doctors? besides nurses cover a single ward during their 7hr shift...but a doctor covers several wards including the theatre during his/her call.

perioperative and anastethic nurses also work til 4pm nd do call 2, nd their call duty alowance is smaller dan urs. in some hospitals monin shift end by 4pm and afternoon by 8pm. Talking about atending 2 patients in difrnt wards, u only go there wen ur atention is needed true or false? But a nurse is working al through

HealthThe Challenges Of Being A Nigerian Nurse by theplanmaker(op): 11:53am On Jan 21, 2013
Recently someone posted a thread on his experience in the hands of nigerian nurses, and it quickly turned into a forum for throwing insults at nigerian nurses. Someone even described them as "a bunch of semi educated savages". Well i only pray he never needs the services of a nurse. This article is not about defending the unprofessional or unethical behaviours and actions of some of my colleagues, rather it is about bringing to bare some of the challenges an average nigerian nurse faces, challenges that if not properly managed, one could lose his cool and allow anger prevail.

Before i go into these challenges proper. I want to make three things stand out. First the nigerian society as a whole does not place due emphasis on ethics and professionalism, and as such rude behaviours are not restricted to nurses only, we are treated badly everywere, wether in the banking hall, airport etc. Customer service is poor.

Secondly, not all the "nurses" you see are actually nurses expecially in private hospitals many of them are quacks trained by doctors illegally to damage the image of our beloved profession so you could refer to them as "semi educated savages" if you like.

Third, anyone can get a degree in nursing but the act and skill of being a nurse is not something any university can teach you. They'll teach you to show compassion but no one can teach you how to show compassion. So if you are wicked and ruthless by nature, being a nurse will not change you. So in my short journey in the profession, i have seen very kindhearted colleagues and i have seen some i will describe as devils.

However, To the issue proper, have you ever taken case of a sick person that is neither your friend nor relation? Its quite a frustrating task. But you may wonder isnt that what a nurse is trained and paid to do? Well that is true but consider the environment and circumstances in which a Nigerian nurse works.

Normally a nurse is suppose to care for about 5 to 7 patients at a time, but because of shortage of nurses however a nurse may end up caring for up to 20 patients at a time, leaving him/her stressed out . Just at that point a patient or patients relation decides to be insolent and rude, sometimes insulting her to her face It takes a core professional to keep his cool without shouting. So probably when that nurse attended to you, she had a lot of anger and frustration inside her.

The hospital ward is often a fierce battle ground, the major warriors being nurses and doctors. Many doctors see themselves as gods in the health sector, and believe that every other professional works for them and under them, therefore they like to treat nurses as inferior and less important, in fact as housemaids. This mentality has been so widely sold out that a lot of people see nurses as merely untrained professionals who take orders from doctors. This reasoning is of course a hopeless fallacy and gross misrepresentation of the truth.

It is considered shamefull for a nurse to allow herself to be used and abused by a doctor. Given that fact, a nurse sometimes has to deal with the pride and ego of a doctor, and in some situations tempers are let on the loose words are exchanged there is bad blood and bitterness everywere, and it all adds to the frustration and tension that a nurse experiences.

But why do doctors not vent their anger on patients too? Well they do, but it is more common to see a nurse vs patient clash than a doctor vs patient clash. This is so because it is the nurse that really spends time with the patient, if you have been on admission in a hospital before, you will recall that you only see the doctor during ward round or when his attention is required, but the nurse is always there with you during his/her shift, a span of time in which she may have many other patients to attend to.

How many of you actually remember to thank your nurse before going home? Well during your stay in the hospital nurses do certain jobs that an average person will run away from, such as passing you a bed pan to vomit, pass urine or feaces. While entertaining insults from other patients .But most patients still see a nurse role as passive, and unimportant. And only remember negative experiences. Hence on their way out they are full of praises for their doctor but hardly appreciate the nurses. Well the truth is without the nurses nobody would have admitted you into the hospital and you would not have been cared for.

Finally how much do nurses earn? Very little compared to the work they do (they work as much as doctors). But do you see them going on strike over every little inconvenience like some other health professionals? No! Because we value human life above money, although i do not blame those who are making serious efforts to leave the country i mean who wouldn't want to work in a better condition with better pay?
Christianity EtcWhat You Should Know About Christmas- Its Origin by theplanmaker(op): 4:28pm On Dec 16, 2012
Roman pagans first introduced the holiday of
Saturnalia, a week long period of lawlessness
celebrated between December 17-25. During this
period, Roman courts were closed, and Roman
law dictated that no one could be punished for
damaging property or injuring people during the
weeklong celebration. The festival began when
Roman authorities chose “an enemy of the
Roman people” to represent the “Lord of Misrule.”
Each Roman community selected a victim whom
they forced to indulge in food and other physical
pleasures throughout the week. At the festival’s
conclusion, December 25th, Roman authorities
believed they were destroying the forces of
darkness by brutally murdering this innocent man
or woman.
The ancient Greek writer poet and historian
Lucian (in his dialogue entitled Saturnalia)
describes the festival’s observance in his time. In
addition to human sacrifice, he mentions these
customs: widespread intoxication; going from
house to house while singing Unclad; molestation
and
other intimate license; and consuming human-
shaped biscuits (still produced in some English
and most German bakeries during the Christmas
season).
In the 4th century CE, Christianity imported the
Saturnalia festival hoping to take the pagan
masses in with it. Christian leaders succeeded in
converting to Christianity large numbers of
pagans by promising them that they could
continue to celebrate the Saturnalia as Christians.
The problem was that there was nothing
intrinsically Christian about Saturnalia. To remedy
this, these Christian leaders named Saturnalia’s
concluding day, December 25th, to be Jesus’
birthday, even if all biblical evidence points away
from december as the month Jesus was born.
Christians had little success, however, refining
the practices of Saturnalia. As Stephen
Nissenbaum, professor history at the University
of Massachussetts, Amherst, writes, “In return for
ensuring massive observance of the anniversary
of the Savior’s birth by assigning it to this
resonant date, the Church for its part tacitly
agreed to allow the holiday to be celebrated more
or less the way it had always been.” The earliest
Christmas holidays were celebrated by drinking,
intimate indulgence, (which is still very much in
practice) singing Unclad in the streets (a
precursor of modern caroling), etc.
The Reverend Increase Mather of Boston
observed in 1687 that “the early Christians who
first celebrated christmas on December 25 did
not do so thinking that Christ was born in that
Month, but because the Heathens’ Saturnalia was
at that time kept in Rome, and they were willing
to have those Pagan Holidays metamorphosed
into Christian ones.” Because of its known
pagan origin, Christmas was banned by the
Puritans and its observance was illegal in
Massachusetts between 1659 and 1681.
However, Christmas was and still is celebrated by
most Christians.
Some of the most depraved customs of the
Saturnalia carnival were intentionally revived by
the Catholic Church in 1466 when Pope Paul II,
for the amusement of his Roman citizens, forced
Jews to race Unclad through the streets of the city.
An eyewitness account reports, “Before they were
to run, the Jews were richly fed, so as to make the
race more difficult for them and at the same time
more amusing for spectators. They ran… amid
Rome’s taunting shrieks and peals of laughter,
while the Holy Father stood upon a richly
ornamented balcony and laughed heartily.”
. As part of the Saturnalia carnival throughout
the 18th and 19th centuries CE, rabbis of the
ghetto in Rome were forced to wear clownish
outfits and march through the city streets to the
jeers of the crowd, pelted by a variety of missiles.
When the Jewish community of Rome sent a
petition in1836 to Pope Gregory XVI begging him
to stop the annual Saturnalia abuse of the Jewish
community, he responded, “It is not opportune to
make any innovation.” On December 25, 1881,
Christian leaders whipped the Polish masses into
Antisemitic frenzies that led to riots across the
country. In Warsaw 12 Jews were brutally
murdered, huge numbers maimed, and many
Jewish women were Molested. Two million rubles
worth of property was destroyed.
Christmas today may not actually be what it use to
be, but most of this pagan practices have been kept
ever since, although people engage in it thinking
that "Jesus is the reason for the season". But some
important questions arise - is this celebration from
pagan origin acceptable to God or Jesus christ? Or
are we simply eating candy picked from the gutters?
Given the view of Jesus and his early disciples on
birthday celebration, would Jesus approve of the
celebration of his birthday? Every individual is
allowed to form his own opinion

Career5 Myths About Nursing by theplanmaker(op): 10:19am On Dec 10, 2012
When it comes to nurses, some still have visions of sexy women walking through hospital hallways in tight-white dresses and little white caps. No surprises there! That's just one of the many media stereotypes people have developed about the nursing profession over the years. While there are, of course, attractive women in the field, not all nurses are 'sexy', not all where tight white dresses and not all are women. Here are five more myths that nurses have to defy every day:

1. Nurses Are Merely Doctors' Helpers

Unfortunately, this myth has stood the test of time. Far from being gofers, nurses diagnose and treat patients every day. But aside from these, they are also in charge of patient advocacy and education so you know you're in the right hands. Nurses see dozens of patients every day, work incredibly long hours and have very little time for themselves. The next time you see a nurse, don't think of him or her as a doctor's lackey, but as someone skilled in their chosen profession.

2. Nurses Want to Be Doctors

They aren't medical school drop-outs or people that couldn't make the cut. Nurses are in the profession because they are passionate about their careers. While doctors are trained to diagnose and treat symptoms, nurses are trained to provide holistic health care. This training is what makes your nurse stop by your bedside to chat as compared to a doctor who is in and out of your room in five minutes.

3. Nurses  Are Women

While it's true that the majority of people in the field are women, there are also men in nursing. About six percent of the profession is made up of the male gender, and these men are extremely competent at their jobs. Unfortunately, popular television shows continue to perpetuate this myth. Men are just as capable of nursing as women. And they are passionate about it too! The next time you see a nurse, don't concern yourself with his or her gender. Be mindful of the care that nurse can provide.

4. Nurses Aren't as Smart as Doctors

Registered nurses spend at least four years in school and many still choose to advance their nursing education. Nurses must successfully complete rigorous schooling, survive clinicals and be able to think quickly on their feet. Your nurse is just as intelligent and no less competent than your physician. Nurses teach, perform research, publish papers in journals, diagnose patients, treat illnesses and administer medication. Don't underestimate your nurse. We made it through an intense training program in order to become licensed.

5. A Nurse Is a Nurse

Are you one of the many people who think that a nurse is a nurse, period? Just as there's a difference between a pediatrician and a gynecologist, nurses hold different responsibilities and choose different career paths. A pediatric nurse, for example, has specialized knowledge when it comes to children's health. There are a variety of job opportunities within the field, and most require specialized training beyond four years of nursing school. Many nurses have undertaken online MSN programs in order to further their careers. There are different nursing specialties to suit the care you needed.

It's unfortunate that the nursing profession is steeped in such deep-seeded stereotypes. If you are considering a career in nursing, you should know that you are entering a field that is ripe with opportunity and personal fulfillment. Don't buy into the misconceptions because nursing is a vast and exciting career

fun. After all the clubbing and drinking, he
lodged me in a hotel somewhere in Obalende. I
felt sort of safe with him. We did not have sex,
but he made sweet love to me and touched me
in places I had never ever imagined.
"He kissed me passionately but guess what?
He did not have sex with me. We did all sorts
but there was no penetration. So, to an
extent, I trusted he was a good person to be
around with. I did not know that it was all part
of the plan.
"He gave me N10,000 and put me in a cab to go
home the next morning. We kept talking and
chatting and sending naked pictures to each
other and he told me naughty things of how he
wanted to whisper things in my ear, I blushed.
We didn't see for two weeks and that was
because his wife just came back from Turkey.
"One faithful evening, he pinged me that he was
organising a beach party/boat cruise and that
he would love for me to be his date and that he
wanted to open a BBM chat, as a medium for
his friends and my friends to interact. I was
excited about it, I just wanted to have fun. I
was able to get five of my very hot friends.
"The BBM group opened and we got chatting. I
also realise that majority of them were married
and working in reputable firms. It was fun and
we didn't mind if they were married, we just
wanted to have fun, as well as some other girls
apart from my friends in the group.
"We chatted exclusively, sent pictures to the
BBM group to introduce ourselves, and we had
opened group conversations pending the beach
party. And as excited as we were, we went
shoping for nice sexy beach wears.
"The D-day finally came, we all assembled at
the Lagos Island Boat Club. I was wowed
because it was a high class party. We were
cruising in a boat loaded with goodies drinks
and hot babes, and as well 'MARRIED MEN'. I did
not care, I just said in my mind that I would not
roll with married men anymore after this, that
for now, all I wanted to do was to catch some
fun. After all, I wasn't paying bills.
"We got there, it was a private beach resort.
Most of the beach facilities I got to see there
were owned by multinational companies. We got
out of the boat, and went to where we were
partying. It was a duplex made with wood. It
was a very nice setting.
"I felt comfortable because it even had a fence
around it separating it from other beach
houses around. So, there was privacy and of
course bouncers (heavy looking guys)
guarding the place. I said to myself, this must
be heaven, I must be dreaming.
"Anyways, we felt free with each other
because we had been chatting. It was 5:30pm
and the party just started. We had drinks
flowing from the private bar tender which
happens to be owned by one of the men in the
group. Reality struck when I realised that I was
feeling dizzy and feeling really funny and light
headed. Not only me, but other girls around me
too noticed there was something strange
about it.
"I was also feeling Hot as hell! I had been
drugged. They monitored us and when they
knew the drug had really gone deep into our
system, they moved us up into the main beach
house. I could still see faces, but was too weak
and Hot to react.
"Mr B, the man who took me clubbing, carried
me in his hands like a sacrifice and put me down
on the floor just as other men also did with
their girls. We were eight in numbers; 8 girls, 8
guys, and they all stripped us down and had
sex with us.
"I enjoyed it a bit because I was Hot. It was a
mixed feeling because I cried, I moaned, but I did
not know how many times he came into me. He
pounded me hard. I was dizzy, but he grabbed
me with force. All I could notice was the
wedding ring on his finger. I thought of how
wicked and miserable some married can be.
How inhuman and heartless they could be.
"All of them took turns in switching partners
and slept with all of us. I passed out. That was
the last thing I could remember. I felt water
poured on me. I noticed all the other girls
around me too were half naked and some
stark naked.
"We spent the night at the beach, but the men
were no where to be found. I looked round me
and all I could see was packs of used condoms.
I ran to pick my cloths and possibly raise an
alarm. I got dressed, found my phone with an
envelope. It contained N16,000 and a note
asking us to take N2000 each for transport.
Tears of anger and rage filled my eyes and the
girls around me as well.
"We were drugged and used like tissue paper. I
grabbed my phone and noticed a ping came in. I
checked my phone and I noticed the BBM group
had been deleted, and a message via BBM from
MR B came in. He threatened me that if I say a
word to anyone, I would regret it.
"I told him he was a bastard, and he said try it.
A picture came in, several pictures. In fact,
they were pictures of us being naked on the
floor. Pictures of the humiliating us but they
blurred the faces of the men. In total, I got 20
pictures. I was not myself for a month.
"I went back to school, I had no one to talk to.
The rest of the semester was hell for me. My
CGPA dropped drastically. It was the worst out
of the worst result I ever had.
"Till today, my friends and I have not discussed
this with anyone, but all I could do when I heard
of Cynthia's story was to narrate my own
ordeal anonymously and spread the news, the
word, and pray they see it and changed their
ways.
"I am now born again. I have given my life to
Christ. I fear men so much that I cannot even
move close to them. I still have nightmares, but
with time, God will strengthen me and I will move
on. My advice to single ladies out there is, do
not be desperate for fun. Pray to God to open
your eyes of understanding, and pray hard. He
who kneels before God will stand before kings
and queens.
"To all married women, pray hard to God to
intervene in your marriages and turn your
husbands from bad habits to and bad friends.
As for me, I do not think I ever want to get
married or date a man again. That chapter has
been closed for good in my life.
Please, do not ignore my mail. Please post it.
There are a lot of things we ladies need to
learn including you. Please post it on your blog
and save a soul. It could be your friend, sister,
cousin, neighbour.
"God bless you as you pass it on. To all
readers, I do not care if you insult me or rain
abuses at me. My job is to share this
encounter with you and save you from any
mishap. God bless you all. Amen."

ifyalways: @OP,what did u or your colleagues do to help the girls?

We've had series of stories and long epistles but NOTHING would change unless we DO something.
All we can do is treat any physical damage, and offer psychological assistance. But at this point they have been transferred to the counselling unit. Medical social workers are en route to their houses to see the parents and take appropriate steps. Let's see how it goes

afam4eva: I don't think withdrawing those girls from Adult male s the solution.
Am not suggesting that either, but parents should be extra cautious of the kind of males they allow near their daughters, and if possible their daughters shouldn't be left ALONE with α male
Familybeware of craddle-robbers by theplanmaker(op):
I resumed my normal duty at the pediatric ward today, and hoped to have a stress free and uneventful day however, that would not be the case as i noticed two young girls who weren't there when i closed yesterday, one in her early teens and the other probably 8yrs old. It wasn't time for the morning hand-over yet so i decided to have a little chat and get to know my would be patients better, i got closer, tried to be friendly but all i got from both was tears! I had to leave them alone. It was during the handing over that the admitting nurse told me that both girls had been sexually molested by adults, and i felt compelled to write this article because it was the 7th case in 3 weeks!!!
I know a lot of people do not believe that pedophilia is common in nigeria, but no month passes without a case of child molestation, and those are just the ones that are reported. Sometimes the fear of stigmatisation and shame leads to silence, but this is a dangerous path. If a molested child does not receive adequate medical and psychological attention, she could suffer terrible damage in her adult life, especially during marriage and child birth. She could suffer from one of two extremes, either she becomes "sex obsessed" and promiscuous or socially withdrawn with a phobia for intimacy and many other effects i can't discourse here .
When it comes to protecting children, there is no sure method, but these could be helpful to mothers
1)Never leave your little girl in the care of another male adult, weather he is married, or not living alone irrespective of your relationship with him,(55% of child molestation is carried out by an adult whom the child/family is familiar with ε.g uncle, neighbor, teacher etc.
2) Do not allow your children bath outside, or walk around the house naked no matter how small they are, they may arouse a pedophile!
3)Be weary of that 'uncle' that showers gifts and praises on your daughter and tries to gain her trust. Make sure your daughter is never alone with him!
4)Inculcate in ur child that it is a sin for any adult to touch her 'there', and she should scream and report any adult that attempts that.
5) Find time to talk to your kids, especially when they just return from school, or any social outing. Listen to them and make sure they talk exhaustively, and read between the lines as they talk.
6)Watch out for any unusual and unwarranted moodiness and find out the cause
7)Teach your children never to keep secretes from you, and whenever any adult tells them to keep a secrete, they should tell the adult "i don't keep secrets from my mummy"(pedophiles target children who would keep silent)
coolTell them never to follow anybody anywhere exept with your approval
9) Always have a practice section with your children, ask them questions like " if someone tries to touch you 'there' what will you do?" "What if it is that uncle you like a lot?" What if he tells you to follow him somewhere, maybe to buy ice cream? What will you do if someone tells you to keep a secret? Based on their response, you should know what to tell them.
10) When it comes to older children and teenagers, perhaps between the ages of 13-18 you could ask them directly if anyone has ever attempted to molest them sexually, and discourse ways to prevent such, try to be as friendly as possible, be a mother and a friend. From my own interview with patients, i could say that 2 out of 5 nigerian teenagers between 13 to 16 have had at least one close encounter with molestation, and majority do not tell anyone because the molester who probably is a known friend apologized and begged them to remain silent.
If your child has been molested, get help!
Mothers! Mothers!! Mothers!!! Protect your daughters, protect our next generation of women, protect our future wives and mothers!.......betwEen january 1st nd january 30 av seen 8 cases, dis issue needs more publicity, people are still obviously unaware

Dnt blame d students!!! D skools av made it possible for students to b promoted without hard Work, dey practically encourage laziness just because dey wanna make money. Students on d other hand have siezed the opportunity to enjoy demselves and and pass without stress. If these students writing ssce and jamb are dat dull, den how did they progress from jss1 to ss3? Does dat not show dat d skools have low standards? If d skools keep a standard higher dan dat of d exam bodies, den most of this students wud av repeated some classes, nd wud av become a lot more serious with their studies.
If d skools make it clear dat d only way to move forward is thru hard work nd diligent study, den d students wud hav no choice weather dere are distractions or not!

Christianity EtcThe Menace Of Churches With Loud Speakers by theplanmaker(op): 5:33pm On Aug 11, 2012
I am actually a 300level medical student in Edo state, i have lived is a hostel outside the school since my first year, and it has always been a quiet and peaceful neighborhood filled with medical students hostels.
All changed when a church moved into the street, just about 3 electric poles behind my hostel, since then it has been trouble. The church normally holds all night service on thursdays and fridays and this is a major problem because they have giant loud speakers outside the church building, and they shout on top of their voices all through the night. There has been serious complaint from occupants of hostels around and from my hostel too , so as the governor of my hostel, i went to see the pastor of the church to tender our complain and i got the embarrassment of my life. The arrogant pastor said that his prayer was disturbing us because we are all witches and wizards possessed by evil spirits, and that we should start joining his night prayers to be saved. All attempts to explain that we usually read at night fell on deaf ears.
My hostel occupants and those around have decided that we would write a petition to the police, and employ the services of a lawyer to get a court to order him to remove the speakers. Do you think this will work? Or what else can we do? Pls i need suggestions

The situation of the country saddens all of us, but these lawyers are trying to correct things in the little way they can but Some of us still have the guts to insult them and call them "jobless". The question is who is really jobless? The lawyers fighting for their country (with the law suit) or those who fight with their keypad on nairaland cursing the president to no avail? Who is more effective?we shud actually be hoping that they pull through with this........our attitude in this country is what fuels corruption
