EducationCovid-19: Ekpoma Policemen Harase Students, Burst Padlocksaway With Properties. by ThompsonJoo(op): 2:25pm On Apr 08, 2020
Mohammed Abubakar Adamu,
The Inspector-General of Police,
The Nigeria Police Force Headquarters,
Louis Edet House,
Abuja, Nigeria

Dear Sir,
HARASSMENT, UNGODLY BEHAVIOR AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL ACTS OF THE EKPOMA DIVISION POLICE FORCE IN ESAN WEST EDO STATE.

National Students Parliament (NSP) commend you sir for the adequate organization of the Nigeria Police Force in order to record violence-free society especially during this season of different agitation from regions and religions societies in the country.

NSP also want to use this opportunity to commend our service men and women for ensuring protection of lives and properties in Nigeria.

It is with a heart full of trepidation and responsibility that National Students Parliament brings to your notice a potentially explosive situation in Ekpoma, Edo State.

The Student of Ambrose Alli University of Ekpoma Community in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State has since been harassed by some men of the police forced suspected to be from the Ekpoma Police division because it's in the custom of the police force that no other person(s) comes into a division without visiting the police Division in that community.

It should be noted that sometimes February the student under the leadership of the union president led a 2000 March to the Police station after the brutalization of her members and engaged the Area commander alongside DPO which they promised to put an end to the illegal activities of the Ekpoma police Division.

The Ekpoma Police Division have always act as an Anarchy of it's own, violating rules that are prohibited by the head quarters. They no longer safe guard life's and property but rather they act as criminals under the guise of the Nigeria Police Force.

Recently, while obeying the FG directive of "stay at home" your said boys forcefully break into student apartment using dagger, axe and other tools associated with criminals without arrest warrant.
It should also be noted that the Ekpoma Police Division are known for Searching Students phones, Bursting house and properties of student, Impounding student cars, Forcing student to withdraw from the ATM, So many to mention but a few.

That student no longer live with peace of mind but with fear of the unknown not from guns’ men or Fulani but from the police force who are meant to be our friend.

The Nigeria Students Parliament Herby demand the immediate replacement of the Divisional Police Officer, Area Commander and those perpetrators are brought to book

Attached Is the video clip of the illegal act perpetrated by the Ekpoma Police Division.

We demand a swift response.

Yours in Aluta struggle.

HealthCOVID-19:- My Experience With NCDC In Edo State by ThompsonJoo(op): 10:56am On Mar 29, 2020
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN

THE IRRITABILITY OF AGENCIES TO EMERGENCY MEDICAL CARE IN THE FIGHT
AGAINST COVID-19 PANDEMIC

My little knowledge of virology reserves the fact that virus have periods of incubation before complete dissemination around the body of the host. Consequently, the rate of survival, extent of damage to body tissues and organs, as well as the recovery rate of the patient is in direct proportionality with the swiftness of diagnosis
as well as treatment. The COVID-19 pandemic is no exception; hence the need to Paramountly x-ray the relativity of the response of concerned agencies in Nigeria to the response of their counterparts who are also fighting the covid-19 pandemic across the world.

Permit me to elucidate using a sad but substantial example. Miss Hope whose full identity I will conceal for the sake of anonymity is a student of the UNIVERSITY OF BENIN who resides in Benin City and has shown
progressive symptoms descriptive of the covid-19. In search for medical care, she opts for the University of Benin teaching hospital (UBTH). Upon arrival, the nurses had told her that the facility lacked testing kits and referred her to Irrua specialist teaching hospital (ISTH). The patient who had little or no knowledge of the
description asked to be taken to there. The nurses had reportedly asked her to recharge their cell phone so they can call NCDC on her behalf; this is the same NCDC whose toll lines are free. She left the hospital, contacted some people who tried reaching the NCDC lines repeatedly but to no avail. When they finally picked up, they
promised to come pick her up at UNIBEN main gate where she patiently waited for them as at that time, sadly, they never showed up.

It is no longer abysmal to say at this point that the response of the NCDC using the Edo domain as a reference has been slow and retarded. Little wonder they still report cases confirmed in Edo to be just two (2) We do not want to make public assertions that will be regarded as unfounded but this laxity being displayed over responses of agencies to distress calls in the fight against this cruel pandemic gives the summation that the
Nigeria government and her agencies are politicizing the whole process.

There is the issue of unavailability of test kits in the hospitals even when the governments are claiming to be allocating and disbursing billions of Naira for the treatment.

As aforementioned, it is already an open secret that the figures are also being manipulated but you do not lit fire and put under your bosom else you get burnt. The secret will soon be unveiled by the rapid progression of confirmed cases in the next couple of weeks if thing continue this way. Nigerians are still going about their normal businesses thinking that the confirmed cases are still low and are not present in their geographical
areas. Nigeria as it stands lack the essential surveillance equipment’s and data base to adequately track those who have made contact with already confirmed covid-19 carriers, some of which have already started migrating to other areas.

This is the more reading. Why everyone who shows any related symptom should immediately be isolated and tested. The irritability of relevant agencies is supposed to be higher in a country without a proper surveillance system in order to adequately curtain this pandemic. What is obtainable so far in our country is in direct
opposite poles. It seems to me that the government are deliberately handling the issue with utmost neglect and nonchalance to allow the confirmed cases shoot up exponentially in order to attract more sympathy from
billionaires who will be willing to help, to allow them approve the release of more trillions from the nation's treasury and allow for looting and syphoning. We will not allow the lives of the citizens of our dear country be jeopardized on the altar of selfish gains. We want to prove this wrong, they should react faster to distress calls,
some politicians have already been tested twice for COVID-19 pandemic even as asymptomatic patients while symptomatic Nigerians are being subjected to facial scrutiny, phone call observation of symptoms and are not even allowed to test even once. It's is demeaning of our nation and revealing of failed systems and subsystems.

Let it be noted that Nigerians are known to be fighters, and we will contend earnestly to survive this struggle but definitely, "a time will come in the history of our nation when the true owners of this county,' the noble masses will purchase their freedom and liberation from this shackle of slavery And the price of ultimate redemption will be their blood making use of the tools of peaceful disobedience and non-violent resistance" (OSBEM, 2019).

We as Nigerians collectively call for improved rate of reactivity and responsiveness of all concerned authorities a we hope that our agitations will induce greater irritability in the systems set up to combat this deadly pandemic. Together we shall overcome

HealthCovid-19 And The Imminent Catastrophe For Nigeria! by ThompsonJoo(op): 1:10pm On Mar 27, 2020
Yesterday Thursday 26/03/2020, I was pulled out by some unavoidable reasons from my stay at home measure against Covid-19 which I began with my family on Thursday 19/03/2020 when I lockdown the family. I wore two pairs of hand gloves: polythene or clinical type which I covered with the cotton made type. Before wearing the hand gloves, I rubbed my own hand sanitizer and the ointment known as Aboniki on my hands and feet. I wore long sleeves shirt and jacket over it. I doubled the socks on my feet and wore a pair of laced shoes. Although I have learnt from the news over and over again that only infected persons need wear face mask, I wore my face mask and my sun glasses. I looked at the mirror and saw a young man kitted like the 12th Century Astronaut set for the moon. I laughed at the image and thought of taking a snap of me for this piece. But I felt the challenge before humanity was too much for any joke.

The time was about 1400 hours just after the downpour. The kids were in the parlour watching their usual kid channels that has helped me with some measure of peace. I emerged from my room and into the parlour. As the kids saw me, I was surprised that they didn't find my appearance funny. Instead, they asked why I didn't consider wearing a cap to cover my head. They advised that I should not even allow anyone to touch my clothes. I hoped into the car and hit the road leading from my Nyanya place to somewhere in Maitama for a very important meeting.

I'd looked forward to driving a lonely road as suggested by my street. But hitting the Abuja/Keffi Expressway, I observed that there was a serious traffic grill on the lane retuning from Abuja! The lane to Abuja wasn't freer either. It suddenly occurred to me that I may have been the only person observing the Stay At Home Covid-19 Holiday! I noticed that, as usual of our habitually turning things upside down in Naija, rather than many people wear hand gloves without face masks, it was the other way around. I saw many pedestrians, riders, drivers and passengers wearing different types of face masks but without hand gloves on at all! The streets were as busy as any other normal day. I could see people holding hands, shaking hands and living the normal Nigerian pre-covid-19 daily lifestyle!

I was ashamed as many people who never bothered to wear either the hand gloves or face masks mock and ridiculed the few who do. Those wearing such kits are called all sorts of embarrassing names like Coronavirus, Ebola, Covid-19, Virus, Corrodia Drive Us, China Disease etc! Some person became too shy to wear any protective kit as if they were protecting other's lives.

What I saw imposed a terrible imagination of the future of Covid-19 in my country on my head. I became apprehensive that majority of Nigerians obviously do not care a hoot about the ravages the pandemic is inflicting on more advanced, organized, sophisticated and better prepared countries of the world! It's is obvious that many Nigerians can only take Covid-19 seriously when they began to physically see corpses in the streets.

Only insanity will not be shaken to the spine by the manner Covid-19 has reduced the United States of America, the strongest nation of the world to a sick and dying land. With the ubiquitous pictures of freshly dead bodies constantly on TV screen and some Nigerians still boldly expressing their doubts about the existence of Covid-19 and or being boastful of baseless and idiotic allegedly divine, regional, genetic, climatic or whatever immunity can only give us an insight into how dangerously exposed and vulnerable we are as a people to the scourge of Covid-19. It's clear that it's in us that the deadliest version of religiousity powered by the crudest of stupidity enjoys intercourse with suicidal carelessness that is powered by mental incapacity.

Without trying to sound pessimistic, I think the story will be too ugly if we do not try everything humanly possible immediately to curb the spread of covid-19 in Nigeria. We're already to late to begin a catch up. Nigeria is already being swallowed up by Covid-19 unknown to many of us! Everybody must be involved in it. A pandemic that is able to bring America to its knees have the capacity to devour a sickly third world country like Nigeria a million times over. The situation of Nigeria was already helpless and hopeless before the virus arrived our shores! All we are now saying is that we should be seen doing something reasonable to help our bad situation at all.

PoliticsCOVID-19:- Decentralize All Markets Now NSP Tells EDSG by ThompsonJoo(op): 5:34pm On Mar 25, 2020
25th March 2020
His Excellency,
Godwin .N. Obaseki,
The Executive Governor,
Edo State

Through
Barr. Osarodion Ogie,
Secretary to the State Government
Edo state

Dear Sir,
COVID-19: DECENTRALISE MARKETS ACROSS ALL SENETORIAL DISTRICT NOW

I write to commend you on the Swift steps taking to reduce the further spread of COVID-19 within the state. The closure of school’s and placing embargo on more than 50 gathering is a very welcome idea as they will always say “ A STITCH IN TIME SAVES NINE’ but the question is what other means can these deadly virus spreads fast aside the aforementioned.

The Market is a very porous place that requires various persons from different walks of life which can spread this virus as fast as you can imagine. I wish to state the decentralization of market should be another step that need to be taken by the EDSG. Only those who sells perishable items should be allowed to sell and in a case of over crowdedness public school field should be used as an alternative pending on when the virus have been contained.
I also wish to state that the increase in sales of goods should be condemned by the Edo State Government as it’s a period of sober reflection not money making avenue.

I wish Edo state and Nigeria at large speedy recovery from this insurgency

PoliticsCoronavirus: No Plans To Shut Down Schools, Places Of Worship In Edo- EDSG by ThompsonJoo(op): 4:01pm On Mar 21, 2020
*Edo takes steps to ward off coronavirus, avoids panic measures*

*_…says ‘when it becomes necessary to shut down worship centres, steps will be taken’_*

*_...‘Edo hosts one of the five COVID-19 testing centres in Nigeria’_*

*_...‘Our preparation for Edo 2020 gave us a good head start’ _*

The Edo State Government has taken serious steps to ward off the outbreak of coronavirus (COVID-19) in the state, with the Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, holding extended meetings with traditional rulers, religious leaders and grassroots politicians at the weekend to harmonise strategies aimed at safeguarding the public.

The governor said Edo State was adopting the strategy of consulting these leaders because of their strong connection with the grassroots and people across all spectra of the society as well as their effectiveness in passing information and eliciting effective action to stem falsehood and panic among the people.

He said some of the actions taken include extensive consultation with traditional, religious and political leaders for intensified sensitization; setting up of isolation centres across the three senatorial districts of the state and updating of health workers’ training to deal with the peculiarities of COVID-19. Others are the reactivation of the state’s contact tracing mechanism earlier used to contain other infectious diseases such as Lassa Fever, and a strong emphasis on rigorous screening at ports of entry into the state.

Members of the Edo State Traditional Council were led to the Government House by his Royal Majesty, Omo N'Oba N'Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II. Others are Vice Chairman of the Council and Otaru of Auchi, Alhaji Aliru Momoh and the 2nd Vice Chairman of the council and Enogie of Opoji, His Royal Highness Aidenojie Ehidiamen.

Present at the meeting with religious leaders were Chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Edo State Chapter, Oriname Oyenude; President, Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Felix Omobude; ECWA/TEKAN Chairman, Rev. Lucky Osagbokhoe; President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and Archbishop of the Catholic Archdiocese of Benin, Augustine Akubeze; Chief Imam of the Benin Central Mosque, Alhaji Fatai Enabulele and Chairman OAIC, Apostle General Irekpono Omoike, among others.

According to him, “We have invaluable experience in managing infectious diseases in Edo State, especially with the management of periodic Lassa Fever outbreaks. As a result, the state government has, for the purpose of containing an outbreak of COVID-19 in the state, reactivated its isolation centres in the three senatorial districts in the state, including those at the Stella Obasanjo Hospital; Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) and General Hospital, Auchi.

“The state’s contact tracing network has also been re-activated to ensure that epidemiologists are on the standby to attend to any case that may arise. The state is also updating training of health workers at the local and state governments levels, to ensure that they are well-prepared to manage cases, without endangering themselves.

“There is rigorous temperature testing system established across the state in collaboration with medical and paramedical organisations. This is in recognition of the fact that the state is a major transportation hub with constant inflow of people. Temperature tests are conducted on passengers at the Benin Airport and motor parks across the state. The strategy is such that those whose final destination is Edo State and others commuting through the state are subjected to temperature tests.”

On the availability of testing centres to confirm suspected cases of the virus, he said, “We have a major advantage with the ISTH located in the state, which has a laboratory certified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) for testing for the coronavirus.

“Moreover, our preparations for the Edo 2020 National Sports Festival (NSF) gave the state a head start in preparation for management of public health emergencies, as necessary equipment and gadgets are in place to address any suspected case of the COVID-19.”

He noted, however, that citizens and residents should avoid large gatherings and that if it becomes necessary to shut down worship centres, the decision would be made in the interest of public safety.

“As part of the meetings with religious leaders in the state, we have partnered with relevant health agencies, including WHO, Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) and the State Ministry of Health, to train church workers on how to manage large crowds, conduct screenings and temperature tests, among other necessary measures. Teams would be sent to church premises and other worship places to ensure social distancing is observed,” he added.

He said that the State Executive Council (EXCO) has been broken into sub-committees to brainstorm and proffer short, medium and long term measures needed to strengthen the state’s response mechanism in the face of the adverse effect of COVID-19 outbreak on the socio-economic wellbeing of the state.

“To this end, an emergency EXCO session would be convened on Monday to harmonise the multi-sectorial response plan and present the necessary actions to Edo people.”

PoliticsCoronavirus: No Plans To Shut Down Schools, Places Of Worship In Edo- Gov Obasek by ThompsonJoo(op): 3:43pm On Mar 21, 2020
The Edo state government has said that there is no plan to shut down schools and places of worship in the wake of the Coronavirus pandemic.

Stare Governor Obaseki made this known when he received religious leaders from the state in his office on Friday March 20th.

He said there is no need for anyone in the state to panic as his government has taken appropriate measures to prevent the importation of the virus into the state. He however added that his government has put up measures to deal with the spread of the virus if it eventually finds its way to the state.

''There is no plan to shut down places of worship except it becomes absolutely necessary. However, we would want to appeal that for the sake of your congregation, we should look at how to keep people from being too close from one another. It is possible to place visual services'' he said

Many state governments have banned social gatherings as part of efforts to curb the spread of the virus in their states.

EducationCOVID-19;- WAEC Postpones Examination by ThompsonJoo(op): 6:21pm On Mar 20, 2020
response to growing health concern about the Coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19), The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Nigeria, which comprises of Nigeria, Ghana, Gambia, Liberia and Sierra Leone, has decided to put on hold the conduct of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for School Candidates, 2020, earlier scheduled to commence on April 6, 2020.

The examination body made the decision as a demonstration of the organisations concern and support for the various protocols being put in place by the Federal and State Governments of Nigeria and the governments of the other member countries to check the spread of the disease.

Patrick Ehidiamen Areghan, The Head of Nigeria National Office of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in a statement made available to BusinessDay says the move is as a result of the impact of the novel and deadly Corona Virus pandemic (COVID-19) and the serious implications it has for the conduct of the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2020, coupled with the anxieties it has generated among the populace.

Areghan disclosed that the earlier released Timetable for the conduct of the examination is hereby suspended until further notice.

According to Areghan, “We wish to assure all candidates, schools presenting candidates for the examination, all stakeholders, and indeed, the general public that this decision will be reviewed once the health situation improves. We enjoin all school principals presenting candidates for the examination to please inform their candidates accordingly”.

He however assured that a new date for the commencement of the examination will be communicated to schools and all stakeholders in due course.

It will be recalled that the council of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) had earlier in the week suspended its 68th Annual Council meeting scheduled for Monrovia, Liberia from March 23 to 27, 2020.

The council made the decision after its international A & F Committee, 176th special meeting in Accra where it was agreed that it would not augur well for large gatherings and close interactions which normally characterise the events of the Annual Council Meeting.

Pateh Bah, Registrar to council says as the scourge of the dreaded Corona Virus is rife globally at this period; the council had to take a difficult decision to suspend the 68th Annual Council Meeting until the global health situation improves.

Bah the registrar in charge of Gambia, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria and Sierra Leone however staff of member country to pay closer attention to the health and safety of all members of families.

He however called all necessary precautions to be taken based on informed advice from medical experts and promptly take advantage of the health facilities provided by the government in case of any emergency.

Bah in his goodwill message on the occasion of the 68th WAEC Day celebration pointed out that the Council met the expectations of its publics and satisfied the aspirations of stakeholders in education by executing its mandate creditably across the sub-region.

According to Bah, “We are conscious of the commitment and support received from Council, management has identified a number of latent potentials and mapped out in each case the appropriate strategy that can enhance the quality and scope of productivity in the critical operations of the Council”.

He assures that the Council’s repository of skilled and competent human resources will be exploited to generate more revenue through consultancy services.

He further opines that Funds will be sought through various means to erect befitting head office buildings and establish branch/zonal/regional offices, where necessary, to decentralise operations.
