Does your company have a CFO or a glorified accountant? CFOs are primarily in charge of financial strategy. In layman's words, they oversee ensuring that a company's inflows/revenues are maximised while its outflows/costs/expenses are minimised or at least that the business gets value for money on outflows. Ideally, they seek the best possible balance between growth and profitability. They examine risks, processes, and controls. They do a lot more. They certainly do a lot more than just accounting, payments, and financial reporting. It is not an easy job; it certainly means that CFOs cannot afford to be reactive. Otherwise, it will be too late to influence anything. They must be proactive and influential. The good thing about this is that when you are in accounting and finance, you don't need to have the CFO tag to be involved in strategy. Just develop a sincere interest in understanding the business, combined with understanding the financial information you have at your disposal, and you will be on your way. |

One of my staff came to me sometime back and asked if it would be OK to work remotely. I inquired to find out WHY. An employee came to me with a request after his first child was born: To work from home part-time so he could spend mornings with his wife and baby. I congratulated him and said “Take the week off.” My CEO was pissed when I told him: - “How dare you?” - “You should have consulted me first” - “You’re setting a dangerous precedent” I knew the culture wasn’t supportive. But my department was the most profitable, the employee in question always hit his goals, and most importantly… It was the *human* thing to do. The CEO wasn’t about to fire me. Which is why I stood my ground. But it only brought home the fact that the organization wasn’t right for me. Eventually, I left and founded TC. We gave the whole team a paid week off on the 4th of July and we’re doing the same after Christmas. Every year, no questions asked. Because paying people— Doesn’t give you the right to deny them the opportunity to celebrate life. P.S. When the employee got back, he told me that paternity leave was one of the best experiences of his life. |
