Family / Ultimate Parenting Guide To Handle Child Bullying by TigerFoods: 11:48am On Dec 11, 2021
Bullying is a growing problem in our society and its effect is more devastating, especially on our kids. Recently, there has been a rise in cases of bullying in schools, homes, workplaces, and social media (cyberbullying). Bullying can take different forms: physical, verbal and emotional. For kids, this can be as small as throwing something at another child or even yelling hurtful words at them. It’s important to understand the warning signs of bullying and how to handle them. Remember, bullies can be relatives, fellow students, neighbours or even teachers. Here are some tips to help you conquer your child's oppressors and build better mental health.

Build your child's confidence
Confidence is one of the greatest gifts a parent can give their child. When a child feels good about himself, a bully can't trample on his self-esteem. Encourage hobbies, extracurricular activities and social occasions to stimulate the child's best potential. Hype your child! Make them say their daily affirmations. Let them know that no one can have their unique potentials. Doing this goes a long way to boost their ego and keep oppressors far away.

Build a warm relationship
First, create a friendly relationship between you and your child. A warm atmosphere makes it easy for them to express themselves without fear. More so, in a case where your child doesn't want to talk about the bully or the incident. Be patient with them. Give them time to process what happened and allow them to speak when they are ready.

Get a school guide to keep tabs on your child
Get a trustworthy person to be your child's guardian in school, this has become necessary even in Primary schools as well. A guardian acts as a parent to your child in school. They inform you about your child/ward's school activities. They make sure your kids are on the best behaviour. They also protect your child from bullies. Bullies stay away from kids who are close to their guardians.

Encourage your Kids to be an upstander
One thing that you can do is to encourage your child to stand up to bullies. Being an upstander means a child can take positive actions against bullies. Enlighten them about their rights and responsibilities. By so doing, they can defend themselves and their friends from any intimidation. When this happens, it becomes difficult for tyrants to intimidate them.

Take Action
As we have earlier established, educators too can be bullies. The adults in our home are not left out either. This is the part that parents overlook. We must watch out for signs that the child’s immediate caregivers may be bullies and the reason the child is not performing optimally. As soon as you spot that, take action. Your actions and inactions are also keenly observed by the child. Since many bullies don’t change, it may be best to distance such perpetrators from the child.

Finally, parenting is a tasking job. Bearing in mind that children are born with inborn temperaments, help us create a preferred style of relating to them. Studies have also shown that parents often become less involved in the lives of their children as they enter the middle grades. Please know that your young adolescent needs as much attention and love from you as he needed when he was younger—and maybe more. Paying attention is the key.

Have you or your child experienced bullying before? How did you handle it? Share your experience in the comment section.

Food / Tricks To Save Your Cooking Gas. by TigerFoods: 7:41am On Nov 23, 2021
It is no news that the price of cooking gas has increased 4 times in the last 3 months, coupled with the cost of foodstuff thereby, making life unbearable for so many. Cooking gas has become a luxury commodity for an average Nigerian home. If you can still afford to fill yours to the brim, bravo ! It’s not every day you meet people who can comfortably fill up their gas cylinder with no hassle. Every home is desperately trying to adjust to this change while seeking ways to make the gas last longer. On a brighter note, we have come up with practical tips that will help reduce your frequent visit to the gas station.

Choose the correct Burner for your Cooking pots
Pots have different sizes, and cooking with each of them on the right burner minimises waste. The rule is, match a small cooking pot with a small burner and a big one to a big burner. Make sure the pot or pan is covering the flames completely. If you can see the flames licking the sides of the pan, it means the gas is turned up too high or the pot is too small for the burner. If your gas cooker has multiple burners of different sizes, choose a burner that’s smaller than the pot you’re using to ensure that it’s not putting off excess heat.

Know the difference between Heat and Flame
The flames emitted by your gas cooker should burn a bright blue colour. Yellow flames could be a sign of incomplete combustion, which means that the gas in the lines isn’t being used to its full potential. If cleaning the burners doesn’t solve the problem, call a repairman to come take a look at it and replace it if necessary. The key is to keep the flame low enough to keep the content burning and preserve the nutrient. Cook on Low to Medium heat.

Watch out for Leaks
Checking for any visible leaks is one of the best ways to prevent gas wastage in any way. Keep an eye on the pipe, regulator and burner for small leaks that can form over time and go unnoticed. This also goes to say that you may need to change to your cylinders to newer ones instead of repairing old leaky ones.

Keep the bottom pan completely dry
Almost everyone has made this mistake. When you want to cook, you usually rinse the pot before you start cooking. When this happens, there will be water droplets at the bottom of the pot. The water drips on the cooker and consumes more gas. It may seem negligible but hey, we’re trying to save gas here. To avoid this, wipe the bottom of your cooking pot with a kitchen towel after washing it and then put it on the burner.

Invest in Life-Made-Easy Appliances
Here is the last tip on the list. Invest in kitchen appliances like whistling kettles, pressure pots, etc. Boiling water is one of the things that consumes gas the most! It’s inevitable. Most recipes start with boiling water. To this effect, whistling kettles will give a loud indication of boiling water. The same goes for pressure pots which cooks your tough meals faster. They use 50-75% less energy on average than conventional cookware in the same cooking time. Beans and meat can testify to this .

Wrapping up, be mindful of your kitchen practices, gather all ingredients before cooking, cover pots when necessary, dish out food in food flasks to keep warm/hot, and avoid overcooking. That way, you will be saving both money and gas.

Which of these tips is new to you? Share at the comment section.

Food / Crispy Kokoro Recipe by TigerFoods: 8:28am On Oct 26, 2021
This yummy and exceptionally fresh tidbit is from the Western part of Nigeria. It is a famous delicacy made with cornflour, garri and a few ingredients. It is one of the simple Naija snacks that takes you through a ride of fond memories. In those days, we always anticipate eating this delicious corn stick during the school's break time. On most occasions, you join the queue waiting to buy Kokoro from the street hawker. The good news is you can prepare this snack at the solace of your home with your friends and family. It is a mouth-watery snack everyone anticipates each time someone decides to prepare it at home. Let make it happen right away.

Ingredients
Cornmeal/cornflour
Garri
Sugar
Tiger Chilli pepper
Tiger Ginger Powder
Pinch of salt
1 cup water
Oil for deep frying

Gather your ingredients

In a small bowl, add all the ingredients, mix thoroughly and set aside.

Pour half cup of water into a pot, leave to boil and then add the mixed cornmeal. Afterwards, stir until you get a stretchy mix that looks just like Eba.

Place the mixed cornmeal in a big bowl, cover and leave to cool completely.

When it is cooled, add the remaining cornmeal and knead until smooth.

Take a small quantity and roll it in between your palm. You can also roll it on a flat table to get a long shape. Thin sticks make crispier kokoro. Repeat this process for the remaining dough.

Heat your cooking oil in a pan, add the rolled sticks one at a time. Then fry until light or golden brown.

Afterwards, remove the hot Kokoro and place it on a paper towel to absorb excess oil.

Serve and enjoy with a chilled can of Tiger Ginger Health Drink.

grin grin
Mercychen:
I don't think that of beans is a myth because beans is protein and one of the functions of protein is growth.

As for drinking of garri, well... I can only say it dries the blood. ( Wouldn't know if this is another myth though).

That food that drops on the floor myth is not from parents. Children came up with that.
Food / Debunking Some Funny Food Myth You Once Believed by TigerFoods: 2:41pm On Sep 25, 2021
As a born and bred Nigerian, we believe in so many food myths. They are superstitious because there is no scientific proof to back these claims. It’s like old wives’ tales. Back then, Nigerian parents came up with funny tales to make you obey instructions and abstain from bad habits. These bad habits vary from standing to eat to picking and eating spilt foods. They know you will fall hook, line and sinker after hearing such funny tales, so they give it their best shot. Surprisingly, some parents just think they are myths, they actually believe in them and transfer them to their offspring just like it was passed unto them. Anyway, we are here to debunk this myth, and to encourage you to eat any meal that pleases your tastebud without having guilt.

Beans make you grow tall
Picky eaters in the house, this myth is for you. Back then, Beans were usually the least of meals to enjoy. Whether the meal is delicious or not, you always prefer to eat something else. The typical Naija parent came up with this myth to persuade you to eat the dish. They tell you that Beans make you grow tall, and when you don’t eat them, you become short. To avoid that, you gladly obey them. Again, this is untrue. Bean is a complex carbohydrate that provides energy to the body and does not make you grow tall. It does not single-handedly make you grow tall. Your height is dependent on your generational genes which are passed onto you.

Girls on their Menstrual Period shouldn’t enter the kitchen
In those days, if you have your monthly visitor, your parents will warn you sternly to stay off the kitchen else you contaminate the food. This may be cultural though. By every means, this is not true. There is no scientific backing to prove that your monthly flow can poison the meal you are cooking. This was probably passed on from ancestors from the past and some parents have refused to let go especially the titled chiefs.

Eating Meat/Fish before a meal is a Sign of Gluttony
Let’s admit it! There are days you want to eat fewer meals and more protein. Yet, Nigerian mums aren’t taking it with you. When they pass your meal, you are under the instruction to finish it before you eat the protein. You dare not touch them before eating your meal. This has earned many severe punishments. Some Naija mums intentionally remove the meat and wait until you finish eating before giving it to you. Sadly, as adults, many are yet to realise that it’s a myth. We keep passing it to the young generation.

Drinking Garri Myth
Nigerian parents will do anything to stop you from drinking Garri in a Nigerian home. They came up with this funny story that it’s bad for the eyes just to make you avoid the meal. Trust the instincts of a Naija child to snoop their way to find the hidden treasure. Another Garri myth is eating mango alongside. Huge myth debunked! Garri has been saving lives long before the Sapa season Eating mango while drinking Garri won’t and has never killed anyone. Nigerian parents made these up to stop you from eating weird food concoctions. But, why would someone eat mango while drinking Garri in the first place?

Standing to Eat Sends the Food to your Feet
Table manners 101 says, ‘‘Sit and Eat’’. Standing to eat is against the rules of etiquette. However, if you decide to break the rules, the food won’t go to your feet. Actually, eating while standing up allows people to continue to eat and drink because they're able to digest faster and are more prone to overeating. This will make you become hungrier faster or feeling bloated and gassy. However, there's little evidence to support the notion that eating while standing up is harmful. In fact, eating while standing up may be beneficial for reducing reflux and heartburn in adults. This myth is just passed from generation to generation to enforce good table etiquette.

Any Food that Falls to the Ground belongs to the Devil
This myth is really laughable. It’s unhygienic to pick and eat food from the ground. The food has contaminated germs, and it’s unhealthy to eat them. The only way to make your children stop this habit was to come up with tales to scare you. Interestingly, it worked. Kids even encourage their friends not to do so.

On a final note, Nigerian parents are the absolute best. They will go the extra mile to make sure you are safe and healthy. Gist us, are there any other food myths you once believed? Share at the comment section.

Food / Knife Technique 101; Tips To Master The Art by TigerFoods: 9:10am On Sep 08, 2021
Kitchen confidence opens a world of possibilities. It makes you explore new recipes, master skills that come in handy in and out of the kitchen. First of all, never let the intimidation of a TV professional chef get to you. You can become a pro in knife skills; all it takes is the determination to learn and master the process. Knowing how to cut meat, vegetables and fruits give a beautiful food presentation. Are you a regular home cook looking to learn the basic skills in the world of knife mastery? Join us on a jolly ride as we walk you through them.

Choose the Right Knife
Knives are the backbone of any home cook; they come in a variety. Each one of them has a different purpose, discover their function, and you will never have to worry about the speed at which professional chefs cut vegetables and fruits.

Give no room for Blunt Knife
The first thing you need to do before cooking a meal is to sharpen your knife. A blunt knife makes your vegetables, fruits, meat look shabby. Not just that, it slows the cooking process and makes you apply pressure when using it. Having said that, if you are worried about getting cuts from a sharp knife, wear cut-proof gloves.

Get a Grip on your knife
Be in control of your knife when you chop. Wrap your hands around where the blade and handle meet. These make it easy and safe for you to chop. Also, never hold your knife at the back of the handle. It won’t give you leverage over the blade.

Know the basic cuts
By mastering a few simple motions, you’ll be able to cut items into pieces faster and more effectively. Keep in mind that if a recipe calls for chopping, you should try to keep those pieces to a roughly equal size. Dicing means you should aim for quarter-inch cubes, while mincing means you should chop them as small as possible.

Create a Stable Surface
Sometimes, chopping boards don’t have a good grip on countertops while cutting your vegetables. To make it stay firm, fold a damp kitchen towel and put it under the chopping board. Now you can chop without the board slipping off your countertop.

Practice Leads to Perfection
The world best chef started as a regular cook. No one was born with the craft. They all practised their way to the top. Consistent practice helps you master the skill.

Finally, kitchen skills are not hard to perfect. Learn the process, and you will become a Pro in it. What other skills do you wish to learn?

Thank you Candy for your input.
CandyOps:
Nice write-up but u missed some vitals.

The grip or handle of the knife matters a lot in & out of the kitchen. The handle should have a comfy shape that has space for a full grip... pay attention to grip, especially the position of your pointing finger when you wrap your hand on the knife handle.

If your pointing finger wraps around the steel base of the knife instead of the handle then it probably doesn't have a great handle design.

Also, pay attention to the design of the blade itself. If it has many little rigdes in it, it could be a bread knife. If it has a flat sharp end, then it's prolly for chopping meats... And an outward curve in the middle is perfect for veggies

Romance / Interesting Ways Nigerians Handle Heartbreak. by TigerFoods: 3:47pm On Aug 28, 2021
Heartbreak can be a traumatizing moment. It leaves you in pain, regret, and a wallow in self-pity. While the fear of being without a partner has made some people stick to unhealthy relationships, the brave ones leave and never look back. Ironically, these categories of people are sober and think of ways to get over the pain of a broken heart in the shortest possible time. In an attempt to overcome it as fast as possible, they cry so much, eat so much, drink to stupor, and some even get into a new relationship. The yummy part of this gist is that when they eventually go through the phases of heartbreak, their comeback becomes lit. This brings us to the main discourse; The different ways Nigerians get over a heartbreak. Let's look at them one at a time.

Pretend your way out
This league of people pretends that they are not hurt. In fact, they move on as quickly as the relationship ends. They have no time for ''sorry stories'' from friends of both parties. They are not interested in the conversation that talks about their partner. Their way of overcoming heartbreak is to put up the perfect act of a relaxed, happy, and unbothered person. They sometimes cry more at night when no one is looking and put up the usual attitude in the morning.

Emotional Eaters
Because breakups can be stressful and emotional, it could potentially trigger emotional eating. The hard part of emotional eating is that in trying to pull through big heartbreaks, they break their own hearts every day. They eat more than their bodies want and binge on unhealthy foods that oftentimes make them sick.

The Block Industry ‘Geng’
We bet you didn't see that coming If this is your style of handling heartbreak, gather here for attendance It's alright to block your ex from reaching you on both phone and social media as long as it makes you feel better. Although you may have the temptation to check what they have been up to of late. When it happens, be sure to be in control of the situation.

The Motivational Speakers
You never can tell what lies within you until heartbreak strikes These people turn their social media status into a hub of motivation quotes. These actions send a signal to their partner, some of them who understands the memo are quick to shade you or try to reconcile with you. Either way, your actions make you have a self-reflection.

R N B/ Comedy to the rescue
The emotional ones are on this table. Music and comedy make them happy and hopeful. Any time they listen to their playlist or watch some funny skit, they forget every heartbreak and focus on the brighter side of life.

Hearts are made to be resilient. Think about it: Is there a thing that's happened to you that you haven't survived despite all the heartache you've had in your life? Something in you is still awake, alive, eager to learn, ready to be moved.

Which team(s) do you belong to? Did we miss other ways Nigerians handle heartbreak? Share in the comment section.

Family / How To Deal With A Workaholic Partner by TigerFoods: 12:04pm On Aug 14, 2021
It can be overwhelming coping with a partner who loves their job way too much. Nothing else matters to them except ticking off their worklist. It's frustrating getting excuses from them whenever you want to spend time with them. More so, you can't have a conversation without them bringing up office politics. Although once in a while, you can bring back workload from the office, but don’t let it become a norm in your home. When that happens, your partner can help with the kids and house chores while you finish up your work. Anyway, these strategies will help you whenever your partner becomes obsessed with work. Let's walk you through them.

Communication is Key

Every relationship needs communication to make headway. The moment you observe your partner barely spends time with you, have a chit-chat with them. Sometimes, they are oblivious of the time spent on work. Calling their attention to it is the right way to start. Also, if the office workload is so much, offer to help in any way you can. Doing that makes you bond together while getting the job done.

Expect the Workload

Expecting a situation to occur beforehand prepares you to manage the event when it comes. Acknowledge there are days your partner will have so much work to do and may find it hard to balance life and work. When this happens, be a supportive partner to them. Also, if your partner is a habitual workaholic, don't expect them to change, rather accept your fate and live life with no pressure.

Keep yourself Distracted

When it's obvious you can't do anything to make them come around, the best thing to do is, distract yourself with e-books, social media, Netflix. You can even use the time to discover who you are and embrace your identity. If you have kids, you can involve yourself in their activities.

Pull the Fun trigger.

Sometimes workaholics need to do something other than office work; they may be looking for something to calm their nerves. While doing so, they hope you get the memo to pull the fun trigger. To do that, set up a romantic date for two or a visit to the beach. Another trick that works is reassurance from a loved one. Make your partner realise that taking breaks help them do their job better.

Surprises Do the Trick

Have you ever received a food tray with a handwritten note or a credit alert in the middle of so much workload? The feeling is heart-warming and uplifting. Surprises have a way of making you forget your worries and focus on the beautiful things of life.

Do you find these strategies helpful? Let us know in the comment section.

Health / Unhygenic Cooking Habits To Stop Now ! by TigerFoods: 12:39pm On Jul 31, 2021
When it comes to cooking habits, some are hard to break. Many chefs/home cooks have habit that they didn’t think were doing any damage but have actually been ruining the quality and taste of their food. Sometimes you don't even realise these actions affect your dish and health. Some may be keeping your meal just short of reaching perfection while others may actually be hazardous to your health. These cooking habits are mostly down to impatience and laziness and should be avoided.
Well, if you've picked up any of these bad cooking habits, it's seriously time to say goodbye to them and up your kitchen game the right way.

Using one cooking spoon to scoop different dishes
For some of us, dishwashing is a difficult chore. Even so, using one cooking utensil to scoop different dishes is a big no. This habit can give you scour food stories. To avoid stories that touch, simply use a different cooking spoon for each dish.

Overloading the frying pan
We know you can't wait to cook and leave the kitchen. Even so, be patient, allow your protein to fry and give you a crispy result. Never give in to the temptation of filling your saucepan to the brim. Doing that can actually cause slow cooking and soak the food with oil. Taking time to cook in batches will make your meal taste much better.

Over stirring the food
One of the kitchen rules says consistent stirring prevents burnt food. But, stirring too much isn't a good cooking habit to adopt. Every time you stir or flip food, you extend your cooking time and alter the food texture and colour. Also, it breaks food apart and makes your meal mushy. An occasional stir prevents sticking and ensures all sides are cooked. Resist the urge of frequent stirring; unless the recipe tells you to do so.

Using barehand to remove a hot pot of food
You are not James Bond. You may have been taught that if you can’t use your bare hands to remove a hot pot of food from the fire, then you are not ready to accept the role of a chef Don’t hurt yourself trying to prove you are a brave chef. Kitchen towels and gloves are here for a reason, use them.

Using the same oil to fry different things
For real, who does that? Imagine frying Egg or Plantain with the same oil used to fry Fish . We use oil in so many different ways to enhance flavour or make the dish look yummy and glossy. Many households reuse the same oil over and over again to minimise waste. It is okay to reuse oil as long as you can refresh with Ginger. However, it is unhealthy to reuse oil when it has become dark, greasier and thicker. That dark oil can create free radicals that can lead to inflammation and thus diseases. It’s best we throw it away.

Refreshing Sour Food
When trying to display our management skills to prevent waste, we overlook certain things and try to make the dish better by refreshing it. Some people even try to use charcoal to revive a sour meal . The moment you notice a change in taste or colour of your food. It's a sign the meal is no longer healthy for consumption, hence the need to throw them away. Your health is a priority; you live to make another dish.

Not Cleaning as you cook
Nobody wants to eat from a dirty and unorganised kitchen. Never wait until when you finish cooking before tidying up the place. Clean as you cook, houseflies thrive in a dirty environment. Never give room for that to happen. Keep your kitchen clean while cooking and after cooking.

Rinsing your mortar and pouring the content in a cooking pot
If you are guilty of this habit, do like this Nigerian Mothers hate waste. They are thorough with scraping Pepper and Crayfish from a mortar. Interestingly, they will rinse the mortar with water and pour the content right inside the cooking pot. Do you know germs could be lingering around your mortar? These germs can hop inside your food while pouring the content into the cooking pot.

There are many others that include: licking the cooking spoon, defrosting your meat on the kitchen counter, partly reading the recipe, not preheating the oven, using dull knives etc. Did we miss any habits on the list? Tell us.

Your feedback warms our hearts. Keep feeding us with them.

Romance / Different Flavours Of Nigerian Landlords. by TigerFoods: 3:01pm On Jul 16, 2021
Being a landlord despite the economic situation in Nigeria is no small feat. They deserve an accolade. However, many Nigerians think that Landlords are the hardest people to deal with. We don’t think so. Every landlord has their good, bad and ugly side, and some make things easy for their tenants. Nigerian tenants castigate landlords a lot like we all do not aspire to be one someday. We must be fair and put ourselves in their shoes. Both tenants and landlords have the responsibility to work towards achieving a safe and secured environment. Interestingly, we can’t get over the fascinating nature of our Nigerian landlords. This brings us to the main gist about the different flavours of a landlord. Let’s dive in

The Bossy Landlord
They always intimidate their tenants. When you complain, he will remind you who owns the house and asks you to leave if you are not comfortable with their management style. You can't have an opinion without getting a backlash from him. They have a timetable for everything; when to lock/open the gate, when to fetch water, who to let or not to let into the apartment etc. They are quick to eject you from the flat to get a new tenant. Woe betides anyone who owes them rent, they simply leave you at the mercy of their lawyers.

The Greedy Landlord
These ones are never satisfied with the rent and other payments; they are not interested in the plight of their tenant. Money is the only thing that matters to them. They keep increasing the rent, security fees, and other utility fees every chance he gets. They are quick to remind you to pay your debt. This set can embarrass you at any time. Some start to remind you 4 to 5 months before your rent is due. This set belongs to those that will increase your rent as soon as you buy a new car .

The Nosy Landlord
They are the gossip mongers in the compound. They want to know every little detail of what happens in your apartment. They barge into your house at the slightest noise. Sometimes you begin to wonder if you share your apartment with them. These are the ones that give unsolicited advice and ask questions like, “Is that your daughter’s makeup not too much?”, “Is that your boyfriend?”, “Why don’t you like beating your children?”, “Was it Tiger Curry you used to make that stew I perceived on Sunday?” etc…lol

The Generous and Friendly Landlord
These categories of landlords are angels on earth. They are friendly with their tenants. They always have your interests at heart. Their attitude towards you can make you form a bond with them. Even after you leave the compound, you still keep in touch with them. Some even turn out to become your business partner. Or even family. They are the ones that invite you over for dinner. They always make sure their tenants are very comfortable in the compound. Indeed, their reward is in heaven.

The Lazy Landlord
These types of landlords never take responsibility for any damage to their property. They turn deaf ears each time you call them for maintenance. They are usually unavailable and soft-spoken. They are quick to encourage the tenant to manage the poor state of the apartment. They even ask the tenants to fix the flat since they are the occupants of it. These landlords only do minor renovation when there is a new incoming tenant while shielding other damages as much as they can.

The Endless Meeting Landlord
These ones call for meetings without prior notice. No phone calls, texts, or even a verbal message. They will knock on your door at any time of the day and expect you to be present at the meeting ground. Any time is perfect to have a meeting; when you complain or fail to attend, all hell is let loose on you. They are the ones that lock the gate on Saturday morning till the meeting is held irrespective of tenants that need to be at work. They are majorly the reason why people don’t like living in an apartment where the Landlord reside.

The list is endless. As a Nigerian, you are either a landlord or tenant. Either of it, I believe you can relate to one or two of these flavours of Landlords. So, tell us, do you prefer live-in Landlords and does your landlord fit into any of the categories?

Food / Different Flavours Of Nigerian Landlords by TigerFoods: 4:38pm On Jul 15, 2021
