This sweet nectar from nature is apparently the most popular local drink in Nigeria. Palm wine is a local alcoholic drink that has a sweet taste when freshly tapped and is enjoyed by most Nigerians that love it sweet or sour. What’s more? Fish and meat dishes complement it so well. Romance / Reasons To Make You Fall Hopelessly In Love With Honey. by TigerFoods: 11:16am On Aug 03, 2020
Obsessed with honey as we are? Well, you’ve been missing out a great deal if your answer is no. Honey contains a wide range of nutritional and medicinal value, and it does not expire. They say, “Honey stored in sealed containers can remain stable for decades and even centuries!” That’s right! The reason for the magical longevity of honey lies in its biological makeup. Because of the sugar content and low pH of honey, as well as the bees’ honey-making process, organisms that can spoil food won’t survive in honey. But honey has to be natural and sealed properly to enjoy its long lifespan. You already know that we are advocates for a healthy lifestyle, so it excites us that there are way too many reasons to love Honey. If you haven’t been exploring the wonders of honey, we suggest you do so after getting to know of its goodness. Let’s gist.

Honey relieves cough
Our moms were right, after all, honey is a natural relief for sore throats, coughs, and other throat infections. It is almost as effective as most over-the-counter drugs; the natural sweetener not only soothes throats but also kills certain bacteria that cause infection. We know how worrisome it can be when our kids and loved ones cough consistently and deprive us of that beauty sleep we so much desire after a stressful day. Don’t worry we are here to make that worry go away; Add 2 teaspoons of honey to a warm glass of milk or water before bedtime to safely relieve your child of cough, that way you can get back that beauty sleep you deserve.

Moisturizes the Skin
Honey is your skin’s best friend because it’s a natural humectant, which means it attracts and retains moisture. Its properties make it ideal as a do-it-yourself ingredient for skincare routine thereby helping you save money. To stay moisturized, mix honey, milk, and avocado into a small bowl until a smooth paste is formed, then use a clean foundation brush to apply on dry skin and leave it to sit for 10 minutes. Rinse with warm water. For best results, apply twice.

Extends Shelf Life
One of the reasons we love homemade cakes, cookies and bread is because of the moist, sweet and fresh taste it gives especially when they are freshly baked. It can be worrisome when freshly baked food turns bad after a day or two. That’s really worrisome if you ask us. Nevertheless, we can’t deny the delicious flavour and perfect touch of honey in our favourite pastries. Did you know that honey’s antimicrobial properties can help extend the shelf life of cookies, bread and cakes? Guess not! According to research, honey has a high acid content that inhibits mould growth in baked foods hence making them to last longer.

Natural sweetener
When you brew a cup of hot tea or coffee, do you reach for honey or sugar? If you have been using sugar it’s time to reconsider having a healthier option like Honey. Its journey is as natural as it gets, it adds the perfect amount of sweetness to any beverage, it also imparts unique flavour while balancing and enhancing other ingredients, making it an ideal ingredient for everything from your most complex cocktails to simple drinks, such as tea/coffee.

Erases dark circle
Our eyes are the window to our soul, sadly the appearance of dark circles make us look tired and worried! Honey has antioxidants and essential nutrients that help to protect the skin and get rid of those ugly dark circles. Have you ever wondered how to get rid of dark circles under the eye? Well, it might interest you to know that honey improves blood circulation which in turn, helps to lighten the dark circles under the eye. Simply apply honey to a clean face, allow it to sit for 15 minutes, and rinse.

Treats Wounds and Burns
This is an interesting fact, who would have thought that honey helps to heal wounds? Honey is made up of mostly glucose and fructose that absorb water if applied on wounds. It helps promote healing, making it a natural first-aid cure for wounds, burns, and cuts. Honey’s antiseptic properties inhibit the growth of certain bacteria and help keep external wounds free from infection. It helps reduce swelling, pain, and even scarring as it works as an anti-inflammatory as well.

Besides helping with your health, honey can be used for skin and hair care. It’s great as an overnight lip mask, hair conditioner, or even to combat itchy skin from dry air or mosquito bites.

We bet you are already feeling an inclination towards this golden, sweet treat. The list of what you can do with it is just endless. You can add what makes you obsessed with Honey in the comment section. We can’t wait to hear from you. That being said, the holiday is a long one, while making merry explore the goodness of Honey.

A joyful Eid-El-Kabir to you all.

Romance / The Smartest Ways To Transform Boring Food. by TigerFoods: 1:30pm On Jul 25, 2020
Food is like music. Hearing the same songs over and over again gets boring to a point where you don’t want to listen to it anymore. We can totally relate to coming back home from work and eating the same food, that’s completely boring if you ask us. Our meals should be appetizing and help us save money since it’s prepared at home. So today we decided to encourage you to throw caution to the wind and discover new ways to get better at planning, creating, and cooking meals you love in the kitchen. We can assure you that these tips end your worry of food boredom.

Spice your butter.
The saying “when in doubt add spice” is just perfect when using butter to cook. Bearing in mind that moderation is key, adding spices such as thyme, garlic, and ginger adds instant flavour to the butter that you would ordinarily not get in plain butter. To season butter, slowly heat it in a saucepan, add desired spices and stir until there is no more foam. Then, remove it from the heat and let the spices settle down. Afterward, strain through a fine-mesh sieve and store the butter in a refrigerator. There is no doubt you’ll love the result. With spiced butter, your sandwich, toasts, stew, and Naija jollof rice will thank you.

Add salt to your beverage
When you add salt to your coffee, it neutralizes the bitterness by blocking the taste buds responsible for it. A pinch of salt helps to enhance the flavour. It will also add thickness to the beverage by making the water denser. While salt intensifies the taste of your choice of beverage, it also brings out subtle flavours you hadn’t even noticed in past cups of coffee/tea. Your red wine is not left out as well. Adding a pinch of salt to your red wine smoothens and balances its flavour. Oh, and change your life. If chefs add salt to their food to change and enhance the flavours, this same basic logic works for wine.

Add butter as the last ingredient
Preparing wholesome meals doesn’t mean removing fats entirely. Nevertheless, if you undoubtedly want to get the best flavour, add butter as the last ingredient. This trick adds a more distinct flavour to the meal. For instance, a tablespoon of butter or oil added at the end of cooking adds more flavour than 4 or 5 tablespoons added at the beginning. When you add butter at the end, it rests on the surface of the food instead of melding or combining with your ingredients. This explains why we recommend adding butter when our Jollof Rice is almost ready; the flavour it leaves in the dish is heavenly!

Use natural sweetener
Although we love sweet foods a lot, there are many effective ways to sweeten your snacks and meals while keeping them hearty and nutritious. Natural sweeteners are typically less refined than table sugar and generally have more vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. Consider sweetening your meals by adding Apples, Banana, Berries, Dates, Natural honey or Sugarcane juice to your breakfast cereals, plain yoghurt, snacks and salad.

Cook with Wine
The first and most important rule before cooking with wine; Use only wines you enjoy drinking, to cook. Never use any wine that you would not drink! If you do not like the taste of a wine, you will not like the dish either. The function of wine in cooking is to intensify, enhance, and accent the flavour and aroma of food. For best results, wine should be added when the meal is still at the cooking process. As the wine cooks, it reduces and makes the food taste better. Red wines are perfect for making Beef Stew and Meatballs.

Are you are used to consuming meal a certain way or eat out a lot? We know it can be a challenge to make luscious and tasty meals. However, these tips and a little creativity make it fun to have a meal plan and sustain a healthy lifestyle.

With the seemingly countless benefits of turmeric, here are some great uses of the ‘Magic Spice’ for flawless skin and luscious hair.

Turmeric for Haircare

Turmeric for treating dandruff
Dandruff is the commonest hair problem that both men and women experience; it can cause hair loss if not properly treated. Dandruff often comes with flakes (an unpleasant feeling of itching). Turmeric contains various anti-bacterial traits, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory that helps to clean the scalp, and then reduces dandruff. While at it, it also helps to increase the blood circulation under the skin, preventing the dead skin cells from forming. To treat dandruff, mix turmeric with olive oil, and apply it to your scalp. Allow it to stay for 20 to 30 minutes and rinse out well with a lightweight shampoo.

Treats hair loss
The possible reasons for hair loss vary from poor diet, mental problems, stress, or a hormonal disorder. Curcumin is a key ingredient in turmeric that helps hair loss and promotes hair growth. Nevertheless, you can stimulate hair growth and also prevent hair fall by including turmeric in your diet and hair care regimen. Take 4-5 tablespoons of turmeric powder and mix it well in a bowl of raw milk to make a semi-liquid solution. You may also add some honey to this solution to act as a conditioner, massage gently, and cover your scalp with a shower cap. Then let it sit for half an hour and wash it off with your regular shampoo. Repeat twice a week for an effective result.

Turmeric can tint the Hair.
This incredible spice has a strong tint; you can use it to dye your hair. To tint your hair naturally, mix turmeric with henna and curd every week for at least 4 months to see a noticeable change in the hair colour. This mask is completely natural and your hair won’t be damaged during this process. To get a more reddish colour, mix a few teaspoons of natural henna to this solution, apply it on your hair, and allow it to sit for about 4 to 5 hours. Go ahead to do your daily chores while waiting for it to dry and stop dripping. Wash it off with cold water and shampoo. Don’t fail to treat your hair with conditioner after washing.

Turmeric for Skin Care

Reduce Skin Pigmentation.
UV rays are our skin’s ‘worst enemy’; they cause sunburns, skin cancer, fine lines, hyper pigmentation, and wrinkles. Regardless, Turmeric may help you turn back the clock, in no time. To reduce skin pigmentation, apply a mixture of turmeric powder and lemon or cucumber juice on the affected area for 20-30 minutes and wash off with plain water. This should be done regularly for beneficial results.

Soothe Burns.
When you get injured, your body’s natural response sends white blood cells and healing enzymes to the wound to stave off infection — this is what causes inflammation. While that sounds like a good thing, it also causes the not-so-beneficial effects of heat, redness, and pain. Turmeric can provide quick relief in a mild case of burns, thanks to its antiseptic properties. You can apply a mixture of turmeric and aloe vera gel on burns and the injury will heal in no time. Also, it speeds up the skin’s ability to form new and healthy tissue. It boosts collagen production too, meaning your injury heals faster and fewer scars.

Treat Cracked Heels
Turmeric is naturally an excellent therapeutic agent. To heal cracked heels, you can apply a mixture of three spoons of Turmeric with a few drops of coconut or castor oil on your heels for 10 to 15 minutes before taking a bath. Doing this regularly will soften your heels. Wear good shoes and don’t walk barefoot even at home till they are completely treated.

We can’t deny the wonderful benefits of turmeric to achieve glossy hair and flawless skin. However, please know that if you desire to take turmeric dosage or any supplements alongside with it, consult your doctor first. We sincerely hope that you learned an innovative way to promote hair growth, treat scalp-related problems as well as look beautiful and flawless with Turmeric.

Romance / JUST IN: What Makes Liquor Different From Liqueur? by TigerFoods: 1:02pm On Jul 13, 2020
In the world of creative cocktails and spirits, there are many types of alcohol out there and so many different terms that get thrown around. If you are like us and love beverages and cocktails, then you need to comprehend what some of these terms signify. Liquor and liqueur are some of those beverage terms that get cocktail lovers confused, they sound and spell similar, yet different in meaning. Although both are distilled spirits that contain alcohol and are crucial ingredients when mixing cocktails, the liquids are not the same and the terms are not similar. Guess what? Buddies we are more than happy to properly explain these two terms; highlight their similarities and differences, thereby making it easier to create your cocktails with confidence. Let’s start with Liquor, the more common of the two terms.

Liquor
Liquor is simply described as any distilled beverage (alcoholic) made of plants or grains and concocted into a potent drink. Simply put, staples like Gin, Vodka, Rum, and Tequila are all forms of liquor. Often referred to as a base of cocktails and mixed drinks, it can be enjoyed on the rocks and neat. It is also referred to as “hard alcohol’’ and they remain the oldest forms of alcohol in the world. Moreover, Liquor has an alcohol content of 20% to 40%. Another defining characteristic of liquor is, it is “unsweet”, though sugar is used to ferment the liquor. Even when flavoured, the taste is unpleasant.

Liquors are made through distillation. To begin with, an alcoholic liquid will be made by fermentation – similar to how wine is produced, then this liquid will be put into a “still” where the alcohol will be extracted in relatively high concentration. The result becomes a “distilled spirit” that can be aged respectively. The most significant thing to know about liquors when using them in cocktails is that they make your drink taste “hot” or alcoholic.

Liqueur?
A liqueur is sweet by nature; in fact, this term is used to describe these sweetened spirits that are made with unique flavours and extracts. Liquor, like rum, brandy and whiskey can all be used as a base spirit for a liqueur, which is confusing for some of us. Typically, liqueurs have an alcohol content of around 15% but can be as high as 55%. There are so many different flavours of liqueurs as well ranging from sweet and creamy, to citrus-flavoured and everything in between. One of the most popular liqueurs is Gloria Crème Liqueur, which is cream-coffee flavoured and used in many cocktails. Liqueurs are a fairly common ingredient in cocktails, because of their ability to bring an extraordinary depth of flavour and complexity to a cocktail.

Many liqueurs can frequently be drunk on their own without mixers or complicated cocktail recipes as they are so sweet and smooth. Another characteristic of liqueurs is their consistency – they are thicker and more viscous than liquors. That justly said, liqueurs always bring sweetness. As we mentioned earlier, if they didn’t bring sweetness, they wouldn’t be liqueurs! Therefore, if you’re including liqueur to an existing cocktail recipe, be sure to adjust other sweeteners, the result gives your classic cocktail a unique taste.

Buddies, we have cleared the confusion. You now know the difference between liquor and liqueur. Go ahead and call yourself an expert on this topic and start creating unique cocktails at home.

Romance / Suya (yaji) Recipe. by TigerFoods: 5:38pm On Jul 03, 2020
Many people enjoy Suya, but only a few barely bother about the accompanying spice, Yaji. Suya spice, locally known as ‘Yaji’ is what defines the overall taste and flavour of the snack. The recipe for the spice has always been a closely guarded secret by the ‘Mallams’ who specialise in making it, but here we are now leaking this top secret….lol. The spice mix was originally made by northern Nigerian herdsmen which have ultimately found its way across West-Africa and beyond. Each spice used in the mixture is typically also used all across Nigeria and West-African in local dishes. They are jammed with aromatic flavours that make a perfect seasoning rub for beef, pork, fish, and chicken. Talk about an all-purpose taste of West-Africa.

A simple pack of roasted peanuts and additional Spices and Seasoning are all it takes to replicate that awesome all-in-one seasoning in your kitchen. Read on to find out just how.

Ingredients
1 cup of roasted Peanuts
1 teaspoon of Tiger Chilli pepper
¼ teaspoon of blended Vegeta Onion (dehydrated onion)
1 teaspoon Tiger Ginger Powder
1 teaspoon Tiger Garlic Powder
1 Larsor Chicken Seasoning (10g)
A pinch each of ground cloves
Salt to taste

Direction
The first appropriate step in making Suya spice is to crush the peanuts. The result should look like a fine crumble. Be careful not to overdo this so as not to end up with a wet spice rather than a dry one. The tools you will need for this step are pestle and mortar. You may use a handheld chopper or food processor, as you so wish.

Gently heat a dry pan over medium heat and pour in the combined mixture of crushed roasted Peanut, ground Cloves and blended Onion with Tiger Ginger Powder, Tiger Garlic Powder, Tiger Chilli Powder, Larsor Chicken Seasoning and salt.

Using a wooden spoon, toss the spice mixture around the pan until you can smell a vibrant aroma.

Turn the heat off, set the pan aside and allow it cool.

Store the mixture in a jar. You can use it immediately or store in a cool & dry area. Interestingly, this mix can be used as an all-purpose Seasoning such as in Stew, Sauces, Rice and Meat dishes.

We can’t wait for you to make this weekend’s Sunday stew or proper Naija Jollof Rice with Yaji. You can come back and thank us later….wink. We will be right here waiting for your feedback on this delectable and aromatic spice.

When it comes to enriching the body with the needed nutrients, Tiger nut is a miracle worker. You can enjoy tiger nuts in a variety of ways, and they still adorn you with numerous health and beauty benefits hence, the reason you should include them in your diet. It is no longer news that Tiger nuts have a history of being used to boost libido acting as an aphrodisiac. They are rich in a variety of nutrients and have been linked to several health benefits — ranging from better digestion, reduced blood sugar, immune system boost, to a reduced risk of heart disease. Germinating or roasting tiger nut prior to eating reduces their antinutrient levels, making it easier for your body to absorb and use the many nutrients they contain.

Tiger nut can be consumed fresh, or used in cooking, and baking. So you can see Tiger Nut is incredibly versatile and can become a part of a broad range of foods you can prepare at home with ease. Just take a look at the following ideas to incorporate tiger nuts as part of your everyday diet. There are plenty of ways to enjoy them! Over here are some of our favourites.

Munch them whole.
Tiger nuts are delicious and wholesome; therefore, consuming a handful of them during snack time can help you prevent indulging in a heavy snacking. To enjoy it better, infuse them in water and leave it for some minutes to soften before eating it. If you need a nutritious snack, you can invariably turn to tiger nuts.

Tiger Nut Milk
One of the first tiger nut recipes you’ll want to try is making simple dairy-free milk. All you need is a high-powered blender and cheesecloth. Try soaking your tiger nuts overnight and then blending them in a ratio of two cups of water to one cup of tiger nuts. Using cheesecloth, separate the milk from the pulp. Once that is achieved, you can happily enjoy the goodness of Tiger Nut Milk.

Incorporate Them into Your Breakfast Cereal.
A hearty breakfast can give you energy for hours and supply your body with protein, fibre, minerals and vitamins. A convenient way to introduce tiger nut milk into your diet is through breakfast cereal or oatmeal, it adds a subtle sweetness to dishes, and the milk is a perfect drink to have early in the morning. Tiger nuts are extremely nourishing and will provide plenty of energy to help you start the day. You will appreciate the taste and enjoy the feeling of an ample stomach for a longer period.

Tiger Nut Flour for Baking
You can use tiger nuts flour for making Cookies, Pancakes, Bread and other homemade goodies. In baking, it behaves pretty much like almond flour, producing a nice degree of moisture. Moreover, since tiger nut flour is naturally slightly sweet, there may be no need to include sugar to the recipes. You can dry and further grind the leftover tiger nut pulp from making milk to get the flour. Substitute tiger nut flour at a 1:1 ratio for replacing conventional flour in recipes. Tiger nut flour is an excellent option for gluten-free bakers.

Tiger Nut Ice Cream
Who doesn’t love ice-cream? With tiger nuts, you can prepare healthy ice-cream for your family at home. You apparently know that ice-cream that lacks milk fat is not that creamy. Since tiger nut milk is generous when it comes to healthy fats content, its creamy nature is an excellent base for nourishing ice cream.

Tiger Nut Oil
Tiger Nut Oil is a healthier option for cooking. This Oil is great when used in salads, and Pasta. Since it has a high smoke point, it can also be used for cooking other types of food. Tiger nut oil is cold-pressed, which makes it similar to extra-virgin Olive Oil.

Tiger Nut Smoothies
We recommend adding Tiger Nut to your smoothies, especially for those of that need a lot of energy and appreciate the aphrodisiac nature of Tiger nut…wink. Simply blend Banana, Date, Coconut, Tiger Nut milk and add Tiger Ginger Powder to give it that unique taste. Then sit back and drink to health….yum!

Romance / How To Achieve A Flawless Skin From Your Kitchen (the Spicy Way). by TigerFoods: 11:44am On Jun 27, 2020
Skincare doesn’t have to be complicated to be effective. We believe in good quality natural products that work for your skin type, as well as consistency and availability. So, let’s talk spice and skincare. Spices go beyond adding flavour to your food. Some have medicinal properties that naturally heal and rejuvenate the skin. We all want glowing skin, and a lot of people invest a lot of money in skincare products to get young and vibrant skin. If you also have spent a lot of money on beauty products but didn’t get the desired result, head to your kitchen right away, the solution to that dull, lacklustre skin lies in your spice rack. You’d be wowed at how these spices can make your skin flawless. So let’s gist….

Cinnamon

Cinnamon is one of the favourite spice sweet lovers; moderate amounts of spice can also be a unique and wonderful means to care for your skin. The antioxidants, phosphorus, magnesium, iron and other micro and macro elements that are present in Cinnamon, have cleansing and nourishing properties. It also tones up the skin and improves blood circulation, which helps to activate the power of skin cell. The spice is also rich in Vitamins. Vitamin E contained in Cinnamon promotes the renewal of the skin cells, vitamin C can give skin smoothness and elasticity, and vitamin K is responsible for the beautiful colour of the face, as well as improves the performance of the blood vessels, which ultimately affects the overall condition of the skin. To achieve that flawless skin, all you have to do is to mix 1 tablespoon of Cinnamon powder with 2-3 teaspoon of honey to form a paste. Apply this mix on the face, covering acne and pimples. Wash it off with lukewarm water after 10 minutes. Also, a face mask made of Cinnamon and banana can nourish the skin adding a glow to it.

Nutmeg

Nutmeg helps reduce inflammation and irritation of the skin, promotes hydration, and gives your skin a smooth appearance. This delicious spice reduces the signs and marks of acne, and can also help with dry skin because it’s extremely moisturizing and assists exfoliation. The same reasons that make nutmeg super healthy for eating make this a key ingredient in skincare. The stimulating properties will certainly wake up dead skin cells and help those not-so-fine lines around your mouth fade. Nutmeg is known to have curative properties that heal scars caused by everything from acne to sunspots. To get a Nutmeg facemask, combine Lemon juice, Yoghurt and Nutmeg, apply a thick layer of this mask onto your face and let it stay for about seven to eight minutes and then rinse off with cold water.

Turmeric

Turmeric is one of the well-researched herbs on the planet. You can consider it the granddaddy of the anti-inflammatory spices. These characteristics provide glow and lustre to the skin. Turmeric revives your skin by bringing out its natural glow. It’s widely used as a skin exfoliant reduces pigmentation, evens out the skin tone and diminishes wrinkles. Also, Turmeric has been shown to significantly decrease the number of bacteria that typically trigger acne. To end the era of dull skin, quickly make a facemask with one teaspoon of honey, 1 teaspoon of milk and 1/4 teaspoon of turmeric. Apply it on your face and leave it on for 25 minutes and then wash off. This skincare routine will restore your natural glow.

Garlic

The moment you hear about stretch marks, all you wish is for them to vanish! Well, they are stubborn, and our skin is elastic. To reduce stretch marks can take a long time if you don’t put in extra effort to get rid of them. Hot oil massage with garlic may help reduce stretch marks, and you must try it with olive oil or mustard oil.

Ginger

Ginger is one of the most popular spices for skincare used today in cosmetology. This spicy root can improve skin tone, fight blemishes, and lighten age spots. It is full of anti-ageing antioxidants, anti-inflammatory compounds, minerals, and skin-brightening nutrients that can be of special benefit to those with rosaceous, acne, eczema, psoriasis, or an uneven complexion. It is not surprising that this spice is suitable for any type of skin. If you have oily skin, a ginger-based facemask can help reduce sebum production, which clogs the enlarged pores and promotes the development of problems such as acne and pimples. If your skin is dry and sensitive, Ginger can help protect you from a variety of adverse weather influences.
