Judging from pep history with players, Pep will probably use Ronaldo for the first few games. If he doesn't like what he sees, or Ronaldo doesn't play the way he wants, he will start chopping bench.

That initial list is not a CAF approved list for the competition. CAF will not send that list to the clubs. It will not come as an attachment with the email. CAF is not approving the contingency players. They can only enter the list in case of injuries before the tournament.

All in all, I also doubt that there is a contingency list somewhere. Any contingency has been accounted for when CAF decided to extend the squad size to a whooping 28 players.

So they expect everyone to plan around that number

By the way, the reason Rhor could use foreign based players as contingency is because those were international breaks. The AFCON is during the European clubs' playing window. It will be difficult to tell clubs to keep their players on standby in case someone injures in camp.

It's a FIFA approved competition though, it won't be hard to call on them during an emergency. The clubs are obligated to release them, as long as the players were included in the initial provisional list and the clubs were dully informed
