Someone please criticize my transcript.

Could the fact that my program start on March 3rd also be a reason?

Try and get admission in another state so it doesn't look like you are going to stay with your bro and not going school.

There is nothing unusual about a 320+ GRE score for a Nigerian.

Correct! only lazy nigerian youths say that

That’s a great question the school can answer. Obviously, one may not be able to open a U.S. account offshore. These are unprecedented times and ways are made around some things.

What I know is that the school either pays via direct deposit or mail a check which is good for 6 months.

For the records, I’m not in Nigeria.

Okay, I wanted to know if you got paid outside US while working remotely. when i was in Nigeria, I couldn't cash out a US check so I doubt if that's an option for those outside US.

You’ve raised some valid points but let me offer another perspective.

You can actually perform the role of a TA/GA (depending on what the role is) remotely. I did it. Professors still need graders and office-hours are still conducted online. RA role is tricky if you’re not in the U.S. so I can’t vouch for that.

You can get paid without a SSN. Schools can give you something in the form of a Temporary Control Number (TCN) pending the time you receive your SSN.

At this point, I would take what my school says as sacrosanct before making a final decision.

How will they pay the person if you are in Nigeria? How will the person open a US account. Did you get paid remotely while you were in Nigeria?

I have an existing ETS account with which I used to register my last GRE; the score was too encouraging. It was registered by the DUBIOUS AFFORDABLE TEST GUY, who left me with an outstanding balance of $240. That debt is very huge for me. I want to retake another GRE test.

Can I go ahead to create another new ETS account to register the GRE? The outstanding balance is equal to registering another GRE. I need your advice. Will ETS dictate it with my passport photo page details?

If the score is good, why not relax and look for money to pay it off

After the covid-19 is over, US might not be a place to go for now. Because everything is upside down. Unemployment hit the highest number in decades. A lot still going to lose jobs after September

If you are discouraged, please don't discourage others. This is a pandemic and affecting all countries. You can as well stay back your country than discourage others.

Texas Tech is being proactive here.

You can be in your house in Nigeria and be performing GA duties and getting paid.

No GRE or TOEFl? No problem.

The bolded got me laughing grin cheesy grin cheesy How will you get Social Security number without being in the US? Schools can't pay you without it

I guess this thread would die a natural death following the ban. Anyone advising you to apply for studies in the US is wicked

Read this to get a better understanding of the ban.

https://internationalcenter.umich.edu/travel-ban-update-international-center

Don't discourage people from applying to US. I advise everyone to keep up with the hustle, it will pay off.

Chairman I salute ooo. Have a great weekend

I later got a better understanding of the ban. it doesn't affect those in the US. It doesn't affect change of status in the U.S. it only affects overseas immigrant visa application, non-immigrant visa isn't affected. Immigrant visa is just a stamp needed to enter the USA permanently. Those in the US don't need the visa, they just need to adjust their status and adjusting status wasn't banned. I encourage those still seeking admission to US, not to lose hope. smiley

Hummmmmm deep. Is this true?

Tried to read some of it yesterday and it was vague so I left the news alone . If this is true. I wonder if it's only applicable to incoming student and not affecting students who are already there. It will be very unfair to those already there

If this is true then Nigerians shine your eyes. There no point schooling in USA especially if you are paying your hard earned money (hard truth)

The news is actually confusing but going with what Wall Street Journal reported, it might be true. Nice to see you again grin

Wow. Thank You for your reply! sorry, one more thing. What if I can prove the lump sum is legit as per it was put in the account solely for the purpose of education. Perhaps a land was sold or a loan was gotten by one of my Parents. Will there be less doubt considering it's a military pensioner's account?

US visa interview normally last less than 2mins most times, so you may not have the time to prove it. If it's Canada, UK or other countries, it's a different thing.

You are right. In fact, I have 3 ladies denied this Spring because of this "dumping of fund". The consulars are now trained to look for such first before they take in the SOA for verification. Based on those i know that were recently denied, the VO went through the transactions, noticed the dump, and return the statement and refuse them.
I hope your studies is going smooth? Glad you still come here to assist. God bless you!

Thanks for adding this, the person concerned will learn from it. Studies are going well bro, though the semester is about to finish so one will have more time to flex grin cos it has been assignment and test almost every week. Glad you are still helping out here, God bless you too.

Good evening guys,
I would like to ask some questions. If your sponsor has had constant money flow in their account (salary account) and huge sums of money are deposited in it a month or a couple weeks to one's visa interview would it be a red flag? Do they expect the sponsorship money to have been saved up for for a while?; Is it required that the sponsorship money be in the account for a long while? And is it acceptable for money to be taken out of the account as long as it doesn't interfere with the sponsorship money? sorry, I have a lot of questions. Please, I really need answers asap

In some cases it can be seen as red flag. For example, if your account balance has been reading 1m naira for over a year and suddenly 30m comes in within few weeks, it will raise some concerns and can be seen as redflag. so best thing is to avoid such scenario and find a way to build the account in time.

I was denied visa into u.s to study in August, masters in sociology but i had my first degree in Economics. How do i blend the two together during interview when next am going.... Kindly help a brother in need. thank you.

First, why do you want a masters in sociology? if you can answer that perfectly, you don't need to worry on blending it. Just like studying agriculture in undergraduate and later decide to study computer science for masters, I should know why i need a masters in computer and not worry about blending it with agriculture. Just get a good reason why you need masters on sociology, you will be fine.

Good day, house

Is it compulsory to go the embassy with the same financial statement that I used to get admission at the uni I applied to?

My previous sponsor can't get me an updated statement because they left the country for a few months, but I have a new sponsor.

you can use a different statement of account for your interview but make sure your school didn't indicate name of sponsor on your i20.

I'm looking for funding for any school. my profile is Bachelors degree(electrical engineering) but applying for software engineering for combined masters and PHD cos i'm a web developer. GRE 302, IELTS 6.0, GPA 2.8/4(after converting from naija uni). 2 Letter of recommendations from one professor and Dr from my graduating uni.
Can this profile get me full funding or even 50% scholarship. please house help. recommendations of school that can accept such profile.

Depend on schools you apply to... look schools that accept 2.8/4.0. Many leave their bench mark for PhD at 3.0/4.0, while some leave theirs at 3.5/4.0. So look for schools that match your profile.

I need an advise.

I have an admission for spring 2020 University of Alabama at Birmingham, no funding . I applied to Indiana university at Bloomington for same course with also hope for funding. Recently got a message from Indiana that my application has been forwarded to the department for admission review and will get a feedback in some weeks.

I hope it is not too late to get my I-20 from either schools and register for a visa interview for spring 2020.

not late, you still have from now till december

Guys I have full funding for a PhD I'm assistantship. My issue is that I want to go with my family to the US. I have 3 kids and MY wife making 4. I am wondering what the prospects will be in terms of settlement and living. And also how much cash will be enough for this.

That's a whole lots. Hope you have enough savings to cater for everyone? Though depends school, you need extra 3,000$ for each of your family members. some schools have higher requirement, some lower.

VISA denied on the 29th of August.
Lagos Consulate
VO: Window 4 (a blonde white woman in her early thirties)

My transcript went like this.

VO: Come along sir. Good morning, sir
Me: Good morning.
VO: Your passport, please... And also your I-20.
VO: I can see you are going to the University of Texas Health Science Center at Tyler and you are going for a Biotechnology program.
Me: Yes
VO: Why do you want to school in the US.
Me: The US boast of best, groundbreaking researches that are unmatched anywhere else in the world, especially in the area of Biomedical sciences, specifically in Cancer biology. Therefore, since I intend having a career as a research scientist in this field, I believe going to the United States for a masters program in Biotechnology is the best decision to make.
VO: Are you a graduate?
Me: Yes.
VO: Oh, what did you study?
Me: Pharmacology from the University of Lagos.
VO: oh so, you are a graduate of Pharmacology and want to go into Oncology?
Me: Yes.
VO: You do not have a working experience.
Me: I do. I have a year work experience during my NYSC that I completed in March this year, where I worked in a Pharmaceutical company as a Marketing Executive. My roles involved assisting the product managers in the management of the sales team.
VO: okay - though she didn't seem impressed - so, what have you been doing since then?
Me: I have been preparing for my graduate studies.
VO: So, what will this course do for you?
Me: I intend going for a phD degree, but currently don't have adequate research experience to enable me or qualify me to go for a phD program. Having a Master degree in this course will provide me the adequate experience and equip me towards a phD degree. Also, I am particularly interested in this program because aside being awarded a graduate assistantship, tuition scholarships and tuition remission, the school has a rich history in conducting intensive research in lung diseases like lung cancer. The school is even known as the East Texas Chest Center because of the high research activity in lung diseases (I began to stutter here, and apologized. She asked me to take my time and continue that she is trying to type in everything I was saying) These researches align with my interest. Also the school actively encourages students planning to further their studies by providing opportunities to publish their researches in Top science journals.
VO: I can see you have an assistantship of 12000 dollars, who is paying for the rest?
Me: My maternal uncle.
VO: What does he do?
Me: He is a successful business man that's into importation and sales of cars.
VO: Have you traveled out of the country before?
Me: I have not had the reason until now.
VO: Alright. I am sorry, I will not be approving your VISA, this paper will explain why (with a fake sad face undecided)
I wish you the best.

Although my school already resumed on the 19th and classes started this Monday - this was the first thing the man at the passport verification point noted. However the VO never made mention of it during the interview. I was certain I was denied because of the late resumption. But is it possible the VO didn't even notice it and denied me for another reason?

Well if you can avoid sponsors that deals with importation of cars, Please do. I sensed it's one of the things that delayed me alot too. other people has shared nice suggestions, let me not repeat them. Also if you are given MSc, talk about MSc and don't link PhD to it since you don't have adequate funding for PhD.

things has changed since 2016. it's not impossible but it's a no to me, very hard to get visa with if you already have a BSc. In all, it boils down to how you were able to convince the V.O on why you are going to a community college

VO- How many schools did you apply to?
ME- Honestly, I applied to only one college in America
VO- who is sponsoring you?
ME- My Mum is sponsoring you.
VO- What does your mother do?
ME- She has worked as a civil servant for more than 30years, She’s currently the Director of bla bla bla
VO- Have you travelled out before
ME- No

Ok sorry you have been found ineligible for a visa but you can reapply. Bla bla bla

I just kukuma collected my blue paper and disappeared. Am hoping to reapply soon. My program starts on Oct 1st
What are my chances and I don’t intend making any changes in my next application

Just wondering how you will use this course back home, it doesn't look like you can build any ties with it. Why do you want to study American Culture? Also if you have a BSc already, going to a community college is a No No.
