Why didnt you correct this before the inteview.... it's important that your i20 is accurate

Even 24k for PHD is no joke. Are you really wanting to spend that money ? . Dont be in a hurry to travel and get drown in financial stress. PHD deficit should never be this high?, if it is then continue school shopping

This looks like something UTD can do. It's common in Texas schools. Their deficit is always high

Hello guys this is my second time I was denied a u.s visa and this is is the transcript of my last interview

Me: good morning
Vo: good morning, pls pass me your passport .
Vo: where are you going to?
Me: am going to Saint cloud University Minnesota.
Vo: why st cloud University?
Me: well after my first degree on biotechnology I went on a research on school of technology in the United states and I came across st cloud University.  From my research I discovered that st cloud University is the best University in the whole of Minnesota I terms of technology cheesy for instance I discovered they have the latest laboratory tools and equipments such as the latest dna sequencing machine , hand pipette, the autoclave ,agitators to mention but a few and exposure to this practical environment will help me Hone and develop my practical skills because quality control and safety technology is entirely a practical course on its own. I would also be able to put to work some of the concept I was taught during my first degree as some of the courses offered are related to courses I encountered during my first degree there by making me a complete and a confident graduate in my field of specialization.
Vo: okay
Vo: who is your sponsor?
Me; my parents and I also have their statements here with me .
Vo: what do they do?
Me: my mom is a medical doctor at lasth and operates her private clinic at lagos also. My dad is a business man.
Vo: what does he do?
Me: he deals in automobile tyres
Vo: okay
Vo: what have you been doing since you graduated?
Me: well I have been working in my mom's clinic under the supervision of the chief laboratory scientist.
Vo: long pause!! Sorry you are not qualified for a us visa..then she hands the blue paper to me.
Couldn't identify the reasons why I was denied the visa in the first place...she didn't take a look at my statements also.

Additional information
Your year of graduation : 2017
Amount on I-20= 12,750
Living expenses=1450
Amount on SOA= 10mil + 8 mil= 18mil
Places you've traveled= dubia
Intended course of study= medical technology quality.
Previous qualifications = B.sc biotechnology
Standard examinations= gre, toefl and did evaluation of my results
Gre = 246
Toefl =92
Evaluation = 3.0

Where did you get that from? Best university in the whole of Minnesota in terms of technology grin grin

Where will you classify "University of Minnesota--Twin Cities"

Your GRE score is very poor sad

Vo: good morning with a smile
Me good morning. Smiled
Vo pass your I 20 and passport
Me. Did
Vo -- straight up, can I see a letter backing up your assistantship
Me: sure, so... I search for my funding letter o, took almost a minute.
Vo (while I was still searching for the letters) you're doing your masters? (With an irritated face or so)
Me yes, my final defence is in 2 weeks. Then I gave him the letters
Vo scrutinizes letter.
Plus, I gave him 3 letters. (Funding and contract award letter. Guess that's part of my mistake)
Vo does the letter cover all the 70k dolls,
Me yes, my funding covers all my tuition and stipends for the first semester and will be renewed for subsequent semesters.
Vo. No, you're not answering my question. Is your funding all the 70k dols?
Me. No, my uncle is paying for the rest, do you want to see his bank statements,
Vo no
Vo have you travelled out before
Me no, I haven't have the reason too, till now.
Vo, where does your uncle stay
Me. Lagos, ikorodu.
Vo.. Blabla..not eligible for the visa now... Blablabla.

bro for a deficit like this, what is the minimum balance that should be in the SOA?

If it's your parents, x1.5 of the amount or more should be there atleast. If it's your uncle/aunt/self, x2 of the amount or more should there

Visa delayed.
Good morning pass your I-20 and passport.

Q. How many other schools did you apply to?

Three

Q. Name them.

UCR, USF, LSU.
Q. How did you hear about the schools?

Last year at the annual conference of the Nigerian chapter of the American Chemical society, I networked with a few colleagues who recommended the schools I applied to.

Q. How many gave you admits?
I was rejected two and one waitlist for one.

Q. What kind of work will you be doing?

I will be working as a graduate assistant.

Q. Did you write the GRE?

Yes.

Q. What was your score?
301.

Q. What will you be doing when you return?
I will be returning to conduct research in organic medicinal chemistry. Will be using knowledge of chemistry for organic synthesis of new drugs that can be of medicinal use.

Q. Who is paying for the remaining 12k?

My Uncle.

Q. What does he do?

He imports and distributes building materials.

Can you pass his statement?

Q. Why is this statement not in your sponsor's name?
(froze, in my mind I think I said)
A.. It is a corporate business account owned by my sponsor.....( attempts to flip through the SOA)

Q. What is the name of your sponsor.
Told her.

Game over.
Pink.

Deficit of 12k after Tuition waiver and Assistantship. Sponsor's SOA was his business account.

We keep hammering this, go with a personal statement. Business accounts are not advisable, it only work in few cases. I guess you presented personal account to get your i20, now you are going with a business account.

Thank you very much. What I was trying to explain was that schools here have a low number of student intake if I'm not wrong most times they reveal the number of people they're taking in for specific courses. And I honestly wasn't trying to lie or anything I applied to unilag in my first year, had 296 and I was so close to the cut off but I wasn't given. A lot of people with lesser scores were offered alternatives, I was not. Perhaps I should have told the VO that I just didn't meet requirements. I was on the spot and I just said what I thought was best tbh

Hope you know that the money you want to spend in USA can get into many private schools here and you will have enough balance left. Saying there is quota doesn't make sense.

I never said it is not campus employment o. Haba, are you saying I did not know it is a form of employment? I know, sister.
What I am saying is that, hardly do I see "employment" written in the place of "Graduate Assistantships", or "Tuition Waiver Scholarship", which would have been better. I am still not sure if employment is actually stated. But if that word is stated, the consular might been thinking differently, and in my opinion, this is what I see as a major reason for the refusal.

Some schools write it as on campus employment. All students are allowed to do on campus work. So that can never be an issue

20% scholarship which apparently is given to everyone is merely 3k dollars.

Still leaving a total of over 28k dollars.

Lots of financial support is still needed.

That's the average cost for most schools in USA. I won't say it's very high.

Did you make mention of your partial scholarship ?

I know UH has a very high Cost..

And I think there is a sort of disconnection in your SOA.

What's the closing balance and what's your total deficits?

UNH doesn't have high cost for graduate studies. Without scholarship, it's 30,640$.

From the transcript, the V.O didn't ask him for any bank statement.

Well, I think you could have submitted it. The VO who interviewed you might not be the one who got your documents from DHL. I don't know how they run the stuff but I think the reason for your refusal is a "misconception". The person/people who reviewed the SOAs feel the closing balance won't be enough - not knowing you had a scholarship.

My thinking BTW. You can reapply bro.

Do you think they can't view the funding details from their system through sevis?

.... Good day house .....

Went for interview at Lagos consulate today....
The V.O was just asking and i was answering.... Until he asked, how many schools did you apply for?? In truth, I applied only one, but my Uncle and his people advised me to say 3 or more ..... So,
V.O : how many schools did you apply for??
Me : 3
V.O : name them
Me : Southeast east Missouri State University, Long island University and Columbia University
V.O : Do you have GRE??
Me : No
V.O : How did you apply for Columbia without GRE .....
... Ghen ghen, nai my mind cut.. I began to muster and mumble words like: yeah, I applied Southeast and Long Island. And then,
V.O : But you said you applied Columbia
Me : yes, they didn't require GRE....

The next thing, nai V.O give me pink paper and said:
Sorry, you don't qualify. So, what do I do next?? Candid opinions please

You need better slap. Read what you typed and see if you will approve yourself. You went there to disgrace yourself, not your uncle.

My third time ... just one question

Typing for a long time
Vo : what have chance in you ?
me : Fully prepared than before
Vo : sorry , you are ineligible for visa this time

One thing you should know is, no V.O will like to override his colleagues decision without a tangible change in your story. He/she believe the first V.O that interviewed you did a good job. They also have seniors. Before they will overrule your previous refusal decision, something good must have changed. So next time, prepare a good answer on what have changed.

Dear Nairalanders,

I have a question.
How can someone secure funding in US schools for a professional study while working as a TA/GA?

Let me explain.
I'm interested in professional development and not in deep research.

My target study areas are in Information Systems, Software Engineering and Product Management.

I would like suggestions for safe school and tips on how I can strategize my application.

I already have top schools like Berkley, CMU and UIUC

Professional programs are not funded as TA/RA. You might get some scholarship

I already have the contracts in my mail.
Can I go to the embassy with the i-20 and show the VO my contract or do I need to ask for another i-20.
Actually, I don't have the fund to order for another i-20.

Lol. I understand your point but it's not my first time of appearing before a visa officer. I had a B1/B2 visa for years and I made my comments based on my experience in the course of different interviews as well as my experience traveling to the United States. You cannot rule out God factor; some things are beyond human explanation.

Mind you, I do not have a full scholarship and my deficit is about $30,000 and no one requested to see any SOA from me today at the embassy.

Did you get the funding from a top school? Something played in your favour. Is it university of Pennsylvania?

I pop up to say a word or two once in a while but my personal view, if you ask me, is that vetting transcripts is way overrated. If you are a serious student, did most of the work yourself and are honest, you should have no problem answering the visa interview questions. Most of us need vetting because we didn’t do the work and this is simply a route to emigrate. So we rely on the words of others to get us through what should be a relatively straightforward process. 15 years ago there was nothing like vetting transcripts, students still obtained f1 visas. No one should really be vetting your answer on why you chose your course of study. It is your decision, your destiny.
As simple as that. cheesy.

Because to be frank, the “god” being invoked here is a figment of the imagination of many who have relegated God to no better than a visa approver. The same God you pray to is the same God the Americans pray to as well. That same God says we should be respectful of government authority, including US visa rules.

Okay, i understand you better now.
