amnestylaw1: You are right- no knowledge is wasted. There is nothing wrong in studying for professional or personal development. The degree might be useful in Nigeria, but you may not be able to embark on the NYSC or get exemption certificate. If your aim to secure PRIVATE employment, once you can defend what you have on paper, you may get hired. All the best with your studies. You will need to have your secondary school send OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS of all the courses/subjects you did in secondary school to Uopeople after you submit your application. When you get to the final stage, you will write about 5 to 7 essays or so. Also, you will need to buy a scratch card for either NECO or WAEC and send it to the school along with your other documents so they can verify your results.
For you and any other person considering UoPeople, I am copying part of the emails I got from them sometimes ago. They talk about the supporting documents that you'll need to send after your application has been successfully submitted online.
Required Documentation
1. Your printed and signed cover sheet- available in the Forms and Transcripts section of your online application.
2. Your high school diploma, or its equivalent, and a high school transcript in one of the following formats*:
a. An official copy of the diploma and transcript sent directly by the institution (e.g. Ministry of Education, High School) to University of the People.
b. The original diploma and transcript.
c. A photocopy of the original diploma certified by a notary public or an official authority (e.g. Ministry of Education, High School).
*If your diploma and transcript are not in English, please send the diploma and transcript in their original language (in one of the formats mentioned above), along with an official, accurate, word-for-word translation of both documents into English. Translations should be issued by the issuing institution, the Ministry of Education, or by a professional translator/translation company, and must be certified by a notary public.
3. English proficiency requirement – if you are a non-native English speaker, or you graduated from an institution where English was not the primary language of instruction, please click here to view which English proficiency documents you may submit to be considered for admission to an undergraduate program. Please note that all documents submitted must be original documents OR notarized photocopies, bearing original stamps and signatures from a notary public or the issuing institution.
If you do not hold one of the qualifications listed, or if your score falls below the minimum score required, and you have met all other Admissions requirements, you will be considered for admission as a non-degree special student. In order to become a degree-seeking student on an undergraduate program, you would be required to successfully pass the course English Composition 1 (or equivalent).
4. Computer Science proficiency requirements – if you have selected Computer Science as your desired program, please submit one or more of the following qualifications: strong high school mathematics preparation, prior college-level work in mathematics and/or computer science, and/or work-related experience in this area.
If you do not hold one of the qualifications listed, you will be considered for admission as a non- degree special student. In order to become a degree-seeking student on an undergraduate program in Computer Science, you would be required to successfully pass MATH 0101 Developmental Algebra. Please note the final examination is proctored and the course may not be used to meet the requirements of any UoPeople degree program.
*Please note that non-degree special students starting term may be delayed in one term.
Please send the above listed documents to:
University of the People Office of Admissions 225 S. Lake Ave. Suite 300 Pasadena, CA. 91101 USA
* Please note that if you are sending documents that contain multiple pages, all pages must bear certifying stamps and signatures. * Please note that all submitted documents become the property of University of the People, and cannot be returned. * Before mailing your forms, be sure to make photocopies for your records. * Please contact admissions@uopeople.org before mailing your forms if you are not clear about what to send.
ANOTHER EMAIL
Please note while we can accept your WAEC and NECO certificates, your scratch cards must be sent front and back along with high school transcripts.
Notarized Secondary School Transcript: Your transcript must bear certifying stamps and signatures from a certified notary public or from an administrator of the issuing institution. Transcripts should list the courses you completed and grades earned for those courses for each year of secondary school. A statement of your WAEC results issued by your secondary school does not constitute a transcript. Please note that your school should provide you with your transcripts and not the WAEC.
WAEC scratch card: A photocopy or scan of a WAEC scratch card (both sides) must be presented for each WAEC Certificate you submit. Please note that the photocopy or scan must be of both sides of the scratch card.
**A NECO Certificate and NECO scratch card may be used in place of a WAEC Certificate and scratch card. Please note that all submitted documents become the property of University of the People, and cannot be returned.
Our address is: University of the People Office of Admissions 225 S. Lake Ave. Suite 300 Pasadena, CA 91101, USA
Once we have received all required application materials, your application will be processed for the next available Term. After sending your documents, you can check your application status online by logging into your UoPeople online application with your email address and password. Thanks for this. Am still filling the form. |

amnestylaw1: Hey there, I am sorry I forgot to respond to your question. Regarding its acceptability in Nigeria, it depends. This is a school that is recognised by the US Department of Education. It is a school that is accredited by the Distance Education Training Council (DETC). Though the school is accredited and recognised in the US, its utility is not compared to that of a Regionally accredited US school. In US, schools can be accredited by a regional accreditor or national accreditor. Regional accreditation is the most sought after and the gold standard in accreditation. Its processes are rigorous compared to National accreditation. Many countries prefer to recognise ONLY US degrees earned from REGIONALLY ACCREDITED school.
Now, for Nigeria, the problem is more of whether the degree was earned via distance learning. I was a student of the University of London International Programmes. As popular and respected as UoL is, its Law degrees offered through its International Programs are distance learning degrees and as such, the Nigerian Council of Legal Education does not accept them for admission into Nigerian Law schools. Also, the NYSC does not admit you into its services. So, when it comes to UoPeople, University of London International programs, or any other school for that matter, I often advise people to try to earn their degrees from a campus based institution with evidence of class attendance- if they wish to serve in the NYSC or get an exemption certificate. But, if like me, you are based abroad and wishes to you the degree for employment purposes abroad, you are likely to have no problem whatsoever since Uopeople is recognised by the US Department of Education and perhaps CHEA. In US, any national accredited degree can get you a government job and even private jobs too. I don't know whether my sermon answers your question. Please feel free to ask any other question. Thank you sir for taking out time to answer me. I have started the application. I am now in step 4. I applied for computer science. Even if the certificate is not valuable in Nigerian labour market, I still need to upgrade my knowledge of computer because knowledge acquired can not be a waste. |

Had we lost the General, the reaction from his supporters and fanatics could easily have plunged Nigeria into its worst chaos in a long time.
Nigeria is a land of the absurd, the strange and the illogical. So last Wednesday, General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd) organized to kill himself? Well, that is what those who see Nigeria through the lens of the 2015 elections want us to believe. There are many things wrong with politics and politicians in Nigeria but General Buhari is well and truly above that. Even his opponents admit he is well and truly above board when it comes to the shame and corruption that accompany Nigerian politics. There was clearly a suicide bomber and the bomber was obviously desperate to ensure the retired General was part of his eventual carnage. The incident has since happened, scores have died and Nigerians in their usual way have moved on. Had we lost the General, the reaction from his supporters and fanatics could easily have plunged Nigeria into its worst chaos in a long time.
We have a problem on our hands as terrorists continue not just to maim and kill but to set us against one another. Following each terrorist attack are the accusations and counter accusations. “They know only Igbos sell in that market, so they chose that market to bomb of all places in the north,” is a classic response from a bomb blast that ripped through Kano in northern Nigeria. It did not matter to the person who wrote the words that there is no way anyone would bomb a public place in Kano and not kill more northerners. Even if we took for granted that only a particular ethnic group sells wares in a selected Kano market, should we also assume all the customers and buyers are from the same place? When bombs go off in a church, you are likely to read, “this people are only killing Christians, it is a war against Christians.” You are not likely to read anything from such people when a Mosque gets attacked or when the insurgents kill a revered Islamic scholar. Those who see the world through their bias often times do not see it through the eyes of logic. So they are not likely to remember than bombs are not capable of separating people into ethnic or religious groups, bombs kill and maim everyone within the radius of impact.
That is the same logic to apply when someone like General Buhari survives a major attack that had his vehicles destroyed. That if the terrorists could strike right at a point where one of the nation’s could easily have been killed, they can get anyone. If they missed a major Islamic cleric by a matter of minutes and have killed some other ones, they certainly do not discriminate in terms of their intent; they want to kill anyone not open supportive of their evil and they are not afraid to go after high profile targets just as they kill the poor every other day if not everyday in the northeast.
We need a bi-partisan approach to the war on terror. We are of course not likely to get it soon if someone as highly involved as the minister of state could share an article link claiming one of the major opposition parties is supportive of Boko Haram. This is despite the fact that Boko Haram predates the party by at least 10 years. How can we have a bi-partisan approach to this war if politicians across the board insist on making this more about the 2015 elections than about what it is; a war on our country, our people and our way of life?
And if politicians insist on making it political all the time, what is the role of citizens and civil society? If the numbers get crunched, Nigeria’s poor masses have suffered a lot more in the hands of terrorism. The least we can do is to stop echoing the voices of those who insist on making this about politics and nothing else.

amnestylaw1: Hi, to quickly answer your question about the exam fees, the school administers exams at $100 for end-of-course exams. This means that if in the Business Administration, there are 40 courses that one will take for the entire degree, then one will be required to pay ONLY $100 at the end of each course. So, 40 courses will be multiplied by $100 to make it $4000. Actually, UoPeople BS in Bus Admin has 40 courses which will cost $4000 in total for the exams only. Online books and tutorials are free. You only pay for exam at the end of each course.
To pay, you can use any credit/debit card to pay online on their website. You can ask a friend, family member or relative in the US or overseas to help you pay. I am copying payment info from the school webpage at http://uopeople.edu/groups/tuition-free-universities as you can see, even those who cannot to pay the $100 end of course exam fee may still get scholarship to cover those. Thanks for your reply. One more thing pls, is the certificate recognised in the Nigerian labour market? |

McWhillion: YOU'RE WELCOME
The 24 yards fence reps the perimeter of the area. For maximum movement, its preferable that the area should be a square.
The formula for the perimeter of a square is 4L..
Therefore, 4L = 24 yards L = 6yards.
Therefore the area should be 6 yards by 6 yards. *DO NOT CONFUSE AREA WITH PERIMETER. Thanks, I thought has much. |
Education › Re: Mathematicians In The House Please Help Me by Timijo(op): 8:00pm On Jul 22, 2014 |
McWhillion: 1. Let Peter =P, Musa= M, John =J P=M+10 M=J+18 Therefore(express P and M in terms of J), P =J+18+10 P=J+28
And M=J+18…
P+M+J = #67 ==(J+28)+(J+18)+j = #67 3J+#46 =#67 3J=#21 J=#7
J=#7, M= #7+#18=#25 P= #7+#28=#35
John gets#7, Musa gets #25 and Peter gets #35
2. Musa’s donation =2% of his salary = 0.02M Sam’s donation = 1% of his salary = 0.01S
Therefore, 0.02M + 0.01S = #24000 Also, M = #3000+S
Therefore, 0.02(#3000 + S) + 0.001S = #24000 #60 + 0.02S + 0.01S = #24000 0.03S = #23940 S= #798,000 M= #798,000+ #3000 =#801,000
Musa’s annual salary is #801,000 Thanks, I have understood it through your working, God bless you. Pls look at this one for me: suppose you wish to rear domestic animal in your home and you intend to indentify an area which 24 yards fence, what are the dimension of the area that will allow maximum movement of the domestic animal within the surrounding. Am thinking about 4 and 6. |
Education › Re: Not For The Weak Minds; Try This Quantitative Reasoning Question. by Timijo(m): 6:29pm On Jul 22, 2014 |
CarlOzeki: The easiest and quickest way to solve the question is to pick a number
Assume Kelly had #100. She leaves home with 20% of that (#20) and leaves #80 at home.
The manufacturers list price is 25% higher than her #20. This is 125% or 1.25 x 20 which is #25 (Manufacturer List price)
The inflation adjusted price is 50% of what she left at home. This is 50% or 0.5 x 80 which is #40 (Inflation adjusted price)
The inflation adjusted price represents a 14 2/7% mark up on the original price. 14 2/7 is 100/7%. Since it's a markup, the inflation price is (100 + {100/7})% of the original price. This is 800/7%. Changing that to fraction is 8/7. Hence, 8/7 x original price = Inflation adjusted price = #40. Original price = 40 x 7/8 = #35
We have all the prices now.
1. Difference between original price and initial/manufacturer price = 35 - 25 = 10 10/100 = 0.1 The answer to the first question is 10% if considering her total #100 or 12.5% if considering only the money she left at home.
2. This question makes no sense because the item has not actually been sold so there can't be any profit. If you assume the profit from selling at the markup price of #40 and also assuming that the cost price is the manufacturer list price of #25, then the profit is #15. Hence the markup price percentage of the profit is 40/15 = 266.7% Please help me with these questions: 1. You are given #67 and you are asked to divide between Peter, Musa and John such that Peter will have #10 more than Musa and Musa will have #18 more than John. 2. Musa donate 2% of his annual salary to community development in his locality and Sam donate 1% of his annual salary to the community. The total donation of both Musa's and Sam's is #24,000. If Musa makes #3000 more than Sam, how much is Musa annual salary? Thanks for helping. |
