Politics › Rapists To Face Life Imprisonment Under New Law – Reps by Tolexander(op): 6:49pm On Feb 07, 2013
ABUJA - Chairman, House Committee on Human Rights, Hon. Beni Lar, said, Wednesday, that rapists would face life imprisonment once the current Violence Against Persons Bill becomes law.

Lar, who made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Abuja, said the National Assembly had decided to expedite action on the passage of the bill, considering the increasing prevalence of rape in the country.

She pointed out that the bill would not only protect rape victims but equally provide protection for victims of violence including physical, sexual, psychological, domestic, harmful traditional practices and discrimination.

She said: "My only concern is that in our laws today, the punishment for rape is very light and that is why you find people committing rape against children. It's unfortunate.

"It is because of issues like this that it has come to the attention of the National Assembly that we have the Violence Against Persons Bill.

"It is a bill that seeks to eliminate violence in private and public life, to prohibit all forms of violence including physical, sexual, psychological, domestic, harmful traditional practices, discrimination against persons and provide maximum protection and effective remedies for victims and punishment for offenders.

"Part one of this bill, which has passed second reading in the House, defines a rapist as one who intentionally violates another person and the conviction for this offence is life imprisonment.

"The National Assembly is seeking to stiffen punishment for rape because the punishment has been so light. People feel they can do it easily and get away with it but once this bill is passed you would think twice before committing rape because they can go to jail for life."

Why not repairing the road which is the major cause of the accidents to prevent the accident instead of spending money on the ambulance. So the ambulance will be ploring the bad roads

You all call Victor Moses the leading man that will lead the super eagles to the glory affliating his role to that of the biblical Moses that lead the Israelites to the promised land. Do you remember that the Biblical Moses didn't reach the promised land?
Exactly what you have unknowingly professed to Victor Moses.

the baby's name is supposed to be ELIJAH cos elijah was lifted up by the bicycle of fire(keke ina) in the Bible.
Imagine the irony of life! A woman gave birth to a baby alive safely with ease in a tricycle. And another woman with a befitting labour ward with all medical apparatus and equipment will still have a difficult delivery or even death of either the mother and baby or both happening.

chiover: had scanned tru d link u provided and understood ur angle of accessment of the war but mortality and mobidity ratio favours the americans
ya! The mortality and morbidity favored the americans in that they had less death recorded than the vietnamese. But the field of the battle was indochina(vietnam, cambodia, laos) so there are very high morbidity recorded for the vietnamese i.e both the military and civilians.
The essence of my illustration is that the operation tried devastating the vietnamese but was not successful. So also the porn video may not be successful for the boko haram.

this seems to be getting to a national issue.
Why will some states be leaderless all in the name of power retaining by a decapacitated governor. I think there should be a law that will reveal the health status of our leaders periodically and see if they still have the mental and physical strenght to lead.
The next thing you start seeing is the looting of the state resources by the wife or family of the governor.
Don't be suprised tomorrow hearing the deputy governor saying he never said so.

tonychristopher: ARE THEY SCIENCE MINDED. WAS THERE ANY TYPE OF COLONIAL DOMINATION TO THEM, BUT OTHER TRIBES IN NIGERIA WERE RULED BY BRITHIAN AND ITS ONLY IGBO TRIBE IN AFRICA I THINK THAT HAS INDIRECT RULE BY COLONIALIST AND THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES THAT FOUGHT COLONIALIST IN A FULL SCALE WAR VIA AROCHUKWU RTC... SO WHATS YOUR TAKE .. THEY MIGHT HAVE THAT JEWISH GENES
encyclopaedia: African Empire
The ideological underpinnings,
as well as the practical
application, of indirect rule in
Kenya and Nigeria is usually
traced to the work of Frederick
Lugard, the High Commissioner
of the Protectorate of Northern
Nigeria from 1899 to 1906. In
the lands of the Sokoto Caliphate,
conquered by the British Empire
at the turn of the century, Lugard
instituted a system whereby
external, military, and tax control
was operated by the British,
while most every other aspect of
life was left to local pre-British
aristocracies who may have
sided with the British during or
after their conquest. The theory
behind this solution to a very
practical problem of domination
by a tiny group of foreigners of
huge populations is laid out in
Lugard's influential work, The
Dual Mandate in British Tropical
Africa.
http://www.historians.org/tl/lessonplans/nc/trask/indirect.htm go and study your history very well. The north even started the indirect rule before the south.
What were the resistance possed by the Igbos? Bt least we heard of king Jaja of Opobo, we heard of the Oyo resistance, Sokoto Caliphate resistance.
