I really dont know what the west stands to gain via supporting boko haram. If its to control the economy, they are already doing just that. With the likes of jonathan, and iweala at abuja, they shape our govt policies e.g subsidy removal, continous pressure to devalue the naira. If its our oil, na their companies they drill am, and na dem they control the price. If its to destabilize nigeria and then use it as an excuse to move in and recolonize us, they had 2 opportunities in the past but they let it pass: 1. The june 12 crises in the 90s that nearly tore nigeria apart and 2. The nigerdelta crises that crippled the economy of that region and sent oil price skyrocketing worldwide. In both cases the western powers were highly instrumental in curtailing these crises- 1. elimination of abacha and abiola, thus putting an end to june 12 2. Pressurizing obasanjo and yardua to appoint a nigerdelta to the presidency and initiating the amnesty program for the militants respectively. IMO, the west stand to gain a lot in a stabilized nigeria and i will highlight few reasons: 1. Stable and uninterrupted supply of crude oil to the international market 2. Averting an unavoidable serious refugee crises that may arise in event of a civil insurgency- who will accomodate 170 million people 3. They need our military as infantry in their quest to establish a stronghold in africa. There are no end to conspiracy theories, but we need to think in order to make out valid deduction. |
I think we've all learnt a big lesson now - half knowledge is a disease and the worrisome part is that its highly infectious. The treatment is for we nigerians to develop a healthy reading habit and to be highly observant- majority of the ignorant ogun state audience and their fans on nairaland actually partcipated in the nysc scheme. @naptu- a man's explanation seems right until another comes and corrects him. Keep it up. |
quality01: I'm looking for a church where wealthy single ladies attend in lagos. I want to meet a nice lady for a serious date.try and join naija christian dating sites, that may help. But this one wey u come mention 'wealthy' get as he be. By the way, dont u meet matured single ladies outside of church? Dem plenty now. And why do u attract shallow minded girls in ur everyday life? When it comes to relationship, Like attracts like. I bet if u go church, na the same kind girls u go dey attract. Maybe u need to work a little bit on urself. |
Dont kid urself. A guy that proposes to u solely because of ur good job doesnt love u, he's only interested in ur money and it's unlikely such a guy will eventually tie the knot. A guy set standard for himself and goes for a woman who possess this qualities, but the utmost remains love. Guys rarely compromise on this unlike women. I've seen female bankers, doctors, and lawyers got dumped and I know a lot of over-riped working class single ladies. |
Though I don't subscribe to drugs but I don't see why the school should expel them for doing drugs.I think NUC should look into the activities of private universities in Nigeria.
possession of hard drugs is illegal in Nigeria, it's a punishable crime. Besides they were offered drug rehab by the school but they rejected it. What else do u want the school's authorities to do? |
190: OPand u think that will put an end to the issue? |
thelastPope: Have you ever seen pictures from Nigeria like the one you see from Ethiopia? Nigerians in rural areas eat good food. They lack other amenities. The food in the rural areas are standard foods that an average American will pay good money to eat. Vegetables, fruits, bush meat in abundance. Where some people even lack access to foods are in the urban areas.i know thats the problem, we believe malnutrition is synonymous with war, somalia, dafur, refugee camps, an hunger infested child with a pathetic figure and a vulture nearby to prey on the child ones he's abandoned. Undernutrition has grades, the one highlighted above is the rare extreme. And besides, poverty and food insecurity not war are the commonest cause undernutrition worldwide. Now, concerning rural areas. I agree they seldom have issues with food quantity, but how about quality? Inadequacy of the latter is poor meal and such people will definitely will have problems with kwashiokor and marasmus. And that to me is inadequate access to food. Besides those bush meat, snails and cat fish(eja odo) dont come cheap u know, they are quite expensive. |
thelastPope: You are as wrong as the don. There is no lack of adequate access to food. If you want to argue about the quality of food, then that is another discussion. What Nigerians lack is access to basic infrastructure not access to foods. Basic health care, pipe borne water, education, roads, etc. The number of people that lack access to food is small. Most Nigerian still live in the rural areas and in the rural areas, food is not a problem at all.check out the word undernutrition. Malnutrition is not all about poor food quality. |
The don said 40% of nigerians lacked ADEQUATE access to food, lets learn to read properly. Personally to me thats an underestimation, I will rather put it at 70%. The worst hit are children(age 1-9yrs) and the elderly. Undernutrition is a serious problem in our society and it reflects in our children's below par growth curve and delayed physical developmental milestone. Also the recurrent infectious illnesses common among infants and aged depicts poor immunity which points to poor nutrition. Pregnant women are also victims, she has to eat more than enough both for herself and the child. In most developing countries this is a challenge. Poor nutrition is one of the cause of high maternal mortality in countries like nigeria. Of course we all eat, at least 1ce a day but so long as food is a luxurious necessity, then undernutrition will remain a burden in Nigeria. That's what the don is saying. |

Princess1982: I mean sit back and think there are no foreign military bases on US soil but yet the US military has bases in all corners of the world if China so call do wage war on the US the US would see it coming beside China owns 90% of our 16 trillion dollar debt I hardly think they would want to attack until they at least get back some of their money lol.actually china owns 7% of U.S debt app 1.15 trillion dollars and not 90%. however they remain the single largest buyer of U.S bonds and securities. They also also owns 24% of U.S foreign debt, closely followed by japan. |
Akiika: Ah ah ah! what an unintelligent analysis!can u explain ur comment? Its obviously unclear |
Sincerely, what business do we have in mali? 1. Has there been an established intelligence report that links boko haram with those malian islamist rebels or the whole thing is based on unfounded sentimental assumption. If indeed SSS or DMI told us there are links, how reliable? I hope they aint doctored report. CIA said the same thing about iraq until we realized they were bogus report. 2. Now concerning the malian crisi;, is it just a routine domestic insurgency common to most african countries or a trans border spread of terror? Most african rebel groups are not known for promoting pan african ideology, all they care about is unseating the govt in power and controlling the state resources. 3. Even if the malian rebels are really into spreading their extremist ideologies across borders, mali is not our direct neighbour, we dont share a border with them. Why dont we allow algeria, niger, burkina faso, and mauritania (their direct neighbours) send in foot soldiers while we provide financial, technical, logistic and moral support. Besides francophone countries should take the lead role not anglophones. I dont want us fighting other people's battle. |
coogar: $240/month shouldn't be expensive if the two of you are into full-time employment. of course, he would be willing to pay 75% upwards of the cost of hiring a maid. a less-stressed wife is a bonus!except they are a upper middle class family, $240/month is good money that could go into other meaningful things other than wasting it on housemaid (particularly if they reside in u.k). Besides she still has to manage daily domestic chores which is actually the real work. |
I dont seem to understand men's obsession with employed women. If your preference is educated/career minded ladies, that's o.k. But insistence on a working class lady; to me thats myopic. can't she lose that job after getting married thus automatically becoming a housewife. What happens then? Terminate the marriage or what? Some of my male friends got married to bankers who today are full housewives. |
kingofhiphop101: SORRY, ypzilanti BUT ARE YU AWARE THAT MOST OF THE DRUGS THAT MAKE IT TO HUMAN USE, HAVE THEIR DEADLY SIDE EFFECTS TOO??their benefits outweighs the risk, if otherwise the drug is withdrawn from the public. Thats why lab and clinical trials are very important. |
ogb5: But we already have a cure for hiv/aids in naija.you be correct guy, surely, u're the true son of ur father. Also called awogbaarun |
Eziachi: People should not make bold statement over issue they don't have all the facts. As an orthopaedic surgeon of close to 40 years I have lots of experience on this issue than most do. I know for a fact that there is no policy among Jehovah Witnesses's not to receive transfusion as a blanket law. Its down to individual and am hundred percent sure that the lady in question has taken that decision in the event like this through her verbal instruction or what we call medical life will and not by her family. |

Its down to individual and am hundred percent sure that the lady in question has taken that decision in the event like this through her verbal instruction or what we call medical life will and not by her family.I understand your stand on blood transfusion, but some of ur claims are bogus and coming from a surgeon is quite disturbing. 1. Not all cases of blood loss requires blood transfusion, most chronic anaemia are managed with blood substitute except in few cases. Even in acute blood loss mild cases are treated with plasma expanders and oxygen, so STOP making it seem like nigerian doctors dont know what they are doing and are only interested in forcing blood down the throat of all their patients. 2. Provide studies/evidence (not opinion) that shows clearly that blood transfusion kills more lifes than it saves otherwise retract the statement. 3. That the commonest route of contacting hepatitis and HIV in the u.k is via blood transfusion says a lot about the nhs labs in that country and that to me is a very big mystery and a serious indictment on u.k healthcare system. 4. Just like every other medical procedure, blood transfusion has its own risk and complication, the blood substitutes also have side effects and complications, so stop painting one like a saint and the other a demon. 5. Acute blood loss is not an indication for EPO therapy, and blood transfusion in cases of severe blood loss produces immediate response and not 48hrs as u alighted 5. I agree efforts are being made to provide alternatives to blood transfusion, trials are ongoing and initial result is encouraging e.g synthetic hemoglobin concentrates but will the jw people embrace this new technologies? At least they rejected autologous blood transfusion 6. Stem cell transplantation is good but there are moral and ethical factors to consider, these stem cells produce the blood cells in contention, and if the jw can refuse the offsprings, will they accept the precursors? Moreover, they dont come cheap, and are not useful in the mgt of acute blood loss. We may not like it but blood products replacements remains a viable option in saving patients life in our hospitals, at least for now. |
UNLEASHED: I'm new on this forum, please how do I get banned? |
initiator: The football analogy given by aribisala is perfect in arguing against his point. Europe is the smallest continent bu has the most representatives at the worldcup. Reason? They are better footballers! So while Fifa helped to foster global unity by including other continents, it did not disadvantage the majority of footballing nations. When Africa started improving their slots were raised from 3 to 5.i'm not sure u're quite correct. African, asian and concacaf slots at world cup weren't increased because of improvement in previous competition instead because of increased number in W.C participants. When fifa increased the no from 24 to 32, 7 of the extra places were allocated to fifa's weaker affiliated region to ensure better representation at global level. That these extra nations have proven to be merely walk overs and are killing the competitive spirit the world cup is known for and calls have been made that those extra slots should have been allocated to europe and south america, does not mean fifa should reverse the original purpose of behind the idea. That's the point aribisala and co established about unity schools. |
as for the north having lower cut-off, the question is how many still end up going to school. how many northerners attend federal schools in the south from the north? i attended fed sch in the south but that was becos i lived there. we were just 2 notherners among all the southerners that got admission that year. in the six years i spent, number of northern student who attended the fed school were less than five. but u have southerners who still flood the northern fed schs because the schs in the south couldnt admit them all. my point is: 1. the southern students score far better than the northern students and will surely get more admission places, the fact here is 90 perecent of northerners donot go to schs in the south, so the issue of their presence denying other better student admission isnt there. the competition in the south is within you southerners and nothing to do with low cut off for the north unless u are applied to a sch in north wic u are most likely to get. [/quote stiff competition among southern students explains the problem. It has nothing to do with northerners. Lets not cry foul where there is none. |
munas: At the bolded, there is nothing like federal character system in the US as obtained in Nigeria.actually there is, it's called affirmative action. A process whereby blacks, minorities and women are given special consideration over mainstream white in university admission, employment, public works and govt contracts. |

munas: At the bolded, there is nothing like federal character system in the US as obtained in Nigeria.actually, there is. It's called affirmative action. Special consideration is given to blacks, minorities and women above the mainstream white. Its been in existence for over 40 yrs now and many successful blacks benefitted from it. However, I'll admitt its very unpopular and calls have been made to end it. Some have even challenged it in court. |
cap28: can i have examples of other african countries with the same colonial experience that have moved forward? In Asia; india, singapore, malaysia, indonesia, thailand, vietnam middle east: qatar, bahrain, U.A.E, kuwait. you may argue that these countries are oil rich states but so also is nigeria, algeria, equitorial guinea, angola, and gabon. we need an holistic approach to this problem and should not limit our scope to africa, or else we wont come to the understanding of what post colonial development is all about. if states in other continent can overcome the burden of colonial imperialism and move forward, I see no reason why african countries should still be groping in darkness and battling with colonial mentality more than 50 yrs after independence. That the world is yet to produce her first successful black nation goes a long way to show that the problem is within and not from the former colonial powers |
Doctors at Singapore hospital, where victim was flown, say she had already endured three surgeries and a cardiac arrest. The condition of an Indian ra.pe victim, who was flown to Singapore further treatment is "extremely critical", according to doctors at the city’s Mount Elizabeth Hospital. "As at [11:00 GMT] the patient remains in an extremely critical condition. Prior to her arrival, she has already undergone three abdominal surgeries and experienced a cardiac arrest in India," Dr Kelvin Loh, chief executive officer at the hospital, said in a statement on Thursday. "A multi-disciplinary team of specialists is taking care of her and doing everything possible to stabilise her condition," Loh said. The victim, a 23-year-old paramedic student, was flown to Singapore from New Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital where she was under treatment since she was assaulted on a bus on December 16. She sustained horrific injuries in the gang rape in New Delhi, the Indian capital, which has seen rising number of crimes against women. The Indian government, which is paying for the woman's treatment, approved the decision to transfer her. According to police and prosecutors, six men took turns to rape the woman and assault her with an iron bar, leaving her with intestinal injuries, before they threw her out of a bus that they had taken for a joyride. All six of the alleged attackers have now been arrested and remanded in custody. Police say the six were drunk and were joy-riding in an off-duty bus with tinted windows when they picked the unsuspecting pair comprising the victim and her male companion up as they were returning from a night out at the cinema. The men then took turns in raping the student at the back of the bus, according to police and prosecutors. During her assault, the victim suffered serious intestinal injuries from being beaten with an iron rod. The bus was said to have moved round the city throughout the gruesome one hour attack including passing police check points. Manmohan Singh, India’s prime minister, vowed in a televised speech that the attackers of the 23-year-old would face swift justice, but that has not deterred the protests that have now entered its second week. Protests continue Several thousand riot police were again on duty on Thursday to prevent a group of around 500 people, mostly women, from marching on the presidential palace. Previuos protests had led to the death of one policeman. "We want justice," the protesters chanted, with some demanding the sacking of the Delhi police chief for authorising the use of teargas and water cannon at previous protests. Son of India's president had to apologise after he described some of the protesters as "dented and painted" women [Reuters] Activists were stopped by police in riot gear armed with tear gas and water cannons to hold them back. "We will win back our freedom!" the protesters, mostly university students, shouted as they pushed against barricades on a road leading to the city's landmark monument. The country has been rocked by a wave of protests since the attack, including one in Delhi on Thursday when thousands, mainly girls and youth tried to march towards the main government building demanding end to violence against women. Meanwhile, President Pranab Mukherjee's son, Abhijit, who is also a lawmaker for the ruling Congress Party, landed himself in trouble for describing some of the protesters as "dented and painted" women - a phrase used by mechanics who mask rust on used cars with liberal coats of paint. Abhijit, who came in for widespread condemnation for his sexist remark, apologised saying "my intention was not to hurt anyone". Official figures show that 228,650 of the total 256,329 violent crimes recorded last year were against women, with the number of rapes in the capital rising 17 percent to 661 this year. source: aljazeera english

Mods, pls derailers here, do ur work. This is a family topic, not a political or tribal thread. |
Sagamite: How?The unit of a society is the family, and the functional state of a society refects the state of the family in that community. 4 major factors determines the personality of a child: heredity, interaction with physical and social environment, type of education he/she receive and parental upbringing(the most important) A child's personality will affect: how he relates to other people, how he deals with problems, how he organizes his thoughts and carries out tasks, and what interests and motivates him. Thus personality determines the eventual outcome of an individual in adult life |
jammyng: 1. “You’re useless” or “You’re a failure”
I wonder how all these helps train a child, or helps a child's psychology and development as some nairalanders would make us believe. That our parents said such and left no scars on us doesn't make it right and doesn't mean we should see abusive languages and curse as displinary mesures towards any child. Its clearly wrong. Besides how are we sure these words left no scars? how many of our mates(classmates in pry and sec sch)really attained their full potentials in life? dont u think those wrong parental upbringing could have contributed. Remember the tongue is powerful and the power of life and death lies in it. We keep saying whites dont know how to raise a child, yet they produce more successful adults and a better society. Maybe there's something we are not doing right and that warrants a deep soul searching. I'm sure majority of those who see nothing wrong in this will also encourage their children to tell lies on their behalf. pls, let all these acts end with our parent's generation. |
