My problem with Jim Ovia is that he is not prepping anyone for succession. If Zenith is to be a long term play for me then I am thinking ( what happens to Zenith and to my money if Jim the Dream suddenly has " Indian apple poisoning" ( like Abacha) grin grin With all the STIFF competition in the banking sector UBA or FBn would quickly capitalize on any weakness, I don't doubt profitability from Zenith but I don't see my money doubling like in PHB ( no N72 from Zenith while PHB could easily do N40).
pumping777:
I've heard this several times. How is everyone so sure that Zenith does not have a succession plan?? Do you think the man expect to live forever? He may exert a lot of influence but this is no longer a small company and it is public.

Succession planning as a company policy has been around for a few decades now. I don't see why Zenith Bank will be waiting for senior executives or managers to die before putting one in place. There must be Senior Managers or Executives that are being positioned to take over strategic positions.

I know this was seriously highlighted in 2006 but I don't expect that Management is to dumb not to have done anything about it.
Funny question and good answer.

I need to know if it has benfits

If you have the money you can go ahead. I have done it before and up till now I still have two.

Sell now. If you can. Profit takers will depress the price. Short term, I think Japaul is over-priced despite the expected future mega growth. The PE ratio is over 40 angry

The strategy of most people that bought during TS is to take profit and this already started.
A very good advice from Pumping 777. You better sale now before it's too late. From all indications, the price will crash very soon.

Hi Aylala,

In one of your write-ups, you stated that it's always better to buy shares through public offers then through  secondary market. Could you shed more light on this because I strongly disagree with you on this issue.

@jehoshaphat

thanks for the info man. made things clearer definitely

i do think though that if you can afford it buy the goose instead of the egg ie flourmills instead of bagco.
bagco contributes to flourmills' bottom line because they own 70% of bagco and therefore 70% of whatever profit bagco make until that situation changes.

i know flourmills may be a bit steep in terms of price but if one can i would think this would be a better option, not to say bagco in itself isn't a good buy
Bagco is a good buy but there will be oversubscription and money will be refunded back to many people.

Oreshade,

This is another good plan and I believe this will fetch you more money than the first one. Zenith bank will start selling shares to the public on 16th Dec. 2007. You can use # 389,000.00 to buy 10,000 units of shares for keep from Zenith IPO.

Then, invest #200,000.00 in mutual fund, you can go for ARM AGGRESSIVE GROWTH , FBN HERITAGE FUND, 1BTC ETHICAL FUND, UNION BANK TRUSTEES TRUST FUND. Just do your reseach on these Funds and choose one.

Keep the remaining #61,000.00 in your bank account. If you don't want to keep a lot of money out of the #650,000.00 in your account, you can use # 39,000.00 out of the # 61,000.00 left to buy 10,000 units of shares fron BAGCO PLC IPO and then keep the remaining #22,000.00 in your account. For BAGCO PLC, the offer will close on the 14th of this month.

Since you are a student, these two Coys will pay you as per long term investment and you will make a lot of money.

And always remember that every investment entails some elements of risk.

Peace.

Hello Oreshade,

Because you're a student, I will advice you to go for low-risk investment. You can put #400,000 in mutual fund, #200,000 to buy shares in one or two solid fundamental companies and keep the remaining #50,000 in your account.

I know a lot of  people will tell you to put virtually everything into stock business because of the high profits/returns you tend to gain within a very short time but always remember that the risk in stock business is a bit high and being a student you may not be able to withstand the risk because you may lose all at once.

Peace.

God bless all the people who have been providing excellent analysis and advice on this forum. Does anyone have any experience with the Bank PHB Diaspora account? I learnt that it is similar to the UBA NRN account which has the stock brokerage feature.
How is their service and is it comparable to the UBA NRN?

If you had a choice in both the UBA NRN and hte PHB Diaspora account, which would you select?

Thanks
I will definately go UBA NRN.

Mr. Risky:
I MUST TELL YOU my brother that Nigeria market is very deep.  The POs are being oversubscribed because information about the functions of the NSE is still very scanty to many, many people.  What I mean is this, MANY NIGERIANS think you can only buy shares when there are POs for sale.  I can tell you that no fewer than 20 of my colleagues are still complaining to me how they missed the First bank PO, and when I asked further I realized that many had thought that one can only buy first bank shares only when it is on 'SALE", i.e. PO.  And there are many, many people in that category.  The last one I spoke with was a lawyer, when I told her that you can buy and sell shares even within three months, she exclaimed.  She had only just been buying don't even know that the certificates are important documents.  She said she was told that shares are for long term, say 10 to 15 years!  And after such a long time you can go to the bank and tell them "I have bought your shares, please check your register and they will give you the money back'.  Omaseoooooooooooooooooo

@ All,

I smell some dirty deals in Oceanic.

People claim they have received their certificates while others claim they have not.

The shares from the offer have not been listed on the exchange so if we even send them for verification, what are we going to sell on the floor of the NSE.

Oceanic had better list those shares on the exchange now so people can start selling as soon as they are verified and cashing in,

or are they managing their share price?

Haha actually no, took me about 3mths before I settled on them for folks entering like me that didnt have N1mil or N5mil minimum, plus it also allowed me to have a bank acct. Where are u located, Temitope the US NRN rep is absolutely wonderful, he never gets tired of my constant emails, or my cancellation orders that come a min after sending a buy order grin
I also sent mine by DHL to Marina c/o Temitope, took 3 business days from US, and my current/checking acct was opened the next day and CSCS a few days later.
Usually when I issue a buy order, if the stock is readily available, they'll get it by the next business day, and then the rep will email me invoice the following day. I usually send my buy orders at 8am Nigerian time, so that its the first thing he sees, but lately I've been doing it at 2pm Nigerian time so I can see the update from the NSE for that day. The stock brokerage section of UBA stops taking orders at 4pm every day
Do u have a bank acct? if not then UBA is awesome, cause u get to have that, plus when u send money, u are sending it to your bank acct.
I'm sure by early 2008, their online portal will be available, plus all the other perks such as the Mortgage Loan option is extremely good ($40k-$350k and up to $500k for CEOs of big companies).

Also with NRN know that even though N100k is needed to open the current acct in addition to the N250k for capital market acct, u only need N5k to keep current acct open. That wasnt made clear to me initially but once I found out, I pretty much transferred all the money in my current acct to my capital market acct grin as I am not planning on being in Naija in the next few mths, so no point having it chilling there for now.
@ Teenom,

Go ahead and open the account and you will not regret doing so.

@Ben0524

You can start with another stockbroker at anytime and transfer your stocks at a later date.

Not sure what forms you need to transfer your stocks to the control of your new broker - assuming your stocks are under CSCS.
If your shares are in certificates nothing need concern your abandoned brokers.
I hear that the brokers are a bit more cooperative nowadays due to better regulation.
Make sure you study your new broker very carefully before moving your account so as not to move from the fryingpan into the fire!

If you did not enter your CSCS number on your application form all it means is that you will have to wait for your share certificate which will then have to be verified before it can be de-materialised to CSCS. A long process.

Hope of some help.

Samstone4 cool cool
@ Ben0524,

Samstone48 has already answered your questions but I just want to tell you that you can go to the office of the
registrar to Dangote Flour mill and give them your CSCS number or better still write a letter to them as per your CSCS number(attach photocopy of your form) and they will add the number to your form. With this, your shares will be credited to your CSCS account direct. I think ZENITH REGISTRARS LTD is the registrar for Dangote Flour Mill.

Oceanic Bank - Buy or Sell at the Current Price?

Posted Thursday, November 29, 2007

On November 28, 2007, the shares of Oceanic Bank Plc closed at N28.99K, a closing price that is below the stock’s 10 day, 20 day, and 50 day CSMAs' of N30.38k, N29.06k, and N29.51k respectively.

Since August 1, 2007, the stock has traded in a very tight trading range (between N26.71k and N33.46k) yielding a modest volatility of 25.3%.

Although, the stock appears to be selling off (i.e., 9% decline) in the most recent six (6) trading days, the 10 day, 20 day, and 50 day CSMA are still trending up which indicates a price pattern that does not reflect long-term weakness.

However, the stock is exhibiting a short-term weakness as it is currently trading below its 10 day CSMA. Additionally, the 20 day CSMA is currently acting as support for the stock, if the stock breaks through this support; it is likely to test the N26 level, a major support area. A perfect situation will be for the 20 day CSMA to be above the 50 day CSMA which will indicate a stock with very strong relative strength. (See graph)

I understand that Oceanic Bank will be reporting their earnings shortly. The stock's trading pattern in the recent sell off is troubling, because of the increased volume. For example, the stock traded 28 million shares yesterday (November 28, 2007), which is approximately 100% greater than the normal daily trading volume of about N14 million. This is an indication that the major institutional investors are not confident that the anticipated earnings will beat capital market expectations. Therefore, it is probably a case of sell on the rumor, and possibly buy later after the news is out.

My advice to investors is to watch the stock, and buy if the stock stabilizes about the next major support level (N25 .00k - N26.00k), representing a 21% pull back from its most recent high. Additionally, ascertain that the 3 days Pivot are positive before taking a position.

Additionally, based on the most recent high and most retracement of N26.71, investors should watch for the following retracement prices. There is no guarantee that the stock will violate these prices, but I will be comfortable accumulating the shares, if any of these prices are breached:
Projected Fibonnaci Target Retracement Price
First Target - 23.7% 25.07
Second target - 38.2% 23.45
Third Target - 50% 21.43
Fourth Target - 61.8% 18.17

Peace.

The price maybe appreciating but that should not be a good reason for you to buy it.

You should always have one thing in mind whenever you want to buy stock and that is, who will buy it from me if I want to sell. Good luck.
