Politics › Re: How Rich Is Nigeria? by toshmann(m): 12:06am On Jun 26, 2006
guy,
the world bank ranks nigeria as a low income country. low income countries are the poorest countries of the world. the parameter used by the worldbank is the GNI per capita a.k.a. the per capita income, which is what u were trying to calculate for nigeria bearing in mind our income or GDP and more importantly our population.

the low income countries are those countries with GNI per capita of $825 or less. most of these countries are in sub saharan africa. but when u see countries like south africa and angola are in middle income countries u begin to wonder the meaning of giant of africa we hear about our country all the time

check this:

Politics › Re: Nigerian Flag: Green, White, Green = Islamic Nation by toshmann(m): 11:46pm On Jun 25, 2006
we cannot just say that the green colors are for islam. there is no statement from the website that the religion adopted green as a color. even if they did, there is no law that states that only islam should have green as a color. so our green is for agriculture, and our white for peace(do we really have peace in that country? and what of agriculture?) anyway the color aint for religion

BTW there are islamic countires which don't have the green color in thier flag.

Ghana can as well pack their bags and jet to Accra.
A walk-over result will be much better than Brazil thumping 'em 6-0.
I forsee lotta fouls that will lead to yellow/red cards for Essien and Appiah.
Brazil will let Ghana play but trust Robinho-Ronaldo and Ronaldinho to crack the Ghananian's defence with ease.
My Verdict: Brazil 5-0 Ghana.
are u all right brother? angry what do u mean by this? who thought Ghana will beat czech republic? with nedved and peter czech? look, Ghana will shock the world shocked. believe me. what has ronaldinho done in this world cup? what has brazil played? they have yet to impress me. they beat japan.so?australia.so? let them beat crack teams let us see. crack traditional soccer teams like italy germany etc. these are teams that ,though they may not be good, they'll always be at thier best when they plat brazil.

prediction: Ghana 2:0 Brazil

Brazil will be lucky to get extra time defeat.

we shall see

last year i told a friend of mine here in cardiff that the money alami was caught with in london can be used to buy a new set of buses for lagos and have all those molues thrown away replacing them with fresh buses of european standards. the thing is most of us don't know what we loose when money is invested in bullshit.

the money invested in 3rd term can be used to convert one of those our rickety universities into something close to european standards, or upgrade some hspital somewhere into a life saving edifice.

let us invest in power supply, our economy will boost effortlessly.

Nigeria '99: A National joke + disgrace. BADLY ORGANIZED. CORRUPTION MAGNET.

Nigeria '03: Wrong people in charge, and lots of stealing.

But that was the past.
what do u min by past (and present)? u think nigeria has changed much? let me remind u of some past stories. as a child i read in school about one ali must go riots. today the same ali is PDP chairman.

i read about obasanjo in history books. we know where he is today
i was a child when we used to hear of mamser/ibb/jerry gana etc. today these guys want to contest for president.

the same people, same old wine in new wine skins. that is why the use almost the same style, look for something the country doesn't need but from which profitable contracts can be won. the same style, the same people.

we are yet to change. abeg let us host health for all by 2007, free election and sound democracy 2007, good govt 2007,these are better things to host. if we are serious.
Sports › Re: Abuja 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid by toshmann(m): 8:59pm On Jun 20, 2006
@zexyworm and bibi,

where did nigeria 99 land us? what did we achieve. even the sports facilities upgraded then, where and how are they now? abeg!!!!!

what of the african games of 2003? did u hear of all the scandal and corruption that went with it. these people(govt) just think of avenue to chop money. if we want to invest, let us invest in education, in health, in power supply, in water supply,in agriculture etc. leave all this hosting bullshit. commonwealth my foot. for ur information, the UK is more interested in investing in the EU now than it's former colonies,

and until we put our country in order, the west will never respect us and the western press will never give us good publicity. if we like let us host olympics and world cup.it wont change their perception of nigeria.

Health › Re: Diarrhoea And Teething In Children: What Is The Truth by toshmann(op): 10:25pm On Jun 18, 2006
thanx genial,

i know there are other causes of diarrhoea in infants but there is this belief in certain quarters that diarrhoea in infants is due to teething.now this has generated a public health problem because if people believe that diarrhoea in infants is a normal event during teething they wont consider it a serious problem that deserves medical attention and as such the ailment worsens until the life of the child is threatened by which time the prognosis is very poor with subsequent high mortality.

i just wanted to sample opinion of the people concerning this belief about teething and diarrhoea especially these days that it has been shown that a lot of health workers believe in the association between diarrhoea and teething.
Health › Diarrhoea And Teething In Children: What Is The Truth by toshmann(op): 11:40am On Jun 18, 2006
ladies and gentlemen,

for long, there has been a running battle in the field of medical knowledge as to the real cause of diarrhoea in infants. health professionals believe that it is due in large part to poor sanitation/hygiene while the local population believe it has to do with teething in infants.

because of this belief, parents don't bring their young ones to hospital in time until it gets really serious and life threatening. but the most worryint thing now is that even health professionals(many nurses and some doctors) do believe that diarrhoea is due to teething in infants. studies have shown no strong relationship btw teething and diarrhoea but this belief remains.

what are your thoughts? express them freely. and if possible indicate if u are a parent, health worker(Dr,nurse, pharmacist, dentist,, etc) student etc.
thank you

Politics › Re: Democracy Without Literacy by toshmann(m): 11:39pm On Jun 17, 2006
drusilla when last did u stay in nigeria? u need to understand that nigeria and the US aint the same. the middle class in nigeria is arguably the civil servant/public servant class and its equivalent. they are usually educated. they are relatively civilised. in the 70s and early 80s the university graduate automatically joins the middle class. but now they have no hope ,any class they find themselves they adapt.

that is arguably the middle class in nigeria. it is threatened. it is vanishing.

Politics › Re: Democracy Without Literacy by toshmann(m): 11:07pm On Jun 17, 2006
u guys talk as if u have not been in the country for a while. in nigeria the middle class is an endangered species. they have no hope and the rich do not like them. the lower class is used by the rich for selfish purposes(such as election rigging) and get payed well by the rich such that they now have more money than the "middle class" and so the "middle class" looses respect. that is why seun can call them "overfed technocrats who would never dream of starting a business".

to be honest, if we can use the energy we are using to protest the bad publicity to invest in developing our country it would have been a better nation. if our country is good, the western press wont have much to say about us negatively. so let's make the nation good. press image is not our most burning issue now.

that is why a governor can spend 5 million naira to advertise a 2 million naira road he has not yet built. in search of good publicity. if things are great in a nation they wont need any press to announce it and even if any press comes to give a great nation bad publicity, the truth will stand against such press.

so let us concentrate on keeping our leaders responsible enought o develop the nation and dont invest so mush energy on the western press

and what do we do with the "rubbish" they throw on us? we pick it up and throw on ourselves aint it? the west definitely played a role in africa's woes but my greatest annoyance comes from what we are doing to ourselves. why all our leaders have foreign accounts, foreign houses, foreign this and that. how many of our leaders children are in nigerian schools, how many of our leaders go to our own hospitals , even for a headache?

these leaders are our worst enemies.

what are the inclusion criteria in all these lists. what and what are we using to judge who is great and who isn't or we just list those we like.
