PoliticsRe: Enough Of Northern Bashing From Southners by tpia: 3:50pm On Aug 18, 2008
Northern bashing by south, southern bashing by north- its this bashing of regions by other regions, that people focus on instead of finding ways to improve their lives.

Dont know why Africans find it so hard to look beyond their ingrained prejudices. Or at least learn how to get along and use your excess misplaced energy for progress instead of regress.

sheesh.

Interestin topic!

When I was to do my Internship, I wanted to work at a Teaching Hopital because I wanted to be in the academic environment so I can practice and learn more. there were very few slots at the teaching hospitals. I waited almost a year before giving in to the volunteer job they call 'supernumerary' at a Teaching hospital because I could not bear the thot of not doing the Internship within the 2 year limit. Supernumerary simply means you don't get paid but don't get treated differently from someone who gets paid. That is how I completed my internship. I only supported myself with private practice that I did when i was not on call and some family support that I had to solicit for.

Someone tell me how wrong I am for feeling this way.

cry
You're very right for feeling this way, just as my friend overseas who did his own supernumerary without pay for a year, in order to get into a residency program, was also right to feel bitter some of the time. He supported himself meanwhile by doing various odd jobs including security and burger flipping. Many Indian doctors also do the same (ie work without pay in order to get their foot in the door)

Its a question of location. Which location is better to do it in.

Dog eat Dog undecided undecided undecided
Your African bashing is starting to get out of control.

Here are other countries where dog meat has been consumed. Kindly bash them as well.

Arctic and Antarctic
Dogs have historically been an emergency food source for various peoples in Siberia, Alaska, northern Canada, and Greenland. Sled dogs are usually maintained for pulling sleds, but occasionally are eaten when no other food is available.

Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen famously ate sled dogs during his expedition to the South Pole to survive. By eating some of the sled dogs he was able to transport less dog food, thus lightening his load.

Canada
Consumption of dog meat is taboo in mainstream Canadian culture. However it may be practised by some cultural minorities. In 2003, health inspectors discovered four frozen canine carcasses in the freezer of a Chinese restaurant in Edmonton.[12] Subsequently, the Edmonton health inspector said that it is not illegal to sell and eat the meat of dogs and other canines, as long as the meat has been inspected.[13] In the end, these four particular canine carcasses were found to be coyotes. Ed Greenburg, an official with Edmonton's Capital Health Region, said the fact that the animals were coyotes doesn't change anything and inspectors are still looking into the possibility that uninspected meat was served at the restaurant. Under Canada's Wildlife Act, it is illegal to sell meat from any wild species. There is no law against selling and serving canine meat, including dogs, but it must be killed and gutted in front of federal inspectors

China

Dog meat has been a source of food in parts of China from at least the time of Confucius, and possibly even before. Ancient writings from the Zhou Dynasty referred to the "three beasts"(which were bred for food), including pig, goat, and dog. Mencius, the philosopher, recommended dog as the tastiest of all meats. Dog meat is sometimes euphemistically called "fragrant meat"  or "mutton of the earth"  in Mandarin Chinese and "3-6 fragrant meat" in Cantonese.

France
In France, dogs were widely eaten during famines

Germany
Dog meat has been eaten in every major German crisis at least since the time of Frederick the Great, and is commonly referred to as "blockade mutton." In the early 20th century, consumption of dog meat in Germany was common. In 1937, trichina inspection was introduced for pigs, dogs, boars, foxes, badgers, and other carnivores.Since 1986 dog meat is prohibited in Germany.

Controversy
Use of dogs for meat and the methods of slaughter used have generated friction between dog lovers, both Western and Korean, and people who eat dogs; the conflict occasionally breaks out as headline news. During the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul, Korea's capital city, the South Korean government asked its citizens not to consume dog meat to avoid bad publicity during the games. The controversy surfaced again in 2001 during the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Today in Korea, a segment of the population enjoy bosintang (literally "invigorating soup"wink, believing it to have medicinal properties, particularly as relates to virility. Dog meat is also believed to keep one cool during the intense Korean summer.

Switzerland
According to the November 21, 1996, edition of the Rheintaler Bote, a Swiss newspaper covering the Rhine Valley area, the rural Swiss cantons of Appenzell and St. Gallen are known to have had a tradition of eating dogs, curing dog meat into jerky and sausages, as well as using the lard for medicinal purposes. Dog sausage and smoked dog jerky remains a staple in the Swiss cantons of St. Gallen and Appenzell, where one farmer was quoted in a regional weekly newspaper as saying that "meat from dogs is the healthiest of all. It has shorter fibres than cow meat, has no hormones like veal, no antibiotics like pork."

wiki
You can make your point about eating dogs without descending to a personal level.

No need to start displaying your prejudices and low self esteem in the name of feeling superior.

Pictures don't lie, I see your inequality of thought process. If SA presented good and actual pictures of their country- its called propaganda, Nigerians can always live in squalor and hope that  no professional photographer will see  it. If I may ask is Nigeria allergic to professional photographers?  I don't know why people like you , in spite of your western influence think that being Nigerian is accepting the lowest common denominator of life.  We can do better.  Why is it  whining when folks like  you think that SA was and is built by white folks. As a matter of fact that black folks do not deserve any  praise for accelerating and spreading the economic potentials of that country. I'm not whining when folks like you  insist that  white folks were and are responsible for  anything positive in SA even when you have not acknowledged that  our economic mainstay-oil  is being drilled  by white folks. This is double standard, not whining. Get it ok.  Enough of this hawkish nationalism.
its very tiresome always having to educate some smartasses on this board.

So just because you're seeing some propaganda photos on this thread, that means there are no professionally taken pictures of Nigeria?

Yet when people do take high quality pictures of the country, folks like you will still come and whine about how they prefer to see pictures of Nigerian slums.

South Africa was built by and for white folks. Nigeria was built by and for Nigerians. Some of the construction is done by foreign companies for buildings that will be used majorly by Nigerians. last time I checked, Nigerians were mostly black. If you know better, then keep displaying your so called knowledge.

If you hire and pay a white contractor to build your house in Nigeria, , is that the same thing as a white man buying, constructing, owning the house and passing it on to his descendants. Think before you type.

A lot of foreign companies are in Saudi doing construction jobs. They are doing it for the pay, not because they want to settle permanently in Saudi.

Once again, if the oil is being drilled by white folks, so what? If white folks did not discover a use for the oil, would you be here complaining about it? Blind nationalism is what you are guilty of, since you refuse to face reality thanks to your delusional worldview. Instead of griping and whining about whites drilling the oil, why not try to find ways to use your own common sense creatively and in ways that will profit you personally., unlike what you're doing here.

It is definitely true that blacks appear to be less educated and not as driven or ambitious as white people. Whether this is to do with the lack of good solid education or more genetically based I am not sure.

It also goes without saying that blacks normally destroy what they are given and treat things with disrespect. If you look at all the filth and squalor in Lagos, you will see that the average Nigerian has very little respect for where they live or their fellow human beings.

Your quote about sending Nigerians to the UK and UK citizens to Nigeria is so true, Nigerians would destroy Britain in no time for sure. You only have to look at the East End of London where the Black African communities live, they are filthy and crime ridden.
Thor, just because people are found in a ghetto doesnt mean they invented the ghetto.

If you can reveal where you're from, I'm sure a little investigation will uncover the slum areas there.

Try to read the following:

East End

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_End#Today

The East End came into being as the separate villages east of London spread and the fields between them were built upon, a process that occurred in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. From the beginning, the East End has always contained some of the poorest areas of London.

William Booth began his 'Christian Revival Society' in 1865, preaching the gospel in a tent erected in the 'Friends Burial Ground', Thomas Street, Whitechapel. Others joined his 'Christian Mission', and on August 7, 1878 the Salvation Army was formed at a meeting held at 272 Whitechapel Road. A statue commemorates both his mission and his work in helping the poor. A Dubliner, Thomas John Barnardo came to the London Hospital, Whitechapel to train for medical missionary work in China. Soon after his arrival in 1866, a cholera epidemic swept the East End, killing 3,000 people. Many families were left destitute, with thousands of children orphaned and forced to beg or find work in the factories.
In 1884, the Settlement movement was founded, with settlements such as Toynbee Hall and Oxford House, to encourage university students to live and work in the slums, experience the conditions and try to alleviate some of the poverty and misery in the East End.

During the 19th century, building on an adhoc basis could never keep up with the needs of the expanding population. Henry Mayhew visited Bethnal Green in 1850 and wrote for the Morning Chronicle, as a part of a series forming the basis for London Labour and the London Poor (1851), that the trades in the area included tailors, costermongers, shoemakers, dustmen, sawyers, carpenters, cabinet makers and silkweavers. He noted that in the area:

roads were unmade, often mere alleys, houses small and without foundations, subdivided and often around unpaved courts. An almost total lack of drainage and sewerage was made worse by the ponds formed by the excavation of brickearth. Pigs and cows in back yards, noxious trades like boiling tripe, melting tallow, or preparing cat's meat, and slaughter houses, dustheaps, and 'lakes of putrefying night soil' added to the filth
—Henry Mayhew London Labour and London Poor (1851)[

"Hardest of all, the Luftwaffe will smash Stepney. I know the East End! Those dirty Jews and Cockneys will run like rabbits into their holes. ”
—Germany Calling - Lord Haw-Haw, collaborator and broadcaster

Throughout history, the area has absorbed waves of immigrants who have each added a new dimension to the culture and history of the area, most notably the French Protestant Huguenots in the 17th century, the Irish in the 18th century, Ashkenazi Jews fleeing pogroms in Eastern Europe towards the end of the 19th century, and the Bangladeshi community settling in the East End from the 1960s.

In 1786, the Committee for the Relief of the Black Poor was formed, by citizens concerned at the size of London's indigent Black population, many of whom had been expelled from North America as Black Loyalists, former slaves who had fought on the side of the British, in the War of Independence. Others were discharged sailors, and some a legacy of British involvement in the slave trade.

The high levels of poverty in the East End have, throughout history, resulted in a corresponding incidence of crime.

Historically, the East End has suffered from under-investment in both housing stock and infrastructure. From the 1950s, the East End represented the structural and social changes affecting the UK economy in a microcosm. The area had one of the highest concentrations of council housing, the legacy both of slum clearance and war time destruction.

abeg Axis and Deepzone- you guys were discussing intelligently on this thread until tribal sentiment was brought in.

At that point, the no holds barred slugfest began. Up till then, I was having an interesting discussion on the Fulani and Yorubas in kwara.

See as una dey yab each other's tribe as if say na Alamo una dey.

This is what I hate about tribalism. Every so often you hear the "nationalists" repeating the same old tired charges about each other.

Axis why not take it easy. Maybe you're new here- try to browse the tribalism section so you can get some idea of the raw tribal sentiment so common to Nigerians and Africans. Which tribe are you, by the way, if you don't mind my asking. You tend to discuss like a Yoruba but you say you're not one.

What makes other doctors substandard? Cuban doctors are very well trained, as are many others. Indian and Chinese doctors are also very good. They also make up an extremely high percentage of the medical practitioners abroad. Especially Indians.

So far people have voiced their various opinions on doctors' welfare. And as with most other sectors in Nigeria, the doctors go on strike every so often, for salary increases. After their own, nurses will also agitate and go on strike for better pay. The only people in that group who don't seem to down tools so often, are the pharmacists.

However, doctors abroad who work long hours for minimal wages, arent allowed to go on strike. Its one of the first differences I noticed between employment at home and employment abroad. Overseas, if your paycheck doesnt cover your bills, you either get another job or cut down your expenses as much as possible.

what's substandard with the pictures you're complaining about?

My opinion was some Yoruba people around that side consider the Fulanis inferior. It could be a mutual or religious thing, since Yorubas did not wholly embrace Islam the same way the north did.

besides, the Fulanis had to trick the Oyos in order to get a foothold in Yoruba territory (ie Kwara). They didnt have too much military success in the forest regions prior to that.
