Religion / The Greatness Of Our God-(midweek Meditation) by traeces(m): 8:29am On Jan 10, 2018
This morning as I meditated upon the greatness of our God, my heart wondered to a sentence in Genesis 1:16, “…He made the stars also” and I wondered how the bible can summarize something so unfathomably profound and so infinitely vast into one small sentence of 5 letters.

Let’s gain perspective, our earth which is the only known habitable planet is home to over 7 billion people scattered across 195 countries. The earth surface is about 70% water and life form is sustained upon the earth by energy from the sun.

The sun is a star and it is in fact an average sized star. That is to say there are plenty other stars that are many times bigger than the sun. This average sized star which is our sun however is so big it can contain 1,300,000 earths. That is to say the sun is a whooping 1,300,000 times bigger than the earth.

A galaxy is a collection of star systems and there are more than 100 billion galaxies in the observable universe. Now underline the word observable universe as science can only observe objects that are a certain distance from the earth because in the 13.8 billion years since the universe came into being, light from farther objects have not had time to reach us. Our galaxy which is named the Milky Way galaxy contains 300 billion stars. Astronomers put current estimates of the total star population at roughly 70 billion trillion (7 x 10^22). That is 1 trillion stars for every single person living upon the earth were the stars to be shared among the 7 billion people on earth.

Yet the word of God sums all these up in that one sentence; “…He made the stars also” This calls my heart to worship in the humble realization that;
1. God is not my mate in spite of the infinity of how much he cares for me.
2. God is not infinite, I think he is infinity-You can’t describe him, you can’t explain him, you can’t understand him and you definitely can’t measure him.
3. If he made the stars also, there is truly nothing he cannot do
4. If the story of all the stars can be told in five words, then John was truly right when he asserted under the inspiration of the Holy Ghost that, "Jesus did many other things as well. If every one of them were written down, I suppose that even the whole world would not have room for the books that would be written."( John 21:25) NIV
5. The Psalmist actually had a point when he declared by inspiration of the Holy Ghost that “When I consider thy heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?” (Ps 8:3-4) KJV

My dear, this animal life of being born, eating, sleeping, marrying, giving birth to children and dying is a cycle that God does not value the same way you do.
He let his son Jesus die remember? Paul said, "for to me, to die is GAIN". If you are so afraid of dying, it is either because you have not made peace with your maker or you have no idea what God has prepared for those who love him.

Don't you love yourself? Why do you force yourself to or at least feel the need to work out?

God is a due process God, there are orders he has ordained which he does not break and the devil knows it. So the devil has a right in been here at least for now and God will not cheat him out of that right because he is omnipotent.

I am no atheist.
I know God exists but I am confused as to the extent of his roles in our lives.

At times, I wonder if he truly cares.

I wonder why he allows accidents when he can stop it since he is omnipotent.

I wonder why he allows people to be massacred in his churches why worshipping him.

I wonder why it appears Christians are worse off than unbelievers.

I could cite 1 million instances.

I just wonder, maybe God afterall doesn't bother about us. Maybe he wants to help us but CANNOT.

Or If actually he CAN yet unwilling, isn't he malevolent?

I just wonder , confused and dispirited.

You have made very important points that I cannot ignore. I will respond in line with two scriptures;

Psalm 115:16
The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s: but the earth hath he given to the children of men.

ROM 8:19-24
For the creation waits in eager expectation for the children of God to be revealed. For the creation was subjected to frustration, not by its own choice, but by the will of the one who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be liberated from its bondage to decay and brought into the freedom and glory of the children of God.
We know that the whole creation has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time.
Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption to sonship, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. But hope that is seen is no hope at all. Who hopes for what they already have?

In the light of these scriptures, note:
1) God who created both the heavens and the earth gave the earth to man who in turn gave it to the devil when he fell in the garden

2) The devil thereafter became an important player in what happens in the earth through the instrumentality of man.

3)Even creation was not spared the pains of the bondage of decay.

4) There is the hope that both we and creation will be liberated when the sons of God are revealed

5) Even now, God gives his own victories through all the tribulations and difficulties we face.

what condemnation are u talking about? Where did I talk about condemnation? What has belief in God got to do with what I said? what makes my supposed assertion unscriptural and the yardstick for such measurements? And how does what u just said apply to my submissions?

According to your submission, "The sin of the rich man wasn't that he didn't love Lazarus but was that "He Was INSENSITIVE to the plight of the beggar ". " but I am saying the sin of that rich man and indeed every unbeliever is the sin of unbelief. To back up my position, I quoted John 3:18 which says,

"He who believes in Him [who clings to, trusts in, relies on Him] is not judged [he who trusts in Him never comes up for judgment; for him there is no rejection, no condemnation--he incurs no damnation]; but he who does not believe (cleave to, rely on, trust in Him) is judged already [he has already been convicted and has already received his sentence] because he has not believed in and trusted in the name of the only begotten Son of God. [He is condemned for refusing to let his trust rest in Christ's name.]" Amp

Apina:

Your sermon though wonderful doesn't really tell what the sin of the rich man was smiley. Most persons have argued that he didn't love Lazarus, but I don't believe that was the case, cos he allowed him stay at his gate and eat from his table even though they were leftovers.

For The rich man to have been able to identify Lazarus at the other side simply points to the fact that he knows who Lazarus is, most probably while moving in and out of his mansion could have asked about him when he saw him sitting at his gate. The Bible said he lived in luxury while Lazarus begged and had sores all over, did he ever refuse to help Lazarus? I don't think so cos if that were to be the case, Lazarus would most likely not remain at his gate cos Lazarus would need to eat to survive and would have moved on to another place where he would get food but he remained and even died there. We can actually say the rich man was generous to the beggar cos he allowed him to lay his head within his property and allowed him to feed from his table, eating the same food he ate.

The sin of the rich man wasn't that he didn't love Lazarus but was that "He Was INSENSITIVE to the plight of the beggar". The sin of insensitivity is so faint that it's almost impossible to detect, and it's everywhere, in the church, on your streets and even in the family.

Your assertion is great but I am convinced you missed an important point as your assertion is not rooted enough in scripture.

Condemnation which lands people in hell is first and foremost due to the sin of unbelief. John 3:18 What you do or do not do is immaterial as long as faith in God is not in place. You can give your body to be burnt for the poor if you want but unless you first believe that God is and a rewarder of those who diligently seek him, you cannot please God. This thought is evident in verses 28-30 of the Luke scripture OP posted.

God calls everyone to put their faith in Christ Jesus and come to him in repentance.

Happy New Year to every one. The discussion today is the story of the rich man and Lazarus, let us read the Bible verse before the discussion. Luke 16:19-31New International Version (NIV)
The Rich Man and Lazarus
19 “There was a rich man who was dressed in purple and fine linen and lived in luxury every day. 20 At his gate was laid a beggar named Lazarus, covered with sores 21 and longing to eat what fell from the rich man’s table. Even the dogs came and licked his sores.
22 “The time came when the beggar died and the angels carried him to Abraham’s side. The rich man also died and was buried. 23 In Hades, where he was in torment, he looked up and saw Abraham far away, with Lazarus by his side. 24 So he called to him, ‘Father Abraham, have pity on me and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, because I am in agony in this fire.’
25 “But Abraham replied, ‘Son, remember that in your lifetime you received your good things, while Lazarus received bad things, but now he is comforted here and you are in agony. 26 And besides all this, between us and you a great chasm has been set in place, so that those who want to go from here to you cannot, nor can anyone cross over from there to us.’
27 “He answered, ‘Then I beg you, father, send Lazarus to my family, 28 for I have five brothers. Let him warn them, so that they will not also come to this place of torment.’
29 “Abraham replied, ‘They have Moses and the Prophets; let them listen to them.’
30 “‘No, father Abraham,’ he said, ‘but if someone from the dead goes to them, they will repent.’
31 “He said to him, ‘If they do not listen to Moses and the Prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone rises from the dead.’”

Look at verse 28-30 and it will be clear that;
1) The rich man was not remotely confused as per what his sin was.
2) He knew he did not repent and knew also that if his brothers do not repent, they will join him in hell.
3) God requirement for all who will escape that fate is one and the same: Faith in the lord Jesus.

lol, you don't know how illogical you sound with pulling Pascal's wager

You should probably either review Pascal's wager or my view as there is nothing similar in the 2. I am not guessing the reality of God neither am I partially certain that Jesus is the way to God. My theology is not just so that I don't lose out in eternity should I hold that there is no God and get to eternity only to find that there actually is God. I am FULLY PERSUADED that God is and is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him.

I am pretty sure that you are not half as intellectually dexterous or scientifically literate as Pascal was but he knew enough to know that science does not and cannot answer the God question so he posed his wager which should actually makes sense.

On a final note, God is a spirit and because science only measures what can be seen, heard or sensed physically, science CANNOT measure, prove or disprove the existence of God. You can only believe or disbelieve! Note however that not even God seeks to rob you of your right to choose what you want and note also that whatever choice you make in this matter is an important determinant of the eternal destiny of your soul.

The staunchest atheist won't spend 1 day in hell before realizing the utter foolishness of his acclaimed intellectual dexterity. My only prayer for you is that you discover your foolishness long before you face your maker in eternity in Jesus name, amen

Mariinee:
The Prophet Mohammed (PBUH) was a messenger of God not God himself, how do you expect him to know everything? LOL. He wasn't a seer either.

Now, Jesus didn't die on the cross. His soul rose up into the high heavens. Why is crime and everything still rife in the world if Jesus indeed died for the sins of men.
Jesus died for the sins of men, yet this century is the most morally-corrupted one ever. Are people like this because they know Jesus died for their sins and once they accept him as their Lord and savior, they are okay? Is this why a lot of people go to church but still engage in the most vile of activities?

Jesus was persecuted because he preached the gospel to people not because he was sent down to die for the sins of some useless people he doesn't know. If God wanted to forgive us all, he only has to say it. He doesn't have to murder anyone, okay? He isn't a god of drama.

My dear mariinee, the simple fact that the prophet did not know what was going to become of the eternal destiny of his spirit or of his followers is one of the many reasons why he cannot command my following.

Secondly, the death and resurrection of Jesus was not meant to take away man's freedom to choose. It was meant to make it possible for man to return to God his home following the fall which is why the bible says, "For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever BELIEVES in him will not perish but have everlasting life" Jn 3:16

What that means is, if in spite of his death, one chooses not to believe, heavens will not fall but he or she misses out on the eternal life God made possible through Jesus and perishes in hell which has always been the intent of Satan.

I didn't "deny" its existence, I know he doesn't exist! the word "deny" sounds like I have all the evidence I need but chose to ignore them or something

I don't accept any creation story, its obvious each and every one of them are manmade and used to predict what happened before they got here, like someone sleeping in the USA tonight and waking up in a Canadian hotel can spill a lot of theories about how he got there from "train brought me here" to "I must've taken a plane" to "I teleported down here"

we are all trying to find our way in this world we find ourselves and conjuring "god" as explanation just seems too intellectually lazy a position to take; To believe in a God is to relinquish your ability to seek the truth... To simply give up on the answers to the impossible questions... To stop using the most important of Human faculties, the ability to question... All questions about the universe, pain, suffering, evil, morality etc...God did it.....now get back to work and pay your tithe because he needs money...
I find it very funny when I encounter free thinkers who bandy the assertion that faith in God amounts to intellectual laziness. Where has your intellectual dexterity led you?
Think about it, even in the physical world, Newtonian mechanic laws are very valid for as long as speeds are not approaching the speeds of light and masses not approaching subatomic orders. Newton's erstwhile valid laws do not hold in those realms! How then can you hope to explain God who is spirit and require those who worship him to worship in truth and in spirit with your eyes, hands, ears, mouth?
For the sake of the eternal destiny of your spirit, I advice you to repent before God and beg him to give you faith to believe that he is and he is a rewarder of those who diligently seek him (Heb 11:6)
Faith that he exists comes before evidence of hia existence

everything else you wrote there aren't historical, that's using bible to confirm the bible aka "circular reasoning" fallacy and everything becomes true due to such a fallacious thinking

The bible was written on 3 different continents by 40+ others under divine inspiration of the Holy Ghost over a period of over 1500 years. That puts the bible in a class all its own as it is a book of books. It is one of histories most reliable reference material so if you think I should not use the bible to explain the bible, what will you suggest? archeology, science or metaphysics?

Eight "eye-witnesses" say they saw and handled the golden plates that Joseph Smith translated into the Book of Mormon. That history is far more recent than Jesus' four witnesses who (supposedly) wrote it decades after the fact and you also know nothing about them, so using your logic the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints wins on eye-witness numbers and proximity of time. I guess you'll convert to Mormonism now?

Calendar year? hahahaha

Smith actually obtained testimonies from 11 men who said they had seen the golden plates not 8 as you quoted above. But I ask, how does that in the least compare with the lord Jesus whom God began to speak about right from Genesis 3:15 many 1000s of years before he was born and all through the ages by the mouth of prophets of all ages who received inspiration to prophecy what they did not fully grasp at the time?

Notice also that just before Jesus came, John had been testifying about him without knowing his identity until he saw the sign. Don't forget, John's had encountered an angel before John's birth so much so that even the people of his day could not take his testimony for granted.

Once Jesus arrived, he began to declare that he is the son of God but many including his brothers did not believe him until his death when even a soldier standing declared that "truly, this was the son of God" when he saw all the signs that followed his death.

Finally, when he resurrected, he revealed himself to Peter, the twelve, and to more than 500 brothers at the same time most of whom were still living at the time. If you can believe that you are your father's child on the testimony of your mother but can't believing the fact of Jesus resurrection in the face of all the historical evidences, then I clearly can't help you.

Neither you or me were born 2000 years ago so we must make do with the testimony of those who were and saw him. His disciples notable amongst whom was Thomas, Acts 1:2-4 the empty tomb, the calendar year are sufficient evidences of the birth, death and resurrection of Jesus.
