Agbegbaorogboye: He was looking at it in terms of remittances. He is a bit right in the sense of dollar inflow into a dollarized economy. But in literal terms, I agree with your analysis 100%. I will also add that we all know that the agriculture that keeps majority of Nigerians busy is predominant in the North. And I can hazard a guess that number of families in the North who have people outside to send them money can't be more than 10% of the northern population!! And that's a very extravagant guess. Oh, and let me also say that a good amount of those remittances is actually monies kept in overseas account by our polithiefcians. exactly, there is no contesting that. I agree that diaspora remittance is the major source of Forex, that and the other points you stated. Cheers |

IbeOkehie: Maybe he did or he didn't, my own contention is simple - the assertion that it's easier for a Nigerian to become a dollar millionaire in Nigeria than in the US/UK/Canada is still wrong. It's easy to pick this or that person or situation, I prefer to look at the data and where there's strong arguments on a particular facet of an issue, I go to broad measures.
There's no way at all that his assertion is true. The budget of the Federal Government of Nigeria has been running around $21 billion for the past 5 years, Nigerians abroad remit anywhere from $10 to 25 billion every year through official channels. Nigerians abroad are the ones keeping Nigeria afloat, not crude oil. When you think about broad measures like this, you realize how POOR Nigerians are as a whole. I could go on and on with all kinds of data, so you have to understand why it's hard to convince me that it's easier to make money in Nigeria than the West.
How many foreign investors have pulled out of Nigeria in the past decade? Even Exxon Mobil, a major energy company, has pulled out of the Nigeria retail fuel market, yes they did and I bet you many Nigerians don't know this.
https://www.ogj.com/general-interest/article/17250725/exxonmobil-sells-nigerian-retail-business
Think about it, Exxon Mobil pulling out of a major crude oil & natural gas producing country like Nigeria. They like to make money but apparently, for some reason, they find it hard to do in Nigeria. People should look into WHY they divested. What other EVIDENCE do you want me to look at? The truth is in the data, go check out the foreign investment inflow data for Nigeria. It's a simple thing!
I PERSONALLY know MANY people who have invested HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS of US dollars in all sorts of ventures in Nigeria since the early 1990's, from farming to fishery to IT to agro processing to real estate, the VAST MAJORITY lost almost all their money, including ME, yes, I did it too.
Where is this money in Nigeria biko nu? Please people let us rest.....Nigeria is a Communist country and communist countries don't prosper. Nigerians abroad are NOT the ones keeping Nigeria afloat. If an unenlightened person said this, I could look past it. Will be happy to dive I have kuma dived in Then again, I might as well just state the FACT I want to state. Diaspora remittance of 20billie is a measly 4% of the GDP at over 500billion. India diaspora remittance that I shared on this thread, or another about a month ago is about 5% of their GDP but you don't hear the Indians saying that is what is keeping the economy afloat, cos hey how can 4 or 5% keep something afloat?? The news you read that makes you guys throw around that figure all the time, you didn't read it in-depth. What that article showed/said is that diaspora remittance is a major source of FOREx to the country, and it stops there! Saying that is what is keeping the economy is not grounded on anything. Also, I have said this earlier too, that when the time comes and we read the report of the capital flight in dollars that the japa movement is fuelling, it will far exceed 20billion. So as the billions have come in to the families that need them, the billions have also gone out on top japa. Estimate how much it takes to run student visa parol in UK for a family of 3 in USD and tell me what that accrues to when you do for Nigerians that have thronged UK in the last one year. Let's not even talk Canada or US or Australia or everywhere else ppll are running too, just UK, then you will see that this 20billie noise is just noise.

TheGuyFromHR: Your company must have a leave policy. Read it and find out what you are entitled to. Most of the people who have responded to you are correct, apart from the person who said you are entitled to bereavement leave for your father in law's death. That is not correct. If I remember correctly, the statutory bereavement leave entitlement is only for the death of an employee's child.
You are indeed entitled to annual leave from the time you take up employment, even when on probation. So it is your company's leave year that will determine how many days you have left, and of course leave can only be taken in line with the company's needs, e.g. if you want to go in January and they say no, go in February for so and so reason (other people have leave that period, the company has something important doing then, etc.), you can't legally dispute that. If your employer allows unpaid leave, you can of course apply for that as well.
As others have pointed out, your message implies you aren't eager to travel for this funeral. Making decisions is of course your right as an individual, irrespective of tradition (so-called tradition is only silly and slavish devotion to long dead people's ways of doing things which may or may not still work for the living in current circumstances) and I am no fan of people who profess undying fealty to tradition, but in your shoes, if it is indeed the case that you'd rather not go, I would consider carefully and make a very strong case for doing so. yea right, cool. When either of her parents too pass on, the husband better sit his ass down in the UK and not move an inch, or I will personally swear for him. But then again, quite a few people I know abroad (less than 5yrs away) wey lose their parents, didn't come o. They only sent money, na ebi do burial. So this may actually be the new normal, paying last respects over the phone. Oh well! |

Fartist: haba Maybe true for consultants sonnie10 did not offer perspective. Yes fartist you are right. Consultants as we call them here, are called attendings there, they have completed residency and gained experience in a specialty and passed the required certifying exams for that specialty, and they are surgeons not just primary care physicians. Read this to gain some perspective. The exams to pass to become a primary care physician alone, na first hurdle that most of the Americans sef find it difficult to cross. Then comes residency and choosing a specialty where/when the big bucks come in. There is a reason most Nigerians healthcare professionals choose the UK, it is far far easier. That said if you are able to scale those hurdles in the US and complete the residency, the pay is hoooooge, especially when the student loans have finally been paid off. This is to let you be aware that no be say any docs as we know them go just enter US and start earning 200k plus. Nah! SeaTrade: You're even missing the main point. The so called remittances sent to Nigeria by diasporans mostly come in through the parallel market(aboki),since CBN rate and parallel rate is very Wide ,with parallel rate being more attractive, thus play no part in stabilising our currency against the dollar and as such useless! The only way to solve this problem is to abolish BDC practices and hence direct such inflow to the CBN . So technically, we as a country receive almost zero diaspora remittance and therefore diasporans are almost inconsequential to our economy. bro, e be like say you no know this travel section . I know, but I didn't want to go that deep, cos surface level stuff sef, and you'll see some folks will start bouncing off walls. So my submission was based on me simply agreeing to the basic premise that diaspora remittance na 20billion, BUT also reminding them of outflows which are not considered most times when those figures are thrown around, outflows that certainly will dwarf the 20billie inflow. So yes, your conclusion is apt, BUT also of a truth, at least some daddies and mummies and families got some money from the abroad, without which they would have drowned in raging financial seas here in Nigeria. |

tommy589: Pardon me, i am not making reference to Nigerians like you.
Just stating the figures out there details yearly remittances is getting close to our annual budget which can not be accounted for great..yea it is getting quite close, but still not really impactful as the outflow matches or even surpasses it. 20billion comes in as inflow, more billions go out as outflow. I'm sure when a report is done about the capital flight due to japa, it will dwarf the $20b inflow by far. Anyway, as you have said, the families that need the money to stay afloat from their relatives abroad, got the money. End of. |
