NiyiOmoIyunade: A manual charger - those basic ones that simply feed an AC waveform through a rectifier circuit to produce DC voltage.
Manual because they are not smart and have no DC regulation or cutoff - they simply keep putting out a fixed voltage and current into the battery so you have to manually terminate the charge once you have determined the battery is fully charged else battery go swell.
I had one of those and used an MPPT CC to regulate the output voltage of the charger - sort of to simulate a regulated 3 stage charge - I cannot say for certain how well it went as I quickly determined that the battery I was trying to salvage was beyond repair and ended the experiment.
I do remember though that a PWM CC I had did not even pass through the voltage to battery when I connected the manual charger to the PV input of the CC. Oh ok.... I get that now. Interesting. I have been using a cheap pwm with a battery of laptop chargers to charge my battery for months now. It did charge the battery, but i noticed when the battery got to float, it still allowed a sizeable amount of current to pass through to the battery. Since power supply here is very epileptic i didn't bother about it since i would be lucky if the battery hit float before we had a power cut. |

So curiosity get the better of me eventually and i have my answers now.. Armed with niyiomolunade s reply i 1. Took a laptoolp power supply rated at 24v/2.5A 2. Using a clamp i momentarily shorted the output to see how the adapter itself behaves in a dead short. I noticed it simply cuts supply once amps reaches about 2A for about 1sec then resumes again. Repeating the same process if the same condition persists. 3. Armed with this new information, i connected the laptop charger to the PV input of my expensive fangpusun 100v/30amps mppt controller. ResultController mppt control showed battery charging at 13.3v/ 5-6A. Since the laptop power supply is rated at about 2A, it was apparent the mppt was doing a buck conversion and charging the battery. So my curiosity satisfied at last! I love Science! Next is to use a higher regulated I/V to feed the mppt controller and see what happens as it tracks that mpp. Cheers. |

NiyiOmoIyunade: Somebody here once tried this - I think his NL moniker was @Sinistrian or so - he fed his Zinox hybrid's PV input with the output of another MPPT CC. Really? I'll go look for him When I think about it and based on similar experiments I have tried using an MPPT CC to modulate the output of a manual battery charger, my conclusion is that an MPPT CC can take any DC input within it's voltage range - the issue is with the DC power source being able to handle a variable load as the CC varies its internal electrical profile (not sure the right term is 'resistance') to pull more or less current Nice... This is basically the kind of info i need. What do you mean by manual though? Tolerate the maximum current draw the MPPT may impose from time to time (current limiting ability inside the MPPT may be desirable) Very true this. I am thinking a fuse rated at about half the current rating of the charger should do the trick incase the mppt wants to pull too much current. What dyu think? The DC power source feeding the MPPT input has to be able to
1) Generate and sustain the required MPPT operating voltage
2) Tolerate the maximum current draw the MPPT may impose from time to time (current limiting ability inside the MPPT may be desirable)
3) Tolerate the very variable load profile the MPPT will present as it sweeps to find a sweet spot. Thank you so much for your incisive input always egbon. |

mank1234: There are cheap mppt controllers on aliexpress. You can get one and try, if no one is willing to donate. Yeah, thats a point. But the few "cheap" ones i know of seem to simply do a buck or conversion. I'm not so certain their mppt algorithms are shock proof like more expensive ones_maybe anyone willing to join spare cash with me to purchase one should indicate....Learning new stuffs gives me a special kind of high, but cash is limited jare. Talking abt the cheap ones tho, I'll appreciate a link to check and see if its within my pocket's reach. Thanks for the input bro... |

@chris @niyiomolyunade and other DIYers
Can an mppt controller be fed with a regulated DC supply? I have read conflicting ideas on how it will perform. Some say the algorithms that mppt devices operate with may cause it to self-destruct or destroy the power supply. Others say it should work as long as the the power supply has some current limiting feature in it's design.
There isn't any practical video or article about it i could lay my hands on.
So what dyu guys think?
And anyone who has an mppt controller that they don't mind sacrificing for science I'll like to see a practical demonstration of such connection. I dnt mind collecting and carrying out the experiment myself if the donor prefers it that way. |

olaolu11: I took this battery from a ups and connected it to my panel to watch a program. The following morning i left it to charge while my wife watch tv. Unfortunately she went out and by the time she came back, all she was hearing was a shrill noise. Rather than disconnect, remove this battery and return to the original battery, she put on the tv and the noise stopped. Case settled as far as she is concerned. By the time I came home in the evening and she told me all, the battery is bloated ti this level( picture attached). 1. Can i still 'manage' use the battery? 2. What is the implication eg fire hazzard, explosion etc? 2. Why fidnt the cc trip off and stop the vharge agter the battery became full, or is it not suppose to do so. It is a 12/24v pwm 4. Would incorporating a fuse after the cc prevent such occurence in the future for even if i am using a bihger battery (100ah for example) and it gets full while i am not home, suvh can still happen. 5. I am saving up for a mppt cc (that fake/original that was a csuse of argument on this loop recently, bluegate or do: will confirm the name) Thsnks all Village pipo dinor shook hand for the matter. Abidec76: Good morning fellow hustler in the house.
Give away SUNDAY was really superb and shows we truly love each other.
I will like to share a secret with you this morning, I hope it benefit lots of people. I was online yesterday when I saw a post on a lady who died due to the fact that her colleagues and friends called her a fat Woman.... To cut the long story short she went to the hospital for surgery in removing some body fats. Unfortunately she later died after a successful surgery.
Pls there is a NATURAL WAY TO reduce our big STOMACH. ITS CALLED WATER THERAPY. No need of Exercise or drinking of different TEA , IT WORKS LIKE MAGIC.
THE PROCEDURE IS THAT DRINK WATER IN THE MORNING STARTING FROM 5AM OR BEFORE BREAKFAST EVERY DAY. Wait for 3 to 4 hrs before eating anything. By doing that I can guarantee you 3 days after you start it, your stomach will reduce and you will use the TOILET more often.
Its working for me and my sister and am truly happy. I believe it will work for all. Imagine you doing that for 3 or 6month you will achieve your desired results.
THANKS AND GOD BLESS. GOOD MORNING ALL AND DO HAVE A GREAT DAY AHEAD.

generationz: Please I have a few questions too
1. Do you think the zinox pwerbank is really 105000mah . it charges my laptop for 12 hours after a single charge.
2. 105000 mah translates to 105ah right?
3. That means its twices bigger than a 40ah lifepo4 battery, right?
4. Would a 66000mah zinox Powerbank be better than two 20,000 mah rommoss power banks for phones? I've heard rommoss charges phones well about 4times for a 20000 mah power bank.
Do you think the 66000 mah zinox power bank is really up to that or its just for marketing sake? Compare batteries in watt hours rather than amp/hrs..... The missing voltage is used to mislead people when battery capacity is being adver tized most times |

ojeysky: 16k do you have direct DC setup or you are doing conversion? For the ceiling fan? Pls link of store u got it. To whom it may concern: I have noticed that not all DC fans come with brushless dc motors. Some simply use a brush dc motor. That is still more energy efficient than an ac motor, but a brushless dc motor is the best energy wise, plus it doesn't generate static noise that can interfere with radio signals. Just so you knw. |

mank1234: 2kWhr from an array of 1.5kw is not impressive. You should be doing 3-6kWhr if the system is performing optimally (enough load and battery bank to accept all it can generate)
KWhr explanation: your system works from morning to evening generating power in kw ranging from 0kw to 1.5kw since your panel max at 1.5kw. The sum of all that generation is taken taken to hour term. Example if you have a constant 600w power output for 10min that's equivalent to {600*10/60} ie 100Whr. So a 2kWhr generation can be said to be 2kW power output for 1hr but in reality the power was lower (less than 1.5kW) spanning a period between 6am and 6pm Thank you for clarifying this. There is a difference between kw/hr Value and harvested peak power value. |
