Study the history of the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern (orthodox) Church. Russia, Ukraine are heavily orthodox Christians. I interact with lots of them and they identify as Christians.

Putjn hates Islam with all his blood, and yes, he is a Christian. But he has his political ideologies that overrule his Christian beliefs.
