malc619: So anyone who now says anything negative about saint Fashola is an Ibo man. Look how myopic and tribalistic you are. For your information, am from Akwa Ibom state and proudly resident in uyo. It's known everywhere that you can't compare quality of roads is Akwa Ibom to anywhere in your village . Even my street has better roads and street lights compared to the road leading to your government house (K-Line , Ewet Housing Estate , uyo). The address is for you to confirm what I just stated. If I brag about my government, its because I personally can enjoy its dividends. I don't need to go about looking for beautiful pictures to use and brag on the internet . I still challenge Eko Ile (or whatever the buttlicker chooses to answer ) if he can proudly post pictures of his street so that we can appreciate how Fashola has performed there! 15 Likes |

agbameta: Can you sincerely say the road to your house looks anything like what you have posted? Can't you see how foolish you are? You go about taking beautiful pictures so as to praise your master and force people to see him as the best governor on earth , yet you can't post the pictures of your own street where you live because you are ashamed of it. You go about posting pictures of water works , yet you depend on mei-ruwa for water. Bloody shameless hypocrite. Someone who is suffering from bad road is putting up this article , so as to attract the attention of your elitist governor , and your here barking him down! Are you this shallow? Demdem: Ordinarily I chose to ignore this kid, but since your asking for explanations and I believe your a reasonable person unlike Eko Ile who has this bitterness about Akwa Ibom, I would break this down to the lay man's language , perhaps he too could learn. A budget is a document showing a government anticipated spending and also it's anticipated revenue. Just like every other thing, these spendings could fluctuate either higher or lower than anticipated , same way the revenues could fluctuate. Akwa Ibom state whose major source of revenue is oil is even more prone to this volatile nature of the country's oil production and oil prices. And having a budget of 80% capital and 20% recurrent , such drop in revenue threatens the timely completion of many capital projects. So the Government like every other one including Lagos state (which blazes the trail with a $611m debt) borrows money to shore up the short fall in the budget hence this isn't an additional spending. It is money added to achieve the 470 billion budget and paid back when there is excess revenue above what was budgeted. The result is that we can see mega projects completed in a timely fashion unlike some states where it takes 8 years to construct a 10km road due to paucity of funds. That's the secret behind the uncommon transformation in Akwa Ibom state. |

Demdem: No problems Bro! Still better that you come on a working day so you can visit some of the project sites such as TROPICANA which Eko Ile labeled as abandoned. I see you as a responsible fellow hence I would want to believe you were mislead by the lies of Eko Ile into believing those pictures originated from AKSG website or even Godswill Akpabio website. You are on the internet please feel free to search for them on these sites . In Akwa Ibom state , the government undertakes some micro projects especially in the rural areas, and these projects are valued from about 5m to about 15m. The projects range from renovations of classroom blocks, primary health centres, drilling of boreholes, and are all executed by direct labour. These projects are running simultaneously with other mega infrastructural projects being handled by major contractors. Its a means of providing immediate succour to a community whilst the major infrastructural projects is in progress . For example a community can have clean and portable water within 3 weeks at less than 10million , instead of waiting for 28 months for the major water recticulation works and concrete water towers to be completed. Why am I giving you these stories? its so that you will be able to distinguish major infrastructural projects and community development direct labour projects. I have noticed the haters quickly pounce on the latter and use such to propagate their falsehood . You can read more of this from the same websites. About me giving pictures , I have said it and will repeat it again , no Akwa Ibomite (at least not me) will glorify hasters on this forum with pictures of infrastructures we enjoy. These things are for our use and enjoyment not for internet propaganda. We are not like our brothers on the other side of the Niger who post pictures of schools they wouldn't want their kids to attend, post pictures of hospitals, yet rush to St Nicholas to treat malaria, post pictures of water works yet buy water from the private borehole operator down their street, who post pictures of a beautiful bridge they can't ply because of the exorbitant tolls. |

He has built several bridges, reconstructed several KM of FG roads, renovated several public schools and hospitals, constructed several water works (including the borehole which killed someone), give out free and compulsory education to everyone including non-indigenes. He and his cronies have stolen alot that he even bought a jet, yet saint Fashola hasn't stolen any money doesn't own any jet, but hasn't completed as many infrastructures as this fraudulent governor, yet he tolls you for the few roads and bridges you use, tax you for even the air you breathe, deport non indigenes because he can't cope with the population, and still put Lagos in a debt of over $600million . Please Eko Ile states don't have any part in international relations and diplomacy since these are the exclusive duties of the central government. Stop displaying your illiteracy while trying to promote your pay masters . The oyinbo men shaking Fashola's hand are just ambassadors or foreign envoys whose diplomatic missions are in Lagos and are there on a normal courtesy call. enny5: wow. such an insightful post. But permit me to ask you these questions , Were we ever developed before? Did we have all these things 3 years ago before GEJ came into power? Seems the only thing GEJ has done is to go around destroying all the massive infrastructures we had? You just exhibited the highest level of cluelessness by posting such. Unlike other people who would insult and abandon you, i will try to teach you some things about development especially in Nigeria . Before GEJ came into power our income was 90% dependant on oil, today it's reduced to about 65%. Yea that sounds Greek to you, what it means is that another sector of the economy has been revamped to help contribute to our income. Our agricultural exports have increased and the Govt is moving in to fill the next stage of the agricultural revolution which is building agro-allied industries so these agric produces could be processed in Nigeria and the refined products exported. Proof of this is the over 13 rice mills in the north, Dangote's tomato processing plant in Kano , the Chinese cassava processing mills. All these would be run by human beings hence generate employment thereby creating wealth. However the government can't guarantee everyone Will be employed because either they don't have required skills or they aren't available for employment because they spend all day on Nairaland scooping negative news about their government . |

After reading the story from our First lady and read the comments that follow I am shocked at the level of hypocrisy we have amongst our youths of today. The woman explained that she "begged" Amaechi four years ago to dialogue with the Okrika people before demolishing there homes. My people what is wrong in interceding for your people? Even Queen Esther in the bible interceded on behalf of her people when they were to be killed. Did she break any law by begging Amaechi ? We should even note that at this time she wasn't first lady but wife to the vice president. I agree some people would argue she should have gone to court, but people who know Amaechi will tell you that the man is radically stubborn and no court order would have prevented him from carrying out his wish, so PEJ, I believe towed the easy way which is persuasion. She further stated how Amaechi removed a democratically elected LG chairman . This isn't news because we know how Amaechi suspended 13 LG chairmen for coming late to a meeting with him. If GEJ had replicated same dose of medicine to Amaechi especially for coming late to the last function in which 3 presidents were already seated before he came in, most of you here would call GEJ all sorts of unprintable names. Nigerians , it's time we start reasoning from our own heads and not what we are fed with. People, especially politicians will always want to paint every scenario and person in a manner that it would be beneficial to them. Reasonable people would reach out to the people in Rivers state to hear first hand the genesis of the crises so as to learn a thing or two on how to avert such crises when we find ourselves as leaders, instead joining our shameless elders who have failed us in name calling . Amaechi may have performed above average but in a democracy if you fail to carry your people along and disobey constituted authorities you are a dictator. Ghadaffi performed far better than most democratic but corrupt African leaders but he was still seen as a dictator. |
Politics / Re: Lagos-abidjan Highway To Cost $2bn. Lagos-ibadan To Cost $1bn. #genius by tsomething: 7:36am On Jul 16, 2013 |
It sad Nigerians enjoy finding faults in any good move their Government does. Most people commenting here and even the Op may have never transversed the Lagos- Abidjan road . First thing you should note is that the Lagos- Ibadan road project is a total reconstruction and expansion with the introduction of bridges and necessary highway furniture, while the Lagos - Abidjan road project is just a project aimed at constructing some new road segments to add to some series of existing road network over several West African countries to form an unbroken chain of highway that would span from Lagos to Abidjan . Hence the total road constructed may never be up to 200km. Secondly, since this is an international road, hence labour and materials rates will surely be different for the various countries. We all know operational rates in Nigeria is generally higher than most other west African countries because of our harsh business environment . For example we know how expensive diesel costs in Nigeria, we know how high our interest rates are, we know how high our labour rates are (compared to our west African brothers), we know construction companies spend a lot providing security and basic amenities for their personnel unlike in other west African countries . Thirdly, we should consider the strength of the currencies of the various countries involved. Ask yourself what can $1000 do for you in Nigeria and ask a Togolese or even a Ghanaian what same amount can do for them. This greatly affects the price of the project since the various segments of the project will be awarded to contractors in the local currency of that country. Lastly, we should consider the time element of construction . Mr President awarded Lagos - Ibadan to Julius Berger and RCC and needs the road completed as soon as possible. Big contractors such as the above selected are aware of the Govt urgency in completing the project , and they are also aware of the bearuacratic bottle-necks involved in getting funding from Government. Hence they have to plan that they may pre-finance the project, so when you include the cost of money in Nigeria (about 18%) to the cost of the project you end up with figures such as what we have . Obasanjo awarded the project to BiCourtney at 99billion , 3 years later, there's nothing to show, now Mr President has not only tactically revoked the contract from the initial contractor (without causing a long legal battle since it was a concession agreement and money was spent by the initial contractor), he awarded it to two competent contractors just to speed up the completion time, and also redesigned the road to face modern realities on that axis, yet Nigerians are still complaining and calling him clueless. I wonder who is actually clueless . |

Itoroetti : Funny enough cement isn't just cement , same way sand isn't just sand. Even from the same supplier, a batch of cement may posses some slightly different properties which may affect its strength positively or negatively. however those little variation due to material imperfections are taken care off during designing. The kind of materials I was referring to are materials such reinforcements (popularly called iron rods) , additives , form work, etc |
Nairaland / General / Re: Julius Berger Vs CCECC by tsomething: 3:24pm On Jul 03, 2013 |
Itoroetti : This promises to be a very educational thread. But as an engineer and one privileged to have worked with one of both companies (Julius Berger ), I would say comparison should be based on many factors. First of all, JBN charges exorbitant rates compared to CCECC, and this accounts for the amount of equipments and man power deplored to a site (most times some of these equipments aren't even necessary), while CECC is prudent with man power and equipment . However the main way to compare the quality of works from both companies is to look at their quality control mechanisms. Julius Berger has a serious quality control mechanism which internally audits the quality of all their materials , methods and works that's why you will always find a laboratory in all their sites and yards. They in addition have independent quality control units who visit all their sites from time to time. On CCECC , I don't think they have such rigorous quality control mechanism because each project manager of a site is given full autonomy on his project. Meaning he is to manage the funds from the project and also ensure returns to the head office . So in this case, quality control relies on the perrogative of the project manager and the doggedness of the supervisory consultants and officials . I have worked as a consultant supervising CCECC on the World Bank assisted roads in Akwa Ibom, hence my knowledge of them. Also if you notice procurement of materials in JBN is done centrally and then transported to the various sites, while CCECC procures materials locally and most times give these supply contracts to the locals where the sites are located in order to promote peaceful coexistence with their host community . Materials centrally procured tend to have better quality than those procured locally . Hence its safe to say JBN still produces better quality than CCECC, however CCECC has proven they can produce quality jobs at cheaper rates but with strict supervision. 1 Like |

Beautiful thing about Akpabio's projects are that he doesn't start a project when he hasn't secured complete funds for the project . That way you can start and complete the project in record time, thereby putting the facility to use early, and recover investment on the project . Kudos to Godswill Akpabio . Meanwhile somewhere across the Niger, a governor just commissioned street lights, but is finding it difficult to complete a road of less than 20km even after 4yrs. 1 Like |

From the kind of comments I have just read on this thread , it shows Nigeria may never be great , not because things won't change for the better but because some elements are constantly looking for bad news just to massage their ego and prove how good their preferred idol is over the people's elected leader. Some people read that article and the only thing they could extract is that Akpabio is incompetent, meanwhile his name nor Akwa Ibom state government wasn't mentioned anywhere in the article . Even though a life was lost in this accident, they refuse to have any remorse or sympathy for the dead but instead advanced their evil political plot. We forget that accidents happen everywhere and even to the most competent contractor and governor. You can ask Oshimole, whose specialist hospital project had stopped work for over a year due to the collapse of the 4 floor structure . Contractor? RCC. Now someone should tell me they aren't competent. One of the Idiots who claims to know Akwa Ibom state so well and lied to you that work on the specialist hospital had stopped and snapped pictures of the hospital project for you, was so ashamed to snap pictures of one of the water works directly opposite where he stood to take pictures of the hospital . Why? Either because its bigger than any water works his paymasters have hence he couldn't decipher what it stood for or because it would contradict his lies. I have said it on several threads and would still repeat here, Akwa Ibom projects are for Akwa Ibom people to use and enjoy, and not for internet propaganda like some people do. We that voted Akpabio know the efforts of our government in transforming the state and it is marvelous in our sight, hence we are not obliged in anyway to post pictures to prove these don't care how someone who isn't here nor voted here feels about the state . Lastly I want to say Rest in Peace to the dead and wish the injured speedy recovery. 13 Likes |

ba7man: The Kalimba housing project in Angola can house 500,000 individuals and costed $2.2 billion to construct (Its a ghost town right now though). With the amount Akpabio receives as state allocation, he could have constructed a similar project half its size, a good road network, provided uninterrupted power supply and left the doors open for companies to struggle for space to get into Akwa-Ibom...He hasn't done anything major yet to make people flock in that direction for employment, that's why those roads are still empty. He needs a thriving population to make that State Economically viable or else all the infrastruture will remain under utillized. My brother I would beg to disagree with you on your plan for increasing the economic base of Akwa Ibom. First and foremost investors would like to situate their factories in areas where the cost of production should be fairly cheaper and have a good market or have means of transporting them to other markets. The government of AKSG has invested heavily into providing infrastructures not just for our immediate population of 5million people, but for the future. These infrastructures are linking up cities outside the capital city Uyo , making it easier for people to live in Abak or Ikot Ekpene and still work in Uyo . The proposed Ibaka deep seaport is one of the few natural deep sea ports in the whole of Africa. Its location is strategic towards serving not just Nigerians but countries within the gulf of guinea. Also the Akwa Ibom airport, which is also to be a cargo and international airport, just recently got approval from Mr President to also serve as an agro airport for transporting perishable food items to markets. Don't forget the airport will also have an MRO (maintenance , repair and overhaul) facility , making it the only airport on the northern African hemisphere with such facility. All these will surely drive economic activities in the state . Also the Government in trying to participate from the economic activities of its two neighbours (cross river and Abia ) is ensuring that all the roads linking these states are in a very good shape (even though they are FG roads ). Very soon a traveler from Aba would prefer to use the Akwa Ibom airport which may be farther than PH airport ,but because he's sure he can get to the airport in less than an hour in a world class dual carriageway without traffic . An importer in Aba would prefer to use the Ibaka sea port for landing his containers, instead Lagos port considering the transportation cost. So you see my brother , this government isn't building for the present , but for the future Akwa Ibom state |

ba7man: I strongly disagree with you. You can't expect them to operate at the same speed when the projects they are initiating and problems they're encountering aren't on the same scale. Fashola has to deal with over population(x4) of what Akabio has to deal with, congested roads, building clusters, slums, illegal market encroachments and lawless individuals......meanwhile Akpabio just bulldozes virgin lands and starts work.....all on the same amount. Akpabio has far less challenges to worry about. And work is on-going in all those lagos projects you mentioned. You don't expect a city to rise out of the Ocean in around 5 years, do you?.....BTW, that Badagry Express road has always being in ruins till the Fashola administration decided to fix it. And you saying the elevated rail line proves you've not been to Lagos in a long time. The concrete footings are there for all to see and workers are always on site. Please do your research well. Eko Atlantic city is fully funded by private bodies. Lagos state counterpart funding comes in the form of the taxes leveraged for the inventors and contractor. Fashola has never released any dime for that project and the project was initially conceived to curb the ocean surge on Victoria Island residents |
