Truthonly:Eph 1:13-14 (13) In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, (14) Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. As I said before,we only have the clearance/assurance of eternal life. The holy spirit is that assurance of that eternal life that we are yet to receive. The holy Spirit is like the down payment for that eternal life. When u have made a downpayment on a car,u can always claim that it is ur own,but the fact still remains that u can't use it yet until the payment is made in full. We have a downpayment on eternal life, but we haven't attained it yet. Don't read a few aspects on eternal life/salvation and make conclusions;read everything on it. |
Truthonly:The verse u quoted above is simply somebody's wish/hope/prayer for somebody else and not what God said that he wishes for us. 3Jn 1:2(ISV) (2) Dear friend, I pray that you are doing well in every way and that you are healthy, just as your soul is healthy. 3Jn 1:2(CEV) (2) dear friend, and I pray that all goes well for you. I hope that you are as strong in body, as I know you are in spirit. 3Jn 1:2(BBE) (2) My loved one, it is my prayer that you may do well in all things, and be healthy in body, even as your soul does well. |
Truthonly:Sorry man. Zoe does not mean eternal life.It simply means life. it is another word for life. Eternal life also is not one word together; it is two words together and they are: aiōnios and zōē Eternal life has not yet been achieved by any living person or Christian. It is yet to be received;when Christ returns and we are glorified. It is in the world to come. Mark 10:29-30 (29) And Jesus answered and said, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or brethren, or sisters, or father, or mother, or wife, or children, or lands, for my sake, and the gospel's, (30) But he shall receive an hundredfold now in this time, houses, and brethren, and sisters, and mothers, and children, and lands, with persecutions; and in the world to come eternal life. We have only recieved the clearance for eternal life, but we haven't achieved it yet. |
KunleOshob:I am fine. ![]() T'is just work that is keeping me busy for these past weeks. |
I watched Pastor Chris a day or two back on Superscreen tv. He was preaching from 2 Corinthians 4:17-18: 2Co 4:17-18 (17) For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory; (18) While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. As usual, he was lying through his teeth as he interpreted the above passage. He made his followers to believe that current hard situations that they face are only temporal and that soon things would turn out for the best for them. He made them believe that current stuff like"a bad job","a low pay",etc should not be looked at cos they are things that are seen;but that they should look at the things that are not seen such as "a terrific job","a superpowered pay"etc. He made them understand that they should look at things that are not seen(in his own interpretation,he referred to earthly blessings) and not the current state of their lives. He said that was having faith. He was able to decieve them into believing this by preaching up to half of verse 18. Cos if he had read the remaining half to them(which is italisized above in the bible passage),they'd have known he was lying to them. ". . . .for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal." If what he is claiming is as it is,why does the bible say that those things which are not seen are eternal? Can a better job be forever? Can a higher and comfortable pay be forever? Can financial stability/prosperity be forever? Aren't the only things that are eternal those things in the afterlife/when we are with God? Crappy man. ![]() |
The girl in question has no business being torn between any of the two guys. The relationship which she has with either of the two is too short for her to be even considering anything akin to marriage. Marriage is not a child's play issue. You need time(we're talking at least 1 - 2 yrs) for you to even considering marrying anybody whom u've met. Why do women get blown away with month(s) old relationships and start considering marriage? Is marriage all they came to this earth to accomplish? Is it by force that one must marry sef? Please re-attach ur torn parts together and detach any marriage issues from either guy and treat them both as friends(not even boyfriends). As time goes on, you will be able to determine what is good enough for you and what is right before making any plans or decisions about marriage. N/B: it takes time to build meaningful relationships. Months are too short; years are worth it. |
KunleOshob:Now this has to be looked at alongside this: 1Co 3:13-15 (13) Every man's work shall be made manifest: for the day shall declare it, because it shall be revealed by fire; and the fire shall try every man's work of what sort it is. (14) If any man's work abide which he hath built thereupon, he shall receive a reward. (15) If any man's work shall be burned, he shall suffer loss: but he himself shall be saved; yet so as by fire. Anybody getting the drift of verse 15? |
Not here to comment about the topic but to make an observation. Tonye-t, what have u been up to? The tone of ur posts here suggest something funny/fishy. You don't usually talk/write like this? You high on something? ![]() |
Some people are just too scared to accept the fact that their destiny/life is not in the total control of their hands. Can't they realize that without God they would not even exist in the first place? it's now a problem to accept the fact that he determines how our lives are to play out? It's never and has never and will never be how we determine that this our lives will play out; it is as God determines. Rom 9:16(KJV) (16) So then it is not of him that willeth, nor of him that runneth, but of God that sheweth mercy. Rom 9:16(ISV) (16) Therefore, God's choice does not depend on a person's will or effort, but on God himself, who shows mercy. Rom 9:16(CEV) (16) Everything then depends on God's mercy and not on what people want or do. Rom 9:16(BBE) (16) So then, it is not by the desire or by the attempt of man, but by the mercy of God. |
OLAADEGBU:It's like u do not like to look at the truth even when presented before u. Pharaoh hardened his heart because God wanted him to. It was never because Pharaoh hardened his heart that God hardened it more(can u see how absurd ur claims are?). Exo 4:21 (21) And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go. Exo 7:1-3 (1) And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet. (2) Thou shalt speak all that I command thee: and Aaron thy brother shall speak unto Pharaoh, that he send the children of Israel out of his land. (3) And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt. Exo 7:13 (13) And he hardened Pharaoh's heart, that he hearkened not unto them; as the LORD had said. Now where did u see that it was because Pharaoh hardened his heart that God hardened it? God had a plan and purpose and he hardened Pharaoh's heart for that purpose to take effect. The Chapter 8 u keep building ur phantom theory upon was a result of what God had done and not what Pharaoh had done. |
JeSoul: No problem. I expected this would happen some time. The problem is: most of us have been so ingrained with the belief that our wills are our own entirely. it's so hard for us to acknowledge the glaring facts that our wills are the result of what God does and not what we of our own could decide they would be. Even when presented with glaring facts that should debunk our default positions of believing our wills are free, our default response is to still remain adamant. It takes a while but if we decide to trust and believe what God's word says and not read our own meanings(based on what we feel should be)into it, we'll find ourselves acknowledging the truth. Pharaoh's example is a clear cut situation that shows that God determines our wills. Pharaoh hardened his heart because it was what God wanted him to do. Paul knew this and acknowledged that fact in Romans. But majority of Christian adherents today find this impossible to take in. It isn't surprising. such is the case with so many other aspects of this our Christian faith that so many aren't even aware of today. Well, with so much resistance to the fact that we do not possess free wills, it would be nice to hear from other Christians who also know that we definitely do not possess any free will. Any such persons on nairaland? I think I know a few, but I'd rather let them say so themselves. |
JeSoul:When i said Paul had access to the true meaning of the old testament stuff, that wasn't to discredit Moses. It was to discredit those of us that do not understand what happened during the old testament. I never brushed aside Exodus 8. I only did not bother to speak on it because it was simply a result of all i have been saying: That God hardened Pharaoh's heart. Chapter 8 was simply a response to what God did to his heart. My points so far has been that God hardened his heart and that is the primary issue here; Pharaoh's response is secondary since it was just a result of God's work on him. |
JeSoul:Jesoul, my point(s) aren't absurd. If u aren't ready to accept the fact that what Paul said was the case, how about what Moses said(or wrote for us to read): Exo 4:21 (21) And the LORD said unto Moses, When thou goest to return into Egypt, see that thou do all those wonders before Pharaoh, which I have put in thine hand: [b]but I will harden his heart, that he shall not let the people go. Now, how absurd are my points? ![]() Pharaoh's hardening of his heart in the chapter 8 which u spoke about was just the result of God's hardening of it. ![]() |
lightwalk: You're naughty! ! |
JeSoul:It's so hard for me to start dealing with all these points one at a time. But I'll just say something general to deal with them all. The pharaoh situation which u explained is based on how u feel it ought to be and not how the bible says it is. We know what happened during the old testament; what the new testament says about what happened is what we take cos the apostles said it as thus. If Paul says it was God that hardened Pharaoh's heart, then that is what happened. I believe the apostles were given access to the true meanings of stuff that happened during the old testament and that their explanations of them are what is supposed to be. Your scenario of the friend who sins is only plausible in a situation where it is man dealing with man.But the case we are deasling with here is betweeen a creator and his creations. If anything seems to go wrong or wayward with the creations/products of a creator/manufacturer, the fault is from the creator/manufacturer. If the creator/manufacturer sees that allowing a situation which would definitely lead to a malfunctioning of his creation/product, and still allows that situation, the creator/manufacturer is responsible;not the creation/products. Now, as regards determining/controlling/causing our wills, here is a simple example: A group of kids have dressed up and packed up ready to go to the beach on a bright saturday morning. As they were about to step out of their abode to head to the beach, the sky suddenely darkened; the wind howled and flung everything in its path away, and then the sky opened and heavy rain descended. This rain continued its heavy tempo for the rest of the day and the kids could not go to the beach. Now, this kids had a will and purpose to go to the beach; but with the turn of events, they had to decide to stay indoors for the rest of the day. Now, hasn't that rain determined/caused or controlled their will in a particular direction? And isn't God the one responsible for the weather? as it is, God set up an event that determined/caused/controlled their wills in the expected direction he wanted. |
JeSoul:As I have said before, we have wills, but these wills are brought about by what God has done. In the aspect of us choosing to believe or not believe, that is also brought about by what God does. See the below: Joh 6:44 (44) No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. The above shows that without God's influence, we can't even choose to believe in God. Joh 15:16 (16) Ye have not chosen me, but I have chosen you, and ordained you, that ye should go and bring forth fruit, and that your fruit should remain: that whatsoever ye shall ask of the Father in my name, he may give it you. This verse also implies the same thing.Without Christ/God choosing us, there wouldn't even be the question of us choosing to believe in him. Now, this is the case of those who do not choose to believe: 2Co 4:4 (4) In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. They cannot choose to believe because they have been blinded by the devil; showing that unless John 6:44/John 15:16 takes place for them, they would never be able to choose to believe. That makes it clear that our choices are based on what God does and not what we of our own think we can do. |
James 4:13-15 |
JeSoul:If u mean that maybe I'm with the Calvinists, u're wrong. My position is that both groups are wrong in some parts. I agree with the meat of this quote, but the conclusion is flawed.Permitting/allowing something is equal to being responsible for it. If u see something about to happen and u do not stop it when u can makes u responsible when it does happen. God knows when evil is about to happen and he lets it happen since it all goes along with the fulfilment of his plans. Nothing takes him by surprise. When the devil wanted to work on Job, God allowed it and he was responsible for what happened to Job. Even Job knew who the source of his issues where and he placed that source as God.He didn't say it was the devil because it was clear to him that the devil was a creation of God fulfilling its purpose. Job 1:21 (21) And said, Naked came I out of my mother's womb, and naked shall I return thither: the LORD gave, and the LORD hath taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD. Job 23:10 (10) But he knoweth the way that I take: when he[God] hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold. -[The whole of chapter 23 says a lot] Ultimately, we can still say God is responsible for the evil that exists since we know that the devil is the source of evil and this same devil is a creation of God for such purpose. A creator is responsible for his creations. |
JeSoul:There's not much to say as regards the seemingly contradictory verses. Exodus's presentation was a narrative of actual events taking place while Romans presentation was a "behind-the-scenes" look at it. Romans was actually telling us why what happened did happen Good approach in breaking it down but I still find the highlighted portions problematic. God doesn't make anybody do anything ttalks, that is just not biblically accurate. Does He influence us? yes, does He control us? no.Dan 4:35 (35) To him the nations are far less than nothing; God controls the stars in the sky and everyone on this earth. When God does something, we cannot change it or even ask why." Rom 9:19 (19) Someone may ask, "How can God blame us, if he makes us behave in the way he wants us to?" Take a second to really think about what you just asserted here, heck take two seconds! lol This is insinuating God is responsible for all the evil, for the fall of Adam and Eve, for everything . . . please rethink and revise brotha. My position on Adam and eve is that God created two humans that were capable of sinning(not perfect humans) and placed the temptation and tempter with them for it to happen. Note: Eve already had commited some sins before she took the fruit. What sins u might ask. - "…saw that the tree was good for food [‘the lust of the flesh,’ I John 2:16], - and that it was pleasant to the eyes [‘the lust of the eyes,’ I John 2:16], - and a tree to be desired to make one wise [‘the pride of life,’ I John 2:16], Care to explain why? what are your perceived deficiencies of holding such a position? To me is both satifies the fact we have free will and God's ultimate purpose will always be accomplished. The verses i've been putting up all this while which have been showing that God does affect or influence our wills make me take such a position. Also, it doesn't seem to make sense if we say God knew how we would act and work his will around it and then later say or admit that he influences our wills. Suggesting that God only works his will around how we would act implies that his will is subject to ours instead of the other way around. I know we have wills, but my position is that they are not free(that is; are not free/independent of God's will or purpose). Our wills(both ours and that of those that aren't saved yet) are brought about by what God has put into motion or in place; they are not independent/free of these things. |
While some of us are trying to give possible explanations to those verses I gave, i think we should do some checking up on Arminianism and Calvinism. That is where most of our Christian theology falls between. Normally, our proper Christian faith faults those two in different ways. |
For clarity's sake, I want anybody to explain some verses properly: Dan 4:35 (35) To him the nations are far less than nothing; God controls the stars in the sky and everyone on this earth. When God does something, we cannot change it or even ask why." Php 2:13 (13) For it is God who is producing in you both the desire and the ability to do what pleases him. Some simple explanations of this verses would help. |
A little thing to look at: If there was no evil in this world, we would not know what good is. |
and if you don't, how do you explain these verses in scripture? There are stuff we do that can be said as doing God's will; that is,his will which we can do. such as keeping his commandments. There are also stuff which God wills and they happen whether we like it or not .eg. If he wants rain to fall today; so we can't limit God's will to what he wants us to do. Earthquakes that happen are God's will, so are floods, hurricanes, etc. Those are not stuff that we can say or do anything about; showing that God's will is beyond what our responses are to be towards his word. As regards God having foreknowledge as to what we will do and then working with that knowledge to accomplish his will, . . . . . . . . . . I do not buy that idea as how his will is accomplished. I rather see it as he has determined that this or that is how things will be and then sets events into motion that make us and every other thing flow accordingly. |
JeSoul:Jesoul, If context is what we are regarding here, the way u explained resisting God's will as regards Romans 9 is not entirely correct. verse 17 says God raised Pharaoh for the purpose which we all know. verse 18 says he hardened his heart;which we all know. verse 19 is saying :why does he find fault [that would be with Pharaoh, since he(God) hardened his heart]? The who hath resisted his will is in reference to that hardening of Pharaoh's heart.God's will was that pharaoh's heart be hardened and pharaoh could not resist that will. It is in that same sense that one can ask generally that who can or has resisted God's will. God's will can be seen in so many ways: - His ultimate will; which is the salvation of mankind. - what he wants /expects us to do. - what he expects the devil to do. - what he causes to happen;whether good or bad. - what he makes the wrongdoers do. - what he makes us to do. - what he prevents us from doing. Etc, God's will goes far beyond what we can ever imagine and it sure isn't limited to the "always beautiful expectations" we keep reminiscing about. The sooner that we realize that whatever happens under the sun is God's will, the better for us. If there's : - Life -death -joy -sadness - happiness - sorrow - peace - war - love - hate - crime - justice - etc. all are God's will; and they are all working together towards the accomplishment of his ultimate will/purpose. |
Joh 19:10-11 (10) Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee? (11) Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin. ^ ^ ^ ^ Jesus telling Pilate that he had no power to determine anything except it were given from above. That's clearly another point against this free/independent of God's will which many of us believe in. |
lightwalk:It doesn't have to be this way u know. ![]() But the fact still remains: We can't resist God's will; so our wills are subject and dependent on his own (This is the plain truth). Why do we shy away from the obvious? Php 2:13 (13) For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. The above is confirming the fact that whatever we are willing at any point in time is because of God working in us to do of his good pleasure. Another way of putting it is: It is because God is working in us [remember the control from some other verse? ] that we will at all. |
lightwalk:And the bible does say that u are wrong: Rom 9:19 (19) You may ask me, "Then why does God still find fault with anybody? For who can resist his will?" - [The obvious answer to this question is "NO ONE". Being outside his will would mean resisting it.] Dan 4:35 (35) To him the nations are far less than nothing; God controls the stars in the sky and everyone on this earth. When God does something, we cannot change it or even ask why." - [The control shown which God exhibits over us is 100% of the time; so we are never outside his will] It's just like a company that has a vision to develop a wired world. The employees are told not to do things that are outside the vision of the company. The manager lays out his plan in a perfect way and is sure of the future outcome. But He does not control his employees unnecessarily. He intervenes only when it is necessary. That's why Jesus did not come earth until it was time for Him. That's what is meant by free will my dear.Sorry, this doesn't portray how God is or how he functions. Ur scenario above shows that the employees are in control of their wills. In the case of God, our wills are determined by his. |
lightwalk:lightwalk, I hardly have much to say. The bible is being very clear. It's just that we find it hard to accept that all we do or will ever do is according to God's will and not our own. Our own wills are brought about by God's will. |
Dan 4:35 (35) To him the nations are far less than nothing; God controls the stars in the sky and everyone on this earth. When God does something, we cannot change it or even ask why." Does this show God fashioning his will according to ours or God fashioning ours to his? Truth be told: We can only will according to God's will. And such a will(ours) is not free/independent of God's will. |
JeSoul:I think God's will is still definitely his purpose. Rom 9:19(KJV) (19) Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? Rom 9:19(BBE) (19) But you will say to me, Why does he still make us responsible? who is able to go against his purpose? Makes sense to me. But one thing I think: I Know God has an ultimate and super purpose; but I also feel that he has other wills within his ultimate will. Just like sub-wills of a super-will. these sub-wills might not make sense but all work towards accomplishing the super will. But one thing for sure; no man or thing or situation can resist his will or prevent it from being; whether sub or super will. |
JeSoul:A verse in the bible makes it clear that God will is always done and nothing can resist it: Rom 9:19 (19) Thou wilt say then unto me, Why doth he yet find fault? For who hath resisted his will? The bold part in the verse surely suggests that nothing or nobody can or has resisted God's will. it denotes an impossibility of resisting God's will. Another translation(CEV) puts it thus: Rom 9:19 (19) Someone may ask, "How can God blame us, if he makes us behave in the way he wants us to?" In the light of the different responses, i'd like us to go through these verses: Rom 9:16-21These do show that everything does stem from God and how he wants things to be; not really God using how we are or what we do to accomplish his purpose. It surely looks like he makes us do what we do to accomplish his purpose. ![]() NB: I am not complaining about what God does or is doing; i'm cool with it. ![]() |
verycute:Have u tried not being emotional about issues and maybe check whether these things Kunle says are true and maybe worth looking into? Forget about his intentions because u can never know them. Work with the information on ground and stop trying to put meaning into nothing. eg. Is it not stupid for a woman to label some people as family destroyers or busybodies just because they mentioned some suspicious stuff or activities which they feel her husband has been involved in? Is it not prudent for her to;although hoping and trusting that they are wrong, check if what they say is true? |

. I'm guessing you're a "predestination" guy right?
We'll talk again when you grow
